“Bond is not a hero, nor is he depicted as being very likable or admirable. He is a Secret Service Agent. He’s not a bad man, but he is ruthless and self-indulgent. He enjoys the fight- he also enjoys the prizes. In fiction people used to have blood in their veins. Nowadays they have pond water. My books are just out of step. But then so are all the people who read them.”
“I didn’t intend for Bond to be likable. He’s a blunt instrument in the hands of the government. He’s got vices and few perceptible virtues.” - Ian Fleming.
Bond isn’t meant to be a hero. People in that professional world are not heroic.

This exactly. I don’t believe Bind was ever meant to be a father or husband. I did enjoy OHMSS and that storyline was fine, especially with the ending. But in each of the Craig films, he seems to go soft for a woman. That immediately takes his edge away and hence his purpose as an assassin. He needs to be the shadow again. Ruthless.

Maybe not a movie but definitely a tv series (and before you say that “bond is for the big screen” bs, bond since CR in 1953 has appeared in all different art form over the years. Like for instance comic book, comic strip in the daily express, animated series even if it was a big mistake doomed to fail from the start, video games, radio dramas Etc.) since the bond franchise is all about “keeping up with the times and moving forward”. They didn't care at all that the Lord of the Rings fanbase is not onboard with Rings of Power. Because Galadriel is a magical being much more than she is a warrior or general in the books and movies.

Didn't NTTD wrap in 2019? And was suppose to come out 2020? So its been 5 years since it wrapped. And since there's no new script, director, hell, even an actor we're looking at at least 2-3 years minimum before next movie could be done. So it's reaching the longest hiatus for Bond in history.

The original release date was November 2019. That was scrapped when Danny Boyle and John Hodge quit/or fired. NTTD was set for Feb 14th 2020. It was the same release date as Sonic the Hedgehog.
Then NTTD was delayed due to Covid-19.
The film was completed in autumn 2019 so it's five years of zero Bond film making. 2019 to 2024. It's now almost 2025 so the most realistic early release date is 2026 and that's very unlikely. 2027 more likely?
If there is litigation between Amazon and Eon then it's very likely to be a long gap between Bond 25 and 26.

The killing off of Bond in NTTD was a big misstep. I know it is and was purported to be Craig’s idea (and such is the danger of allowing the incumbent actor such free rein and say…).
It’s basically rendered the franchise like Dr Who now, with regenerations.
The character.. almost like the office of POTUS, should remain untouched, respected and unmolested. The incumbent individual.. you can think what you like. The killing off of Bond made Craig larger than the character, as if he ‘deserved’ to be the one to have this occur during his tenure, and no actor should be larger than the character, the canon, and Fleming’s original base material.
As many have said - it would never have happened under Cubby.
Danny Boyle I reckon refused to kill off Bond. Barbara and Craig’s love-in made it so.
He knew what a tailspin that would send the whole franchise into. And he was correct - if Skyfall was a high watermark, NTTD almost feels like a different universe, it doesn’t feel like a Bond film. I think Boyle needs to be given his creative freedom back and a fair crack of the whip again.

Ian Fleming described his agent, 007 James Bond, to be: 185 cm tall (approx. 6'2), dark hair and grey-blue eyes. Connery - check, Lazenby - check, Moore - almost check (but good enough), Dalton - check, Brosnan - check, Craig - NOT SO MUCH. He's a good actor, apart from that weird mouth/face he puts up, but the "americanization" of the British character is just so damaging. PLEASE go back to the roots, make Bond great again!
He must be British, suave, a womanizer, NOT political correct, and he must make fun of the Americans as well as the Russians (ref. the "You only live twice" pre-title sequence): "We don't agree. Her Majesty's government is not convinced that this intruder missile originated from Soviet-Russia. Our tracking station in Singapore reported faint echoes of this craft coming down in the sea of Japan area. Might I suggest gentlemen that this is where you should concentrate your intelligence forces. The Prime Minister has asked me to assure you that this is what we propose to do. It's a matter of fact; our man in Hong Kong is working on it now....."
AND - after he was "working on it", he was "killed".... Was he? No, the mummified Bond was alive when he entered the submarine. I guess he wasn't killed in "No Time To Die" either... I hope we comes alive as a classic, British Bond again.

