It is interesting to hear you wonder about what Udot will be like in the future...as a recently returned volunteer serving in Chuuk/Truk lagoon, it seems the islands (with maybe the exception of Moen/Weno) have largely stayed the same. Limited development and electricity, the stores still being little shacks alongside the road, the lush green vegetation, wide starry skies at night. The people's behavior is similar too; the generosity, the singing, the little children wandering everywhere, the girls who can make banana leaf plates very quickly. Your experience of nearly 60 years ago was not too far off from what I would say about my experience today!

I somehow came to this video. Happily, so, I will say. I was in Chuuk (Truk) as a young teen and even spent a month or so in the summer of 1967 on Udot with the language instructors from the Marianas. Thank you for sharing this and your other videos.

I don't know why this showed up on my UA-cam feed today but I am glad it did. I was in the Peace Corps way back in the 1970s and worked in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Public Defender Office. I spent some time on Moen back then and I often wonder how things are there now compared to how they were then. I met some truly wonderful people there. I have never forgotten them or the islands of the lagoon. Thanks for posting this.

I lived on yap as a child from about 1955 to 1960. Then i was going there off and on in the 60s. I lived on yap in 1970 to 71. That was the last time i saw my beloved yap. Still have yap in my heart. My fathers ashes were spread in yap.

WOW! Wonderful archive! Rose Barcinas is my grandma on my Dad's side. I never got to know her since she passed too early in life. But she sounds just as wonderful as I imagined! I also got to visit that area pretty recently! It's still really great!

I'm from Saipan but I enjoyed videos like this. I took a trip to Rota 99 and 00 and felt very welcome by the locals on Rota.

I remembered the fresh milk that was brought to saipan. Foremost in the orange and white carton. That milk was special since it was the first time we probably had it fresh. It was good milk too.

Thank you Kit. I had visited Yap too in the Summer of '69 and have fond memories of the people and culture.

It's really something to be able to watch all this 50 years later on my phone. This was a unique window in time of a special place and I'd like to see more video logs of places like these, especially from the past. You guys couldn't have imagined the internet or smartphones back then. Now anyone can see this unique record, instantly.
