What a horrible, intrusive interview! What a way to bring a woman down. I really felt for Julie, she said how awful it would feel to not sing again but she it was strung out for effect. When Julie said "thank god I'm not younger", that could have been a great segway to shift the focus onto Julie's accomplishments, her acting, the lovely films she's starred in etc.
I agree...I mean it got to a point where Julie problem just didn't know how to respond anymore. Because Barbara was asking so many of the same questions. And you could tell Julie didn't want to talk about it anymore.
Barbara may be extremely intrusive and abrupt, however she gets all the information people want to know. and Julie was very candid here, in no other interview does she discuss the matter more comprehensively.
This was 6 minutes out of a much longer interview. At the time, the loss of her voice was the story. They agree beforehand on what to talk about. Walters did her job here and did it well.

No.. Barbara did exactly what was planned. A lot of times, the celebrity wants to get the story straight, and Barbara will ask the questions to give them the opportunity to answer how they want. She nudges because she’s a good journalist.
Barbara Walters certainly has, in her career, come across as pompously believing she has, as well as getting well paid to have no boundaries. Julie Andrews is in a league no one can compare with. Even with all things human, Julie continues to be an absolutely priceless and beautiful gift, from above, to us.
Oh gosh. Julie Andrews has been a part of my childhood ever since I watched Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music. The pain in her voice about the disastrous surgery that destroyed her vocal chords also destroyed something inside her. Watching the last scene of this video....I instantly cried, sensing for a moment how painful loosing her most gifted talent by a surgeon who assured her that her voice will still be the same and not the other way around. :'(
that interviewer couldn't just get over with the deppresing questions - srsly from a person who had to stop dancing for spine issues, don't ever ever put salt on the wound that way. gosh, it's painful to watch how respectful Julie answered those questions
BUt that's why she's such a gem... she's proven that it wasn't her whole life. She's gone on to act in more and more movies, write and illustrate her children's books, write other books and ones with her daughter. She's gone on with such grace and dignity :)
She must have known or at least I hope she knew that she would one day lose her voice anyway from old age. She is 85. I hope she realizes that she’s more than a voice.

Ooh Julie... :( ...Aww this is actually so heartbreaking. Such a beautifully talented woman, with one of the most iconic voices in history...has to endure such a tragedy. Lord be with her, she's in my prayers.
She's so gracious. I her husband's statement is absolutely true: "If you heard her sing, you would weep... It's an absolute tragedy." That's exactly how I feel. A special gift was stolen from all of us when Julie's vocal cords were altered. This was so devasting for me. I have always aspired to sound like Julie Andrews. Her voice was a gift from God. When God lets terrible things like this happen, I have to pause and reconsider my faith. Julie is so gracious to honestly answer the hard interview questions with such poise. I can still aspire to be as gracious as her.
Barbara kept pushing her and pushing her, as though she wanted to break Julie's calm, noble reserve and make her become emotional. Julie's sadness was palpable, but she remained dignified throughout. Barbara Walters is such an asshole. Julie Andrews on the whole is a very lucky person. She had a wonderful singing career for 50 years, and that's more than most people ever get. And she can still act on TV and in movies. It's very sad that she lost her voice, but she's had and has a great life.
Great job for Julie to keep her ground when Barbara was trying to break her down to tears. All I can say, is I had tears at the end. The song they had from "The Sound of Music" in the background at the end of the interview just made me cry, because they were talking about how she may never sing again, and the lyrics were "And I will sing once more." What a remarkable and classy lady!

It has been almost fourteen years, and yet I tear up when I hear Julie talk about her desire to sing again. She is a true lady, classy and will always be first in my love of actors.

