John Wick: The franchise that we never knew we needed
the franchise that should have stopped after 1 movie
I never though John Wick would become so popular and when i saw the first film,i was not ready.I m glad to see something without the Marvel/DC/Disney brand that brought some fresh air to an genre currently dominated by CGI and super heroes.Say whatever you want about John Wick but it s franchise worth to watch.
@@miltontavares9506 i don't seem to get enough of john wick really
@@miltontavares9506 Same here also i've watched the first and second movies several time just cause i cant find any other movie to be that engaging. This franchise is really immersive and i love the action sequences.
@@damankhaira7952 Me too.I also the world and the characters.I dig assassin stuff and John Wick works so well.As for Keanu Reeves,he looks better than never.
While I absolutely enjoy listening to the thoughtful analysis of the John Wick franchise... I also really appreciate those little editing flourishes like at 8:29.
GreyknightGhost oh yeah, that’s lush.
for sure...
I mean shit, that's just good editing.

John wick is the reason I hate Jason Bourne's Shaky cams.
Dev Yadav John Wick Is COMPLETELY SAVAGE Than Jason Bourne.
We're truly in a Keanu Renaissance. John Wick's getting a little too over-the-top with the third installment but since it's a great excuse for awesome action, I'm all in for the ride. Let's just hope The Matrix sequels can continue Keanu's action legacy without ruining his original action franchise....
I just thought the motorcycle sword fight and surviving a fall from a however-many-story building made the third the least realistic.
@Andrew Chin My take 2 on both scenes.
Keanaissance
Matrix and John Wick 4s were scheduled to release together.
Matrix 4 was horrible john is the new
A Breathtaking movie franchise. Can't wait for the 4th one

I feel like John Wick is building up to an emotional and poignant finale. I wouldn't really want the series to go on indefinitely as that would rob it of the sense that John is fighting a war he can't win. That's what hits me so hard about these movies. Wick is a near mythic figure of death and destruction, but he struggles for every little victory he has and that struggle is permeated with the sense that it's leading to an inevitable, inescapable tragic conclusion.
We are witnessing his profession post-wife and all the emotions he repressed/never required/had available prior to his meeting his wife. Having somewhat of a soul will, at times, impair/impede necessary actions to be performed. His character prior to his wife was one of an efficient killing machine and even though there were "relationships" in his life, they were mainly on a "business level". This is a world within a world, one that revolves around the notion of honor and respect among killers and thieves. A world we know in reality does not exist at level at this point in time. There may have been a time when this environment had its moments, but they were fleeting.
@@ernestpaul2484 I'm honestly asking if you really dont think people still operate like this today? Cuz you sound like a naive 12yr old quiere girl at the end there bud.
@@palehorse24681 Keep pedaling, you;ll catch up. The underworld of criminals and those that are tasked to dispatch problems are real Jose. I was saying that the level of which this movie, that is made to entertain and be hopefully profitable, does not reflect that underworld as it exits now. There were, I imagine, when despite their evil intent, times that men displayed an honor code for killing one another. Actually the mafia had restrictions on cop killings. Any lower level member that killed a cop without being ordered to do so by a don or his representative was dealt with accordingly.Other hits were decided and farmed out to those that specialized in the field. And just so you are tracking, I am a 61 year old straight guy with a life full of experience in the real world in a variety of environments.
@@ernestpaul2484 your age and your sexual orientation have to do what with your answer? (That's a very distracting statement ul and write). I understand what you said. You didnt have to re write it. „What led to the rise of John Wick?“
Unlike most movie directors these days, they tried to make good action scenes that are enjoyable to watch.
It was hard work and it paid off,John Wick made me believe in action inside Hollywood.
The editing is superb. Especially that intro. I love the John Wick series. Glad you did this one bro. Hoping you do Avengement and Furie as well.
They'll certainly pop up in my 2019 action film review
@@Rossatron Hell yeah. Can't wait. John Wick 3 was hands down the movie I was waiting for this year. But I might have to give no. 1 spot to Avengement. The character, the fight scenes and brutality is just perfect.
@@richarddixon8365 I really, really liked Avengement.
@@Rossatron I decided to check out the trailer for Avengement and saw the movie after that on Netflix. HOLY FUCK!!! It was fucking amazing! Brutal and violent fight scenes! So satisfying to watch! 9/10
Avengement was a great crime drama
Best film, best actor, best soundtrack, best Pencil, best fight choreography and definitely the best action movie of all time.. 👍
Even his style makes him so much more appealing
I always have to watch these videos twice; once to hear you, second to truly grasp how insane the editing is
I've been reading John Kreng's book about how to film action and there is an interesting note he makes about how fight directors in China are stars just as big as the director and receive awards as well as fanbases of their own. With the John Wick series putting fight directors and stuntwork to this level in the west (even starting rumblings of stunt oscars), it makes me wonder if it hasnt started a revolution.
I could make a video essay on how good this one is. The editing, the breakdown, just breathtaking. 13:42 - 13:53 is probably the best part of the editing besides the beginning AMV. I had never noticed those symbolic wings or halos and you pointed it out without even talking about them specifically. This is just a really good video.
It's become the golden standard for how a action movie should be
What do I want in a "John Wick 4?"
Chow Yun-fat as either an ally or adversary. I need to see Chow going on a 9mm mook murder massacre again.
Without a doubt.... Need some more hard boiled action in my life.
Gimme some Chow Yun Fat.He could be the owner of Hong Kong Continental, for example.
@@miltontavares9506 I doubt an American action film is going to have a Hong Kong scene for a while now, with the current instability and riots.
@@stevenbobbybills Yeah i know and i hope things calm down in HK.
If they want any scene of Asian, Japan is properly the best choice. Not Hong Kong.
John Wick and Mission Impossible are these days, by far, the best action franchises on the market.

