After this ban the stance of the judokas changed, before they were more on mid height stance, now they are more high. I also think they are more physical than technical now.
All of them throws and takedowns should be reinstated into the art. Im not a practitioner of Judo so I don't know if they are still taught in the art and just not allowed in competition.
Judo is not only a sport, so for the belts advancement there is a technical program to be studied and it encompasses all the Kodokan (the principal and first judo institution) established tecniques.
why not first round not allowing it and then the next round allow it? And see if the technique is overused because it's easier scoring a takedown or not.
As I see things developing today, in the future Judo will only hold throws for kindergarten. IT IS a MARTIAL ART, period, if you do not want to get hurt do gardenry, weavering or chess. Reducing it only to be a harmless sport is like prostituting its soul.
They would have done sports, competition and fairness a bigger favor by allowing another "drop" to point once you loaded up the opponent instead of a drop on the back. Those flips with the opponent on your shoulders look spectacular, but my guess was always that they fear that someone lands on the neck or otherwise badly and cause major injuries. Single and double leg shooting is an easy, fast and in now many sports used takedown - to ban that is hilarious.
As adicional context (and so wrestling braindeads can know about It), wrestling was being dropped as a PERMANENT sport in the olympic games. The discusión was made around the same time the leg grabs were banned. That being said, its possible that we dont see wrestling in the 2028 olympics. I only recently got aware of the tournament aspects and its rules of judo. I simply never cared about it, assuming it would be something realistic. Then, a few days back I watched a judo tournament for the first time and I could not follow any decisions made. I did not get why someone got penalties, I did not get why someone scored... How can this be more spectator friendly? There was also nearly no ground fighting. Which - contrary to some BJJ fanboys - is a big part of judo as a sport. So maybe - to make it truly spectator friendly they should drop all that point awarding nonsense and have submission matches instead. My humble opinion on the matter.
As most agree Judo got ruined by these cowardly and/or greedy for cash (entertainment over practicality) ideas and the martial arts cut from judo was so useful it became one of the most successful martial arts in the modern era Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… it seems bjj will eventually go full circle combing wrestling judo Sambo and ne waza to become good judo again ( that’s at least in adcc where takedowns matter more)

I guess Japan had a lot of influence in this decision maybe because they wanted to stay in the game and not to get defeated miserably in their own game.
Best throw at 2:05 mark. Amazing!! Second best at 5:46 mark!
To be fair, especially the first Kata Guruma looks pretty dangerous to me.
However, they could've just changed it so that youre no longer allowed to stand up when the opponent is on your shoulders. This way we still had the throw, but a bit less dangerous
It wasn’t a safety issue. It was done to make judo more aesthetically pleasing.
Stop being lazy until my grandma falls out of that kata guruma and walks away
@@NickKano11 a fireman carry can look awesome af, IJF rule makers are is clowns.
Also, who cares if a throw or takedown looks "boring"? If it is effective, it must remain.
I hate IJF
Getting punched in the head in boxing is dangerous, getting kicked in the liver in kickboxing is dangerous, martial arts are dangerous pursuits as they are the practical application of violence. Remove all the danger and all you left is a game.
I agree that they shouldn't be doing the front flip finish to kata guruma.
That's also being done because the rules for ippon are janky.
But OF COURSE you should be able to stand up from there! That's the whole idea!
Awesome. I hope the IJF brings back leg grabbing throws.
My BJJ coach is one of many who decided to quit Judo after they started banning stuff.
Judo was invented by banning stuff from jujutsu
Да , мы так и рубились в своё время
with the music of Killer Instinct 😍, what a fantastic video
Judo was closer to wrestling until this rule change. Most, if not all of these throws can be modified to lift the lower body by grabbing the back of the belt which is totally legal.
IJF could make two types of judo, with and without leg grab. Something like freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling.
At least we have SAMBO.
Sambo should be more popular.
Unfortunately, you're not allowed to choke in Sambo. Only limb submissions.
Sambo banned these long before judo
@@TB-fm8kf no it didn't. Double and single leg takedowns are 1st lessons in SAMBO class
@@veljkogrujic1980 check out the sambo rule set.
