How to Rig a Berkley Gulp Shrimp [WEEDLESS]

  • Gulp shrimp baits (made by Berkley Fishing) are an extremely popular lure of choice for saltwater anglers.
    And the reason for this popularity is their ability to catch fish. I personally use these Gulp Shrimp to catch everything from Snook, Redfish, Trout, and have even caught grouper and flounder off of them before as well.
    However, the fish-catching results on Berkley Gulp Baits will be dependent on these three factors:
    1) Properly rigging the Gulp bait
    2) Properly retrieving the Gulp bait
    3) Finding quality fish to present the Gulp bait to
    This video addresses an important portion of the "How to rig a Gulp shrimp" item, which is a factor that simply cannot be skipped.
    Without a properly rigged shrimp, the lure will spin around and around which does not look natural to a fish so they will not eat it... and it's also bad for you line to get twisted up.
    Because if the Gulp isn't swimming naturally (or even worse, spinning around like it was in a hurricane), you are going to have a tough time attracting any fish to bite it.
    So make sure to watch this video to make sure you cover Step 1.
    Once you feel comfortable with rigging the Gulp shrimp, go to the link below to see how you can do Steps 2 & 3.

    Cut a channel into the bait for the hook. Those r fairly thick baits and you don’t get much exposed hook when bait pushes down on it. The channel will allow more of the hook to be exposed.

      During the summer where there are lots of baitfish in the area, white is a smart color to use. Here's the type of white lure we find works best (it's actually one we personally created... scientific reasoning shown in the description): shop.saltstrong.com/products/slam-shady-paddletails

    I just found a pack of Gulp shrimp in my fishing stuff but don't have any of those hooks handy. Would a regular worm hook or other type of hook without a twist or weight work too or would it just sink upside down? I will be fishing from 3 to 5 feet of water.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  9 років тому

      +Lil Joe Fishing I would not recommend a regular worm hook because it would be prone to spin around when retrieved (the weight keeps it upright better). Instead, just use a typical 1/8th oz jig head for 3 to 5 ft of water... here's a post showing how to rig it on jig head: www.saltstrong.com/articles/berkley-gulp-saltwater-shrimp-independent-review/.

    I've searched for a saltwater specific swim bait hooks and couldn't find any. Do you feel that a saltwater hooks are more stout and won't easily bend on a nice sized fish?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 років тому

      I'm not sure that any swim bait hooks are saltwater specific, so it's all about finding the ones that have the strongest hooks. So far, the one featured in this video are the strongest that I've found plus they have a very cool feature in their TwistLock design that makes it very easy to perfectly rig soft plastics.
      The only downside is that they are tough to find, so we bought a bulk order from the manufacturer to provide to our subscribers... here's a link in case interested: shop.saltstrong.com/products/owner-twistlock-hooks-for-soft-plastics

    I was just wondering, how long do you keep the "juice' from your Gulps? I have a container that seems to have gone south on me. I'm not sure whether to risk loosing lunch over opening it, or is it natural to change color over time? Thanks for the feedback.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 років тому

      Once it changes color, it may be time to replace the juice. I typically replace mine every time I buy another jug of shrimp.

      Erik Saylor Hey Erik, thanks for leaving the nice comment! I'm glad to see that you're implementing the tips up in VA... yes, the inshore species almost always behave very similar to one another regardless of the region. The hook that I used in that video is make by Owner, and it's called the TwistLock. My favorite hook size for these 3 inch Gulp shrimp are the 3/0 ones with a 1/16 oz weight.

      Let them sit out in the sun while in the packet in the proper position and the heat will often enable them to reshape back to where they should be.

    hi, thanks for the rigging tips. do these shrimp plastics have a nice tail action when worked through the water?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  9 років тому

      squirrelscuba These shrimp baits have very little tail action, but they still work extremely well. What you have to do though is twitch it so that the body darts in quick/short bursts just like a real shrimp does when spooked. However, some days the slow retrieves works best... only way to know is to vary your retrieve until you hone in on what is working best for that particular day.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 років тому

      I haven't seen any noticeable difference between rigging it forwards or backwards after cutting off the tail. So I recommend using it forward until it's too beat up to continue using, and then turn it around so you have some fresh plastic to hold onto the hook.

    Great video. I just joined the premium plan. My future son in law commented "that we never seem to catch much when we go fishing". My daughter's response was "We did once".
    Gotta & will change that once and for all using your help!! We fish Sarasota Bay
    Q...What happens when the top of the bait eventually tears open from the weedless rig where the point us buried. Is there a fix short of grabbing a new gulp?
    Also, do you have a color preference for clear vs cloudy water; or sunny vs cloudy skies.
    Thanks

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  9 років тому

      Greg Finch Hey Greg, yes, I saw that you joined our Insider Plus group yesterday... welcome to the family!
      In order to catch the max amount of fish per bait, I always start by leaving room for an extra twist when using a new Gulp. This way, you can make the extra twist once that point section is torn up allowing for it to get buried into a fresh spot. Once that new spot is torn up from more catches, I then often times cut off the tail and rig from the bottom end... I'll make a video on exactly how to do that best and put it in the Insider Plus section soon.
      For colors, I only use white and new penny... I'll start with one and then twitch to the other after a while if I don't get any good hits. White seems to work best during the summer months and new penny often wins in the winter... but both can produce good fish throughout the year.
      I'm sure the other colors work just fine too, but only taking two options (one light and one dark) has worked best for me... I've been finding that color isn't nearly as important as retrieve style and presentation speed, so I make slight alterations to my retrieve style and speed until I hone in on what triggers the most hits for that particular day.

      Greg Sarasota bay has excellent fishing! Key to catching fish there as any where are locating them first! Find the mullet schools and target them as Red fish and other fish hang with them. Mullet are easy to spot because they jump and churn the surface water up.
