  • Elena Castejon tells about the Margay (Leopardus wiedii) at Parque Municipal Summit. This young Margay (4 months old) arrived in the wildlife rescue center after being separated from her mom to be kept as a pet. The mother was killed, and when the young arrived at Summit it was drenched in its mothers blood. Needless to say wild animals like this shouldn't be kept as a pet. As Elena explains, taking care of wildlife is "a sad privilege. We love what we do, but we wished we didn't have to do it."

That's incorrect, Clouded Leopards can also turn their back feet backwards to climb down trees.

@@lb540 She didn't say lesser cat though, she said the Margay is the only cat who can turn their back feet backwards to climb down trees, which is incorrect.

Your kidding. Wow lucky. It’s very very very important this breed eats well. I saw a video about it and they said never ever feed it It low cost diet, no soy etc. please please research exactly what to feed it. If they don’t eat properly they get sick and die very easily. Where did you get it?

@@Mytube777 Yeah, soy products are really bad for trying to feed animals because it can be harder to tell if they're getting enough of what they need. People need to take a stand against soy products for animals.

Please, don’t purchase wild animals like these as a pet. It is illegal to keep them, and causes a large threat for the wild animal. As is explained in this video, the margay breeds very slowly. Any baby’s taken from the wild decreases the number of animals in the wild, leading animals like these to extinction. If you want a beautiful cat, please go to your nearest animal shelter.

Hello Dan, hopefully you payed attention to the video! I (luckily!!) don't own this (once wild) Margay, since it's a very fragile species. Margays are undergoing a continuing decline in much of their natural range: illegal hunting for domestic markets or for the underground skin trade has been reported to be a continuing a problem in some areas (www.iucnredlist.org/details/11511/0). This is exactly the kind of thing that got this cutie into trouble: her mother was poached so she could be sold as an illegal pet :(
I strongly advise you to look into regular cat species as a pet: a margay is a truly wild animal and is not suitable as a pet at all! Unfortunately this cute head might suggest otherwise, but once it's grown to full size it's not a cute playmate anymore, but a wild cat that has the potential to harm you. Cats like these belong in the nature, where they can be the fully awesome creatures they are, without having to worry about harming people or getting malnourished :)

In western markets, most small cat species (and the big ones) sold into the trade are born in captivity.
Most that are captured for the illegal trade are sold domestically.

Ien my mom wound up with a cat in Belize that we are pretty certain has margay ancestry. We call him asshole cat. And even though he’s mostly of domestic ancestry, it’s still very very obvious that he’s a wild cat.

@@williamjordan5554 Try telling Vegans that. They still haven't got the memo and have put canines and felines in danger for their madness. They are bonafide carnivores. Period.
Now I won't suggest animals are so cut and dry, sometimes it may benefit them to dabble on the other side out of necessity, but if they're on a strict diet of something they really shouldn't be, then they can become anaemic very quick. We're not talking about a switch to omnivore over millions of years, they're just chucking them on these diets against their will. Omnivores like us need to be careful, too, because too much of one and not the other can also lead to issues.
I know cows in Australia, I shit you not, have begun to eat snakes, although I'm unsure of how common it is. They've started to eat animals in the area because apparently Australian grass doesn't have enough nutrients that they need, so they're eating animals as a last resort, not that they are particularly fond of doing so.