LOL I was so waiting for this episode!!!! I knew you comment on this WSJ piece!!! Thank you!
As for the article I am sure the WSJ sourced their piece well and their reputation for award winning journalism lends credibility to the article. I don't doubt that their is friction as Amazon is a content creator. They have a streaming network that needs content and what better source to draw from than the Bond franchise.
BB probably chafes at that "content" term for she most likely believes that she is a creator of art/cinema and the word content screams PROLIFERATION AND PROPAGATION...basically milking products for all that it's worth. BB treats her franchise as a creative jewel that should never be over stretched. Sure you have merchandising but Bond has never over saturated the market like other franchises like SW or ST or DC or Marvel. BB treats Bond with care and realizes that Bond should be appreciated in small doses. Something a behemoth content creator like Amazon might not appreciate.
It's a shame really. it's obviously not a death knell for Bond. BB wants the franchise to exist far in the future. But until Amazon and BB can work out their differences the longer it will take for the next Bond to be released. And that would definitely eliminate my favorite choice...Henry Caville. He's not getting younger and he may have already aged out. But a longer delay will definitely not be in his favor.

I think the damage was done when they decided on a through narrative for the Craig era. Casino was a wonderful film about Bond coming into "the life" and it should have been left there and reverted to him just being a fantastical glamorous and exciting avatar to vicariously inhabit for a couple of escapist hours. He is and does everything we'd like to be and do but aren't and can't. We falter in adversity, he doesn't. We moan, he doesn't. We weaken, age and become less important, he doesn't. But we walk out of the film with a bit of a spring in our step because in our imagination we've "lived him" a little while. They've made the same mistake as with every other franchise these days - it's not supposed to be bldy Proust.

    • @grahamgreene779
      @grahamgreene779 Місяць тому

Proust does Bond! Some Bond childhood flashbacks/memories would be interesting to see. But seriously, I have to agree with your overall sentiment about the throughline narrative of the Craig movies, in particular because much of it seemed retconned (is that the right word?) during Spector - laughably so at times - the pictures of past villains as Bond enters M16 at the end of Spector to have his glass partitioned tête-à-tête with brother Blofeld comes to mind.
A man on an individualized mission is formula, no doubt, but it's a formula that worked so well. Hints of Bond's past were always in the movies, albeit in very small doses - XXX reminding Bond of his former wife, Bond visiting Tracy's grave in For Your Eyes Only, recurring characters like General Gogol or Zukovsky. I would have preferred a slight amping up of continuity in characters, small references to past events etc., but still have Bond pick up new assignments that are unconnected by some large overarching conspiracy put into motion by your long-lost step? brother who also happens to be #1 in the largest and/or most formidable criminal syndicate in the world. How about stopping a charismatic heroin (fentanyl?) dealer who moonlights as a Papa Doc like dictator in a 3rd world country? Or some elite hitman turned energy tycoon looking to mothball some recent energy breakthrough for the right price? Could be interesting . . .

Hi David and Community. I was fed up with all of this, literally. But it dawned on me that, in order to create something big, an artist has to meet the Zeitgeist. Every big album, every Song, every movie, has managed to ride the wave and exist within the vibe of its time. If you would bang out the Floodland Album of The Sisters of Mercy, or the Street Fighting Years album of Simple Minds, now, they would have existed collecting dust in the shelves of record stores (which, due to the Zeitgeist, do not exist in that quantity and size anymore). Same for a movie character. I really do not know what I would suggest for a Bond in 2025. But every great Artist senses the necessity of letting time go by without a release. Because otherwise the greatness would just be erased. And this is why these things are so big. Never has it been so difficult to reflect the Zeitgeist for a Bond character than today. As a fan, it really is not pleasurable. But perhaps, necessary to make us wait. Kudos to Barbara. And it took time to realize it. And David, This might be one of your best episodes.

