This dude is a killing machine. I was watching his interview as he was arriving in Guadeloupe 2 days after the Olympics.
The journalist asked him what's next? He said I am on holiday forba month then I ll get back to train. Train for what? asked the journalist .
    His answer was LA 2028

I mean not that long ago I saw him for what he still was: a very young man. I even remember when he was interviewed about him still being in highschool and stuff. A street and a gymnasium in my neighbourhood are named after him. He legits deserves the legend status, but everybody knows that already.

I like reading the comments of haters or losers stuck in amateur judo who say that he is just big and strong but in this case why does no country in the world line up a guy of his weight and height with the same technique for all these years?
Strange that there is only one guy like him who is so strong and his weight and size are absolutely nothing rare in the world of Judo. In short, stop your excuses with your "he's just big and strong".
Bunch of loser who can handle than this guy is the goat of history in Judo period.

Now, yes. But Neil Adams was right before when he accused him, like others, not to have played the right game:
"Win with ippon or lose with ippon but make an ippon."
All his finals in Paris now corrected this understandable impression that he played the normal boring game which began with Hitoshi Saito, interrupted by Keijji Suzuki. What did even Satoshi Ishii? They rarely tried serious attacks, they went over the tatami, they destroyed the grip of the opponents and when they were heavy enough, like Hitoshi Saito they pushed the opponent to the end of the tatami until he had to leave it. At the end they knew about the champion bonus and won by decision or by penalties. The Japanese punished Teddy therefore when they added the open class, as in the past, (even if they declared this another championship) in the weight class programme of the world championships in Tokyo 2010. He lost in the final against a fat second class Japanese by decision. They ignored his champion bonus which is similar to that of Muhammad Ali. But also Ali convinced the world of spectators when he knocked Foreman out (ko in "Rumble in the Jungle".
By the way the Japanese were angry about Teddy devaluing the All Japan open, which was considered stronger than the world championships and Olympic Games for the Japanese when he smoked not only the Japanese elites in a real "All world" open in 2008 (Satoshi was already away with his olympic gold medal without ever meeting Teddy). He destroyed the Japanese judo might after Anton Geesink and Wim Ruska, who had even to win both gold medals (heavy and open) in München at the Olympics 1972. In the meantime Yoshiro Yamashita polished the Japanese reputation not just because of his higher bodyweight (Yamashita made of course profit from his champion bonus against his younger and heavier successor Hitoshi Saito).

    The GOAT!

He is a tall model athlete with a respectable upper body and arms. However to be tall has advantages and disadvantages. His body is also show. A lot of black athletes like this.
He has less problems with fighters between 90 kg and 115 kg. However he has problems with technical strong athletes that are smaller but heavier. Hitoshi Saito had a stronger lower body and this is important in judo and weightlifting as well.
The taller guys must fight more with long legs. They have a higher point of gravity. They must try to break the balance in around the vertical axis or break in the back direction. The smaller heavier guys have a low point of gravity. So they are difficult to lift. And they try to go under the gravity point of the tall guys and break the balance around the horizontal axis.
The lighter guys normally have more endurance and they can change the position very fast. The heavy guys fight more static and then explosively the lighter guys are more dynamic in their general movements.
If Riner were as fat as Yoshiro Yamashita or Hitoshi Saito he should weigh 160 to 175 kg. I don't think that he could fight with a body like Tatsuro Saito. He would weigh 180 to 190 kg.
Tatsuro Saito won the All Japan Open weight. So he must be good. However he lost against much smaller but strong guys when they took him over the time. I think he is finished after 3 minutes if he doesn't reach a point. He seemed unconscious when he lost. The really heavy guys must save force during the fight. In boxing this is fairly impossible. However in boxing long arms are an advantage to save force and damage.

Bob Sapp was pulled and pushed to the K1 final. Then he even lost against Pudianowski, a strongman who was a not remarkable boxer. He made his most money with fights against the Sumo Yokozuma Akebono.