Please, we need to also tip our hats to Tyler Bates and his fantastic scores.
Your videos convinced me to watch John Wick and it’s now one of my favorite series of movies. Thank you so much.
I'll never forget the general mood to the first John Wick before it came out. "Oh, another lame awful movie by Keanu Reeves? The story is about a guy who kills people who killed his dog? Is this for real?"
Boy did this movie prove everyone wrong. Word of mouth spread about how good it was and to not expect it to get this far is an understatement. Glad I'm not the only one who loved the second John Wick of the trilogy. Most people I spoke to preferred the first JW the most.
John Wick is such a badass
my favorite action movie
@Vicious Savage Halle Berry: Am I a joke to you?
Don’t mind just liking every comment and also dope ass intro
You won't like this comment.
Above all, John is a character we're rooting for. We want him to survive, which means that we're caught up by the story. In a lot of films, the action is pointless and over the top, but the action in John WIck movies makes you root for John and hope for his survival.

Just wanna drop by to appreciate your god tier editing. Like jesus christ, that Enter the Dragon to Ruby Rose fight was simply flawless! Keep up the good work.
I'm a huge fan primarily because I believed in Keanu before the 1st film came out while the general perception of the film pre release made it an underdog. It's really satisfying to see this series succeed and grow
I still remember when I first entered a theater with all in mind that it's Keannu so I want to watch this. The movie theater wasn't in a blast, there's not much crowd out there watching, but gosh, we all witnessed greatness in there and began to spread the "word of mouth" for one of the best action franchise in History of Cinema.
Your translations as you said it are breathtaking.
Superb editing.
enjoying the Wick series hope 4 is the end tho cuz dude is getting old
I'll be personally happy if they end with Chapter 5 so long as it's a proper ending like the final chapter in a trilogy: a true conclusion. Ending on Part IV is just weird... my opinion.
As long as Hollywood takes care of him and he has the desire and energy to do it, I don't care that he's getting old. I'm not trying to project myself into him or something. Fuck this ageist noise. (I know you probably didn't mens it this way, but it comes off as it)
"John... is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer will."
Pretty much sums up the films really. It knows what core audience it's aiming for, it knows how to deliver a simple but gripping/ relatable narrative, it knows how to earn your respect.
Loads of action film writers/ directors just think that excessive egregious explosions makes for good action flick but that's just laziness and creative bankruptcy. John Wick's more grandeur spectacles of gunfu literally still has that intimate vibe to it; it's consistent and focused no matter how stylish/ grand the setpieces are.
Jason Bourne & Taken: *[Makes A Lot Of SHAKY CAMS/QUICK CUTS/FAST CUTS To Give The Audience SEIZURES]*
Asian Movies & Lionsgate John Wick: Omae Wa Mu Shindaeru!
Jason Bourne & Taken: NANI!?
Great video! Although you are right about the villains, I disagree with your stance on Chapter 3.
Everything you said about Chapter 2 is what I think about 3. I find myself returning to Parabellum more often than the first two, which can feel a little mopey and sluggish at times.
Parabellum's pacing and flow, (Particularly Act 1 and Act 3), felt more like it was inspired by The Raid 2, and that's one of my favourite action moves ever, so that may explain my bias.
I totally agree about the last one and the 2nd too but 1st is so good still
Winter by Vivaldi is my favorite song of all time, and the intro you edited with her in your video is one of the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, PERFECTION.
Ultrafer I’m gonna be that musician... it’s a 3-movement concerto, not a song. A song is a piece of music that is specifically meant to be sung.
@@Turt3752 I didn't know that, I'm brazilian, it was the Google Translator that put "Song".
A few seconds after 8:25, you did a great little edit between Enter the Dragon and John Wick. Good job on that one.
In JW4 I want to see John go back to as you said “An inevitable angel of death” him go back to being the hunter rather than the hunted.
That opening sequence was incredible. You're a real pro Rossatron!
The reason I loved John Wick was because it reminded me of John Woo's awesome films of the 1980s and 1990s.

