    Jeremy Renner was great in Mission Impossible. He would have done Fallout if it weren't for his large role in Avengers 4. He is no replacement for Cruise, but he is a great supporting character.

    Don't think of Renner as a replacement, think of him as the wakeup call. He's the reminder that everyone is replaceable. :-) MATT DAAAMOOONNN

      Which I think is a little unfair on poor Jeremy, I think he could make an excellent action lead but hes always supporting everyone. Somehow, even in the films he leads in like the Bourne film, he feels like he's supporting for someone who isn't in the film.

      Agree with all of you. But somehow I still see hope because when given roles of confident experts like in Hurt Locker or Wind River, Renner is laudably convincing.

    Ghost Protocol works so well because it's basically Set-Piece: The Movie. One set-piece after another after another, with only just enough plot tying them together. It works, and it's one of the most fun movies I've ever watched.

    I highly disagree with your statement of M:I 3 not having anything memorable. It has one of the best villains, and highest personal stakes for Ethan. RIP Hoffman, damn he was terrific in that film, as in most of his filmography.

      I probably should have mentioned PSH more, as yes he was terrifying and by far the best villain. My issue was that the film just really went so dark at times (which is not always a bad thing), that returning to it just isn't as fun. I wouldn't be against them going that way again, maybe it just would work better after a more solid entry.

  • @synlion
    @synlion 6 років тому +234

    I actually love MI:3. The warehouse scene in the beginning is fantastic because it shows a plan that is almost perfectly executed, the Vatican scene shows amazing infiltration, and the ending removes all the big stakes and makes it very personal and intense. One of, if not my absolute, favorite.

      MI3 has one of the alltime great cruise runs👌 that tracking shot when hes on phone is bout 1 min of the cruise run. Ghost protocol had the 2nd best cruise run the epic sandstorm T.C run. Then we have fallout which has the best T.C run and the best T.C runnin shot that ends with the broken ankle. My point IS the 3 best mission film ghost pro MI3 and fallout ALL have the 3 best cruise runs. Co incidence i think not....

    The first is well directed and has great characters but has a very inconsistent story. The second is messy in all regards and the only good thing about it is its unique style and crazy action which even then takes away from the tone of the other movies completely. Changing Tom Cruises character into James Bond instead. The third is well directed and paced but has no personality and therefor becomes forgettable. But gives us back the character we grew to love. Then the 4th came in and took everything the others had in their favor and boosted it. The firsts great characters it took and boosted, the seconds crazy action and stunts it took and boosted, the thirds fast pace and large setpieces it took and boosted. Lacking only a well written villain. The 5th came in and did the same as the 4th but this time with a good villain. You can argue wether or not its better. I find the 4th to be more its own movie than the 5th. But the 6th took everything from every movie and used its full potential. Bringing the best action and smoothest pace and directing the movies have had yet. Along with great characters and pretty good writing. John Wick might be the best action trilogy so far. But it needs to do damn well to beat Mission Impossible after Fallout

You're complaining about not me being fair to something I literally call the best action film franchise. • @Elementa2006
      @Elementa2006 6 років тому +5

      DiamondDead The first film for me was just an above average action thriller that took away what made the Mission Impossible TV series stand out from other espionage franchises like James Bond, the team aspect, true he had a team but the first were killed off and the second were either traitors or second fiddle while Ethan Hunt stole the spotlight and turning the tv show's major character Jim Phelps into a traitor felt like a slap in the face to fans of the original TV series and would feel like if someone turned a member of the original Star Trek cast evil just to push a new character. So yeah, I don't particularly care for the first the first film.

    • @Salsmachev
      @Salsmachev 6 років тому +3

    • @Salsmachev
      @Salsmachev 6 років тому +2

      I strongly disagree. Each one follows a different part in our relationship with toys, and Toy Story Three explores the final chapter, where we really do move beyond our toys but we still love them and understand that that's something to share with the next generation. None of the films felt unnecessary to me.

    • @brendanspaulding7930
      @brendanspaulding7930 6 років тому +1

      T.R. Salsman Toy story already did the moving on thing with the main bad guy, it also had similar flashbacks of toys being left behind by previous owners. Toy story 3 just repeated all of it in a more obvious way. I don’t think the 3rd was bad or unnecessary to a certain extent it just was a retread.

