I wanted all of the old games on my SNES classic and by watching your videos I now have them. You make the easiest tutorials to follow, if someone watches the video and it doesn't work they screwed up somewhere.
Right now you are the only person I will watch for modding. If it's not on your channel I don't try it. Quality content.

Thanks for these awesome videos! You have really helped me understand so much, and really get into classic modding. What a great hobby!
I have been going back and forth between this vid, and some others, as well as taking in advice from lots of comments, and I found the below method to be the simplest. Every video I found seemed to take for granted that the viewer would just know about a couple of steps, such as the need for plugging in the console and switching back and forth between firmwares as you add the HSQS and NAND apps. This method is for Hackchi2 CE 3.5.3, so it may be just a bit different that yours, but it worked for me!
SNES Dualboot Directions (This also works in reverse. If you’re modding an NES Classic and adding an SNES HSQS, do the exact same steps, realizing that it is a mirrored process)
    1) Load all SNES and NES games that you want to hackchi with all box art.
    2) Go to View>Sort By and click System
    3) Go to View> Original Games> click At The Top
    4) Go to Settings and check Separate Games For Multiboot
    5) While running SNES firmware, add the NES HSQS file as a game (You can find these easily online. name it what you want). It should be under SquashFS under Game selection.
    6) Load box art of an NES CLASSIC for NES file you just loaded into SNES
    7) Make sure all SNES games and the NES HSQS file are checked under Game Selection
    8) Plug in SNES Classic and boot it up. Synch selected games.
    9) Go to Tools and click Switch Running Firmware to NES System (this is the HSQS file, not the NAND. It is the program for an NES.
    10) Your system is now reading as and NES
    11) Go to File > Add Custom App. Give the app a name like SNES Classic. This is the folder that when you boot up for system as an NES, it will give you something to click that will reboot your system and take it back to SNES mode.
    12) Once this is created, paste this under command line: /bin/hsqs nand
    13) Once you do this, that file should now be listed in Game selection beneath /bin/hsqs
    14) Add box art for this for an SNES class system. Make sure that this is checked, and all NES games are checked, That all SNES games are UNCHECKED, and importantly, that the NES Classic file (the HSQS you added earlier) is UNCHECKED.
    15) Click Synch Selected Games.
You have now added to your SNES classic:
    -New SNES games
-an app that when you click is as you run your SNES, will reboot your system as an NES Classic (There will be an original games folder and an Added Games folder. You will find the NES App under Added Games).
When you do this, as you navigate through the games of your NES Classic, you will find under that line up of games that you have an SNES App that when clicked reboots your system as your original SNES (Again, there will be an original games folder and an Added Games folder. You will find the SNES App under Added Games).
You can now go back and forth between playing both systems on your console!

Any idea where to go from here? I followed your tutorial and I can go from the SNES to the NES. However, When I try to use the custom app to go back to the SNES I just get a black screen and nothing happens. There is an input because my monitor is still receiving a signal. 2.if i set up retroarch on snes and do a hsqs dump, will the mods be on the dump and use it as a third boot?
3.related to 2 if i do a retroarch build with say mario64 start system and configure my controller and save then dump hsqs will those settings stay in the hsqs?
4.will nes hsqs have all games i install before making hsqs?

I have my snes mini dual boot to all the snes & nes variations. Every time I switch firmwares the audio from the menu is not present. Even when I load up a game from that system. I have to power down the system & turn it on again & the sound comes back on. I am using a OTG adapter so all the games & .hsqs files are on the flash drive. The only thing on the mini system is the custom kernel & the cores. I am using the trimmed hsqs files. Should I use the regular non trimmed files since I have everything on a flash drive?

I added NES Classic to my SFC Classic (with extra SNES games added). I'm not sure if I did something wrong. I had to switch to NES (USA/Europe) in the Current Games Collection; uncheck all the additional SNES games I had added; check the SNES NAND file; then sync games. Otherwise the SNES NAND didn't appear in my NES games list.

I had a weird situation here I hope you can give me a hand, so, I followed the steps, and for some reason the text file app to go back to the previous firmware appeared with the main games, and then also the access to the NES firmware, (I'm on a SNES) so of course me all excited, went into the NES firmware and got stucked there, without a way to comeback to the SNES firmware, how should I go on from here to fix this? or at least go back to the snes firmw.
I might add I worked on the latest version of Hakchi2 CE (3.5.0)
and my console is a Snes mini (us)
I hope there's a way to add the "return to previous firmware" on the NES that is displaying now, or maybe I should go entirely back to how my console was before modding it?
I just wanted both classic systems :T and I got lucky to find the last snes they had at a decent price, cause the nes was long gone in my country..

Can you keep it so all of the games are still running under canoe (run natively without complex menus)? Also, what is the purpose of the nand file being added (how is it different from the hsqs files) and is it essential? Basically, is everything here essential to dual boot nes/snes classic systems while maintaining the original look and ease of gaming?

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  6 років тому

As long as you don't add any cores the games with run with the native emulators if they are compatible. The nand file is how you return to the original firmware of your system. It is essential to add the hsqs files for other systems, and the nand file to return to YOUR system.

I was going to try this, and I followed along and got the famicom mini hsqs working fine but when i went to drop the text document into hackchi it was asking me to assign a console/ core for it. Do I just close out of that dialog box then rename it like you did in the video or do I do something else? I managed to get the famicom mini hsqs to boot but then the NES Nand didn't show up so I went and removed the hsqs for now until I know for sure.
Also, how come your HSQS files are under "SquashFS" in the games list? Is that some sort of sorting thing or is there a step I missed? Thanks for the tutorial though, it really helped.

Depends on if you mean the NES or Gameboy version. If you head over to the Hakchi Resources Discord they can get you sorted out. discord.gg/96DKEdd

sorry, patton, that is not very helpful. you can't drag and drop games from windows explorer in hakchi 3.5.2. You need to click on "Add more games" and then you can drag and drop or just select from there.
However, then things get confusing. Once you get that hsqs file synchronized to your system, hakchi will then see your system as whatever the last one you had loaded when you shut down the system. So, you need to click on the top dropdown menu under "Current games collection" and switch to the system where you want the file to go.
For example, I have a NES classic. I added the SNES hsqs file and after syncing it, it shows up as a custom game just like any other. So, I then go to the "Current games collection" and switch it to "Super NES". This is where I add my "Return to NES" text file. Otherwise it will show up on my NES games and that is wrong.
Kinda confusing, but I hope you get what I mean!
