I have never been and will never be an annotations girlie, but I absolutely love watching people go through their process. Really like how you do that with the legends in the front of the book. Hope you get a lot out of this mindful reading practice 🥰
This has been SO helpful and inspiring for me as annoying is something I want to do next year to improve my reviewing and book knowledge for discussions. Great video Tori!
I've been annotating since last year and love doing it depending on the books. Some books I prefer to just read through but some I can't help but add my two cents in, or write the translations of words I don't know or catch themes that are found throughout the book. Sometimes I'll just use tabs that match the book cover and a black thin pen, tabs, pen and neutral highlighters and sometimes I go all out and also sketch out an element from the page (like the dragon I sketched in So Let Them Burn when we meet our first dragon or the flower I sketched on the first page of Kindred.) Thanks for the eReader tips!! I'll be sure to use them!!
The neutral highlighters are my favorite! I was surprised how much I loved using them. I agree it totally depends on the books. I've read a couple since this video where I just wanted to read and ignore annotating.
Thank you for sharing your process! I'm still trying to figure out what works best for me. As of now I will only mark books with pencil until I know I'm going to keep it (5 star or other reason). I struggle with figuring out what I want to tab and found a few of your ideas interesting and worth trying out, specifically tabbing character intros, character arcs, and interactions between specific characters.
I love this video!!! Thanks for sharing this 🥰 I love seeing other people’s processes and hear their thoughts on how they annotate (or even read a book). I use the same tabs and love them!!! Also that they are slightly see through. Makes it so much easier. And I like your choice of highlighter. It’s really not intrusive. I have been using one that matches the color of my tab but I tend to use only one color per book (like you did before switching).
I like this process a lot more than how I was annotating Stormlight--I just had a few different color brush markers I used for each type of highlight, but they definitely bled through the pages a lot (I used quite bright colors) and I rarely wrote in the margins... But I do want to start making more little notes! I feel like whenever I read Malazan especially, it'll be very useful! Also love the idea of "tagging" eReader notes with a keyword--I almost never use that feature because sorting through them would be a nightmare, but that's a great idea!
Markers that bleed through are the worst, I hope you can find some good ones! I'm already noticing a big difference in my enjoyment and retention with annotating. Wishing you lots of awesome reads next year! Thanks for watching!
I have been doing the same thing with my bible study using colored pencils. The hardest part was coming up with the right categories for my legend at the front, but my daughter got me over that hurdle. After your last video got me thinking about annotating I started reading The Gallant by Janny Wurts on my Libra Color. I have been highlighting important plot points so far and plan to use a different color for meaningful quotes. After this video I think I will start highlighting humorous lines when I find them as well. I’m having fun seeing what works for me.
I've been doing annotation for many years. In college I never hesitated to write directly in textbooks. I don't mind writing, highlighting and underlining in mass markets either (Malazan I have trades and mass market for this purpose). I use Morandi tabs too for same reason as you. I use a Tombow 990 for highlighting which is probably close to your SAND. I use a .4 Pentel Arts Hybrid Technica pen for the notes (fast drying, non-smearing, waterproof, coffee proof black fine point). I have a Kobo Color Libra and also a Kindle. I have found that how much I annotate depends on the type of book. Heavy world building books and historical type books get the most. I don't annotate thrillers at all.
I do want to get some Tombow markers eventually, I've heard great things about them. I agree with you that the annotation changes a lot depending on the book you're reading. Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
I was having the same problem XD It's so helpful to have the notes and immediately know why I tabbed things! SO much easier to find references as well.
Only inserting this comment here b/c I said during your livestream I would get back to you about the Agatha Christie short story I was reading ("The Man from the Sea"). I'm harder to please than most. I felt it was well-written, but really more of a romance and I hoped for a mystery. So if I were compiling my own anthology it wouldn't make inclusion, but I can see why many like it. Have a nice day.
New subscriber here ❤. I love this way of annotating especially because I have ADHD also and find it difficult to retain information. In your annotations do you write a summary or a short reflection of sorts after each chapter or a chapter that you found important to the story?
Hi! Thanks so much for subscribing 🥰 Welcome to the channel! I haven’t been doing summaries yet, but I’m keeping that on deck as an option if I want to go deeper into my annotation process. Mostly because I know if I introduce too much too fast, my brain will go NOPE and the whole tower will crumble 😂😂
The only thing that I can say that you could change is how you place the tabs, like, make them stick out less. Mostly because when you place the book, the tabs will make it harder to push the book to the end of the shelve. This is just a me thing and maybe you love it the way you make it, if this is the case, don't listen to me! This is my way to do it, but I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do it, so do it as you like more! Also! For the tabs, there are so many on amazon that are 1000 tabs for maybe 2-5€ and for me they last so long. I bought a set on jaunuary and it still has some, but I'm planning on buying more for the new year
I have moved the tabs in a bit from how I started, but I also don't push my books all the way flush to the back of the bookcase, so that helps too. I love getting big sets of tabs! Amazon has a lot of great options, I agree.
@@ToriTalks2 I see! I prefer my books to be all to the back of the bookcase since I only have one, I kinda play tetris when I buy a new book to be able to fit it in lmao.
@@ToriTalks2 I wish I could afford more shelves, but until then, I'll keep playing tetris with my books (carefully tho, as much as I love the looks of a clearly loved book, I don't want to destroy the book)

Thank you Esmay! If it works for you, awesome, and if not, awesome. XD We're all just trying to find the reading experience that fits best.

I have never annotated but I do want to try but I also want to slow down and savor my reads more.
Also, love that beanie!
Thank you so much! It’s one of my favorites too 🥰 I wish you lots of savored reads in 2025!

I’m so glad some of them were helpful! Thanks so much for watching. I’m very picky about which books I’ll use permanent markings in too. 💜

Great video! It's always interesting to hear how other people take notes.
Thanks so much!
I only use tabs to mark smart, deep quotes but I also recommend transparent sticky notes. It easier to read through them on rereads🙂
I definitely want to try them soon!
Not made it to annotating yet but working towards something similar. Best wishes and happy reading!
Same to you! I hope you find a good process 🥰
Micron Pens!!! Love those!
They’re so good!!!

I love the color palette but I use so many tabs fir some books so I need the bright colors since they come in a bigger quantity
There are a whole bunch of color sets in this brand, I just started with a smaller number of them. I love having lots of options too! 🙌🏻
A great video, Tori!
Thank you so much!
OMG. I need this. I literally don't have a system. When I pick up my tabbed book, I would never have a clue why I put the sticker there. Silly me.