It’d be interesting if Bond had it’s villain spin offs. I made a fun fan fiction “trailer” of what I imagine Max Zorin and May Day’s long lost child would be up to now 40 years after their deaths, from unused outtake footage from a photoshoot with my new camera 😂 I cut my hair during quarantine and Grace Jones was my inspo. Maybe Bond could focus less on 007 and more on the villains like Batman did with The Joker.

I only take that article so seriously,. It is best for Eon to wait until the next MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film comes out and the Superhero genre mess settles (the new SUPERMAN should start fixing that disaster) before they restart Bond for the fourth time after LIVING DAYLIGHTS, GOLDENEYE and CASINO ROYALE. Amazon/MGM/UA should just back them up with the biggest budget they ever had and promote it in every way, shape and form possible. Thank you for yet another excellent, outstanding video!

I don't believe that this is the "death knell" either, David, but...for a long time now, it seems that the producers have been afraid to move on from Craig. Perhaps they became too emotionally attached to him for their own good. He was a great Bond, but he is not the be all end all of the franchise. Picking the new Bond is an extremely important decision, no doubt, but it shouldn't be this hard.
With all that being said, I'm glad that they're not rushing it just for the sake of making a film. None of us want Bond to turn into what Star Wars has become, but perhaps it's inevitable. I guess it doesn't really matter if they make a bunch of pointless Amazon Prime "content" as long as the main film series is good. They best not wait too long, though, or they will completely lose the younger generation.

My issue here is that Amazon has done a really good job in the so-called Dad TV genre, which is where James Bond fits. Amazon has done amazing things with shows like Bosch, Reacher, Jack Ryan, and The Terminal List. My instincts are telling me this disagreement is less about the direction of the franchise and more about money and control.

I sincerely hope they resolve whatever is causing delays in the series, but let’s hope the legendary status of these action films remains untarnished by the kind of “woke” decisions that have arguably hurt franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars.

Amazon is knee deep in DEI, and I wouldn't be suprised if she's politically clashing and becoming controlled by it a tad more than she (Barbara) would like. DEI can be insanely restricting on a creative level. It's evidant in Rings of Power, Die Another Day, Wheel of Time, and several other original shows. As a 50 year old, life long Bond fan, this terrifies me about Bond's future. I feel like, until they figure things out, EON should settle for a M+ rated animated show that could run for a few seasons, and serve as fan service to keep us drooling for the next film.

It is EON who have the upper hand because they have the rights to the franchise, so if Amazon don’t want to play along there'll probably be others to cooperate with. As you says so well “Bond is bigger than everything”. The franchise isn't dead just because a new era takes some time. The gap between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye were also long but the franchise got through it.

  • @Radhatter1
    @Radhatter1 Місяць тому +1

Bond is called to thwart a villain, meets a femme fatale, survives a series of action sequences, and eventually confronts a larger-than-life antagonist. While this formula worked for decades, the rise of unpredictable storytelling, intricate character arcs, and emotionally-driven plots in modern cinema has made Bond’s reliance on traditional tropes seem dated. Films like Skyfall attempted to break this mold, but even those efforts felt more like nostalgia-driven homage than true reinvention.
After over 50 years of Bond films, the audience may simply be growing tired of the same spy drama. The character of Bond, and the stories around him, have remained relatively static over time. Newer generations may find the films formulaic, and the "spy thriller" genre has been expanded upon by other films and shows that add more depth or nuance to espionage and intelligence work.

Unfortunately, "No Time to Die" does not feel like a James Bond movie. To be honest, I started to have this feeling from Spectre onwards. From that point, the producers began to lose control and handed it over to Daniel Craig. I have tried to watch and rewatch this last movie several times to give it more chances, but it remains subpar and does not resemble a James Bond film. Barbara's shock without Craig indicates that these producers no longer have the ability to continue with this franchise. I believe they will sell the rights to another party, hoping that the same fate will not befall them as it did with the Star Wars franchise. A progressive Amazon may struggle to manage the James Bond franchise effectively.