Oh God the creativity with leg grabs is incredible
Someone told me a joke long time ago, the martial art will be more powerful after it becomes a "sport". I think Judo probably initiated this joke and added a good punch line to finish this joke
Spectator friendly? These were great throws, fun to watch!
These techniques are my things before IJF banned those. I love all this because it is more effective for me to do the take down.
And now IJF try to bring all these back into the menu. Gotta taught my kids about all of these.
Leg grabs are coming back!
In theory these techniques are still useful and perfectly legal in BJJ. The problem is BJJ practitioners’ underdeveloped standing game as a result of the pointing system which rewards takedowns poorly and strongly groundwork-oriented mentality.
Now you see real Judo. Not not the fake imposter of today.
the "fake imposter of today" is closer to classic judo then the entire video
Being 6”3 and fighting
Our Judoka Ancestors are turning over in there graves .. These traditional banned of judo throws in competition not only destroying your fighting spirit but it is disgraceful!
I started back in 2008 and my go to throw was kata gurma...and then 2010 happened ...with hard work and determination and major adjustments I eventually earned my black belt but it was a tough journey .The move to ban leg grabs was just a move to keep Japan still relevant on the podium,in my opinion, had things remained the same i believe that many up coming nations would have produced great fighters on an even playing field and eventually Japan would have just been known as the birth place of judo with other countries taking top spots in the sport .
Why? Please elaborate.
@@n4_ku hey what you would like me to elaborate on .
@@jsieunarine How other countries would take the top spot in Judo? Is Japan weak at lag grabbing?
@@n4_ku it's not that Thier weak at leg grabs but other countries would fair a good chance ,it's like when it comes to wrestling what countries are the top gold medals in the Olympics.
"Changing rule to keep Japan win" is the most stupid explanation to the rule change I have ever heard. The whole reason just doesn't make sense at all. Even at 2012 Olympic where Japan did not perform well, they still won a couple of silver and bronze. And their loss was not due to leg grab. So how was leg grab ban help Japanese? Especially when Japanese were in fact quite good at leg grabbing...
This banned of those also makes it alot easier for less experience judokas too get medals against a more experience competitor...
the killier instinct sountrack is dope
Judo has also other restrictions...i think it's a reason why some guys go to sambo now.
Sambo partially banned leg grappling before judo.
thats one of the reason the legless kata guruma was popular in europe, which now benefits judo
Anyone got the name of the first song that played? That shit was nice
Judo is a martial art, not a sport. What happens on the tatami should be street effective. You reduce Judo's self defense capability by removing technique from shiai. Boycott the IJF.
Next up, “banned Judo techniques… on concrete.”
The dimelo from Josh Resnick at 8:18 never gets old.
That was the real judo, the one I started in as a kid of 10 and retired before it got neutered and watered down.
I was a kid when they decided to change the rules. I remember that all tournaments at this time on low-mid lvl was dominated by tai-otoshi and - morote-gari. That throw was really stupid and, honestly, i aint miss it.
I am wondering if there is an alternative international organization which offers old style judo tournaments?
Closest thing you could get is probably this: ua-cam.com/video/4-SvasNrCxo/v-deo.html
This style of grappling was probably founded on the idea to make Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more entertaining by discouraging guard pulling and incentivizes players to be more explosive.
actually, this is closer to real old judo
There's some news I read, they are bringing it back in on 2025
I was away from Judo for years and when I came back to it I found out that my best throws were banned (as well as some of the most effective self defence moves) So I started with Jujitsu.
Some love this decision, some hate it. I hate it.
Someone must of complained that was not fair.
IJF started to band techniques. 😂
Banning leg attacks heavily advantages tall slim athletes from the more marketable areas of Europe and Asia while discriminating against shorter more powerful Soviet Bloc athlete and Mongolians
Mongolians and Eastern Bloc guys still do super well lol, wtf.
@@MatthewNguyen-zx3de yes they do and they would be DOMINATE if they were still allowed to grab legs... that's precisely what the ijf was worried about especially considering the fact that wrestling was on The Chopping Block leaving those people "unemployed"
Once wrestling got dropped from the Olympics Judah would have been flooded with wrestlers who would snatch the legs out from underneath the more marketable athletes
@@Howleebra That is too much baseless speculation. If wrestlers could dominate Judoka, they would have been doing it a while ago- with or without leg grab bans.
