In this video, I will show you how I went about troubleshooting my Whirlpool Duet electric dryer (but you can use these tips with almost any electric dryer), because it would spin, but there was no heat in the dryer. I started off thinking that the problem was with the thermal fuse or thermistor, but upon testing it with a Klein multimeter (you can use any brand), I found that both of those components were still functioning. I also thought the dryer's high limit thermostat might be broken, but that also was functioning. What I eventually found to be the problem was the heating element had broken and needed to be replaced. It had developed a break in the coil and shorted against the metal baseplate. Troubleshooting systematically down the line helps to make sure that you don't replace the wrong parts unnecessarily.
Anyone who has older appliances has probably encountered problems with an electric dryer not heating or not drying in one cycle. Our front-loading Whirlpool Duet electric dryer has been a real workhorse for us, but it wasn't getting hot. I bought it used for $100 about 5 years ago (and it was already about 7 years old!), and I've only had to put about $30 in replacement parts to keep it going for that long. I prefer to fix things because it's cheaper than hiring an appliance repair person, and it gives me an increased sense of confidence and pride in being able to fix most of the things on our property. Remember, a lot of the tips shown here will also work with a gas dryer, but make sure to turn off the gas before servicing!

Another thing you NEED to understand is that these things trip or break for a reason. In this case, it could have been because it is an old element, and it might have just drooped too low to the metal baseplate, which needs to be isolated or it will short and break the heater coil, causing a loss of continuity in the electric circuit. In other cases, it could be that you have a obstructed vent exhaust hose, and the lint is reducing ventilation and making the dryer trip from overheating. These causes need to be fixed, or the symptoms--like a blown thermal fuse will keep happening, or, worse yet, you could have a devastating fire.
Transcript:
I have an older Whirlpool Duet dryer that is having problems getting up to temperature. It's just blowing cold air and just not really doing anything heating wise, so I think there might be a problem with the thermal fuse. So I'm gonna take it out and test it for continuity and then see if I can reset it and get the heat turned on pretty quick. On this Whirlpool Duet, the thermal fuse will be down here you're going to remove the screw here and the screw here, and then you're going to pull this piece down and out of the way
I just leave my screws here. This guy right here you're going to take a screw out right up in here and one over here on the right here and then this on this one there's a little there's a little like catch right here for it to rest on but your dryer might be a little different than mine yeah lift this up and pull this out and there's going to be all kinds of crap in here lint and whatnot there's going to be some in here too so you're going to want to probably get a little vacuum and vacuum this out
so this is your make sure that your dryer is unplugged - Навчання та стиль

Followed this guide step by step and replaced my heating element successfully. Thank you!!
Excellent!
Thanks for the video Jason. I ordered a heating element through your link and will let you know if that solves my problem. Mine had no continuity as well. * this fixed my dryer, thanks again!
Good luck!
What a life saver. Bravo bud
Thanks!
Just the video I was looking for.
Thank you brother. This is going to save a lot of heartache, time and money. Hopefully you get something in return when I order with your link!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
@JasonSipe16 You bet, so I order the kit from your link. It's only the part that is furthest back on the heating element that didn't have continuity, so I replaced that and threw in the new heating element but after like 6 cycles drying, that part furthest back goes out. I've replaced that part twice now. Heating element and the other components have continuity and seem to be fine but that part furthest back. Any idea what could be causing this?
Weird. Sorry that's happening. I honestly don't know why it would be doing that as the one I used is still working.
@@JasonSipe16 Well I feel dumb but I think I messed up. Looks like the thermal cut off fuse part number shows two parts. I've only been replacing the part furthest back and not the middle piece. I'm going to get a new set and give it a whirl(pool)
Ugg... my tomorrow looks busy, but 8:48 makes it worth it. Thanks.
How did it go?
Ordering parts and a multi-meter! Thanks for the guidance!!
Good Luck!
Thanks man!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your video very explanatory
And thank for the parts links
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate the video, thanks for your help
Thanks!
Thank you!
Very helpful thank you
Thanks for watching!
Would this differ greatly for propane?
For some of the sensors, it would be very similar, but a gas-powered dryer, has a completely different heater to it
Awesome. 👏 is it normal for it to be smoky after replacing the heating element?
smoky? Not a lot, hopefully--but maybe a tiny bit if you've disturbed some of the lint and dust down there as the element may burn some of it off. if that smell goes on for more than 10 minutes, I'd shut it down and vacuum it out.
@@JasonSipe16 thanks! You were exactly right. We vacuumed it out and even wiped it as clean as we could. However, when re-attaching the “metal casing” for the element i think I disturbed a little bit of lint. Shut it off, flipped it back on, and no issues. If it does it again I’ll disassemble and give it another vacuum.
@@americancollegegrad3729 Excellent--thanks for the update!
