    This was my favourite Bond film as a kid. I dunno if it’s because of my age and because it was the first one I went to see in cinemas but I was in love with this movie. That opening is still incredible and I regularly listen to the soundtrack. I think the whole team had really fit into the groove of Brosnan at this point and did a lot of their best work.

    Brosnan has a special place in my heart as James Bond, under his stewardship I loved GoldenEye (And the N64 Game) but I became a little more than a fan with 'The World is not Enough', I started to buy each James Bond film as they came out, I got my first James Bond inspired purchase. I saved up for an Omega Seamaster 300 with the blue bezel, I dropped about 45 pounds and got into shape mostly because of Brosnan's physicality in the film, I realised no matter how well my suit fit, I still looked like Chris Farley cosplaying as Bond. (RIP Farley), Silver lining and all, I'm a healthier person, pretty much at my correct weight now all because I was influenced by (Brosnan's) James Bond.

    Fans lately don't appreciate Brosnan's effort in this one. In every frame of the film you can feel how hard he's trying. It's a breath of fresh air compared to Connery or Craig speaking up every time they were disillusioned with the role. Pierce wanted this to be a good movie, and he's the only Bond actor who seemed grateful to have gotten the role. Other than him the story, despite its issues, is one of the best in the series. The derided campy bits and flaws are found, sometimes worse, in plenty of other Bond movies.

I think this film stood out for its' ability to exploit Brosnan's agility...he moved as well or better than any other Bond, and the pretitle sequence with the boat and the hot air balloon...the underground scenes where he dodges that massive explosion and engages in a gunfight...and the aforementioned helicopter sequence...ALL relied heavily on his athleticism...

    If you want to introduce somebody to Bond movies in 15 minutes, pre title secuence of TWINE is the perfect expression of Bond: cool gunbarrel, action, elegance, fun, fireballs, stunts, beautiful places, pretty girl, bad guys, M, Q and his gadgets, David Arnold ost, vehicle chase, puns, even Brosnan pain face in the fall... Also title credits with The World Is Not Enough by Garbage is top in the saga.
    In minutes you can see the many faces of Brosnan Bond, relaxed, sarcastic, cold, seductive, educated, classy, implacable. More later with Elektra we can see his vulnerability, but this is about the first 15 minutes. I'm with you David, this is Brosnan peak as an actor, love Thomas Crown and TWINE, I think the haircut was key 😂😂
    Thanks for the video, with the Goldfinger anniversary a lot of people don't remember this great film and don't give the appretiation it deserves even in it's 25th anniversary. Born in 2000 and grown up with Brosnan Bond, this is MY Bond Film ❤️❤️.

  • @maxking235
    @maxking235 3 дні тому +2

    Great video David. I certainly agree. TWINE was my debut cinema Bond film, so I do have it close to my heart. The formula is present, but with a novel take on all the old tropes. Brosnan gives us a charmingly lethal portrayal, though the scripts more melodramatic moments, plays into Bronsan's foibles as an actor, being too animated, and less of the economy of movement that both the literary and cinematic versions of Bond should have. (Which goes against David's point, I will admit)
    The true standout of the picture is the villainous Elektra King, played with extreme relish by the gorgeous Sophie Marceau. She morphs from a winged dove, so favoured by Ian Fleming, into a megalomaniacal miscreant, with severe daddy issues.

    Elektra might be the best Bond villain from the Brosnan films because her character plays so well on what we know about Bond and how he interacts with women. Her being murdered in cold blood by Bond is one of the best moments for the Brosnan-led Bonds. The story, I don't think, is very complicated, but Renard is underused and Christmas Jones is... yeah. Taken as a whole, I'd put it second behind TND for the Brosnan Bonds.

    Jennifer Connelly [who was two years away from her Oscar for 'A Beautiful Mind'] would have been a good alternative as Dr Christmas Jones although that character was clearly not a priority in the writing according to the 'behind the scenes' book [and the character was going to be French before Sophie Marceau was cast as Elektra]. Allegedly MGM wanted Sharon Stone for Elektra post Basic Instinct...which would have made the twist fairly obvious!

    Maybe its just me, but even the Bond movies that are largely accepted as "Bad" I still enjoy. Roger Moore's Bond was campier than any other Bond and we all still love him. Brosnan was falling to the camp in his last 2 films pretty hard. Which is why when they went to Craig they went more serious. I feel we all forget that pre-9/11 movies were very different. Look at the Schumacher Batman films and then compare them to the Nolan Batman films. The world changed in 2001 and that mood was reflected in our art. Bond is not isolated from that. That was a big part of why Die Another Day fell flat on its face. It didn't fit the global tone of the time when it came out.

  • @dcwarden
    @dcwarden 3 дні тому +3

    It’s got all of the elements, but it just falls a bit flat for me. I think it was a wasted opportunity - after the opening titles, it never really takes advantage of the period - it could have been the Cool Britannia bond but instead it’s just a ho-hum action adventure with forgettable characters and forgettable locations. With a director who actually had some flair (maybe a Tony Scott or John Woo) and one of the myriad British thesps we were blessed with at the time as a properly diabolical Bond villain, I think it could have been a classic.
    But that is always my main complaint with Eon- taking the cheap/safe option with directors. Look at MI - Tom Cruise knows Mcquarrie is the man so he pays him whatever it takes to keep him on board. Eon struck gold with Martin Campbell and they should have paid him whatever it took to keep him- he should have been directing every Brosnan bond.

