Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? It's one of the greatest pop songs ever!
Because music is subjective.

@@normanno8514 actually laughed at that
TOTALLY AGREE
She had the best voice , always clever and very catchy lyrics, still play her now .
Kirsty was an incredible talent and an incredible HUMAN being Beautiful voice Beautiful human being R.I.P KIRSTY
Gone but never forgotten thanks to her catalogue of awesome songs. An amazingly talented lady, greatly missed. X
Like so many of Ms Macolls' songs this one is a combination of beautiful vocals and bitter sweet lyrics. Sorely missed talent. And gorgeous to boot.
Last time I was in Brighton I stood at pretty much the same spot Kirsty stands in the video and played the song through my headphones.
I miss Kirsty so much. Obviously I never knew her but she was one of those artists who's a bit different from everyone else and doesn't hug the limelight like certain artists do. And yet Kirsy was so good that she should have been bigger than Prince Michael Jackson and Madonna put together. Somehow it never works out that way for these quirky little yet brilliant artists.
The jangly paisley rhythm that evokes the West Coast sound of California was big in this era, but fits this song particularly well. An upbeat sound that could easily place this setting in California, instead of Australia.
The "happy" sound paired with the "sad" tone in her resigned lyrics is the magic that makes Kirsty's songs so beautiful and compelling. And it's interesting that using the jangly sound of California from the 60s/80s here seems ironic, to bust the mythos of Sunny California or "Brilliant" Australia the music evokes. They're gorgeous places - but happiness isn't guaranteed there.
Such a great talent. Kirsty wrote such great catchy pop songs. I discovered her a bit late but like they say better late than never.
she sang the best songs i am not even ten and i like
her my friends dont like old songs but she was amazing😘 kirsty maccoll R.I.P
You have great taste Suzie xx
Suzy. Suggest you get your parents to bring you to Kirstyfest in London in October. There are one or two other teenagers who usually come, and everyone is very friendly.
One of the most gifted singers who is so sadly missed
She definitely deserved more recognition
Irresistible pop from a much missed incredible talent
Kirsty sent me this single when I imigrated to Sydney. One day I'll make my own video of this wonderful song.
Stop bullshitting
Are you by chance, a drummer? Was this song written about you?
Did u learn to surf?
She was so beautiful and such a great mother to take her own life to save her kids her kids she should be so proud that she loved them that much and was so brave
bravery didn't get her very far did it...if that was me i'd push my kid in front of that boat so i could escape unhurt, better to be a live coward than a dead hero.
@@davidfelix2594 do you have children? If you do then I hope they grow up with enough sense to realise what a selfish bastard you are. Genuinely disgusted by your comment.
@@davidfelix2594 lol, very good
@@davidfelix2594 Da fuck is wrong with you?! Please tell me you're joking?
She was almost cut completely in half, long ways by the propeller.
Just imagine if her son got hit? It would have cut him into PIECES!!
Those harmonies....
Do a remix please.
What a beautiful, gifted woman!! So sad she had to leave us so sad x
Wonderful song - one of my favourites of Kirsty's - love the harmonies in particular. It was not a hit! How is this possible!!!
A beautiful song from a beautiful songwriter and performer. A song that tells a story and you can picture her thoughts unlike a lot of music today. Long live real music and long live the music and imagination that was Kirsty MacColl x
Man , beautiful gods got a angel.
This is one of my all time favourites of hers...and i love nearly all of Kirsty's songs.
Long before I saw a picture of Kirsty I fell in love with her voice it was so distinct so clear and you could hear every word she sang what a great loss
I absolutely love her voice
@@trixie8009 Yes I agree Kirsty was such a great talent with such a beautiful voice.
She was very attractive. Just a wonderful lady. Miss you, Kirsty
She's brilliant
Never heard this song before. Sounds amazing and tangentable to rilo kiley
Back in 1989 I was in a band that made an album and made some money. One day I just took off from Chicago and moved to Key West - hardly anyone knew. After I got there I sent them all postcards...
Ha, that's the way it was, in the 90s I was working on a ship with the same name as another ship that sank, with no way of contacting family and friends it was only three days later when I finally got to a telephone in Italy that I phoned home and my parents said "well we did wonder but we're glad you're alive"😂 what an interesting story Hannah sounds like an exciting chapter in your life.
Love you Kirsty R I P
This would be one of my desert island discs, its so singalongy and soulful. Plus I'd have loved to get stranded on a dersert island with Kirsty, she was mighty fine!
Great song, great lyric
My home town - Brighton!
Always reminds me of "Wish you were Here" the film.
I loved Kirsty. Her death was incredibly sad, for everyone particularly her sons.
RIP Kirsty
A lovely person and natural musician. Superb talent, flair and fun.
Both this and "A New England" are beautifully reimagined Billy Bragg songs
Yes, he's on the beach Kirsty, thanks to you.
Thank you for uploading.
LOvely voice, lovelier person. Taken from us too soon.
The beach and the sea. Her fate!

I remember Trev Johnson saying he stood waiting on set during the video recording
?
'He's On The Beach' is a wonderful song also is Kirsty pregnant in this video.
She is beautiful I love to have Kirsty to be my wife I be so proud. R.I.P KIRSTY.
Beautiful and Groovy too. Such a Clever record that sounds great as the years pass (apart from the awful Orchestral stabs! Fairlight perhaps, or would it be a Synclavier?)
If you replace the word ‘Australia’ in the lyric with the word ‘Heaven’, it gives the song another dimension…
Australia is Heaven … to the British
😉
Is this song about that MP who left is his clothes on a beach and was found in Australia?
John Stonehouse? Good spot. I think the song's about a friend of Kirsty MacColl's but the video makes references to Stonehouse.
Amazing tune. Does anyone know who's playing guitar?
I have just checked my 12 inch of this song, its Wikipedia page, my Kirsty MacColl box set and other google searches and I can't find credit of the guitarist any of those places! Yes, this tune and artist are great.
Sounds very Johnny Marr
JM played his arse off for Kirsty
Very similar melody to A New England
Is that the old Weston Super Mare pier?
Its Brighton!
I'm guessing it's the one that's still there, not sure if that one has had a fire.
You mean the old West Pier at Brighton that's had two major fires and there's very little of it left now. That pier is not in this video because even in 1985 it was closed to the public. The pier in this video is the one that remains to this day.
If I remember right, it was in a terrible state. From what I've read, the one that is still there (Palace pier) is the only one I know of that has not had a major fire. It has had a small one but apparently opened the next day.
@@Edward1312 Brighton, you can tell by the pebble beach
Wow I have never seen the video, not the happy song I though it was... should have known better with Kirsty
here cause of Alvvays cover
Who plays guitar
Kirsty said Pete Glenister played guitar on "A New England", maybe he played on this one as well. Absolutely love the sound on both songs!

She was the Tiffany of Ireland
Johannes Romanides She was English, from Croydon in London. Her father was Scottish and her mother English.

Uncanny subject when you think she was swimming in the sea when she died.
you stupid effers are so stupid
Sounds similar to New England.
Does anyone know if Kirsty was pregnant when this video was filmed.
No, stupid Adam, we don't know that. Stupid Adam
I don't think so, but she was 7 months pregnant with Jamie (who she died for) when the "A New England" video was filmed.
what a waste!
Makes Porthtowan beach look great really good song huge loss 😢
Not the best singer but she is definitely up there
If only she’d remembered to duck!
bet she wishes she stayed off the coasts...
Eff you