Ali Baba I kinda want the series to end with the fourth one. What else is there for John to do after killing off the high table?
kelnhide
Yeah, plus the director said “not to expect a happy ending” if I recall correctly.
On the John Wick 2 commentary track Chad Stahelski says that the reflections of the soul exhibit and all of the numerous reflections throughout the film are meant to represent the duality of the two worlds John wick is a part. The normal world with his wife that he wants, and the assassin world that keeps pulling him back in.
Ah. Vivaldi's Winter. Never gets old.
best editing in the film critque universe by far

Actually love the hidden secret world aspect a whole lot more than the action.
Like others in the past..JOHN WICK CHANGED the Future Landscape of Hollywood Action Films😎👍👌👊
It's hard to pick a favorite they all have something I love.
I feel that with each movie my exclamation of the word “dayum” gets louder and louder with each passing moment in the theater
Thank you keeping making amazing content. I feel the best attribute is your sound voice which lends itself to the confidence and knowledge of action cinema.
The Matchcuts you included are breathtaking.
8:27 to 8:32 omg! The editing in this video is something else
Solid essay. The first remains my favourite. The third one the one I liked the least. It looks great from a technical aspect, but plotwise, there are way too many points that just don't make sense, even contradicting its own world building. Also, when it comes to the action scenes themselves, although each by itself is great, there's just way too many of them, each going on for way too long, left me exhausted watching it, and not in a good way, like when one watches a grand spectacle movie. I'll have to rewatch Vol. 2 one of these days.
Man every week i re watch one of john wick moives to keep my self calm like john wick because it give’s me the felling of calm and Focus
John Wick! Awesome!
Amazing video. The cuts are fantastic. Beautiful work.
The first one is an absolute masterpiece of action film. The second one is easily one of my favorite sequels ever (although I give the slight edge to the first). The third one once again is amazing but I do have to agree that it has trouble staying focused. It still has me hooked on John’s story going into Chapter 4 though.
Willem Landar I agree with all of that except I thought the action scenes to 3 were far better than 2, the dog fight scene and the fight in the knife shop are so memorable
Jordan Williams I agree. I think 3 has the best action and choreography. I still think the club scene in 1 is my favorite but 3 has the most engaging action overall.
top work Ross, interesting to learn more about the people behind these brilliant films
Some sublime editing here mates
would have been cool if franchises like terminator learnt from this
Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Bro your editing is fantastic!!
Fantastic analysis. Love watching your videos
That. Intro. Is. SICK! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It was by your first video about John Wick that I now know the series and I CANNOT thank you enough!
Never before have I fallen in love with a movie franchise as I have with John Wick. even after seeing all three movies about 6 or 7 times, I alwase get exited every time I start one of them up for another round. I hope this franchise wil grow to absolutely ridiculous proportions, because if you ask me, the assassins world of John Wick has endless potential and as long as the movie team keeps up this high standard, this franchise has a long, LONG future ahead!
And I'll be in the cinemas for every outing, jaw on the floor and completely
forgetting to eat the popcorn I bought.
Honestly dude. Your editing is brilliant. Sublime yet unmissable, I'm subscribing even tho this is the first video of yours I'm watching.
I like how he transitions from scene to scene. 👌🏼
Just wanted to say that I appreciate your scene transitions. That’s some great editing.
Incredible video, you nailed almost everything about this franchise in my opinion.
I can only think of one thing that you and I disagree on.
I think the 4th should be the last. They've set up the pieces on the board and we're heading to an all-out continental vs underworld war. The hope is that it will be the big payoff, everything will e tied off and the character will have done what he needed to do for both the story and for the audience.
The creative minds behind these movies have captured lightning in a bottle, the last thing I want to see is for it to become oversaturated or burnt out after movie after movie, sequel after sequel.
End on a high note and then get out while you still have the audience in awe.
Each installment just keeps getting better and better. Part 3 is awesome.
I’m gonna be honest, the John Wick franchise is easily my favourite movie franchise of all time. Each movie is a masterpiece.
My ranking is
1 John Wick 3
2 John Wick
3 John Wick 2
But they're all a 10/10 for me. Absolute masterpieces
Fantastic Breakdown, Great Editing. Love your work as always!
I will put it simple.
John Rambo: an over the top guy in a real world.
John MacLaine : a real guy in an over the top world.
John Matrix (Arnold in comando) : an over the top guy in an over the top world... with low budget.
John Wick: an over the top guy in an over the top world... with high budget.
Marathon time! I saw the second one on the deck of a cruise ship. It was awesome.
I am so happy you included a clip of Shadow towards the end. Such a fantastic action film, although completely different to the Wick movies.
The intro alone earned you a two thumbs up from me man. Good job. 👍👍