This is one of my favorite pre title sequences. The film score incredible. Brosnan in that banker scene, just pure Flemming Bond for me, just like Bond in Pushkins hotel room. Bonds glasses in casino room great gadget. Love this film.
    Rennard for me was well acted, just they built him up to be a Superman. Then on sub, his and Bonds fight, was a let down. I wanted an Alec Trevelyan ( still my fav villian) fight. But Rennard opposite of Whittaker for me. Whittaker didn’t have enough screen time. His villian was perfect for the eighties. Majarhadeen we’re on news then. But Whittaker showdown with Bond a fav of mine. His war rooms, with the lighting, weapons, had Bond for a bit. But I was so built up early on Rennard, then Electra stole the show. She ate up scenery on screen for me. I kinda forgot about Rennard.
    But love your take on Rennard, it fits perfectly. He is really the henchman. TWINE is great film. Goldeneye still my fav Film. ( only negative is score for me, except great Tank scene score).

    Lifestyle-wise, TWINE is actually a great film. Brosnan has his best haircut in this movie, his tuxedo is finally sans vest, it's one of the few Bond movies where he wears glasses as gadgets, and his suits are a tad more tailored than in previous Brosnan's entries.

    I also thought Brosnan looked very old in this movie, he was starting to look old in TND.... But this one he looked over the hill. I liked his youthful look in Goldeneye and again why I think it's a shame he didn't get the gig in the 80s. It's weird because with Craig his older look suits him more, but Brosnan it didn't and especially with that bushy hair of his which doesn't help.

I think this nostalgia makes them overrate that particular era of Bond films - I am not convinced most of Brosnan's output would be particularly remembered today if it did not have the Bond label attached. QOS is often criticised for the over manic editing, I think TWINE is the reverse. It plods along and needs to be tighter.

      I thought it was quite telling that when the Bond films were released in the cinema for the 60th anniversary, 3 of the 4 Brosnan films were the least popular.

    TWINE is Brosnan’s best. Some will prefer GoldenEye (I *never* knew the video game) but there is no argument (surely?) that this was a better film than Tomorrow Never Dies and that Die Another Day was a train wreck. If there has been no 25th Anniversary hype it is because the production company and promotion machine has gone fishing - they have nothing on hand for the next film so they don’t want to put their heads out above the trench.

    The World is Not Enough was the first James Bond movie I watched at the cinema. Great film. One of my favorite movies. At time I thought it was Pierce Brosnan's best Bond movie since GoldenEye. I liked Denise Richards and it's a shame she got shit on for playing Dr. Christmas Jones. I don't understand why Denise Richards got all the hate for playing Dr. Christmas Jones. She wasn't that bad.

    I've spent the past couple months rewatching over and over my least favorite Bond films. I've been very intentional about it. TMWTGG, Diamonds are Forever, You Only Live Twice, Moonraker, Die Another Day, Goldeneye (just kidding!!😂) Are some of my least favorite films, however, in doing so much intentional viewing of these productions I've gained a new appreciation for each of them! Though I'll likely never be able to appreciate them like I do my favorites I'm now able to watch them and enjoy them as they were intended. Though Diamonds will almost always be at the bottom of the heap for me... An eternal cellar dweller. And yes, TWINE was in that list and I've gained a new appreciation for it as well!

    Best promotion of Brosnan era:
    1. The World Is Not Enough. It has nice balance and in my opinion last good promotion.

    Goldfinger's 60th has overwhelmed all the other Bond anniversaries this year. Nobody seems to care about the 50th of The Man With the Golden Gun.

    Brozza pound for pound had the best pre-titles of all the Bond Actors, and TWINE was his Rumble in the Jungle. I'm not sure the analogy hangs together but I'm sticking with it.

    One of my all time favorite Bond movies. No one has ever been able to convince me that TWINE is anything less than a Top 10. There are films that I rationally rank higher, but I put on way less. Prosnan is at his peak here, and my honest opinion on Denise Richards: She is super average in this role. Believable? No. Fun? Absolutely.

    Couldn't agree more David, especially around Brosnan's depth or darkness. TWINE is seen as less serious than Goldeneye but when is Pierce more believable - in that terrible scene on the beach with Natayla talking 006 or when he shoots Elektra. He's awesome and the whole film hits that 3rd 007 rule

    7:44 The end of Spectre? It is not exactly THE end of Spectre. There's still a big chunk of the movie after he escapes the lair. But granted, it is like a video game. And what about NTTD? It feels like a video game to me every time someone uses a gun. Nobody is saying anything right now, but I feel this will change in the future. Remember, I said it first, right here. 😁Cheers. 😉

    I think that is one Bond film that needs very little defending as most folk think that's Brosnan's 2nd best.
    David, I do have a rather odd thought for you though. Without getting overtly political, there's a guy who you may be familiar who was briefly in the trump administration and co-hosts The Rest is Politics US called Anthony Scaramucci. He's actually a very savvy, whip-smart guy, and very loaded! Anyway, it seems that he is a huge Bond fan, who's into the style side of 007 as well as the films. Now, a conversation between you two I think would be fascinating.
    ps; VERY creepy Brosi head!

    It's probably time for me to re-watch the Bronson movies. I never cotton to these as much. Saw these new ones and always felt detached. The plots, actions, villains, and motivations were all in place. Yet, it lacked engagement. Perhaps these movies were too steely and sleek. Perhaps i was looking for something else?
    FWIW, i like Bronson. Especially in The Fourth Protocol, Thomas Crown Affair, and Grey Owl. Also, i admire Die Another Day. It was a Marvel movie before we knew what one was. It's like a Roger Moore movie storyboarded by Jim Steranko (Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
