I’m heading out on the Excel for an 8 day trip. Which wahoo trolling lures , color and size do you recommend? Also what size trolling harness?

I'll suggest having at minimum 2 DTX Minnows - 220 size and ONE MagTrak and I'd also suggest a large jet El Sincero. You will want two DTX's, in the event one is lost or damaged by a wahoo. On some trolling positions they'll run fine, however they won't track well at some speeds/skipper speed dependent. That's when the MagTrak comes into play. Note our 2021 video and discussion regarding these lures. Might be worthwhile to view the new video I posted yesterday. I rig the DTX's on 275# 49 strand cable, not a harness. The MagTrack can be run on a 175# or 275# harness - 49 strand cable. The El Sincero comes pre rigged. Hit me at the shop, email thru our site, for better info. www.charkbait.com

No single answer, different conditions will influence. Size of boat can make a bit of a difference, too in terms of what can be managed. In general, speed is a bit of a turn on for wahoo, they don't mind going fast. For the DTX I'd be looking at 7-10 knots, but best to watch how the lure is behaving in the spread - it's easy to tell if the speed is too fast, the lure won't track. Private boat vs Long Range SD based boat, different situations, common issues. We don't see the LR boats doing much above 10-12 knots cruising speed anyway. On the private boat front, there are times we're running lures well over 12 knots, but those should NOT be DTX Minnows. That's more the right time for jets. Marauder style lures are also less sensitive to speed than a DTX. The more speed the greater the downward force exerted by the lure's lip. There comes a time when it's TOO MUCH PRESSURE.
