      the gringos that Mexico don't like are the ones who try to change Mexico into what they left benind, that try to change our culture and traditions,. Mexicans are a very patriotic and proud people that would gladly give their lives for Mexico.
      Mexican also have very big balls, so this is kind of a warning to those who move there and try to force change.

    We were just vacationing in Jalisco and visited Ajijic and we walked into a restaurant and most of the clients were gringos and keep in mind I’m from Tijuana a true Mexican by birth and citizenship, and they looked at us as if we were out of place and lost. That’s amazing, I couldn’t believe I felt like a foreigner in my own country.

      Another added thing is that all through COVID crisis. Mexico was one of the very few countries whose border was open to tourism. I visited Mexico for that purpose and It is a great country. Mexicans are very polite people you will never get hostility from them like you would in US or Europe. But so many of these foreigners don't attempt to learn the language and way of life there. They still think they are in their own country. You need to respect Mexico and it's culture.

    I am Mexican and the biggest issue for us I believe is the price raise that comes with expats when they stay in mainly a few of our best areas…and the lost of good value that comes with it. When expats come here they love the “cheap” prices but they usually pay over the asking price (I.e. keep the change, tipping over the local maximum 15%). The effect is that quality standards are usually lower, prices get higher… we are then excluded from those areas just cause it is ridiculous to buy or pay anything there since it is a rip off or because we can’t afford it. Then expats ask houses to have water filters or a smoke detector or AC or another thing that you - not us - consider a must have at a house. The effect on that is that the real state offer changes becomes premium, at premium prices and we can’t afford it or we are not willing to pay ridiculous prices for things we don’t need. For me that is the problem: I don’t mind if you don’t speak fluent Spanish but I do mind that now Mexicans can’t afford rent. It is crazy that many expats left the us because of gentrification but they are bringing it here. So do come, but be mindful in how you spend your money and where you stay. Ask the locals what is the fair price for things and pay just that. That alone would be deeply appreciated by us locals.

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  2 роки тому +8

      Thank you so much for sharing your perspective. The way I see it is you gotta follow the money. Eventually businesses will go back to catering to the locals to make money because the expats might not be a sustainable income source. But at the end of the day foreginers are not taking over the whole country just certain areas, thats why its called gentrification. Eventually things will even out, but right now it's going to rough in several areas as this all takes place. Also side note when the Dollar and the Euro Fall there wont be many expats that can afford all that luxury, but the typical Mexican will be able to afford it. Patience grasshopper

      Gentrification is nothing new and happens all over the world. It's funny how we always look at those who hate the change but we never ask the locals what they think of the change. The reason being is because many more people actually welcome the change and that is why it happens in the first place. Mexico is now growing and this is going to continue to be the norm all over Mexico for the time being. Thanks for sharing!

    • @amiyrbarclift1640
      @amiyrbarclift1640 Рік тому +2

      @@JoseArteagaTravels That's true. I think it is inevitable that Mexico will continue to change. As more people continue to move there. I think this will happen more around the world where it won't be a place that is one culture. Living in NY I see it all the time. People have come here from all over the world and it seems as if Mexico and other countries like it are next on people's radar.
      The only tricky part for me is if I left America. I would leave America to go somewhere different. For a different lifestyle and mentality. I wouldn't want to leave America just to go somewhere that is just like America and that is something I am afraid could happen in Mexico.

    Born in California but living in Mexico as a a citizen for almost a year now. My mom is from Mexico so I was able to get citizenship by birthright. I try to obey local customs such as tipping only 10-15%, not tipping taxis, etc. It's been easier for me to assimilate since I understand the culture and I love it here. I stay away from expat groups and cringe at that word. Maybe because I'm also a citizen, look like a local, can speak Spanish, I've never once felt unwelcome.

