If you have no heat in your dryer, you can repair most issues yourself for minimal cash outlay. A common problem with a Whirlpool Duet electric dryer is that it is not getting hot or drying clothes completely in one cycle. This is often a result of it needing a thermal fuse or high limit thermostat replacement.

In this video, I will show what a high limit thermostat is, how to test continuity of the high limit thermostat switch with a Klein digital multimeter, how to heat up the thermostat to make it lose continuity (as it's designed to do) and also how to reset it so it will start allowing your dryer to heat again. If it isn't working as shown, you will need to buy anther one. You can also change out all the parts with brand new ones, like the thermal fuse, the high limit switch and thermostat.
*PLEASE NOTE: For safety reasons, you should always unplug your dryer from the wall when you work on it!*
The main function of the thermostat in a dryer is to keep the heating element from overheating and burning up the dryer. It is a mechanical switch that will lose its continuity when the bi-metal device inside of it gets to a certain temperature. This causes the electricity to be disrupted and makes the heating element shut off and cool down a bit. Then, when the thermostat cools, the bimetal pops back down and continues the flow of electricity, allowing the heating element to heat again. This cycles on and off without the need for a computer or temperature gauge to regulate the temperature. It's pretty cool (hot)!
If a high limit thermostat starts to fail, it doesn't regulate the temperature of the heating element effectively. This allows the heating element to get hotter than it should and poses a danger to the appliance and to your house, but is usually safeguarded by the thermal fuse. Once the temperature of gets too hot for the thermal fuse, then it will break its continuity and the dryer will not be able to heat anymore. That's when you need a replacement. These only run around $5 to $10 USD. Not a very expensive way to keep your dryer working!
