Julie, you are right this was easy enough to make. I made them the night before I had to have my knee surgery. All I did was fry them up the morning before leaving. I packed them for my husband with a thermos of hot tea so he could have a an easy breakfast while he waited for me to come out of my five-hour surgery. Thank you!
I am doing well thank you for your concern. I was not able anything sweet or savory for 24 hours after the surgery, but my husband sure appreciated them.
Am very curious how a hotteok tastes like so I finally made some yesterday using your recipe (substituted roasted sesame seeds for the walnuts). Daebak! It was delish! My family loved it! Each one ate two hotteoks in one sitting. 😁👌🏽
I've never seen it made this way, it looks good though! I only use all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, salt and I let it rise for an hour. I then add brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling. Poor mans version. haha.
Some of you asked for a sweet treat this season so here you go! Can't think of something better to make than Hodduk, or brown sugar filled Korean pancakes!
That's so great...and interesting too because my friend JUST texted me some pics telling me she made this recipe as well, but nut-free for her son. I guess it's the right time for it!
I viewed at least 10 youtube vdos on how to make this before I clicked yours. Even the vdo that had 1.9mill views does not parallel yours in terms of tips (eg glutinous rice flour for chewy texture, make sure nuts are chopped fine, oil yr fist before punching dough). Greatly appreciated this vdo! Clicked subscribed!
Hi Gayle, that is so awesome that you found us on the 11th youtube video haha! I'm so glad you did and you appreciated all those little extra tips. I always try to include those helpful nuggets in all our videos. Sometimes it's those little tips that help the most. Hope you gave it a try because you will not be disappointed!
@@ChefJulieYoon Chef Julie: would this work with store bought ready made red bean paste filling? The paste is more solid in texture than the canned japanese version. Paste is used in chinese mooncakes.
@@ChefJulieYoon I forgot to add, for the benefit of other readers... 1.5 cups of milk was too much liquid for the dough. It did not have any structure at all and I could not shape or fold it close. Slightly more than 1 cup worked just right. Could be because of my room temp (hot@29C) or my APF (not as strong). I love this recipe!
Everyone please use this!! Over the years, I have used 3 or 4 other recipes (the basic kind, no glutinous rice flour) and this is BY FAR the best I ever had!!! Tastes like 70% bread, 30% mochi--but indistinctively. The rice flour not only makes it insanely light tasting, and quite stretchy. I always add chopped apples into mine, and it usually rips the dough however the stretchiness makes it much more forgiving than all the other recipes. (Or maybe dont use this recipe. Due to the lightness and addictive taste, ya bitch ate 3 in one sitting. I usually stop after one)
You are a great cook Julie your recipes are simple easy and tasty .these pancakes looks delicious i will definitely try them .can i use ordinary rice flour.
Thank you for saying that! I'm actually not sure about the answer for your question. I haven't tried it with anything but sweet rice flour. So I don't know if the texture or taste would be exactly the same. The sweet rice flour is what gives it a soft yet chewy texture that crisps up when fried.
Thanks Chef for sharing this, everytime i watch Korean vlog, this sweet pancake really makes me wanna try to do it, by the way, any recommendation for the oil? any oil will do? Oh i must i love your idea of having chocolate or peanut butter filling yummy!
love your channel!! so glad that i found your vlog!!! enjoying so much watching your cooking show and you&your husband tasting the final dish together!! so excited to watch all your vlogs!!! heehee
Mmm I love these but I've never had a fresh made one, we would always buy the frozen ones when I was a kid and I would toast them in the toaster. I can't wait to try this recipe 😋
+Vanessa Paik Hahah... our videos should come with a warning label... don't watch when you're hungry or it's late at night. Thanks for your constant support my friend!
#yessssss thanks😀😀😀 I've been wishing for a sweet treat this season..I'm so trying this on Sunday👍👍 each week my boyfriend, my brother & myself pick a new recipe to try😀😀 this is going to be mine...they've become new subbies after I made the soup with dumplings I showed them your channel cause they loved the recipe💙💙 Keep up the awesome job😀😀😉😉👍👍👏👏
+Sunny Sanchez Yes I remember you requesting a sweet treat. Hope you tried the recipe and enjoyed it! :) Thanks for choosing to do one of mine for your Sunday cooking session, and appreciate you spreading the word of our channel! :)
There aren't many things better than a fresh Hodduk! I can't wait to try this at home. The different fillings sound interesting too. I wish I could just eat it without actually making it at this point.. haha :D
+Yeae Gi Park Haha yeah I'm sure you have enough sweets in your life. That's why I make a big batch all at once and freeze them! I just ate a leftover frozen Hodduk today! :)
I'm allergic to most of nuts and I'm looking for a filling alternative. It's similar to traditional Polish racuchy but we make it with grated apples. Do you think it would work with roasted apples inside? Polish-Korean hodduk
Any recommendations if you do not have an Asian grocery store near you? I'm trying to find Korean food products on Amazon or online that are able to ship without paying an arm and a leg. I'm specifically looking to try ddeokbokki. How about a video on how to make your own?? Thank you! Love your videos and enjoyed the vlogs!
+Jordan Hmm... not sure if you don't have any Asian grocery stores near you and you don't want to go through Amazon :(. Anyone out there wanna help Jordan out with this?
Is it fine to just use rice flour instead of sweet rice flour? And can i put it in the freezer (when its still raw) after i shaped it? Thank you so much for your video! :)
You know... I can't verify an answer to either of your questions because I haven't tried it. Maybe you can check online to see if the rice flour gives you the same consistency as sweet rice flour... I think it should, but I'm not sure. Also, in theory it seems like you can freeze the dough after you fill and shape it, but I don't want to lead you astray since again I've never tried it. They do sell kits that are "raw" and frozen into shape that you just fry up at home, so I'm assuming you can.
I don't have any vegan Korean recipes right now and I only planned to do one season of our show dedicated to Korean recipes, so not sure if I'll be doing more. But maybe you can find substitutions online for some of the recipes I have posted up already!
I love your channel. You instructions are so clear and easy to follow. BTW, can you share with us the lapel microphone that you are using? It has a really good surround sound.
Thanks so much! Glad you think my instructions are clear and easy to follow... I try! Here's the resource for our filming tools on our website. Hope this helps! chefjulieyoon.com/resources/filming-tools/

jumping in here... it is the same as glutinous rice flour. i just made this. really fun to handle the dough.

amazing I really want to make hodduk. actually today I atr hodduk haha.
The hodduk I ate is in my channel:)
Could you use bread flour instead of all purpose?
I probably wouldn't because bread flour might give you a crustier or denser consistency. If you try it and it comes out well, let me know!
Can I use active dry yeast instead? If yes then how much should I use?