She must have been totally heartbroken when she lost her singing voice several decades ago. It was also a huge loss for all of us millions of people across the world who love her.
It is but today she is still using her talents after 73 years of professional work even if her glorious voice is gone. Dame Julie Andrews will always remain legendary.
I'm not going to deny it, I was devastated back in the late 90s when J.A. was forced to retire from singing, but even if she'd never had that botched operation, she still might not be able to sing like she used to since she's in her 80s. Besides, since retiring from singing, Julie has enjoyed a fantastically successful career collaborating on children's books with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton.
I am crying Jenna....tragic. Such a wholesome voice ruined by incompetence. What a shame. I feel so badly for her. After a lifetime of entertaining she does not deserve this. Julie Andrews has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old and she was starring on Broadway in "My Fair Lady." She was just 20 years of age when she began that fabulous run and I will never forget the night my mother came home from that show and blurted out her glowing review of, not just the show, but of Julie Andrews! She fairly glowed every time she spoke of it and as soon as the first cast recording was out we had it in the house and it was played over and over again. I had never heard her issue such accolades, and have never since, known my mother to be so entirely complimentary of anyone! The entire cast seemed perfectly chosen and suited to their roles. I knew every word of every song and soliloquy within weeks and have never forgotten them. When I moved from home, I had to get my own copy of the album and, since other recordings had been made, was on the hunt for the original. After a long search, I was finally able to get a copy. It was the best of the best and almost 60 years later, I still play it. I have been in love with, and in awe of, Julie Andrews since the moment I first heard her sing and the rest, as they say, is history. To me, all her roles, including those that were strictly dramatic, have been like gems in a golden crown. It is however, inconceivable, that she would not be able to sing again. It is, quite simply, too devastating to think of...ludicrous, appalling and heartbreaking. I am aware that, since this interview was aired, she is singing and performing limited engagements once again and thank God for small favors! We don't have her full voice to listen to and probably never will, but we have her singing to & for us again...and for me, that's all that matters! God bless you Dame Julie and for all the joys you have given us for so many years...I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I know how she feels. I had sang opera and had a neck injury requiring surgery. although they told me I would never sing again. I had to choose walk or sing. walking won out.

Unbelievably heartbreaking... I am always in tears by the end of the video, literally crying. I'm a singer too, so it makes it really difficult, because I know exactly what she was losing. There can't be any other way to describe the experience except heart-wrenching, devestating, and life-altering. I cannot imagine a world without my singing voice without nearly bursting into tears. And then this wonderfully classy and mature lady deals with a (excuse my French) shitheaded, intrusive, prying, gossip-hungry, inconsiderate, unfeeling woman who cares more about having an interesting interview than about Julie's emotions and feelings. My heart practically broke in two when she said "I think it will change something inside of me forever..." and then the Sound of Music track cuts in with "and I'll sing once more". She's right. It would change something inside of a person for as long as they live. What a strong lady. I respect her for many things, many many things, but the one thing I respect her for the most is the unbelievable way she handled this situation. Many people have gone through struggles in their lives, but none have handled it with the amount of grace, poise, maturity, and strength as this wonderful women. We love you, Julie!!
I watched Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music all throughout my childhood but only now at the age of 18 - at that strange time when you are beginning to wonder how to act like a convincing adult (!) - am I starting to see and pick up on the wonderful qualities which Julie Andrews possesses. So charming and warm - a true role model.

I wrote Julie Andrews a letter...4-5 years ago..I had written of my operation on my left chord...in Madrid.. in 1969 (26 yrs. old)...after having studied in Milano for 2 years. Before I returned to Madrid in ('69) had been offered a contract at La Scala..from Ghiringhelli...I was a dramatic coloratura. I, too, was promised by the surgeon that my voice would be perfect after...I couldn't speak for 3 months, had to write everything down...had to go to therapy for a year... at the "deaf and mute school" in Madrid, to learn how to talk.... It took me 10 years to get my voice back...I found a way to phonate correctly and heal the scar tissue. I began to work on the Bel Canto repertoire. I had had a 3+ octave range as a young girl..very big voice...and the best of this journey...was...that I recuperated my voice completely...from E3 to F#6. I have sung (back to back) performances of Norma, Traviata, Donna Anna, Juliet, Santuzza, Pirata, Ballo in Maschera...and many more. I am 78 and am vocalizing up to Bb 5...I write this as I KNOW I COULD HAVE GOTTEN JULIE'S VOICE BACK..her voice sounds just like I did..raspy and husky..until I was able to find my way to work the cords properly...without any strain. I have rehabilitated many singers and speakers, teachers etc...to enjoy their passion. I would have loved to work on her voice.
I will absolutely be going to Julie Andrews one of my first thing sin Heaven to hear that restoration of such an incredible voice. What a heart breaking thing to go through. Just hurts my heart. I am so glad she hasn't committed suicide or something in trying to cope. She gave us some of the best vocals for so many many years. Can't wait to hear that voice in Heaven!

