That is wrong. You can still blame them if by that they set you back by a number of years. Even when you have the means to go your own way, those years will still be lost and you will never get them back.
I first listened to this speech when I was fresh out of college, seeing the world from a naive lens. Now 10 years later, after I've failed epically in major aspects of life, I come back to this video again. This time, I cried over the fact that I haven't lost my love for the world. I actually love it more than ever.
I had a very deep conversation about this with a roommate in rehab. We continuously tried to out literature each other throughout our stay and she wrote me out a poem she knew by heart that I still keep years later. It will remind me forever of the worth and value of intelligence that is so very declined in the world. Also how having any addiction or physical issue creates an extreme allowance for others to dispose of people. If reincarnation is a truth this has been my life for very many lessons. For I know it is. I know I'm here now not to pay but to learn.

What a speech. Brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes. "Rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life" is such an inspiring statement.

This is one of the most important, honest and beautiful speeches I have ever heard. I try to listen to this speech, several times, each year. Thank you JK Rowlings for this speech and your life. You have taught millions, so much. You are compassionate, empathetic, eloquent, hard working and a brilliant speaker and writer. It's been 13 years since she delivered this address and yet every word holds true even today..sheer brilliance..I am sure people would be looking this up in the distant future too since what she said is timeless and universal.
At over 60 years of age and feeling I have failed to reach my dreams in life, Rowling's speech made me decide to read her children's books for the first time ever, appreciating now the human behind the writing. That she could entertain despite taking to heart the suffering in our world is an amazing testament to the power available to every human.
I hadn’t realised that J K Rowling was so full of real insight. Her life’s story shows that she followed her dreams and did what she was destined to do. She mentioned the need to ‘touch others’ because she knows that so many graduates are likely to pursue money at the expense of doing just that, and will be all the poorer for it. The quote from Seneca is as timeless as the messages she has given us. Thank you.
She says the opposite, she never dreamed her life would be the way it turned out. Also, her favourite characters spoke TO her just as many authors discover, they were created by her Muse.
JK has brought me to tears so often in my life. Twice today I've cried; once listening to speech and twice when Dobby saved Harry and his friends from Malfoy Manor. Thank you Jo
I have admired JK Rowling since her first book came out, not because I read it (I haven't read a single one of her books, or seen any of the Harry Potter movies) but because I learned of how she went to a church for help and they ridiculed her for being on welfare. And as the church people paraded their piousity all around at her expense, they humiliated her to no end and without mercy. I admire her because she was able to pull herself up by the bootstraps and do better than even she expected. And get this. The church people still complained, never being satisfied. Not only did she make something of herself, but she got a whole generation of children all around the world very interested in reading, which I never even thought possible for this day and age. For that, she's a hero to many millions of people, and yes, that includes me. My own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews would read her books with great excitement and anticipation and then come to me and tell me all about it, and then after they saw the movie that was related to the book they read, they would tell me about how much better the movie or book was, and why they feel that way. She got children interested, engaged, and involved. For that, I will be forever grateful to JK Rowling. It's also the biggest reason I admire her so much.
I have watched this replay many times more than 10 years ago. Also recommended to others. Rowling was reading from a transcript but it didn't take away the impact of the speech on the audience. Truly a great writer!
And that is why she earns the big bucks. It is so nice to hear someone give a message of worth, and to do that in a witty, humorous, and humble manner.
Jk Rowling is inspirational in this address not just because of her achievements or eloquence but because you really can see the inherent goodness in her heart, and her humanity. She has had to be pragmatic to survive through life's difficulties but still wholeheartedly believes that good will triumph over evil. It's impossible to hate this woman!
I agree, except for this issue. She believes certain people should not be allowed to identify who they truly are, who they were born as, and that is wrong.
What a great speech, I mean literally every 10 seconds she said something that strikes you (either for being a powerful point, deep or funny). She knows how to write a speech that's for sure, and books too obviously!
There was such kindness is her demeanour and her eyes. I can’t even begin to fathom the harsh realities and the roughness she must have experienced through her years. If I am able to attain even a fourth of her wisdom in my years to come, I would consider myself blessed. Thank you for posting this video on youtube.
J.K.Rowling is smart, really funny and has great knack for grabbing audience attention whilst she speaks. She is not only a great writer but also a good person to impart her experiences and knowledge to the audience.
