- Regina Spektor singing "The Devil Come to Bethlehem". This is the only known recording from 8-19-2003.
**Note: The original recording is 5:26 but my conversion always finishes as 4:59. I can't seem to get it to keep those last few seconds in during youtube conversion. So it cuts off unfortunately here.
In any case you can find the full version of this song on the RespektOnline or ReginaSpektor.org fan sites to download.

Joseph and Mary are so bad
Kissin' in the park, kissin' in the park, kissin' in the park
He practices dentistry without a license
But it's alright 'cause Mary read the books and she's got his back
They're saving up for a trip to Frah-ah-ance
Gonna leave the baby with one of the in-laws
Just long enough to see the Eiffel Tower and back
Wear red scarf and booze on the airplane
The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark
Joseph and Mary are so sad
Sittin' in a park in Paris, France, reading the news, and it sure looks bad
A pile of empty postcards on their lah-ah-ap
Nothing bright to write and nothing good to send
The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark...
... ness is less frightening than
The lightness is less frightening than
The dark
Joseph and Mary are so dead
Honest, it's been years, it's been years, it's been many, many years
All their descendants are long buried and gone
And their closest blood relative works in a Philadelphia Sears
Walking on water in his own bathtub
Turning that water to wine
The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark...
... ness is less frightening than
The lightness is less frightening than
The darkness is less frightening than
The lightness is less frightening than
The dark
Well this is my belief: I am a relatively liberal Catholic, so I am open for all opinions, and the more percepectives you get, the stronger it should make your belief, if it is truly sincere. Regina is an amazing woman and her music is deep and usually heart-wrenching. She is free to share whatever view she has on the matter. Believers and non-believers alike are great people, it is people who force their beliefs onto others that aren't.
one of the best lyrics in the world!!!
what a jump she has made to light speed and cruise now . . composition is a brain buster, and this doll has all the good things we guys gush about. like einefee " great video posts "
I never thought of it like that. I always kind of took it as asking the question of what if Jesus was born today? How would Joseph and Mary be different? How would the life of one boy affect the life of so many? I don't see this piece as sacrilegious, but as a different and also beautiful version of what's already happened. To be honest, I love God and I like passionate church gospel about Him (especially Gregorian chant!); but Regina's music is what makes me feel closest to Him
In response to all the funny comments I once heard her say in a interview that half the time she subconciously writes songs - they flow out of her mind and even she doesnt know what she means for this I think that each song is unique and the interpretation is subjective to each individual listener.
...And yes, jonishep, the lines
"Sitting in a park in Paris, France, reading the news and it sure looks bad"
are from Joni Mitchell's song 'California'
Love the joni mitchell reference! :D Great song
i love her i love her i love her i love her i love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for posting!!!
She's a genius.
Oh my gosh, sneaky Joni Mitchell reference.
@Krakinerrr12 Samson's taken from the Book of Judges and Job from the Book of Job, both of which books belong to the Old Testament. Spektor seems to take a rather Gnostic attitude to religion, in that she picks stories out of the Bible and uses (and liberally interprets them) in her songs the same way she does with fairy tales. I think she's much deeper and intelligent than even her fans give her credit for. She knows religious texts are their for our enjoyment, not to thump people with
@jennysiita the best things about regina songs is that you dont have to 'get them right'. in fact, with regina spektor, there is no right. so whatever it means to you is what it is.
Thanks again for posting awesome videos!
omg she looks so pretty here!
Amazing!
omfg jonie mitchell
great greeat great
@LeaveN0Evidence it really makes you think right. wonderfully said:):):)

omg.
I love this song! trying to play it on the piano but can't find the right notes :( i wish there was a sheet but i guess not since this song is unique... :D luv regina
the two ppl who didnt like this are probbably married to each other and are not in love:):):):)
I'm not agreeing with the whole "stop picking on christianity" it makes me want to say "go listen to laughing with!" But yeah, I really like this song and the "I wonder if I can do this" at the beginning made me smile : )
oh I just found this and wanted to write my discover here. but somebody outran me :)
@christinasaenzx As an atheist, I can tell you we're not a unified religion with our own doctrine. Neither I nor most of the other atheists I've met have an argument for not believing in God-we just don't believe, period. It's a feeling, not a rational conviction.
There is actually another recording of this, from May 2003 :)
@rad941205 Sears is a department store. Its not a bad store, but its not very nice either. An ordinary store for ordinary people. :)
can you please send me this recording? I can't find it on limewire or anything. :)
I heard this song was called joseph and mary, which one is the proper title, or is there none, and its just what we fans call it?
But then if God does turn out to exist, what am I really losing rather than someone who believes in God and it turns out He doesn't?
I'm sorry to bother but I really don't get the meaning of the song.. I must really be missing something... can you explain?
@Krakinerrr12 The Christian Old Testament is the collection of the most central Jewish religious scriptures. Christianity is regarded by its adherents as a continuation and universilisation of Judaism. Jesus Christ himself is chronicled to be of Jewish descent and faith
i love it but im confused about what shes talking about is she downing religion or is there a hidden message?
err, i love regina, but can someone explain me the meaning of this song, i can't quite get it :(
Regina played at Sin-e??? As in the place Jeff Buckley performed at?
The devil has a bible, yeah! Probably true (regards to the church). Which one of the 300 versions he may have?
@xxdiogenescynicxx wasn't mary jewish? =S so what was she
what's sears?
I'm Catholic but I don't agree with everything the church or bible says. I think religion is about creating your own ideas. Whether you are atheist, catholic, whatever it is- it's up to you. I have faith simply because it's something I feel in my heart that's true. I get frustrated when christians try to feed people the bible and force them to believe in what they just don't want to. Believe what you choose to believe, it's your life, your soul. In the very end, we'll figure out who was right.
....but if I don't believe in God then why would any of this scare me?
I think you should just give up in this if you plan on converting me because it is never going to happen
I dont think faith is supposed to be a logical bet. Do you think God, if He exists, would rather you believe because it's the safest bet, then not believe? I think He'd consider both as equally bad. At least a nonbeliever is being honest to themselves and God.
...but I don't think He will come back, so your argument is irrelevant
It can't explain first cause. First cause is a completely metaphyisical subject that can't possiablely be explained or understood by any human logic or science.
@LeaveN0Evidence Watch the movie Zeitgeist ... Jesus didnt even exist ha
You're sorry that I don't have a religion that I support? You're sorry that I'm not ruled by fear and driven by superstition? Well I'm certainly not sorry. I am a proud Atheist and it is definitely going to stay that way. Oh, I'm sorry that I assumed that if you like her music then you would be a fan of the amazing woman who creates it. I am such an idiot.
@eisleylover53 not awsome, fuckin genius.:D x
Well I don't believe in Satan either