So sad. I had wondered what happened to her voice. It must rip her heart out to not be able to sing at all. I have lost much of my own voice through illness, but at least I can still sing some for my own pure enjoyment and I never had a world renowned voice or career to begin with. I've enjoyed her voice my whole life and it's fortunate that we have so much of her voice recorded to enjoy now, I admire her very much as a person for being able to talk about this with Barbara Walters and go public with such a painful subject for her. I have been very happy to see her in film since this interview and look forward to as many future projects with her in them as possible as well. She is beloved for more than just her voice and is always a treat to watch as an actress even if she never is able to really sing again. I was already so sad watching Julie talk about losing her voice from that botched throat operation, but when that last scene came on, I could only sob for her tremendous personal loss and for her many fans’ and my loss of never hearing her sing again with her gift voice. As “Mary Poppins Returns” recently came out, Julie was asked to cameo in this sequel, but she graciously declined saying “the film should be Emily’s show”. If Julie appeared, she didn’t want viewers to think “There’s the real Mary Poppins”. She wanted Emily to interpret Mary Poppins her own way. Dame Julie Andrews - lady of great class! It was great seeing Julie’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke reprise his role as Mr. Dawes (Jr.), singing & dancing at age 93!

she is a part of my history as a child. My father had studio quality components and voice of the theather speakers in our home...Her records were part of the family.
It is very unfortunate about what happened to her. But in a way that can be bright. This weird, abstracted, universe gave her a new challenge in life. And has hopefully made her stronger.

BUt that's why she's such a gem... she's proven that it wasn't her whole life. She's gone on to act in more and more movies, write and illustrate her children's books, write other books and ones with her daughter. She's gone on with such grace and dignity :)
If there's something she can do, it is writing books. And, I'm sure she thinks of her favorite things.
She must have known or at least I hope she knew that she would one day lose her voice anyway from old age. She is 85. I hope she realizes that she’s more than a voice.

She's so gracious. I her husband's statement is absolutely true: "If you heard her sing, you would weep... It's an absolute tragedy." That's exactly how I feel. A special gift was stolen from all of us when Julie's vocal cords were altered. This was so devasting for me. I have always aspired to sound like Julie Andrews. Her voice was a gift from God. When God lets terrible things like this happen, I have to pause and reconsider my faith. Julie is so gracious to honestly answer the hard interview questions with such poise. I can still aspire to be as gracious as her.
Barbara kept pushing her and pushing her, as though she wanted to break Julie's calm, noble reserve and make her become emotional. Julie's sadness was palpable, but she remained dignified throughout. Barbara Walters is such an asshole.
Julie Andrews on the whole is a very lucky person. She had a wonderful singing career for 50 years, and that's more than most people ever get. And she can still act on TV and in movies. It's very sad that she lost her voice, but she's had and has a great life.
It's so hard to see her in so much pain. I can't imagine what she is going through.
Great job for Julie to keep her ground when Barbara was trying to break her down to tears. All I can say, is I had tears at the end. The song they had from "The Sound of Music" in the background at the end of the interview just made me cry, because they were talking about how she may never sing again, and the lyrics were "And I will sing once more." What a remarkable and classy lady!

It has been almost fourteen years, and yet I tear up when I hear Julie talk about her desire to sing again. She is a true lady, classy and will always be first in my love of actors.

Of course, many people are curious about how this or that celebrity felt when something happens in their life. I think a really good journalist can have the celebrities open up a bit about their personal lives without being blatantly intrusive and rude about it.