Lalay Wayn Apart from the references to her books, she did not make any jokes that would not translate into other languages. J.K. Rowling truly has a tremendous depth of knowledge and wisdom, and all told through that most wonderful filter of British Humor. But I suppose anyone who has had the pleasure of reading the Harry Potter books could have distilled that insight. Carry on Jo, you've taught generations of children (and adults) the importance of integrity, humility, being earnest and standing up for what is right.
this is hands down the best commencement speech ever given. There is a reason everyone loves Harry Potter. It is honest and it is beautiful. Our generation is not full of mindless oafs that dwell in cloud cuckoo land. There is hope for us
I am immensely grateful for her existence. Such a source of love, inspiration, compassion, courage and joy. Such a glorious mind and heart. I love her to the moon and back.
Hello Dr how are you doing today?.... Rock bottom became a solid foundation An honest and heartfelt Commencement Speech, one of the best I ever heard....i hope you enjoyed the video?
As expected J.K. Rowling kills it, and does so with class. Any astute reader of her books sees not just the magic, but the shit. In them is the grime of society, as the Deatheaters, the those who cannot be named, the Umbridges, the Politicians, the Twelawney's, the everybody's, that you will meet, great or small, wicked and lying, good and protective, and nurturing, or nay-saying, are in her books. She is a gem, and a tremendous writer, worthy her due, and, as this video proves, a wise human being, well placed to give a humbling commencement to the 1 percenter's among us. I hope they listened.
My favorite part is when Harry feels pity for Voldemort. Really shows how hate comes from fear and weakness, and it is not to be feared but fought and pitied. Voldemort is a sad scared little boy
I'm from Hong Kong and I'm a big fan of Harry potter This speech was illuminating, inspiring, and heartfelt. Undoubtedly one of the best speeches in history.
I have never hear or see any one who talks like This woman ,she has described my life in 4 points : 1-Failure on an epic scale .2-I was the biggest failure i have ever knew .3-My fears & my parents fears about failing in life has manifested into a Reality.4-Any hope of light at the end of Tunnel is just a hope & not a reality...This speech is the Most important speech i have ever listened to in my whole life about any subject ..
A charming and entertaining woman who has my respect. Her integrity in the face of shameless critics and her stance in defence of the uniqueness of girls and women has her standing head and shoulders above many in limelight.
I have no idea how I came across this in 2020, but this speech is so beautiful and inspiring. Precisely what I needed. My daughters and I just started book #4 and we're so excited. What a deeply gifted wordsmith and humble person she is.
I knew she had a thing for Greek mythology! Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. Minerva was also the first name of professor Mcgonagall.
Now, that was one fantastic speech! This was mighty in every way - the composition, the deliver, the humor, the humanity, the gravitas, the writing, and the utter lack of bullshit. That there was one of the best talks I’ve ever heard. (For the records, I’m not a Hogwartian, nore a Rowlingite. I have never ready a word of her writing, although I have seen the films. My admiration of this speech is not due to fan-boyism. It is simply and admiration for a perfect thing).
I am watching all of JK Rowling and Oprah Winfrey's interviews to get motivated in life again. I'm currently going through some inner turmoil at the moment and I dunno what to do with my life. People like JK Rowling inspire me and I do hope that failure part she said will be turned into happiness and success!
I came here last time, in a time of failure, at the true rock bottom of my life. I am here again, because her speech gave me hope, I am now doing so much better because of her statement. “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” Words I have etched into my brain. What a gem!!! Can’t believe I was nearly going to Exeter, her old school.❤
She is indeed an amazing person, J.K. Rowling left me unspoken and speechless for her inspiring words as failure is the key upon attaining success. It made me realize on my way back when I had my failures and it made me go even further and face my failures head on. I am thankful for those failure and hardships which made me who I am now. It is true that without failure there will be no success. Thank you so much J.K. Rowling for this beautiful speech of yours.
This is one of the very best commencement addresses of all time. I envy the class that was able to hear this address in person. JK Rowling once hit rock bottom herself and made it through to the other side by her own efforts, so when she tells you not to give up/life can still get better, you really and truly do believe her.
Finally, a REAL SPEECH at Harvard. We all make mistakes - it has nothing to do with "a dream", or "being lazy", or "stupid" but what you do with the circumstances. How to learn from the mistakes that one's made. Maybe success is not measured but how "hard" you work but a combination of "luck", "opportunity", and MOST IMPORTANTLY learning from one's failures and mistakes, thus eventually overcoming them. :)
What an inspiring, sensitive and enlightening speech. Even if I didn't knew who she is I would respect her for this speech: it shows so much wisdom, empathy, and honesty.
