- Lamborghini has turned out to be everything Ferruccio didn't want it to be - and thank heavens. What started out as the Ultimate Grudge Match against Enzo Ferrari created some of the most outrageous cars ever made.

This episode covers the history of Lamborghini - from Ferruccio's infamous clash with Enzo Ferrari over a slipping clutch, through the Miura, Coutach, LM002, Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador - and the lesser-known models like the Urraco and the front-engined Islero, Jarama, Espada, et al.
Oh, and the Lamborghini Urus.
And of course, we discuss the now-late, great designer, Marcello Gandini - who designed so many of Lamborghini's most beautiful cars.
Learn everything about the history of the world's most outrageous car company - here. With laughs, smiles, and too much caffeine.
Tip of the hat to Marcello Gandini… RIP!
Jason is the Lamborghini of automotive journalism
I must have missed when he was bought and abandoned by a Indonesian business conglomerate.
An ongoing threat to spontaneously catch fire?
@@jimiverson3085only in his early years
Derek was right about the V12 mid engined Lamborghinis having the transmission in the front. The new Revuelto is the first one with the transmission in the back.
The gearbox is transverse too. Like the the McLaren f1
Derek was on fire this episode. I rarely laugh out loud at anything, but while actively cleaning an OR I was caught off guard several times and had nurse come see if I was okay. Peak.
The ending was hilarious just to hear, obviously not to act upon any grudges... Stay chill my friends. And yes please make a 3hr + Piech episode or 3+ separately or whatever it takes. Me want all the details, no short cuts please. They can be rolled out in stages to draw it out if necessary to keep us all in suspense. High bar of expectations, no pressure, as when u do ur craft, the results speak for themselves. Thank you and enjoy you efforts Gentlemen.
Or at least 3 piechisode carmudgeon shows even if we get just 1 Icons Piechisode
jack is having a lot of fun with his edits
I actually thought you were going to get through one episode without mentioning Bruno Sacco😂
I can't be the only one to think that if you reached out to the Porsche museum or VW they'd throw some marketing $ and cars at you to make the Piechisode as long as you want. It's a celebration of of those brands through that man. Can't hurt to ask. If it's a Hagerty problem, not letting you, fair, you know your business better than I do. Just really want the 3+ hour documentary version. And / or lots of reference material linked in the description so I can go read more.
There may be some diesel-shaped thing that they’d rather forget about - a direct consequence of the culture the man cultivated. Even if VW would consider it, I don’t think Jason would be fully comfortable that the sponsorship doesn’t have editorial impact. The most I can see is the museums bringing some cars for the shoot.
Viewer takes sip of beverage just in time for the Madeline Kahn reference and nearly dies...
One of the most iconic and productive grudge matches is the VW/ Porsche family grudge match... And each trying to buy each other out ... Which ironically now includes Lamborghini in the family..
This episode will be stellar in the side-impact tests, reinforced by all those side bars. 😄
Iain Tyrrell of Tyrrel's classic workshop actually has had Ferruccio's Ferrari in his shop and test fitted several Lamborghini tractor clutches. Together with Olivier Nameche they put all the pieces together and proved that story to be 100% plausible/possible.
Jake's edits fucking kill me. Gold
I'm truly surprised that this show doesn't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. You guys have fantastic chemistry, an incredibly wide range of automotive history, experience, and knowledge, and are able to riff endlessly and seemingly effortlessly. Your tangential offshoots are very entertaining, as are the edits. The cherry on top is your ethos as to what makes a good driving experience (hint: it ain't the gizmos!). As has been said many times before, thanks for the weekly entertainment drop of this show, as well as the other haggerty videos with which you guys are involved. Looking forward to the long form streaming season of the Piechasodes!
Was the Diablo the last time Chrysler said "this isn't good enough"? How bad was the interior before they got it?
"Nobody knows who Madeline Kahn is" I was just talking about her Emperor Nymph scene in History of the World Part 1: "BOB! Oh bob, do I have any openings that this man might fit?"
On the topic of front-engine to mid-engine conversion, when building the 5 Turbo, Renault DID turn the engine and transmission around because the first gen Renault 5 had transmission first, then engine; similar to Citroen Traction Avant, DS, SM, Saab 900 etc.
Lotus also did the same trick when they were transplanting Renault 16 drivetrain to their first gen Europa.
Love love LOVE me some new Carmudgeon to start the working week. Thanks Jason and Hyphen 😊
Thanks to Derek, antediluvian is my new favourite word and I'm happy to see it used twice in a row.