I always hated this interviewer....she always pushes people by asking dumb and always slightly offensive questions (or at least she says them in an insensitive way) until they're either uncomfortable or (as in julie andrew's case, at least from what it looks like) about to cry

And people wonder why I love Princess Diaries 2 so much. It was the first movie she sang in after the surgery, and she sounded just as beautiful. She is such a gorgeous and wonderful person. She is the picture of classy.
Julie Andrews sang for King George VI when she was only 12 years old. She’s been singing for most of her life. That’s how she has made a living throughout her life. She must have been totally heartbroken when she lost her singing voice several decades ago. It was also a huge loss for all of us millions of people across the world who love her.
It is but today she is still using her talents after 73 years of professional work even if her glorious voice is gone. Dame Julie Andrews will always remain legendary.
I'm not going to deny it, I was devastated back in the late 90s when J.A. was forced to retire from singing, but even if she'd never had that botched operation, she still might not be able to sing like she used to since she's in her 80s. Besides, since retiring from singing, Julie has enjoyed a fantastically successful career collaborating on children's books with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton.

My heart stopped and i teared up.. But it wasn't until she took a breath, after stating it would change something deep inside her, smiled and collected herself that i cried... Julie Andrews has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old and she was starring on Broadway in "My Fair Lady." She was just 20 years of age when she began that fabulous run and I will never forget the night my mother came home from that show and blurted out her glowing review of, not just the show, but of Julie Andrews! She fairly glowed every time she spoke of it and as soon as the first cast recording was out we had it in the house and it was played over and over again. I had never heard her issue such accolades, and have never since, known my mother to be so entirely complimentary of anyone! The entire cast seemed perfectly chosen and suited to their roles. I knew every word of every song and soliloquy within weeks and have never forgotten them. When I moved from home, I had to get my own copy of the album and, since other recordings had been made, was on the hunt for the original. After a long search, I was finally able to get a copy. It was the best of the best and almost 60 years later, I still play it. I have been in love with, and in awe of, Julie Andrews since the moment I first heard her sing and the rest, as they say, is history. To me, all her roles, including those that were strictly dramatic, have been like gems in a golden crown. It is however, inconceivable, that she would not be able to sing again. It is, quite simply, too devastating to think of...ludicrous, appalling and heartbreaking. I am aware that, since this interview was aired, she is singing and performing limited engagements once again and thank God for small favors! We don't have her full voice to listen to and probably never will, but we have her singing to & for us again...and for me, that's all that matters! God bless you Dame Julie and for all the joys you have given us for so many years...I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
That really saddens me. What a terrible thing to take something so joyful away from someone. I grew up singing with Julie Andrews in my living room as I watched her on tv. I can remember pretending she was there singing with me. Thank you Julie for the greatest memories
I only shed a single tear this entire thing but then seeing the way she was hurt when she was asked what she would do if she never could sing again I was about to lose it then “and I’ll sing once more” played and I sobbed. Julie Andrews was and is a very big part of my life and I still cry every time I watch her sing in the Princess Diaries

I know how she feels. I had sang opera and had a neck injury requiring surgery. although they told me I would never sing again. I had to choose walk or sing. walking won out.

Unbelievably heartbreaking... I am always in tears by the end of the video, literally crying. I'm a singer too, so it makes it really difficult, because I know exactly what she was losing. There can't be any other way to describe the experience except heart-wrenching, devestating, and life-altering. I cannot imagine a world without my singing voice without nearly bursting into tears. And then this wonderfully classy and mature lady deals with a (excuse my French) shitheaded, intrusive, prying, gossip-hungry, inconsiderate, unfeeling woman who cares more about having an interesting interview than about Julie's emotions and feelings. My heart practically broke in two when she said "I think it will change something inside of me forever..." and then the Sound of Music track cuts in with "and I'll sing once more". She's right. It would change something inside of a person for as long as they live. What a strong lady. I respect her for many things, many many things, but the one thing I respect her for the most is the unbelievable way she handled this situation. Many people have gone through struggles in their lives, but none have handled it with the amount of grace, poise, maturity, and strength as this wonderful women. We love you, Julie!!

I watched Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music all throughout my childhood but only now at the age of 18 - at that strange time when you are beginning to wonder how to act like a convincing adult (!) - am I starting to see and pick up on the wonderful qualities which Julie Andrews possesses. So charming and warm - a true role model.
Julie Andrews adopted children. I wish I had been adopted by Julie Andrews. I would have been such a happy child and I know I would have always had peace inside.