    I agree with your sentiment, but I want to add a few things. I befriended a young lady from DF who sold stuff on college campuses in SoCal. She invited to visit her home in DF and met the family. They liked me. Sadly, tragedy struck them several times, and on 3 occasions I was in a position to help out, which I did without hesitation or desire for compensation. Things in Mexico are a bit different. Once the family matriarch passed away, and I was there with her and 8 or10 teenagers, the moment it happened, and the ambulance service that transports the deceased wanted cash right then and there, so I paid them. Another time, my friend's eldest sister's husband died in an auto accident and his family was trying to steal the business he created from her., and he worked in the USA, legally, for about 6 years, and sadly she was unaware off her rights to garner death benefits from the Social Security Administration for their 3 children ($20,000 in annual benefits then), so I sent her a packet with all the info she need, which was no easy feat and took 2-3 days to get because I included instructions on where to go in DF to get things done. I always sit down with people that I can help, and when it's appropriate say: "let me show something..." You need to be both student and teacher to succeed.

    I am an American Latino just like you but I also plan on living in Latin America either my parents country of Guatemala or somewhere else in the region. I am not against some Anglo Americans moving down there but they need to integrate into Latin culture. American culture does have a lot of good things but it also has a lot of Ugly that is best if it doesn't migrate down there such as consumerism on steroids, how superficial dating is, how people are so image based in America, how out of control feminisms has gotten and half the population is medicated on "health issues" that can be cured just by being close with your family. Though not perfect Latin culture has plenty of beautiful things about it. I hope Americans really adapt and don't ruin the region.

    Hey guys I’m Mexican, born in Yucatan, and I been following you in the Facebook group also cause I’m interested in your concerns as most of Mexicans, cause we love you guys wherever come from, we follow in Mexico the doctrina Estrada wich means: Is a statement in which it is argued that no nation can intervene in the internal affairs of another. So we prefer peace ☮️ with ALL countries, 🇷🇺🇧🇷🇺🇸🇫🇷🇨🇦🇨🇳, no excuses. We also have been receiving refugees (politics, war immigrants) from many many years, and I love to stay in contact with you, cause that the best way to communicate between us, and let you know:
    1- this is not your fault, many Mexicans also live in the US, I used to work in the US and everyone was so nice with me, there was jus 1 minor exception, and see u here in merida is very just.
    2- Try to embrace Mexican culture, no HATE speeches of any kind, just peace and love, and if you have money, please go to local bussines, trust me, rich man have enough money, there’s a bunch of poor people that is trying to work hard to get something.
    3- Gentrification it’s a real problem in a few areas, mexico is in transition to get all of you guys, but if possible, try to no get houses to close, to put the prices not to high. Inflation is hitting here not to hard but contributes to higher prices.
    4- If you have something that you don’t need anymore in good shape, give to some one or put as gift to take in your garage, post it or do a donation even to church’s, we don’t care about religion, but here most of they help children and immigrants, there’s also dedicate places.
    5- You’re less expats than you might think, I don’t see any gringos in my neighborhood, I just see people as me, doing changes in their life’s, I see brothers and sisters, cause that’s the culture here, any nation in the world it’s welcome to come to Mexico, and a few Mexicans will feel upset, for the higher prices on the market on land they dream to get, let’s say a little jealous. And it’s important to keep communication between us, so we can help each other, and for sure, we want you to estar here in Mexico for the reason you already know, this country is a paradise to live free and open your mind, WE LOVE YOU ALL, enjoy Mexico and keep letting us know your concerns. ❤️❤️ Let’s keep making this country a better and safer place for everybody.

    I was just in CDMX. I am an American citizen, living in LA, who goes once a year...mostly to sharpen my language skills (you can speak a lot of Spanish in LA, which I do, but it's not exactly the same as going into a fully-immersed space). A lot of my friends, who maybe have traveled to CDMX one time, were telling me 'stay in Roma Norte.' But I stopped staying there over a decade ago. It was already obnxious a decade ago. So I stay in places like Tabacalera--still off Reforma and central to the action--but mostly Mexican. I'll still dive bomb Roma a bit in the evenings. This time Roma Norte was just too much for me. It's so built up. And you really find it hard to practice Spanish. It's also nothing like the rest of the city, where the street scene feels so much more vibrant. I speak Spanish pretty fluently with no accent. Most locals know that I'm not from CDMX but they think I'm a domestic tourist from, say, Monterrey. So it was interesting that sometimes the shop girls would get offended when I spoke to them in Spanish. They would give off such a snooty vibe. You could tell that they had internalized a lot of self-loathing in their glorification of Anglophone Prowess.

