Nope. It was actually very representative of the era. The comedic style was in keeping with early 90's SNL (since that's where the cast and writers came from), the visual style was grunge-inspired (long hair, flannels, and T-shirts), and there's a distinct fascination with late-60's counterculture, as was popular in the early '90's.
My family moved to an Upper Midwestern town like Aurora the year this movie came out and I think it's hilariously accurate, if anything. Besides, every decade's culture tends to bleed into the first few years of the next one. There were still greasers in the early 60s, hippies in the early 70s, discos in the early 80s, etc.
MoonerFury I agree. But i think the 80's truly ended in September 1991 when the band Nirvana brought Grunge to the charts which at that point, i think everyone knew 80's culture was over. So yeah, with what i said above this movie is still outdated for 1992.

I met a person in Toronto who grew up with Mike Meyers. She said most of the lines he used in the movie (party time, excellent) were insider slangs that their group of friends used to say. He put a lot of the stuff in his personal life into the movies.
I want to update this by saying they did in fact go as Wayne's World for one of the Halloween episodes....except apparently there was some sort of disagreement behind the scenes so they both ended up dressing up as Wayne lmfao

This movie sums up the 90’s perfectly, I love the Wayne’s world movies, seen them hundreds of time, each time still just as funny. This sort of movie would never work now, the world has gone too serious, can’t even call a woman a babe anymore without being marched into HR, God I miss the 90’s, great times.

This came out during a bad recession and cheered me immensely. I saw the first movie twice. Bad times in the USA.
