Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery - Stump Hill TJ

  • Way back in January 2019, a TJ ventured a bit too far and framed out in about 4 feet of snow. A team was assembled and the operation was ultimately called off due to the distance needed to travel, the depth of the snow, and the extreme cold setting in for that weekend (zero degree temps).
Fast forward to March, we tried again and snowshoe'd in ( • Colorado 4x4 Rescue an... ) but spring snowfall had kept the snow so deep and multi-layered that there was no way to get anything more than a snowmobile in (or go in on foot). So there was no way to get this thing turned around and out.
Well we had such a wacky spring here that it was cold clear up through the 1st day of summer. Spring runoff FINALLY wrapped up a few days ago and the USFS gave their blessing to travel beyond the locked gate all the way up to the TJ and get it out.
I was fully expecting rodents to have ate the wiring of the TJ, and we'd be dead towing it out. But alas, after a quick inspection, the owner decided to try to start it up. We had everything with us to work on the vehicle. New battery, heet, fresh gas, tools to pull plugs etc...but the ol TJ fired right up!!
If this isn't an Optima commercial I don't know what is. That battery held charge through -20 temps, sat for 7 months, and still provided about 10 volts and enough amps to start that engine!
we traveled down to the bottom and up to our staging area, and discovered a nicked brake line, so we proceeded to help get it loaded on a trailer and rolling down the mountain.
Since this wasn't an epic winch fest recovery, I video'd the entire drive up the road since we were behind the winter gate, and traveling on an admin route not open to the public.
DO NOT DRIVE PAST THE 1ST TURNAROUND. MAJOR FINES WILL BE ISSUED BY USFS.
If you want to skip the drive up and go right to being on-scene, jump to 30 minutes into the video. The drive up we were just chit chatting about wheeling, life, colorado, etc.
ENJOY! See you on the next one!

Yea my jeep sat for long periods and started with the infamous knock on cold startup....but 7 months in that cold? I would have guessed 70/20 it would have started. Love my 4.0!

My 1987 yj 4.2 sat for 12 years before I got it and all I did was pour fuel in the carb new battery and she has been running for 8 years now trouble free. Great motors , not fast but strong and reliable, simple to work on . Not like this new junk.

josh26050 Most engines will start with no problem after 7 months if it has power to the starter. I’d say it’s more a testament to the battery than the motor in this case.

You will love this story then ! I was working as a mechanic back in the late 80's and a 20 year old girl drove into the shop because she heard a funny noise. it was fall but shop doors open and we all heard it coming in ,we had a open bay and guided her right in. A rod had gone threw the oil pan block and welded to the crank . We told her the motor was junk, she asked to use the phone and called her father who told her we trying to rip her off and she drove away . 0 oil I always wonder how far she made it?

My friends and I were out wheeling in the NEK of Vermont and came across a Toyota buried up to the frame! It was a decent off road build sitting on 40s. We had no idea how it got there or who's it was but we couldn't just leave it there! It was blocking half the trail so after some digging and winch action we had it back on the trail and in our way still so my wife reluctantly agreed to be the driver of that abandoned YOTA whilst I flat towed it 7 miles out of the woods and called everyone I knew to find the owner with no success! So I started searching through the cab and low and behold I found the remnants of a not with the owners number on it. I called the number and got a voicemail 😑 so I left a message with my address and phone number so they could call me back. I felt confident that they would be happy and willing to come get it at my house. Three weeks later I get a call from the number so I answered it and the young lady on the phone said hi I understand you have my YOTA. I said yeah it was kinda blocking the trail she was thankful and asked me where I found it? Confused I explained where it was when I came across it. She then explained to me that her and her husband and some friends were out wheeling and it ran out of gas and they left it off the side of a trail about 20 miles away from where I found it. I was still confused! So I just waited for her to explain. She said that in the hour they were gone for gas someone had stolen it! I apologized and told her that I would do anything I could to help her and she began accusing me off stealing it. Luckily I had recorded the hole trip on my dash cam! Long story short after I hung up on her and the cops arrived at my house I showed them the video and what was left of the note that had her number on it they called her and made her pay me $500 for towing it out! I laughed and said she was an idiot for thinking I stole the damn thing in the first place and called to return it 😂🤣