That hatchet throw from the third film is one of my favorite "scenes" in the movies lol
The background musics are also pretty awesome
Great video Great Script Great Editing Well Done
I LOVE Your Analysis, Rossatron. Stay Awesome!
The John Wick films, that team, are a big reason I'm excited by the idea of the Highlander reboot. The original was stylish with a great soundtrack, but lacked the world building.
These guys will give their Highlander a great style, a great soundtrack, and hopefully build a great, fascinating world with it.
Such a great video. This should be an extra in the Blu Ray.
Bravissimo on that opening sequence.
The greatest action series ever, and arguably a top 10 series all time
This is a very good analysis.
I really think JW3 was a missed opportunity. Should have deepened into Wicks past at the Academy. The fights are just meh because Wick is on a round trip, not trying to survive. The ending was very WTF doesn't make sense. An unpleasant surprise that would have been good if had hints about it from before. I am afraid that JW4 be more similar to 3 than to 2. Maybe JW had reached it's climax with JW2, opposite to Mission Impossible, reaching climax in 6, and awaiting for finale in 7 and 8.
I loved the usage of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for that ending gun shoot out in JW3.
As an Australian young man myself I loved the John Wick film franchise because it is so awesome, so badass, so entertaining, so fascinating, so intense and so wild & my favourite one was the first film. Poor John he was orphaned when he was a boy, he lost his childhood joy by being indoctrinated to be trained as a ruthless assassin plus hitman for different criminal organizations, he lost his beloved wife Helen to terminal illness, his first dog Daisy was killed, his friend Harry was killed, his friend Marcus was murdered, his cool vintage car wrecked, his beautiful house blown up, his continental hotel privileges lost, his continental allies turn against him, he lost his reputation, he lost his safety, he lost his ring-finger & he had to give up his deceased wife’s wedding ring to the Elder of the High Table, what is he going to lose next? absolutely depressing & painful. This poor tough man can’t even a catch a break. The only time he caught a break when he married his wife Helen for five years until she sadly passed away. He lost mostly everything positive in his life. Any normal human being around the world would have committed suicide if they experience those awful tragedies in their life. Like seriously his life is literally a never-ending nightmare absolutely devastating. Life is full of ongoing suffering like seriously it is so not fair that we humans have to experience that but I guess that is the price of being born alive in to this wicked world.
Your editing is great.
Great video, but I come back and just watch that opening montage sometimes