This shit actually tells me you have no experience in jacket wrestling. In all jacket wrestling cultures, leg grabs are not a common threat because being able to control jackets heavily nullifies the duck unders and level changes required for leg grabbing.
And even then, its very hard to score ippon or even waza-ari with leg grabs- that's why they were mostly used for shitty koka Judo in a time when ne-waza was broken too fast.
@@MatthewNguyen-zx3de I've been doing Judo since 1983 and it was way better with leg grabs and minor scores.
Wrestlers would prefer to wrestle that's why they're wrestlers but if you take that away from them they'll turn to Judo and use wrestling tactics... the ijf and ioc was terrified of that.
Anybody that's been doing Judo for more than a few years knows that
just accept that this is judo, not freestyle wrestling. Sambo banned those moves way before, so no, soviet bloc had mo advan. back then
After this ban the stance of the judokas changed, before they were more on mid height stance, now they are more high. I also think they are more physical than technical now.
Knew I recognized these songs! 🎸
who is here after the IJF change?
Одни запреты и красота дзюдо только страдает
All of them throws and takedowns should be reinstated into the art. Im not a practitioner of Judo so I don't know if they are still taught in the art and just not allowed in competition.
Judo is not only a sport, so for the belts advancement there is a technical program to be studied and it encompasses all the Kodokan (the principal and first judo institution) established tecniques.
Killer insinct theme rocks!
Does anyone know what competition the technique at 3:02 was from?
In Ufc can someone athlete use this banned throws?
Yes of course
I'm just saying, cinder, eyedol, fulgore, glacius and spinal approve this video. Especially the somersault kata guruma.
Neil Adams has to take some responsibility as well. He was apparently on the committee, or some such bs
It's crazy to me these takedowns are banned..
There goes half the discipline 😂
why not first round not allowing it and then the next round allow it? And see if the technique is overused because it's easier scoring a takedown or not.
Coming back🙄
As I see things developing today, in the future Judo will only hold throws for kindergarten.
Sensei Kano most be rolling on his tomb
No, his Judo had wayyyyy less Leg graps then used by judokas prior to 2010.
Single leg and double leg takedowns should be brought back to Judo.
I believe cuz it's a sport, the leg throw can be very dangerous should the head is spear down. But looks very impressive, I like it a lot.
Martial arts should create their own Olympics damn. This is the judo my uncle competed in
Next they'll only allow o soto gari. Bring all those leg grabbing back.
As adicional context (and so wrestling braindeads can know about It), wrestling was being dropped as a PERMANENT sport in the olympic games. The discusión was made around the same time the leg grabs were banned.
That being said, its possible that we dont see wrestling in the 2028 olympics. Amplíe time to adapt was given until the new generation continued their olympic career.
The olympics need judo not the other way around... You cant adapt the whole sport only to stay in the olympics - at some point its not the same sport anymore 🤷
Man, it was way more fun.
And way more injuries...I loved leg grabs, but I have to recognize training was harder, like a fight to survive every freaking lesson

actually no
All the stupid rule changes are the reason I gave up judo many years ago as a 2nd dan. It's now no longer so exciting and to me, is quite boring to watch nowadays.

Does anyone have any idea what the rules are for leg grabs in sumo?
Bring them back.
no, this is judo not freestyle wrestling
I believe it was to screw us up Cubans. The Cuban judo school took a lot from wrestling. They trained in contiguous areas in Cerro Pelado.
This is the Killer Instinct beat. I know because I lived through this time period.
As most agree Judo got ruined by these cowardly and/or greedy for cash (entertainment over practicality) ideas and the martial arts cut from judo was so useful it became one of the most successful martial arts in the modern era Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… it seems bjj will eventually go full circle combing wrestling judo Sambo and ne waza to become good judo again ( that’s at least in adcc where takedowns matter more)
The first throw looks like a pro wrestling version of a fireman throw. LOL 😅
I also saw a Rock bottom.
@Paul-nj5xh bs. the leg ban brought judo closer to Kano's original style