I can't believe that DTS actually got something wrong... (!??) Touring did NOT design the 350 GT - the brilliant Franco Scaglioni designed the gorgeous, original 350 GTV, and Touring Fucked It Up(!), resulting in the slightly awkward final product. btw, You guys NEED to do an entire show on my man Franco S. - the most under-appreciated of the truly great designers of his generation. Perhaps in conjunction with a commemorative episode for Marcello Gandini's passing?
My favorite Lamborghinis include the Urraco, Bravo, and Islero. Good show!
during the Mimran ownership of Lamborghini Patricks brother Jean Claude i guess with no 2+2 option from lamborghini ,bought a 1985 V8 Vantage in dover white from a dealer in Monaco.. i later bought this car in geneve which had been colour changed to Cumberland grey and had been later owned by Yannick Noah the french tennis player and singer.
Single topic episodes like this are my favourite. Love the deep dives, it reminds me of the early episodes
Give the people what they want! I want to say we have been waiting for piëch-epsiode for at least 50 episodes? I think it was around episode 90 when the piëch-episode was eluded to.
Damnit Jason, giggling at that comment at 49:03 just sent me 😂.
This was a great episode, on one of the best brand histories out there...cheers guys.
I would pay for a 3 hour long Piechisode
Is that infinity logos on a tesla toy car next to Derrick or am I crazy? 18:11
59:19 I love vengeful Jason and Derek, especially how much Derek wanted to know that the act of revenge was from him
54:10 Hey! At least the G wagon was and is built at the same place since it's beginning! (the only ones not built in Graz were the few license produced ones with a Peugeot engine for the french army)
Sorry, but i am from the area where it's built, and it's a bit of a local "national treasure" here. (even though almost no one here can afford to buy one that's not at least 7-10 years old.)
Edit: For Mr Camisas suggestion: there's a part of a german song lyric where a guy shat into a paper bag, placed in front of the "bad person" door (knowing they were at home) lit it on fire and rang the doorbell. The person then found the burning pile of sh... and how do you put that out? you stamp it out....
So to sum up… Lamborghini started out wanting to make practical GT street Cruisers, customers bought the radical stuff….Lamborghini wants to make outlandish over the top performance cars, customers buy the SUV….
The market knows what the market wants more than the individual running the company wants the market to be…. For good or bad
Someone please. PLEASE. Take that "I don't know fuck about shit" loop and put some heavy EDM drop right after it
30:20 😂 my favorite movie of all time! Have it on DVD, & watched it 9 times in a row when I had Covid. ❤
I think youtube deleted my comment so I'll take out the link....
Jason search for this:
California dreamin’ of the Cizeta V16T | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop
..and Hyphens off-camera "huh" at 43:04 KILLED me. I can't stop laughing.
Thanks guys.
There's some shop in Cali that has a number Cizeta V16's, I bet you could get all the info you needed on the car there! I'm afraid I don't remember the name...
I’m kinda disappointed Jason wasn’t drinking a Lamborghini energy drink lol
Why did you guys skip over the Espada and Jalpa?
Today we learned Derek and Jason are both not ADHD.
Should get bobby broccoli to do animation for an all voice over Piech’isode
That coffee made Jason go 2x speed lol
I've driven 5 different Murcielagos and they all drove different. The one that drove the best had been crashed and rebuilt!
That grudge match discussion 😂😂😂
If Jason does 2-3 hours of icons I would so very happily watch
Should have mentioned that Lamborghini was a British POW working as a mechanic fixing Allied vehicles, His first tractors will built using surplus British army Morris truck engines.
I guessing he would have got them for very little money and knowing British soldiers he may have secured the engines with a few bottles of wine.
It seems like all of the best Supercars are just a similar story of “I can fix him” lol
I would absolutely watch a two part Piechisode if that counts for anything :)
Isn't Lucid a bunch of Tesla engineers who took off to build a better electric? Another excellent grudge match that I'd love to see topple Tesla with... ah, if only people could actually appreciate dynamics more than gimmicks.
Jake has been an amazing addition. @5:38 had me dying.
one of the funniest and longest intros (: LOL
Swear to god, i'm beating down your door if you trim down the piechasode. I would watch a four hour video on him. i would watch a full TV season of episodes on him. the people who have been waiting have been waiting far too long for you to leave anything out
Yeah but like didn't Ferruccio pose with like two girls in each arm when the MIura was getting introduced?
In Greece we'd consider him the sort of guy who'd frequent skyladika and be the sort of chap who'd park his tinted Mercedes outside of nightclubs. Not classy.
If I recall, he had a Ferrari or a sports car for every day of the week or so the legend goes... again, not someone subtle who really wanted to make Aston Martins.
He certainly sounds like whoever has ran Aston for the last decades, anyone with a big ego if the stories I've heard from journos are to be believed or the embarassement of the Stroll stuff in F1. If anything would make me sneer more at a modern Aston is remembering that because at least in the 00s they made the cars we always thought they made.
