I grew up on Dubai, I was probably about 10 or 11 when this came out. It was huge. Everyone saw it. Everyone had their own stories about who or what they saw being filmed. It stayed in cinemas for 3 or 4 months. It took probably about 2 weeks to film the Burj Khalifa climb bit. Pretty much every day you could see helicopters flying around and circling the building. As a kid it was really cool to just have that going on around you.

Another fun fact is the number A113 (which is a reference to the classroom used by graphic design and character animation students at Cal Arts) makes three appearances throughout the film.
The first is on the side of Hanaway's ring in the flashback sequence, the second is verbally as Ethan's agent ID that he recites through the phone after he escapes from the hospital and the third is on one of the gloves that Ethan uses to scale the building in Dubai.
During that scene, the line “Blue equals glue, red equals dead” was actually improvised on set by Simon Pegg who had apparently been binge-watching the Mission: Impossible revival series from the late 80s/early 90s and decided to rework a similar line of dialogue from the first episode of season 3 which involved a plot to unleash a genetic virus capable of destroying a nation's total wheat harvest.
This led to some members of the production team jokingly referring to the movie as Blue Harvest which coincidentally was also the working title of the 1977 film Star Wars.

The reveal that it was actually Hendricks in the hotel with them meant they lost that play. And I typed this out but nobody's gonna care anyway because Tom Cruise is still saving cinema.
Brad Bird did great with this one. Excellent balance of humor and action. Probably my second favorite next to Rogue Nation.

The color of Ethan's suit was grown from an African flower. The flower produced a unique shiny blue that Tom saw and insisted that it be used. My uncle and aunt went to a film festival in Dubai (my uncle worked in Hollywood) and they said it was the creepiest place they ever went to because everyone seemed a little too nice and phony and you get the impression you’re always being watched. But then they ran into Tony Shalub and his wife in the hotel restaurant, whom they had never met before, and Tony invited them to join him and his wife for breakfast because my uncle and aunt were the only other Americans there. So they had breakfast with Tony Shalub and his wife in Dubai. And this was like at the height of “Monk”, too. Tony Shalub is a very nice person apparently.
And then later, my uncle was talking with TJ Miller while Miller was working on the “Emoji” movie and Miller and his wife had just come back from Dubai and his wife was detained at the airport because she had drawn a mustache on the face of some guy on a magazine cover and I guess that guy was a government official or something. Nobody saw her do this and she kept the magazine so nobody saw it in the trash or something. But somehow they knew she did that to the face of a guy on a magazine that she still had in her possession and they questioned her for hours before finally releasing her and letting her go back to America. So they must have cameras everywhere in Dubai.

This might be my favorite, though Fallout is very good. I saw this on IMAX because they had an extended preview of Dark Knight Rises, and i’m glad i did. I don’t like heights to begin with, so that scene climbing the Burj Khalifa made my palms sweat - still does, if i’m being honest.

You didn't talk about how this was kind of the first film to really emphasize how Ethan Hunt is crazy. They leaned into how we see Tom Cruz as crazy driven to do all these incredible stunts and made that Ethans character arc with how maniacly driven he was to get to the point he could say "mission accomplished!"

  • @motherplayer

I think of all the films, this one still remains my favorite just because it is the one I feel did the concept of the IMF the best. As a team taking on impossible missions, here being to stop the breakout of nuclear war because a man feels the world will be stronger for it when they rise from the ashes of it. Ethan isn't completely running the show and that building sequence is still tense even after all these years.