"I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was ... Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena where I believed I truly belonged."
LOVE that JK Rowling discussing the importance of failure. Mistakes are part of the process. We need to learn through trial and error. Then we can build on bright spots.
So sad that this bright, beautiful, and intelligent woman has now been “canceled” by a political ideology. I grew up in a very poor trailer park in rural Alabama. My mom read Harry Potter to all of us when we were kids. I joined the military when I was 18. I’m now 28 with a Master’s degree and I switched from enlisted to officer. I remember my mom showed me this video when I graduated high school. I have successfully climbed out of poverty by my own efforts and I am truly grateful for the fictional books this woman wrote. She comforted my mother, and my brother and sisters when we didn’t have anything to eat but a cup of noodles. Thank you J.K. Rowling. This speech and your books are truly amazing.
She's still doing fine. The only effect of being "cancelled" is that the usual supsects continue to rant about her and spread disinformation. She's still a successful author, still working, still highly popular.

it was definitely a speech that could be only given by someone who legitimately went through a hardship and struggle in life. I feel fortunate enough to hear her speech one late night while enjoying my bedtime which could have just been usual bed time but steered me into full of passion and inspiration instead. Most of all, I'm grateful for all the hopes that shes given me through this wonderful speech. it surely led me to turn back to a firm belief that ive been told so many times that could rather sound corny, but things will turn out all good as we all learn from our failure. Thanks for the great speech.
Very inspiring. Thank you Ms Rowling. I needed that. As a woman. Well said, J.K., as a parent and daughter: "There' is an expiry date for blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction. The moment you take the wheel. The moment you are old enough to take the wheel, the responsibility lies with you."
I'm an arab man, English isn't my native language but your speech touches my heart, and deeply affects me, thank you for your advice, which I believe it changed millions of people's lives .
Just sent this to my mother and father. Maybe this can communicate to them that my pursuit of my passions will not be compromised by poverty or failures along the way.
this is what I need right now, because I feel beaten up by life in so so many way right now. I just can't see the light. So I am going to imagine instead because I really need it.
...believe it or not, this masterpiece right here is what gave me all the motivation I needed to rewrite my Law Entrance Examination and finally aced it...when I was down and needed something to motivate me, one of my favourite writers came through for me...great piece!!!
Totally teared up - incredibly moving speech! I really don't care about (and don't understand and am apathetic to my incomprehension of) any of the JK Rowling controversies. For me, in my life, in my book, she was definitely never cancelled. At all. Such an eloquent, moving, articulate writer and speaker. Thank goodness for Rowling and Harry Potter!
Marc Johnson She is not INFP she is INFJ. She said so in the acknowledgements in one of her books ;) "Rowling makes the disclosure in the acknowledgments of her new crime novel, The Silkworm - her second under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith - thanking her editor and “fellow INFJ”, David Shelley."
I now know not to assess this woman by her written fiction but by her clear self-revelation encapsulated by this speech. Now I know her as a wise woman with empathy, loyalty and love.
All I'm saying is people shouldn't be paid stupid and ridiculous amounts of money for writing a book roald Dahl wasn't worth hundreds of millions why is she her books aren't any better.
"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default." Brilliant.
I revisit this video almost every year to seek a source of inspiration and Joanne never fails to amaze me. The feeling is getting stronger as I grow older. There are so many insights from the life she shared, the bottom line of being an educated person is sympathy, love, and many more. I am blessed for her existence, truly.
Making money is not the same as keeping it, there are a lot of things that aren't well taught in schools. The market crisis gave me my first millions, when people stayed away from hard times I made the most of it..many credits goes to Sir Zach Micah Demers
This is superb information, as a noob it gets quite difficult to handle all of this and staying informed is a major cause, how do you go about this? Do you trade on your own?
Not at all, I invest with Sir Zach Micah Demers. I have been monitoring my portfolio performance which has made a jaw dropping $473k from just the past two quarters alone, I have learned why experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market. I must say it's the boldest decision I've taken since recently.
The adviser I'm in touch with is ‘Zach Micah Demers', His strategy works hence my result. he provides entry and exit point for the securities I focus on.