Knowing Ferruccio bought a Countach and he almost couldn't afford it I think by the 80s? I dunno. I don't think he'd be that embarrassed by the Lambos of today with that in mind
There's a video of his very car on Tyrrell's Classic Workshop channel and he also debunked the 250 having the same clutch as his tractor a bit.
The guy was a show off, not that there's anything wrong with that. That's kind of why I like the Urus despite it being a warmed over Q7/RSQ8, beats the hell out of the grey boxes that come out with a bit of spice. Will agree though, they cater too much for the fast money demographic considering who actually buys the Urus...
You either have to be Briatore or an influencer to have one. I still like em.
I am sure you can crowdfund the Piech episode... .put it up on Crowdfunding!
No mention of the wonderfully wacky Espada?!
Classic cuts at the start, I don’t know … about ….
Great editing
I can bet most Urus buyers don't even know it has a V8
I'll bet half of them pronounce it "Uranus".
Audi package on the middle of the car you got Lamborghini package
Just saw Derrick's dark side, loving it haha
Furla is funnily enough an Italian luxury handbag company.
For a second I thought the Madeline Kahn reference was going to be for her "flames..." monologue from Clue.
Geeze, Jason doesn't know about the 250 Short Wheelbase Berlinetta?
Lili Von Shtupp!😂
"Match" sounds about right for Lamborghini.
Ironically, the best selling Lamborghini of all time is a 4-door GT on stilts: The Urus.
omg, cizeta on revelations. there is so little quality video on that car, tnx camissa.
The Cizeta-Moroder V16T quad headlights gives me nightmares
🇮🇹 Questo episodio è un capolavoro assolutamente fantastico
🇩🇪 Das ist gut
Now you need to get Blazing Saddles in to a episode.
You guys are so fucking great!
🎉Monday. Yeah🤗
Could you at some point do an episode as to why the frontend designs of cars nowadays are so ugly? From the BRZs, to the BMWs, to the current Audis, etc.
Derek "No Compromise" Hyphen Scott
Why is there a Tesla Model S with a Infiniti logo on the table?
LOL! Excellent finish! 😃😃😃
I am really wondering how much of Lamborghini (in 2024) is actually Italian made? What percent of the engineers are Italian vs Germans? Or all the actual chassis, Suspension, drivetrain and engine engineering done by Germans from Ingolstadt and Stuttgart?
Pleassse a DTS of a 350GT! 😍
I feel sorry for the those that only listen to the podcast. Lol
762 cars . Some were counted more than once,,,,,,wait..🎉what ?
If you have 762 vin numbers and so e cars had same vin numbers.
It doesn't make sense. There would have to be more cars
I would love to drive a Ferla 12000.
❤
RIP Marcello Gandini
Great episode. Jason: "That's what capitalism is actually about." 😂 Derrik: "I hope they're dead." 😂
NOOOOO! Jason! Don't drink Starbucks! The unhinged TikTok crowd will come for you!
Early crew
Hi
Hello
26:25 Just fire the video editor already, it was better before them
I do not get the hate for Urus. European cars that I have seen are all extremely well finished. Might be spec dependant or vary around different markets. To me Cayenne GT was not as good to drive as an Urus. If looking for a daily driver that does everything Urus seems like a perfect solution with Audi quality, Porsche dynamics and Lamborghini design. High residual values mean that it is cheaper to own than Cayenne, X5 M and other high performance SUVs.
The Urus is a really weird product from the Twilight Zone. On one hand it is - like you said - a well built car that is good to drive (I hear, I don't have a chance to drive one), while being a lucrative product for its manufacturer.
On the other hand, for car enthusiasts, the badge on the hood does not and should not be associated with a SUV or anything else so practical, or be a re-styled car from another manufacturer. Lamborghinis are supposed to be crazy and wild and light your heart on fire. Their speed and wild designs are so alluring that you're willing to overlook the impracticality. It doesn't even matter, a Lamborghini is (supposedly) supposed to be so desirable that it makes you lose all faculty of your common sense.
This is obviously a purely emotional stance. Who knows where Lamborghini would even be as a business if it weren't for the Urus. But even I can't help but feel I'd like the Urus a lot better (as an idea) if it was styled something more like the LM002, or if the Estoque had happened instead.
@@DJ_SayWhaaaat Estoque would have been more suitable for Lamborghini but would have been seen as a posh Panamera. LM002 inspired Urus might have been cooler but would have cost much much more. What could have been, can be seen as a Ferrari Purosangue - it has V12, pure Ferrari platform but costs twice as much and is really unreliable as tests and first cars have shown.
I keep trying these but Derek’s up turned nose attitude and whiney voice makes it a tough listen.