I want to say something else.
Judo is comparable with amateur boxing. I don't want to say that the Cuban boxers are not "professional" - they never worked besides in the ring or the gymn. However Teolphilo Steveson (RIP) or Felix Savon (there were some more in lighter weight classes, I don't remember the names) never turned to professional boxing, which is not the same.
In Grappling or MMA it is the same and. Pro Wrestling is not comparable. The World Champion in Wrestling Wilfried Dietrich (RIP) extremely strong (maybe under steroids like yhe Sowjets) said that he didn't see any inrichment for himself in this sport.
Just read the stories of Willem Ruska's wife (Wim Ruska RIP). Anton Geesink (RIP) - 10th Dan (not Kodokan) - took part in such a sh .t. Wim Ruska traeined with "Hulk Hogan" in Miami before his methamorphis. Wim Ruska however wanted to challenge André the Giant.

In fact, the only one he's had a quarrel with is known to have quite bad attitude. He even hurled insults at Teddy. Terry didn't respond to his provocations and left it at that.
Otherwise, Teddy has always had immense respect for Japanese judokas.
Moreover, even if France won against Japan in team judo (a Japanese sport), the Japanese won against the French in fencing (a French sport).
What I mean is that it's no disgrace to lose to another country in a sport invented by your own nation. It's happened to every country in the world, and it's likely to happen again and again.
To conclude, Japan was the 3rd best nation at the Olympics, ahead of Australia and France. You can be proud of your nation and your athletes, they did a fantastic performance.

And he beat all his lighter European judo legends after one or two minutes. He seemed not to show any fear or preoccupation to lose. (At least for the spectators - a pure Japanese). Judo means "Gentle way". In French, Judo means "voie de la souplesse", which can be translated as "way of flexibility". Choose which traduction you like the most.
Anyway, this is not Judo. This is pure strenght, and limited technique. The sixth first movements shown here are the same. And again later in the video.
Yes, as a matter of fact, Teddy Riner is the best competitor. But the best Judoka? No.
By the way, in modern Judo tournaments, so many Ippons are not true Ippons. But of course, with some rules modifications, like the suppression of "Yuko", at some point, any projection will allow any Tori to score an Ippon.
See the 4th Ippon here. Riner is so strong is he almost turning too much on himself, and his Uke only hits the tatami with the side of his shoulder. Not at least half of the back, as any Ippon should be. As he was also trying to project Riner, Yusupov even thought that he might have scored himself.
The 7th one is funny too. For once Riner changed his technique, for something quite simple and useful, some kind of Hiza-Guruma. But you can see Simionescu falling on his left knee and rowling on his thigh, then on his butt. And finally, rotate so much he touched the tatami with his right shoulder. In what world this can be an Ippon? No speed, no strenght, not half of the back on the tatami. (Yeah, there are four criteria to fulfill in the same time to score an Ippon... Control, Speed, Strenght, and hit the tatami with at least half of the back.) In this case, it worth a "Koka" if it still existed. Nothing more.
The 10th one is also quite funny... Saito is litteraly diving on the tatami, and protects himself with his left arm. If the side of his shoulder hits the tatami, it's only because of the inertia of Riner falling too. No point should ever been scored on this one... Why "Waza-ari"? Where is the intention of Riner to make Saito fall? Where is his control? Where is his speed? And the Strenght? Not a single criteria to score an Ippon is respected. The only logical decision the referee might have taken would have, maybe, to give a small penalty to Saito.
By deleting some old points, Judo competition lost lots of nuances. And it seems referees are quite prompt to give "Ippons" when they decide, and for which competitor they want.
In the last Olympics, there were lots of strange decisions made by referees. I heard lots of competitors telling they were bored of this kind of "Judo", and this kind of competition, which is unfair.
All that said... Does it lessen the performances of Riner? I don't think so. Like I told before, he is the best competitor, with the current rules of Judo. Nothing forbid to use the same movement in competition, ever, and ever. And obviously, his opponents are almost all never able to beat him.
If you want to see what Judo should look like, even with the current rules, which implies more strenght than flexibily... Watch videos of Shohei Ono. His technique is way more impressive than the technique of Riner. (And yes Ono also scored a few times very strange Ippons.)

In Japan they respect him a lot for his technics and mental, he's a legend, you can't win in Judo without self-control and be a good technician, people judge him a lot for his size but can be a disadvantage in Judo if the opposant have a better technic, Teddy doesn't win just because his body.