I read that this is the same scenario is playing out in Portugal, Colombia etc. The gentrification is pricing the locals out in their neighborhoods areas the Portuguese are not happy either. The worst part of all this is the fact that majority of remote workers NEVER get to know any locals residents to intergrate of their stay in, and above all Expats don't even attempted to try to speak their language, because so call entitlement and think the world revolves around this people, intergrate with the locals.....the audacity SOME of this Expats, now you know why Mexicans, and Portuguese and other countries are furious and try to kick this people out if their neighborhoods, this locals are not to play around with especially the Mexican is seen them in action.

      America has been dealing with this for decades. The "immigrants" do not intergrate into the society and work for cheap which in turn makes it harder for American citizens to get jobs. For instance landscaping, carpenter or handyman work. Most of them don't carry insurance and have the overhead for running a business like American citizens are required to carry and we cannot compete with that. So we both, Mexico and America have some of the same issues.

I also see massive change in demographics in the U.S. so we're used to many different languages on stores and different races of people. Muchas Gracias y suerte.

      @@JoseArteagaTravels “Distinción” is the Spanish spoken in which the “C”before “i” or “e” and the “Z” before “a” “o” or “u” sounds like the “th” in English. In “Seseo” the “C” and “Z” sound like “S”. I have the impression that Latin Americans hate that. I hope I am wrong about that. For me “Distinción” is simply a personal preference. When I was in college back in the 70s one of my Spanish professors spoke that way. I loved to hear that man speak Spanish. Many years later I subscribed to a Spanish audio magazine in which at first most of the people speaking spoke like that. I liked it very much. Most if my own Spanish speaking during all these years since college has been reading aloud. I began practicing reading in that way and soon it became automatic for me. So now I wonder if I ever got to México if I should unlearn that way of speaking so as to not offend people. That professor I mentioned was actually Portuguese but he spoke beautiful Spanish.

    I think it's important to emphasise that Mexicans have no problem with US people. We don't hate them, the issue and all the complaints have nothing to do with the color of their skin, their language, their culture. Actually, they adapt well and are good neighbors and good people, at least I've never had any problem with them (I live in Mexico City). It's 100% about the fact that their presence raises the prices, and it's not directly their fault, everybody has a right to move to wherever is best for them to find a better life. It's not personal. The authorities of both countries have to cooperate and find solutions, it's them who failed both communities in the first place. Migration, in all of its forms, is a natural occurrence and both migrants and locals deserve dignity, safety and to be treated with kindness and respect.

I often wonder who I would be today had I remained there, here I flourished into me, but when you get taken from everything you knew, it lives a longing that never recedes. I think this is the space I occupy today. By the way, I too am an artist and would love to see your wife’s work.

