From Saipan to Pagan and Agrigan on Hafa Adai (May 10-12, 1969)

- Peace Corps Marianas chartered the ship, Hafa Adai, to make a three day voyage to the Northern Islands of Pagan and Agrigan. The radio was out on Pagan. In May 1969, roughly 46 people and one PCV lived on Pagan and roughly 36 people and a PC couple lived on Agrigan. Pagan had an airstrip and a dock but Agrigan did not. A small boat was used to get from the ship to Agrigan. On the trip, the doctor did a small operation and the priest held mass. See Pagan & Agrigan photo content for additional details.

Thanks for sharing. I remember when the MV Hafadai came to Pagan. I was 12 years old at that time and I went with my dad on the trip to Agrigan and yes it was a rough ride when the ship was between Pagan and Agrigan.
Thank you so much for sharing your childhood memory. Wish I had more photos--was probably sea sick. I have been sea sick on ferries, fishing boats & cruise ships many places in the world. Hope the story brought back good memories. It brings back a lot of memories. I treasure the pictures you took back then. As you may know, all the houses, the water catchment, and the small dock with the exception of the church are all buried after a mudslide. If I may, can I copy your pictures for my album and share them with others?
Your voice over method on the images has given me an idea. I’ll share mine without music on the background and speak instead. Tell the stories I have yet to tell for the masses here on UA-cam on majority of my trips north and south of Saipan.

I am trying to create two a month using audio & photos from the 1960s. Last week posted one about visiting Palau in 1968. Am working on one for posting next Friday about my first house on Rota before it was destroyed by Typhoon Gilda.

We were Micronesia staff 72-74, Ron was Program and Training Officer. Our time there was unique and delightful, doubly so as I grew up on Guam,it was like returning home! My sister Faythe and husband David were PCVS in Rota 77-80.

Nice images. Thank you for sharing them. I have been staying overnight on the island of Pagan to get between Alamagan and Pagan when coining and leaving the islands. Pagan now has more than two volcanoes. A fiber optic cable were installed in Pagan so no major changes so far, fortunately.
Saipan born, haven't been to Pagan, like to go and see it..