I agree. When I heard about she lost her singing voice, I got really sad for her. Her voice was unique as she as a person so far I know. She didn't deserve this. But she is still appreciate for anyone who grew up with her movies and songs.

I wrote Julie Andrews a letter...4-5 years ago..I had written of my operation on my left chord...in Madrid.. in 1969 (26 yrs. old)...after having studied in Milano for 2 years. Before I returned to Madrid in ('69) had been offered a contract at La Scala..from Ghiringhelli...I was a dramatic coloratura. I, too, was promised by the surgeon that my voice would be perfect after...I couldn't speak for 3 months, had to write everything down...had to go to therapy for a year... at the "deaf and mute school" in Madrid, to learn how to talk.... It took me 10 years to get my voice back...I found a way to phonate correctly and heal the scar tissue. I began to work on the Bel Canto repertoire. I had had a 3+ octave range as a young girl..very big voice...and the best of this journey...was...that I recuperated my voice completely...from E3 to F#6. I have sung (back to back) performances of Norma, Traviata, Donna Anna, Juliet, Santuzza, Pirata, Ballo in Maschera...and many more. I am 78 and am vocalizing up to Bb 5...I write this as I KNOW I COULD HAVE GOTTEN JULIE'S VOICE BACK..her voice sounds just like I did..raspy and husky..until I was able to find my way to work the cords properly...without any strain. I have rehabilitated many singers and speakers, teachers etc...to enjoy their passion. I would have loved to work on her voice.
I will absolutely be going to Julie Andrews one of my first thing sin Heaven to hear that restoration of such an incredible voice. What a heart breaking thing to go through. Just hurts my heart. I am so glad she hasn't committed suicide or something in trying to cope. She gave us some of the best vocals for so many many years. Can't wait to hear that voice in Heaven!
Can anyone imagine what a painful experience it must be for an accomplished singer with a world renowned voice, after surgery to lose so much of the beauty and power of her voice, to only be able to sing several lower notes and then verbally speak the lyrics to the higher notes that she once was able to perform with ease?? It must be devastating .. I could not watch these performances without tears in my eyes ! Since this interview (2010 shows) Her voice is back a bit but nowhere what it used to be..

So sad. I had wondered what happened to her voice. It must rip her heart out to not be able to sing at all. I have lost much of my own voice through illness, but at least I can still sing some for my own pure enjoyment and I never had a world renowned voice or career to begin with. I've enjoyed her voice my whole life and it's fortunate that we have so much of her voice recorded to enjoy now,
I admire her very much as a person for being able to talk about this with Barbara Walters and go public with such a painful subject for her. I have been very happy to see her in film since this interview and look forward to as many future projects with her in them as possible as well. She is beloved for more than just her voice and is always a treat to watch as an actress even if she never is able to really sing again. Injuries, age, and changes happen to us all in life,,,it has been great to see her change and adapt rather than disappear from us forever.

I was already so sad watching Julie talk about losing her voice from that botched throat operation, but when that last scene came on, I could only sob for her tremendous personal loss and for her many fans’ and my loss of never hearing her sing again with her gift voice. As “Mary Poppins Returns” recently came out, Julie was asked to cameo in this sequel, but she graciously declined saying “the film should be Emily’s show”. If Julie appeared, she didn’t want viewers to think “There’s the real Mary Poppins”. She wanted Emily to interpret Mary Poppins her own way. Dame Julie Andrews - lady of great class! It was great seeing Julie’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke reprise his role as Mr. Dawes (Jr.), singing & dancing at age 93!

She still till this day has a beautiful voice, but watching this was heartbreaking when Barbara Walter keeps banging on 'You can't sing' 'You can't sing high notes....' THAT does alot to ones self esteem and confidence! Yes her voice is the subject of this interview but there was no need for that! she is a part of my history as a child. My father had studio quality components and voice of the theather speakers in our home...Her records were part of the family.
After my thyroidectomy I too have lost my voice. It is very difficult to deal with. I only hope for a miracle like Julie’s. Classy lady.
It is very unfortunate about what happened to her. But in a way that can be bright. This weird, abstracted, universe gave her a new challenge in life. And has hopefully made her stronger.