I've come across a lot of recommendations but this one stands out. Zach Micah Demers’ resume is sophisticated, and shows he was active during the last bear market, I also emailed him. Thanks for the info!

But I suppose anyone who has had the pleasure of reading the Harry Potter books could have distilled that insight. Carry on Jo, you've taught generations of children (and adults) the importance of integrity, humility, being earnest and standing up for what is right.
I find myself crawling back to this video whenever i need a pick-me-up.
God I love her.
🇰🇪🌹❤️
Me too MashaAllah
As do I. Whenever I feel that I am my lowest point, this pushes me forward

Nice
She truly is an incredible person. One of those who leave their marks in everything they attempt. She and her work is a source of enormous inspiration.
this is hands down the best commencement speech ever given. There is a reason everyone loves Harry Potter. It is honest and it is beautiful. Our generation is not full of mindless oafs that dwell in cloud cuckoo land. There is hope for us
Wow. Twilight still had hard core fans, who knew?
***** Well - I think you're a piece of shit
+LIGER ZERO Because you're a vile little troll, I would guess.
+LIGER ZERO You're disgusting.
+LIGER ZERO Well wanting to preserve what you call "racial integrity" is a sin. There is no such thing.
I am immensely grateful for her existence. Such a source of love, inspiration, compassion, courage and joy. Such a glorious mind and heart. I love her to the moon and back.
Hello Dr how are you doing today?.... Rock bottom became a solid foundation
An honest and heartfelt Commencement Speech, one of the best I ever heard....i hope you enjoyed the video?
Profound, articulate, graceful, humorous, and empathetic. What an outstanding commencement speech!
Absolutely! Great comment :)
you missed out the chosen ones ;)
Love your summary
My favorite part is when Harry feels pity for Voldemort. Really shows how hate comes from fear and weakness, and it is not to be feared but fought and pitied. Voldemort is a sad scared little boy
I'm from Hong Kong and I'm a big fan of Harry potter
This speech was illuminating, inspiring, and heartfelt.
I hope life improved for you.
A charming and entertaining woman who has my respect. Her integrity in the face of shameless critics and her stance in defence of the uniqueness of girls and women has her standing head and shoulders above many in limelight.
@hello stephen how are you doing?
I have no idea how I came across this in 2020, but this speech is so beautiful and inspiring. Precisely what I needed. My daughters and I just started book #4 and we're so excited. What a deeply gifted wordsmith and humble person she is.
This is the best speech I've ever heard. I've learned so much and so enlightened. Thank you JK Rowling.
This speech is part of our syllabus in Telangana, India (OU) degree college, for nearly 12-24 marks.
Really impressive speech.
I was looking for this comment! Fringe benefits of failure!
Both articulate and kind, J.K. Rowling is a uniquely delightful human being.
One of the greatest speeches I’ve ever heard before a magnificent affect on the new 👩🎓 graduate students.
She sounds like Dumbledore...
hrishikesh joshi ... Sherlok😂
She said in an interview it was her favorite character in Harry Potter :)
Kaepora Gaebora she also said Hagrid was her favourite Harry Potter character
@@hey_its_annabel I think she just really like those 2 characters
hrishikesh joshi well, seeing as she created dumbledore and wrote all his dialogues...
I am watching all of JK Rowling and Oprah Winfrey's interviews to get motivated in life again. I'm currently going through some inner turmoil at the moment and I dunno what to do with my life. People like JK Rowling inspire me and I do hope that failure part she said will be turned into happiness and success!
Oprah is also very inspirational. I love her
Hope you got better :)

Al Quran is where tranquility lies for me in recent days
Gosh she is so eloquent and wise. Her choice of wonderful words with which to clothe her timelessly-majestic ideas is truly inspiring.
She is so beautiful in any dimensions, that speech was increadible
she has warm gentle eyes... they make me calm.
This is one of the very best commencement addresses of all time. I envy the class that was able to hear this address in person. JK Rowling once hit rock bottom herself and made it through to the other side by her own efforts, so when she tells you not to give up/life can still get better, you really and truly do believe her.
SHE is still not afraid to speak for what is right. I stand with Jo Rowling
Delivered with class, wisdom and intelligence. Inspirational.
Even if I didn't knew who she is I would respect her for this speech: it shows so much wisdom, empathy, and honesty.
still makes so much sense today even 8 years have passed....
