The 3 Best Ways To Rig Gulp Shrimp

- It's Berkley Gulp Shrimp time again! We've had a ton of questions on the best way to rig Gulp shrimp and the answer is, "It really all depends on the situation."
For instance, we might rig the shrimp on a jig head when fishing deeper docks and similar structure, and we might even use a circle hook sometimes (it actually works really well).
So we asked Salt Strong Fishing Coach Tony Acevedo to do a video revealing the top 3 ways to rig a Berkley Gulp Shrimp (and when to use each method).
Any questions on rigging shrimp? Let us know in the comments.

Really good video. Thanks. The sad thing about getting older is you get set in your way doing the same things over and over. I never thought a twist hook would work on a 3” Gulp shrimp. I’ve only used them on bigger paddle tail type soft baits.
Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!!
@@Saltstrong thanks for filming and posting!
I have a bag of little pieces of my left over gulps for under bridges and stuff awesome for trout and mangrove snapper. I love gulp and always pick up a few bags before fishing.
Thank you for your easy way of rigging shrimp buck tail.
What bucktail?????
the last technique my friend puts split shot on to get some extra distance with a 8ft rod
Jigheads with the eye in the front is for baits you want to move with a wide sweeping motion through the water column (swimming baits, fluke style, really any plastic for inshore works besides a crab.) If you really want your jig to sink straight down the best head has a 90° eye and a spherical shape. That being said we have extremely shallow coasts here in Florida and I love moving a jig through the water column so I like to fish hook eye forward jigs like the first one in the video. Just a bit of info for people looking for the right jighead for their fishing application.
Nice video..we’re going out tomorrow, to Mosquito Lagoon Titusville Fl. Hoping for results w/ these Gulp baits..thanks
Thanks needed to know how to rig that twist lock.
I can just smell this video
Awesome tanker fish you caught at end of video...LoL.
By the look of the package, you're using the older style Gulp. According to Luke, the new version packaging has a colored lower right corner...but Gulp still works!
Stuart Kidder you are right! They changed the dam material to a softer material my tail ends get there ass bit off all the time. I can’t find a circle hook jig if they even make them I don’t see why not
I'm new to fishing; just bought a rod about an hour ago and was fixed up with something called a X-eyed ball jigs and Gulp! bait. I have some questions if someone would be kind enough to help me. Since I'm going to be fishing off my own dock to neighbors docks I want to use set up number two but my jigs don't have that spring thing on it so I don't know what to do. Second question is how do you take the Gulp off the hook without ruining it?
With the circle hook, where do you think I can put a small pinch weight for a further accurate cast? Just at the hook or farther up?
Thank you
My question, what the recommended length of rod for surf casting? & which more prefer sensitive or hard rod ?
A hard 9-12 foot rod is recomended
Thank you .
Can this work with yellowtail snapper?
Why do you rig them upside down
I noticed the same thing. The Light color is the bottom of the shrimp
Ringing bait up side down
This color pattern has the eyes (top) on the light side and the legs (bottom) on the dark side, so it's actually rigged properly per the color design. That being said, it can work the other way too.
If a shrimp swims tail first? Why would you put it on any hook head first and belly up?
Great question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here:

What size circle hook
Johnny Boy I use a 3/0 or 4/0. Some brands of 4/0 hooks are a little big which is why I’ll bump down to a 3/0
Is 10cm good
What about a gulp shrimp on a popper

Why are you rigging the shrimp upside down?
They're not upside down. The color scheme on the Newpenny Gulp shrimp is inverted. The light side is on the top. Look at the shrimp itself. It's smooth on the top and leg imprints on the bottom. Most of the Gulp Shrimp have the dark color on the top and the light on the bottom. The Newpenny is reversed.
John Harrison which side up ? Is it the spotted white side or the red side ? Does it matter which side the hook end up ?
The eyes are on the white side, vis-à-vis the top.
Aquatic Mullet What? You do realise in this colour they make the white colour on the top of the lure with the eyes and everything? And all the legs are on the bottom side?
Unless 99.99999% of the world is wrong and shrimp actually have their legs ON TOP of their bodies, and you were right all along.
Rigged upside down...darker portion should be up...as well as there is a little slot for hook to rest in
Be sure to check out this video to see why it's rigged this way: ua-cam.com/video/SscK2P1qOFM/v-deo.html
All i catch is sea robins with this.
1st one should of had the white side facing down.