I'm not sure Barbara Broccoli is the heroine in this ongoing saga and difference of opinion, with Amazon films.
She's the one that chose and fortified the entire Daniel Craig arc of films.
Notwithstanding the ton of money that allegedly was made with his tenure as James Bond, I think he did a lot of damage to the idea and persona of James Bond - particularly when he insisted that he be killed off in the last film, followed by the stunningly stupid - 'James Bond Will Return' slogan at the end.
Who knows how this will play out?
The Amazons, Primes and Netflixes of this world cannot be considered good stewards of a very traditional '50s based spy, who's a red-blooded straight male.

I hope Amazon aren't like Microsoft, who buy in to rivals just to shut them down. A live franchise is a money pit, but a dead franchise is a money earner. There are two ways to look at assets, and to a monopoly like Amazon, they dont care about the top line, only the bottom line. EON were idiots to get involved with Amazon in the first place, but I think maybe Barbara wants to hang up her hat for the last time. Anyway, hope you have a Happy Christmas David. Here is your gift, and this is my favourite chapter of my book.
    [Scene 15]
The ocean ripples gently, as mesmerising sun rays shimmer and dance in the water. There is a stillness, a softness. A place where time seems to have stood still for thousands of years. A slight wind and the waves create a soothing lullaby, as they gently stroke the beach. Tiny shrimps explore tidal rock pools, while crabs comb the beech, examining every tiny little artifact. Crystal azure waves foam gently on the sand; the pure white surf made almost invisible by the hot sun. Scented trees arch over an ebbing waterline, hardly caring to sway a leaf or twig. Ants investigate a weather-beaten wooden boat, which lies broken on the sand. A small lizard casually licks up a mouth full of the ants, and then quickly scurries for a shadow. It is the shadow of a man's arm dangling down.
42 days after jumping from the ocean liner, Bond washes up in a strange place; lulling itself to sleep with strange bird calls, water swirls, and random delirious noises. Is this heaven?, he wonders, as he lays there unable to move; - his crusted eyes closed, and his face now broken with salt and sun blisters. Suddenly, the sky grows very dark, as though the sun itself has been blotted out completely by a huge dark shadow. Another storm??? Adrenalin forces Bond to open one eye. A woman stands over him, smiling. "Well-cam to Jah-may-ikah!". A leather water bag is lowered down to his lips, and Bond almost drowns again as he consumes the liquid, coughing and spluttering. He lies on his back, broken, inside a broken boat, under the hot, hot sun, watching seagulls effortlessly caressing the blue sky above.
After two weeks of recouperation, Bond is well enough to explore the garden outside of his life-saving British Medical Field Clinic. The friendly woman walks beside him, propping him up like a crutch. She points as they draw near to a large sunflower. "Dis is da Golden Eye," she explains, "it is said dat A man looking for Gold can find it here in Jah-may-ikah.". Presently, a man wearing a very loud shirt draws up in a taxi, and is directed towards the garden. "Hi there Buddy!, I'm looking for a Brit called Jaymes Bahnd?". Bond: "You can bet your sockless sandals you found him." "My name is Gaz Lighter, "Sharkey" to my friends, and this is my boy, Felix." The boy smiles a youthful toothless grin. Gaz: "I grew up in Texas, bud I'm based in Florida right now. They sent me dowwn here to help ya out. Have ya gad a weapon?, like.. a guuun?". Bond: "Yes. I have a gun." He pulls out the small hand gun which he took from the large galley cook aboard Hitlers' evacuation liner, before the poop deck exploded. "Here's a German-made pistol." Gaz: "Ahh Yeah, a Walther PP. Good luck trying to find ammo for one of those junkers Sonny. Around here, we use Colts! - regular 45's!". He pulls out a gun. "Mine's a bigger, AYND a more powerful bucket kicker than yours". Bond lifts and eyebrow to the sound of a slide whistle. Bond, smiling: "I don't doubt it". Gaz "Are ye ready ta go?" Bond "I SYURE AM, BOY!".