    The main areas affected with gentrification in Mexico City is Roma Norte, Condesa, and Polanco. I happen to live in Roma Norte. Everything has increased in price. Most of the foreigners here are Spainards actually, and other local wealthy Mexicans. There's lots of people from the USA, UK and Canada too.
    The main problem is the fact that corporations have bought up many colonial buildings and turned them into Airbnb and hotels. So, a local trying to find reasonable housing to rent or even buy is slim pickings. As soon as a rental unit is available it's rented immediately.
    But, the main thing that is going on, is the fact that the Mayor (Governor) of CDMX put forth a contract with Airbnb to bring digital nomads to CDMX and that's why there's even more outrage here about what's going on. There have been marches/demonstrations, which have recently led the Mayor to rethink her decision and is thinking about putting some parameters on Airbnb and even maybe mimic what Spain has done about Airbnbs, and ban all short term Airbnbs in certain areas and only have long-term in the most touristy areas.
    All I can say, is if anyone is planning on staying in Roma Norte and those other specific locations for long term, they better find a place sooner than later while there's still rentals available and priced as good as it's going to get, as the prices keep climbing, like at least 10% - 20% each year. A previous place I lived increased the rent 20%. Cheapest place is about $1000 and average is $2000 - $3000 and those are only apartments. But, in Polanco it's really high, totally unattainable for most folks.
    But, the main problem is the corporations buying up old apartment complexes refusing to update contracts for the existing tenants and therefore basically kicking them out to make it long term housing for expats/digital nomads.
    I hope the Mayor puts a stop to all this because it's really getting out of control.
    And where I live, the building is open for locals and anyone else who wants to rent. I just happened to find it as soon as it went on the market or otherwise, I would have missed out. Therefore, I plan to stay here indefinitely.

      Wow thank you so much for sharing and shedding more light on what is actually happening there in the Mexico City area! I honestly had no idea. But knowing Mexico it totally makes sense. I hope the Mayor does go back on the Airbnb situation we are having something similar happen out here in Merida. Thank you again for sharing your boots on the ground actual experience with the whole situation. Saludos!

    Hello Jose. I have really enjoyed watching your videos: I'm from Winnipeg Canada I'm 67 years old I'm single live a very simple life. I live on my pension of around 1950.00 month. My problem is I had a kidney transplant 3 years ago but I'm not sick at all plus i have diabetes but I would be coming out there 100% debt free. Don't smoke drink very little don't gamble the biggest thing I would be eating. What is your thoughts about me trying to move to mexico. I'm coming to Mexico Sept 1-30th. I live comfortably here on what I make, I pay 900.00 per month per month plus utilities. But my city has become so very dangerous and can't handle the winters anymore. I'm a social butterfly love to meet people and try new things. I would love to hear back from you. Regards Brian

    What worries me about this growing inmigration is that, first, US citicenz being discriminated by mexicans independently of their legal status in the country is really a minor issue, and that is OK, it should not happen at all... but Mexican citizens being discriminated in the US independently of their legal status is a whole different story, aditionally there have been instances (minor as they can be) of US inmigrants discriminating mexicans on México... so... yes it can be a little bit upsetting. Secondly yes, the influx of money rises the cost of living on the areas occupied by the newcomers, forcing the locals out and forming pockets of inmigrant population in major cities or relevant value areas... that may be ok and just a temporary phenomenon of the market economy and it is of minor concern when we talk about canadian, european, asian or other latin american countries... but the US is a different story and that comes to the third and main reason of concern... that is, the US in particular have a long, long history of invading other countries under the pretext of "defending the interests of its citizens"... the recipe is, get a group of US citizens nto a country, ask nicely to be alowwed to stay for a while, then have some altercation, call for the US government for support, and voila, the marines are marching to invade under the guise of "defense of american interest" and eiter invading or installing puppets into power... happened here in México ... Texas, California, New Mexico, etc, happened in Granada, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala and a long, long list of etceteras.... and now the US government is actually threatening to invade... it's just a matter of a large enough group of "expats" to cry loud enough for US help to protect them from insecurity and it's bye bye México.... may sound paranoid or over dramatic... but i just do not know.

    Your a good guy and brought some good information. The world is changing and people in America are looking for a place of peace from the crazy government and arguments day in and day out on the news. We've had millions of Mexicans immigrate to America. I went to the grocery store one day and stood in front of the butter for a minute staring because they were all written in Spanish. It just didn't register that it was butter to me. lol I grabbed it and flipped it over to the English side and it finally clicked. It will all work out. People are people, there are good and bad in every culture, and country. One other thing is I was raised with an Italian mother and an Irish/English father. I wanted to speak Italian so bad and for some reason it never came easy to me. 😔
