Wonderful encounter with a wild margay cat

- While staying at Arenal Observatory Lodge in Costa Rica we were hoping to see this elusive small cat. And we weren't disappointed when it turned up outside the staff canteen one morning. However we didn't anticipate it would be sitting above us when we went to look for it! Such a beautiful cat with magnificent markings, and well known to the cook, it would seem! Although it hadn't been seen for 3 weeks before our arrival.

This cat must be habituated to receiving food here: the Arenal Observatory Lodge is the only place I've seen one of these cats in person and it walked right into the dining area at meal time. I suspect (and this video seems to confirm) the staff feed it regularly.
What a wonderful little cat!! I want to come to Arenal Observatory, Costa Rica, immediately - but what does the observatory observe? Stars or cats?? I love cats!
I believe that before it became a hotel, it was a site for making scientific observations of the Arenal Volcano.
They make look cute; but these cats will chase a monkey through the trees like a squirrel.

Pity the staff feeds a wild animal. I enjoy seeing a beautiful wild animal as any other, but to habituate wild animals to food is a risk in my opinion. And generally not motivated by the wellbeing of the animal, but rather because of something we want. I think that leaving an animal live their life without us luring or habituating it to food, shelter or affection, is a good way to ensure the best life for an animal.
They have done so so that visitors to the observatory learn about conservation
They Are actually pretty dangerous, but really cute. They carry different kinds of diseases

I saw one with some poachers once, they had drugged it I guess and were going to sell it to the wildlife trade. It was lying on the ground where they were sitting, by the side of the road. When I approached they looked jumpy and said its sleeping, but obviously wanted me to move on.
That is sad - they are just so beautiful and should not be destined for the pet trade 😥