wow great video, that is the truest definition of a mtn back road, back in the summer of 1980 on holidays in British Columbia i was up in the back country driving my first new vehicle and went up a road a little like this, { not as narrow} and turned a corner and come fave to face with a tandem logging truck, well he said you got to back down and my jaw dropped and the driver just smiled and said yep, i did ever so carefully down hill and around corners almost crappie my pants a few times, then found a spot where it was a little wider and made i guess what was a 7 or 8 point turn a sighed a relief and got the hell out of there and never did that again and at the bottom of the road the driver of the truck stopped and asked me what my car was, i told him it was a brand new Buick Skylark v6 4 speed std and he said he was impressed it made it up that far and had enough ground clearance, i told him it was front wheel drive and he said thats why it made it up the steep roads, all the same i was glad i never drove off any cliffs, what an adventure, your videos are excellent and i enjoy watching them each time, keep up the great work you all do as volunteers, folks are lucky to have y'all available, cheers

Probably the main reason why it wasn't messed with is it was far enough back there that any one who did see it was never back again to realize it's been there that long. First time coming up to it you wouldn't know if the owner was close buy hunting or hiking.

*that Jeep fired right up because of that Optima battery he had in it. those things are THAT bad ass of a battery. that's why all 3 of my Escalades have Optimas in them and when my Cummns Dodge dies i'll replace the batteries in it with Optima's also. so far those have never let me down EVER and i've been running them for over 10 years now. I won't replace a good battery with an Optima, i'll wait till the good one dies first because other wise that would be a waste and i'm all about getting everything i can out of what i have before i replace it but once the replacement time comes without a doubt the replacement will be Optima*

@@jake-mv5oi not true! my 99 tahoe has a red top optima in it that i've had in it for 5 years almost 6 now. still cranks the truck up every time. and it sits for sometimes months without being started. I do now because of it's age have a cheap harbor freight $13.99 solar pannel on it to keep the charge topped up but i just recently put that on and like i said that was mostly only due to the age of the battery it's self. my 2 yellow tops on my personal escalades never need topped off they sit for a month or two without being started as i alternate between them. the Dodge diesel i have however has not been given the Optima treatment yet because it still has two good batteries in it and i'm not willing to part with $600+ to replace two batteries when the truck still has 2 good newly installed non-optimas in it. I'll replace those when the ones it has die and not before but i'll be replacing those with the deep cycle yellow top batteries also.

Jeep 4.0L, the most reliable lump you can have under the hood. LOVED my XJ 4.0... started every time, never let me down and ran like a top.

Did he get an office space type lecture about bridling the tree with the winch line??? ... and boy does that guy have a horse shoe up main street or loads of karma coming... how you only had a single down tree is beyond lucky!!!
i have to rethink how im liven life cuz clearly we dont make our own luck after watching this !!! Thank you guys for volunteering your time and efforts. I get to enjoy the trails we still have open knowing im not having to strain and drain myself and my gear on every fool whom gets lost and stuck!

its amazing how many folks move to the area thinking there outdoor skills are badass ... and end up getting it handed to them ... the commentary about the warnings and advice he received hopefully means he has learned and will return the favor for others that aren’t so fortunate ...havent been on an intermediate or challenge trail in years with out finding some one needing directions broken down or injured ( mostly atv and moto) I often carry extra water because hikers and bikers are not able to carry enough .

Great video! good ol trusty 4.0! Also, maybe next time you take the trailer up, and its a tight turn around, just disconnect the trailer, flip it around in its current spot since its so light, then go up and turn jeep around then come back and hook back up. Would prevent you from getting into a bind in a tight spot with a trailer.

Not too long ago, maybe a month back, I saw a white jeep and a few other vehicles with the 4x4 R&R logo on their way up Caribou Road right near Nederland. The Caribou Mountain 4x4 route wasn't open at the time, and everything else up there is property of the Hendricks Mining Company. Any idea where they ended up?

there have been a bunch of operations lately, some of which are in cooperation with USFS to get vehicles out that sat all winter. i'm not sure of this exact one, but it could be something like that.