    As usual Rossatron, this was great commentary on one of my favorite action franchises. Films that are sparse on plot and heavy on action are usually denigrated by film critics as "low brow". However, the level effort put into the action sequences of the Mission Possible franchise elevate to a high art form , even if it is devoid of an in depth plot or the character development that the more artsy film buffs look for. I have a feeling that history will look back on Tom Cruise's action work in Mission Impossible the way art historians view Michelangelo

    Haven't seen Fallout yet and didn't have much expectations for it but after hearing it's the most critically acclaimed of the series, I'm suddenly a hundred times more excited to check it out. Ghost Protocol is so far my favorite of all the MI movies and actually got me interested in the franchise. Rogue Nation was good but sort of underwhelming in comparison. If Fallout can surpass Ghost Protocol then this might be the most surprisingly entertaining film I've seen this year. (besides Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, who saw that one coming?)

      I actually found Fallout extremely underwhelming. There really isn't any tension at all in the finale. The tried way too hard by making everything laughably close. And then there's some redundant plot twists that you really can't have been surprised by if you ever saw a film (pretty much the same kind of plot twist as in Rogue Nation). The first two acts were great and on par with Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, but the third act ruined my overall impression of the script and thus the movie. Some stuff from the movie could've just as well been M:I 2 with better effects. I have no idea why anyone would claim this film is better than Ghost Protocol or Rogue Nation (which I loved). Also there was no spy tech at all, which I found to be one of the things making the series as fun as it is.

    The first Mission Impossible is one of the best action spy thrillers ever. Truly creative and classy. Probably the most clever entry, that doesn't let the great action overpower the suspense.
    MI2. Ugh. Just stupid John Woo slo-mo doves and a dud of a relationship for Ethan.

    Saying that the first film is not a classic is honestly objectively incorrect if you just look at the way it's generally regarded. Is it considered a classic because of its quality? No, but it is considered a classic because it has one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history and it's the one that started it all.

  • @agt_pendergast8899

    Honestly, I would say M:I 2 is the weakest for me. I mostly just remember it for the bike chase at the end. It doesn't have a 'break into the place to steal the thing' set-piece anywhere near as memorable or tense as anything else in the series, and as you said already, the villain is not that great either. But man, I think you nailed it with Cruise owning his crazy moniker.

    • @5RWill

      The main thing i remember from M:I 2 and my favorite scene is when you think Hunt gets killed. The movie might suck but Zimmer's little piece coupled with the tell of Hugh being the one behind the mask with the bandaged finger, is done really well IMHO.

      Actually, for me - MI3 has the weakest "break into the place to steal the thing" sequence. Better to say - there was no such sequence. Yeah, i remember that building with a rabbit's foot, but the whole stealing scene was just cutted or never made, so we can only see how Ethan is entering and exiting, nothing interesting.

    • @agt_pendergast8899
      @agt_pendergast8899 5 років тому +1

      I consider the Vatican sequence to be that scene with Phillip Seymour Hoffman to be the 'thing to steal' in question. A bit of a cheat? Eh maybe, but the only ones I remember in 2 was the race track and the bio building, and honestly I don't remember much about them at all other than Thandie stealing something from Dougrays pocket and putting it back in the wrong one at the racetrack, and a shootout in the bio building when Thandie inject herself with the virus and Tom jumps out a hole in the wall.
      The building with the rabbit foot is about equivalent to the bio building for me, and the Vatican trumps the racetrack easily as far as I'm concerned.

    • @Unshoshable
      @Unshoshable 5 років тому

      Dude, tecbnically, yeah. It's possible to imagine PSH as that thing, buuuuut - even after all of this - i am still going to agree with video's author - 3'rd movie was just OK. I really prefer second one more. Maybe it is stupid in most cases, but at least rememorable and with a style, which isn't good for a huge amount of people, but still has his own fans, like myself.
      "What about the reason of your putting MI2-stealing-scene above MI3?" - you may ask, and get "I really enjoyed action sequence, Ambrose dialogue with Ethan, Zimmer's music, and cameraman's work over there." as an answer.
      Opinions - like onions. They tastes differently in each dish:3

And it's the film that finally understood what Mission is: Fast paced action packed film with an emphasis on the team.
    Oh and "nothing memorable", hello, Vatican infiltration, tense stand off, highway action sequence, I remember these well.

      Yeah, Rossatron has a way of arrogantly presenting his opinion as fact while ignoring the wider talk around a film.
      He may not find the first film to be a classic, and that's fine. But he flatly ignores the film's reputation has held up for over 20 years.
      He may not think MI3 is memorable, and that's fine. But he flatly ignores it's a solid fan favorite that people hold in high regard.

