  • In this short seminar I go over what I believe to be the easiest way to catch Wahoo. An exciting in-studio & hands-on out on the water seminar, planer trolling the deep edge of the reef for Wahoo. I go over what I consider to be the most useful information to help you successfully planer troll the deep edge of reef in search of these veracious, mysterious and elusive predators. Also explained, are some basics on how to set your planer using braid, planer trolling rig, setup and how to hook up a strip bait, depth to fish, the best time of year to target them, and how to use your GPS to find fishing spots. If you're into catching giant Wahoo, or want to learn about the process, this episode's definitely for you.
    Enjoy,
    Tight lines & good vibes.

Easy, practical, and very effective. You
    demonstrating the rig construction and
gear layout shows shows the overall
simplicity of your slow speed planer
trolling for wahoo. Must have listened
and viewed this video for at least an
hour to absorb ALL the info being put out.
Nothing better than catching TARGETED fish.
    Congratulations & TIGHT lines always.

Thanks a bazillion for watching and leaving some excellent feedback. Truly humbling to hear how much you enjoyed. It definitely is a lot of info packed into a 24 minutes, but it should definitely help. Wahoo are tricky, I'm always thankful to get even one in a year, but I truly believe the window of opportunity to target them is tiny. Can't thank you enough for your support of the channel and always being here making this happen. Sincerely. Tight lines & take care ;)

Thanks a million for watching sharing and asking a great question. So my main line is 80 lb braid. I have that hooked to a 300 lb swivel which is then connected to a number 6 planer. Then I have a hundred feet of 60 lb monofilament leader. And that is hooked directly onto my lure which has about 16 to 18 in of number four 40 lb wire leader. There is no additional shock cord on top of my leader. No use for it. Glad to hear you're slaying the wahoo I've I've heard they've been chewing pretty good these last couple of weeks wish I was able to get out fishing up the Palm Beach area. Hope this helps. After my 1st this year I started with a planer in my spread and it also took 2 30lb mahi when it got crowded at the spot. How do I attach this video’s lure to my mainline in a way that I can quickly switch from this lure to different lures? I’ve been watching a lot of videos which describe using different techniques, but I’ll bet you have a better technique than all of them put together. With any of these leaders, I want to be able to reel-in all the way without having to hand retrieve the leader. I’m not physically able to do that.

You're gonna want to learn how to use what's called a bridle to hook up your planer if you want to reel all the way in without hand lining. Plain and simple.... I don't recommend it simply because it's extra hardware passing through the guides which can damage the connecting points. My preference is always hand lining in your sea monster. Hope this helps.

Thanks a boat for watching some more. I agree, when I travel, fish act different in different areas. If I go to the Keys, I will highspeed troll for wahoo with dark colors, but where I'm located they react more on planers and bright colors in overcast skies. It has taken years to learn this fishery, through many trials and failures, but as time went on, I got dialed in and became comfortable enough to go target them and find them in a very small window of opportunity. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I sincerely appreciate it, couldn't get this done without you. Tight lines & take care ;)

What should I do if he makes another run after I start hand lining the leader? Wear gloves and hope the excess doesn’t get caught? Love your videos and awesome fish!!

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. There's a full length episode on my channel of this fish being caught and it did make a run as I was hand lining it in. Which is always expected. No, you don't need gloves. If the fish is gonna run, let him run. When you are hand lining in a planer leader like this, don't bundle the leader up on your deck, you should let it loop back out behind your boat, as you are in slow forward, that way, if the fish does run, your line won't get knotted up. Hope this helps. I have several episodes on the channel that cover planer trolling and exactly how to do it and help walk you through these exact concerns of yours. Thanks again for your support, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Is there any reason why planers are Bethany downriggers? Or do they both work well? The speed of trolling perhaps? Thank you for the great videos.

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Downriggers work just as effectively as planners and getting you down in the water column. I personally prefer planers over downriggers it's one less piece of equipment on the boat and yes speed is a factor. I troll pretty fast because I truly believe that trolling is the pursuit of fish that are hunting I want them to strike my bait immediately and not have a second thought about it. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your sporty channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Thanks a boat load for watching and sharing. Bahamas wahoo do come rather large.... If I had to say, the bahamas ledges hold some of the biggest hoos in the world. Fishing the reef off Florida is a little trickier, but they are there. Thanks again for your support of the channel, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Once again great video. Can you troll two planers at the same time behind the boat and if so what is the best way e.g different size planers or distance. Cheers

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes, you can troll 2 planers at one time. They have to be 2 different sizes, like a #3 and a #6 or any assortment, they just shouldn't be the same weight. The way you do is... The lighter one will be let out first, and it will be your long line (about 200 feet of main line)... The heavier one will be let out second, it will be your short line (about 100 to 125 feet of main line) This will keep you from getting tangled. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

Do you ever troll with 2 planers at a time? Or do you risk tangles?

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes you can troll multiple planers. They have to be 2 different sizes. You'll want to let the small one out first, and let it out further. The larger one goes out second and is the short line. If you do it that way, you won't get tangled. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
