So how was 2019 for action films? Well, we have had better years, but we've had worse ones too. There were some diamonds in the rough, so find out which they were in this comprehensive dive into what I thought of the action cinema of 2019.

I kind of lost faith in this guy after he repeated the "Empire was divisive when it came out" lie that Rian Johnson made up, but, yeah. Editing and the quality of videos are really good. Hope he starts to double check his facts/sources when making a video though.

I just wanted to say thanks for getting me into Scott Adkins, as last year you recommended Accident Man from director Jesse V. Johnson, which led me to this years Avengement. Seriously if you guys haven't seen it, it's the perfect example of how you do a lot with very little. It's small budget and scale, but thanks to its committed talent, it shines as a brutal Guy Ritchie-esqe almost grindhouse action flick.
Agree! The story was good, the action was intense and it was something original but on a much smaller budget.
The edit going from Shazam to John Wick in the intro was so seamless I had to watch it again to see just how you snuck it in there. Floored by the quality as always.
When I watched 6 Underground I couldn't stop thinking about your term "consistently inconsisten", seeing as it sometimes had pretty hard subjectmatter abruptly interrupted by jokes. But as you say, it's really just Bayhem at its finest.

John Wick 3 takes the cake this year, easily. The dedication Keanu puts into this role truly is breathtaking.

I am glad you talked about Shadow. I haven't seen many people talk about that film. Every frame of it was wallpaper worthy. One of the most visually appealing movies I have ever seen.

Please talk more about Michael Mann, he is one of the greatest action directors there is. Your video on Heat is great but he has other movies with great action sequences that aren't much talked about (always with his perfect blend of credibility and style).
Any thoughts on doing something similar to this but for the decade? Be interesting to have a retrospective on where the genre started out and ended up. Although technically, the end of 2020 would be the time to do it.

Honestly my favorite action movie of the year was DBS Broly. I'm kinda biased because I love DBZ but when it comes to animated action , theres literally nothing better and I loved it

Michael J has been underrated and overlooked for decades. The man is a legend.
No mention of "Warrior",the tv-show based on an old concept by Bruce Lee,produced by his daughter and the guys behind "Banshee"?
It´s great show,basically "Gangs of New York" but set in 1880´s San Francisco and involving chinese Tong gangs.
Andrew Koji is a very charismatic lead and also Joe Taslim (The Raid,The Night Comes For Us) is starring as a badass Tong enforcer. The fight between the 2 in ep. 9 is really good.
Anna was better than I expected. The lead actress did a good job as Anna.

Just finished the first episode of Witcher on Netflix and I was actually quite impressed by the fighting scenes with Cavill. Not sure if that kind of genre is your thing, but if it is, take a look and let us know what you think.

I can't believe you didn't include Warrior from Cinemax. It had really great fight scenes, good plot, set pieces and pacing. If you haven't seen it then I wholly recommend you check it out. Other than that great job.

Alita: battle angel manga is definitely a must read, although there's 2 ending whether you want to end the reading or continue to the sequel.
This video made me want a video on martial arts tv shows from the old school stuff like Martial Law to Into the Badlands ... any chance it might be on your to do list ?
To be honest, doing something like that would require a hell of a lot of time simply to go back and watch everything. It would maybe be possible as a series, but I'm not sure there's the appetite for it. Maybe if the channel gets bigger and I can do it full time, but not at the moment.

You should have waited until you saw The Witcher. I have seen the three first episodes, and the first episode has some impressive swordplay, and I can't wait to see what more it has to offer. Also Henry Cavill supposedly didn't use any stunt double in the fight scenes (I assume the swordplay stuff, and not the monster fight, as some of that stuff seem to hurt).

Well currently for 2020 we had bad boys but that's about it for action everything else got delayed
Heh. Sometimes I feel like I don't get excited about anything anymore but I found that you disliked some of the same films I did. At least I know I'm not alone lol. I did not know Chad Stahelski was directing the action for Birds of Prey. As a fan of the group, I have zero faith this will be a good adaptation but maybe it can one of those movies where I can revisit scenes.
I should have made it clear he is handling at least some (if not all) of the second unit, and a lot of the action direction. I imagine it will be similar to his role on Civil War, but perhaps a bit more involved.
I don't like fight scenes where the characters make pointless flips and run around, and their weapons get edited out.

Great video, but I thought Night Comes for Us was one of the better action films of the year, an interesting mix of crime noir, martial arts and slasher level gore. I saw some shots in the video but you did not even mention it.
Because it came out in 2018 and featured heavily in last years video

Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy (2018)
I liked the choreography in Anna. It was the best thing about the film. Otherwise, I found it to be boring? I agree about the tone of Master X being inconsistent, but I still enjoyed the film a lot. I need to see Avengement. How can you not mention Warrior in terms of action TV shows? It’s fantastic. Into the Badlands season 3 is also worth bringing up. The writing in the final season of GoT was so bad, I couldn’t really enjoy whatever good action it had properly.
Every time the phrase "This video is sponsored by..." is said, god's finger comes an inch closer to smiting us.
The initial sponsorship part is 3 seconds long, and the rest is kept to the very end. I think god will be okay with that, and probably understands how long something like this takes to put together.

In terms of action on tv, Warrior was fantastic.
If you liked Climax, you HAVE TO watch other movies of the director, Gaspar Noe, mostly Enter the Void - you will be surprised... you can also try Irreversible but I warn you - it's not a pleasant movie (but cinematics is absolutely amazing there).
I wouldn't classify Marvel movies as "action" films. Technically they have action, but there's something missing, i fund them quite bland in terms of action. Like wanting to hear jazz and ending up hearing elevator music
They can be bland action films, but they're still action films. They've pretty much replaced the American muscle bound hero (think Commando or Rambo).
@@Rossatron I mean, it's not like I don't like Marvel movies, or that I prefer 90's one man army (because most of them were not good films) it's kind of the feeling of let down every time there is a fight. I wish they put as much effort in the fights as they do in world building. Just my two cents

I actually liked "shazam" quite a bit. Mostly cause of the characters. But i get fatigue. Spiderman far from home worked for me for the first time i saw it. But the 2nd i was a lil tired. I might like it when i see it again. Maybe in a decade lol.
As a GODZILLA fan and even though i enjoy it overall i feel "king of the monsters" couldve been way better. And i feel more fans should want it too. Everybody is sayin all they care about are the kaiju battles. And im like i just wish the movie felt more cinematic like storytelling impact,sense of awe and wonder,a good tone. Which i feel godzilla is more than capable of. So why the insistence to keep it "generic blockbuster". Its not like this movie really fixed the character and monster screentime issue some people had with the 2014 movie. Like there were cool kaiju stuff in the end then alot of the mom and dad searching for their daughter blandness. Then 10 seconds of monster. Repeat.