  • @nope5657
    @nope5657 6 років тому +31

    Ugh what? The first is very much a classic.
    MI:3..."nothing memorable?" What? That's the film that reinvigorated the series for fans and critics alike. It's still considered by many to be the best of the series.
    I also have to scoff at your "shaky" comment. It's almost a reflex with you you can't help. Shaky doesn't mean bad. And none of the shaky camera work in the film is in any way sloppy.

    • @Rossatron
      @Rossatron  6 років тому +5

      I don't like using it as an example of quality, but in terms of the earlier films if you look at something like Rotten Tomatoes you'll see none of them are universally liked, with the first at the time critically considered an okay film, but definitely not a classic. And in terms of the shakiness, I say the action is at times very assured if pretty shaky, that's all. It's my preference, like clearly for McQuarrie and Cruise, that action be less quick cut and shaky. You can disagree, but going back and watching it now I just feel like it goes overboard with it. Again though it's my preference, this is just my channel to talk about action films, you don't have to agree.

    • @shaqattack4833
      @shaqattack4833 5 років тому +4

      Rossatron Mi3 set the tone for movies like The Dark Knight. You're talking nonsense if you think Rotten Tomatoes and the overall critics are a valuable reference. Mi3 is full of memorable scenes: the bridge, the toilet scene, the interrogation, the roof running in Shanghai, the rescue mission at the beginning, etc.

    What makes Mission Impossible, for me at least, is lessons learned... from Jackie Chan. While Cruise hasn't yet reached the consistent quality of Chans heyday, it is clear that he has taken some very serious notes about how Chan made his career. Especially starting with Ghost Protocol. Ethan hunt transformed from theall powerful badass of MI2 (still underrated, in my regard) and became more a normal human in way over his head somehow surviving increasingly insane situations by recklessly throwing himself around into dangerous situations using equipment that barely works reliably. All the while the camera is recording in steady long wideshots. Picking up the emotions of Ethan. Anger, frustration, fear and excitement. That way we see who is doing the stunts and who is doing what so we can concentrate on enjoying the thrills instead of just spending all of the precious viewing seconds desperately trying to decipher who is doing what (I'm talking about you, MI3 and your Bourne sequels inspirations).

    Ok I finally have to say this. Your cuts are sometimes just incredible. 04:59 what even is this ? A match/swipe/camera cut on action ??? I noticed this in earlier videos of you but this cut especially finally made me write this comment. Outstanding work 👍
    Edit: 08:47 and this ? Are you kidding me ?

    • @Rossatron
      @Rossatron  6 років тому

      Thanks for noticing, it's actually very easy, just about keeping an eye out for moments that will cut well. Action films often utilise whip pans with action so finding two in different scenes that whip the same direction and just cutting between them when it has the most motion blur and looks most natural. The other is a match cut such as how Stanley Kubrick/Ray Lovejoy did with the bone/spaceship in 2001, that's just about having a sense of visually what matches both in terms of still image around the cutting points, and making sure the flow of action matches in terms of direction/rotation/pace etc.

    The only other franchise that in my opinion challenges the Mission Impossible is the John Wick.
    Similarities between Tom and Keanu are interesting when you think about it, both of them are great actors that really really love their job and are ready to do some of the craziest stunts themselves. Not to mention that both are not as young as they used to be but they still are biggest names in the action genre.
    There is a BIG difference in my own experience and enjoyment of the film when I know that either Tom or Keanu has done most if not all the crazy stunts and action sequences!

    To me, Lethal Weapon will always stay my favourite action movie franchise. Yes, the last two movies were not the best, but to me the portrayal of Riggs' and Murtaugh's relationship and their on screen-chemistry is just the best. Awesome films. M:I never really gripped me. Where LW1 and 2 had a lot of heavy, emotional stuff in it, M:I always struck me as not as deep. But that is just my opinion.

    Now that Top: Gun Maverick has hit $1.5 Billion...just imagine how much that is going to raise the profile of the final two Mission Impossible films?
    Tom Cruise has just solidified and elevated himself to his highest star power EVER. Maverick is one of the biggest films of all time. The trailer for MI7 was attached to every showing, and Tom Cruise is bigger than ever and going even crazier with the stunts than ever.
    Paramount is going to unleash the floodgates when it comes to marketing and promoting 7 and 8. I think both have the potential to be just as big as, if not bigger, than Top Gun: Maverick. Top Gun was a bit of a surprise for everyone. With MI7 and 8, Paramount is going to go all-out to set them up to be the biggest hits in the history of the studio.
