  • regina spektor - The Devil Come To Bethlehem (Live)
    Recorded: 19th August 2003 Sin-é
    Lyrics:
Joseph and Mary are so bad
Kissin' in the park, kissin' in the park, kissin' in the park
He practices dentistry without a license
But it's alright 'cause Mary read the books and she's got his back
They're saving up for a trip to Frah-ah-ance
Gonna leave the baby with one of the in-laws
Just long enough to see the Eiffel Tower and back
Wear red scarf and booze on the airplane
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark
Joseph and Mary are so sad Sittin' in a park in Paris, France, reading the news, and it sure looks bad
A pile of empty postcards on their lah-ah-ap
Nothing bright to write and nothing good to send
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark... ... ness is less frightening than
The lightness is less frightening than The dark
Joseph and Mary are so dead
Honest, it's been years, it's been years, it's been many, many years
All their descendants are long buried and gone
And their closest blood relative works in a Philadelphia Sears
Walking on water in his own bathtub
    Turning that water to wine
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
With a Bible and an alarm clock
    The Devil come to Bethlehem
And he ain't afraid of the dark... ... ness is less frightening than
The lightness is less frightening than The darkness is less frightening than The lightness is less frightening than The dark

I just realized her sneaky little Joni Mitchell reference
"Sitting in a park in Paris, France, reading the news and it sure looks bad. They won't give peace a chance, that was just a thing some of us had." - Joni Mitchell, California

Reminds me a lot of Samson. The failure of some divine mission due to pursuing love or something else human. Regina abstains from any sort of judgment in either. Love it.

It's fucked up her B-side album the Icelandic guy assembled is her best album. It's better than "Soviet Kitsch." Who knew what stupid shit people were saying in 2003? Maybe even right (you'd get a bigger audience if you weren't so crazy?")

This was a from a few days ago, I'm studying abroad in France. Me and my friends bought a couple of bottles of wine and went to a park and drank. They drink cause they feel alive, I drink cause I feel gone. There was one point of the night my friends asked what the statue on the side of the wall was. It was a statue of Mary holding Jesus and Joseph kneeling at her side. I was raised super catholic, but Im not anymore. My friends made some jokes of going to hell, but I looked up at their faces, and felt so, other, I couldn't explain it. I felt connected to mary and joseph, the real people not the saints I was raised on. They were just kids, Jesus was just a kid, told by his mother to turn water to wine. There's other things I felt and noticed that night, but when I finally got home I put music on shuffle and this came on. I can't explain how eerrie it was, this song describes the entire night, that other feeling I had. I've been in the darkness, but it'swhere I've been for so long

@@lilipad90 I can somehow feel what you described there... stories are much personal, they stay & grow with you. I'm not "religious" anymore either, there are just feelings & connections that go beyond names religious icons, & worships. Somethings are just about being too human. If that makes any sense.

I know you asked like 6 years ago, but I feel the need to reply with what the song means to me. It's like growing up you're life had a purpose, a destiny, like Mary and Joseph who are viewed as so perfect and holy, we've forgotten they were real people. An unmarried woman who was pregnant and afraid, a man who had no idea what was going on but had to trust and provide. For me, as someone who was told I was special and had a purpose and was going to do great things, and was raised very religious. Now I'm not so religious and I'm just trying to exist, real people don't have a destiny, and it's freeing to know we're all real people trying our best. We don't have to be a mythical perfection, we're all just human, surviving, and everyone who was and will be is the same. But don't think thinks pessimistic, it is freeing, we can just, be. No expectations.