One of the most inspirational speech ever ,no wonder she has a magical power with words
"I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was ... Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena where I believed I truly belonged."
That was a beautiful speech.
i already watched it many times but the inspiration never fades.
"As is a tale so is life. Not how long it is but how good it is, is what matters"
What a remarkable speech: it's a deep dive into the need for empathy, imagination, and action, ending in truly well expressed good luck.
Hello KIMBERLY how are you doing today?.....Rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life".
An honest and heartfelt Commencement Speech, one of the best I ever heard.....hope you enjoyed washing this video?
it was definitely a speech that could be only given by someone who legitimately went through a hardship and struggle in life.
Wow. A powerful speech; her willingness to share her past and her failures in front of a crowd as large as that is truly something else.
"And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life."
Even in speech, she wields words with sensational prowess.
❤️❤️
I hope everything is fine now :)
So, how are you now, 4 years later?
...believe it or not, this masterpiece right here is what gave me all the motivation I needed to rewrite my Law Entrance Examination and finally aced it...when I was down and needed something to motivate me, one of my favourite writers came through for me...great piece!!!
"People who have been kind enough not to sue me when I took their names for death-eaters " 😂😂
Here in 2020 and this message has never been more relevant for Americans.
"what we achieve inwardly will change outer reality." so true.
3:25! Someone used quixotic in a sentence!! I have long awaited this day
Marc Johnson
She is not INFP she is INFJ. She said so in the acknowledgements in one of her books ;) "Rowling makes the disclosure in the acknowledgments of her new crime novel, The Silkworm - her second under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith - thanking her editor and “fellow INFJ”, David Shelley."
How are you today am James Nelly from South America since i lost my mommy things have been hard for me i just need your help please +233238534416
I've heard someone else use it, but they sounded like an arse.
Oh
Watch 'The Newsroom', I feel you will enjoy it.
I now know not to assess this woman by her written fiction but by her clear self-revelation encapsulated by this speech.
Now I know her as a wise woman with empathy, loyalty and love.
J.K Rowling has a special place in my heart
She Is Intelligent
she did in mine too, she truly did 😔🖤
So your saying her story books/movies harry potter is worth a billion dollars she's way over paid it's obscene.
@@acostin4004 she brought happiness to hundreds of millions of people. your jealousy is unbecoming.
All I'm saying is people shouldn't be paid stupid and ridiculous amounts of money for writing a book roald Dahl wasn't worth hundreds of millions why is she her books aren't any better.
One of the best speeches written of all time.
"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default."
Brilliant.
my right ear is very lonely
so is mine.
+Mingkengbomnam Gao ikr
Which is doubly ironic considering there is two microphones on the podium.
ahahahahaha that was a brilliant remark
And I thought it was my headphone, thank God.
Back here again and I have to say... She's the role model for all of us. What a moving speech.
Yes
I love her ❤️❤️❤️
Indeed Indeed Indeed 🥰🥰🥰
What an inspiring speech, wish I saw this years ago, but these messages are so true no matter what stage of life we are in
This didn't stop me from becoming a gay wizard
***** what exactly is the gay wizard joke a reference to, if it is a reference?
the head master dumbledore wizard was gay
Dumbledore is that you?
Good use of your wand :P
MagicEve heyo
I have a feeling those people will remember far more than her gay wizard joke.
+5pecialist Dumbledore xD
Dove Taylor it wasnt a joke.

Yeppp but I also have a feeling MOST of the people aren’t gay people
9:26 "Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life." never heard that said so eloquently
I’ve actually been looking into advisors lately, the news I’ve been seeing in the market hasn’t been so encouraging. who’s the person guiding you?
The adviser I'm in touch with is ‘Zach Micah Demers', His strategy works hence my result. he provides entry and exit point for the securities I focus on.
I've come across a lot of recommendations but this one stands out. Zach Micah Demers’ resume is sophisticated, and shows he was active during the last bear market, I also emailed
him. Thanks for the info!
A woman of this talent of moving peoples' heart should have been a Prime minister, her speech has the charisma to move hearts.................
Sharp words from a very intelligent woman.
inspiring, motivational, touching, simply beautiful
She is exceptional. What a wonderful human being to use her platform to express such a wonderful message.
This speech is applicable to my life 11 years since she delivered it. It continues to keep me going (as do the Harry Potter books). 💛
Me too I frequently listen to it
