Zankaru Maybe you're saying that because you're used to seeing him in the social sphere. In the academic studies field Neil is really focused, objective and down to earth (pun intended, lol).
I know right, im hyped about it even though its twenty years or more just to witness another solar system. And to think, that before we were only going to be able to see other stars with periscopes, or imagine with our minds within our generation, but no, as it turns out this can be an achievable reality in our life time.
Yes, it's a real thing. Stephen Hawking was involved. Whether they get the project off the ground I don't know, but as an addition to the whole giant laser thing I read the other day that the Chinese are planning a test solar collector in orbit. It will be designed to beam energy to Earth, but it could also be used to beam energy to exploration craft inside our solar system - how f'ing cool would that be!!
It’s mind blowing to imagine a close up picture of a sun that is not ours. I’d also love to see our sun from the perspective of Alpha Centauri. That would revolutionize science as we know it.
Neil reminds me of that one cool uncle that's always telling random stories that make you think hard about things. And then afterwards you go home and wonder why your dad is so lame compared to him.
Mexican American Not only can't the right distinguish minorities from each other, but it also extends to scientists. They think all scientists are Charles Darwin and all black people are Obama, so therefore they REALLY hate Neil Degrasse Tyson and REALLY think he's a liar. That, and they don't believe in verifiable facts.
The way he explains things, it's evident he picturises it all and so it's easy for him to explain it in simple terms so everyone can understand. Love him
I agree that there are a bunch of hicks in Missouri, but there are a lot of smart people here too. We have a university solely dedicated to science and technology. Heck, I grew up on a cattle farm and still managed to get my bachelors degree in physics and math. I also quite admire Neil and several other scientists no matter their race or ethnicity. :)
This is supposed to be a comedy show. Instead I have Neil deGrasse Tyson getting my brain excited about science. Even when Colbert doesn't do what he's supposed to do, he's still hitting it out of the park at the moment.
I was just watching Cosmos on Netflix and thought to myself, "I hope Neil has been on some talk shows recently so I can watch his interviews" and boom I see this posted on my UA-cam home page lol honestly it is so amazing to listen to someone with so much knowledge like him talk. Never gets boring.
This is such a great conversation, and very cool how much Stephen loves talking to Neil :) It's also incredibly refreshing to hear an intelligent discussion about science such as this taking place on a late night talk show, and done so in a way where both people are genuinely enthusiastic about what they're discussing! :D
I just want to sit in a room with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Brian Cox and listen to them talk. I don't even mind whether or not it's about the universe; they could discuss snow globes or the most efficient way to peel an orange and I'd still be fascinated.
@@chiefjetsonofflare5329 yeah like you can prevent the sun from becoming red giant or destroy big as hell asteroid coming towards earth or double the resources present on earth. @@thelastpigeon8098 No, we can monitor that very easily... it's harder to detect small objects because they don't give off nearly as much light. Facts instead of funding 20% of the our budget into the our Military that is already the most powerful, he would fund those billions into space exploration and I know he would want to be the first world leader to ever go to space!!!!
That can never work is any government system anywhere. People like that cannot exist in political systems which panders to lowest common denominator.
I love the visible enthusiasm Neil has the whole time he's talking about these planets and whatnot. He's all "oh man I can't tell these people about all this cool shit fast enough!"
This guy is simply amazing. Every time I listen to him I can feel his thirst his passion for knowledge and Science. And somehow he seems to pass on that curiosity in others as well.
Everyone's talking about NGT and that's okay but don't sleep on Stephen either. He's showing a lot of knowledge about these kind of things as well. Just like he did when Brian Greene came to talk about gravitational waves.
I thought Stephen said "...if there was one guest I'd like to get Snowden with it would be Neil DeGrasse Tyson...". I thought to myself, this is an odd turn of events.
When Neil talks, there is complete silence everywhere, you do not hear anyone from the audience talk, cough, sneeze, or move, and same thing happens around us, all surrounding sounds get shut off
These nano satellites can accelerate to 20% speed of light using laser, but sadly they can't decelerate when they reach the target. It's kinda like horizon probe on Pluto, they can only do fly-by missions.
It's kinda like the horizon probe, except on a much larger scale for all variables involved. It needs precision targeting or it'll miss the star system entirely, and even more precision to even get close to the planet. External input is impossible, so the whole tiny probe has to do all its own course corrections. The chances of it getting anywhere close to the planet and then being able to send data back to earth will be tiny. And it'll have to gather data at 1/5th the speed of light! That's so fast, the average camera's shutter time would be too slow to even keep the planet in the shot... So they'll have to send hundreds of these to have a hope at getting anything useful back.
Korenn That's exactly what they're going to do, sent hundreds to thousands at a time when they finally do the mission somewhere in the 2040's. However, they've decided against cameras and instead they're going to use something that basically collects light at all frequencies so that they don't have to focus the cameras to be able to create images at various focuses among other tech the group is currently developing for this mission.
