    I have a lot of my grandfather's photos from WW2. Planes, soldiers, landscapes. I'm going to go through them again and find the most interesting ones and sell them. Thanks for the video, Don!

    I collect old photos, so I'd never be able to sell any.
    One of my favorite categories is hidden mother photos. Not usually valuable, but eerily interesting.

    I've been going through all my "not relative" photos, and have found some quite good ones. Thanks for all the tips. I do have one question you might have an answer for...what's the best way to flatten a photo that's been rolled up...these are about 8X10s. thanks

    Photos are one of my fav things to buy I have literally thousands to sort through, scan and list. They tend to be very cheap, especially at auction. I look for all the things you have mentioned but also scouts, guides and nurses. Earlier this year I bought approx 300 hundred amateur photos from the mid 60s of UK railway stations that were closed down by Dr Beeching, they sold pretty quick. I have an album of about 80 photos from the 1st D Day memorial (late 45) with all kinds of military vehicles and the like. I'm still researching these.It makes it so much easier doing research if there is information on the back of the photo.

    Another great video. Even though I don't sell this stuff, it's interesting to watch - like a faster paced Antiques Roadshow. That second to last photo would look great scanned in and then blown up to a poster.

    Photos with weird exposures and sunspots sell for hundreds as art. Newer ones too if the image is interesting. A 1970s color photo of a young black gentleman wearing a plaid suit and standing in front of a green Cadillac recently sold at auction for over $500 on eBay. I save 90% of the photos I pick. Just love them.

      What types of places do you guys source old things? I’m still so frustrated about not having any good connections. I believe Don actually asks people like the veterans marching in the parade. I guess that’s the way to do it. Thrift shops are very low on truly old items and antique malls are usually market value. How do we find old horders like on American Pickers 😀

    Hi Don. I have a whole lot of photos that I've kept for years. They are all from the Canada public Archives and I received them from someone who worked at CBC here in Canada. Many are radio stations, sound equipment, first satellite for home televisions, movie stars, some war time photos, I even have a couple of first transmission across the Atlantic photos with Marconi in them. I hate to bother you, and I am definitely going to become a patron of yours because you have helped me more than any other UA-cam channel. Anyway, how do I advertise these on my Ebay?

    I purchased a cache of slides from the 50s-60s of various California landmarks (i.e. Rose Bowl Parade, Pacific Ocean Pier).
    Are these worth as much (or more?) as photographs??

    Hi, did they make shiny surface cards that weren't original photos pre 1915? I really am hitting roadblocks everywhere with my titanic postcard. I have cards with the same back but different front sell for over $1000 but I cannot find my card nowhere.. I believe it was made in 1912 it has a real shiny surface but has typed writing underneath not the scratched on white writing. Everybody I have asked/showed said they have never seen this type of postcard but I am really new to postcard collecting so not much experience

    WOW, I knew old pics can be valuable BUT had no idea even basic ones. My family opened 1 of the 1st studios in Chicago & besides random ppls family pics we have mobsters,mayors,1st chicago baseball team ntm basically the city as it grew , the 1st polar bear in a zoo etc then as decades go by cool pics w?richard pryors 1st stand up on chicago theater sign, 1st indian motorcycle club then all the bikers and hot rod clubs..even pics from an uncle dropping atomic bomb over japan and my fav are from my dads cousin eugene cernan he took on the moon of earth on the last moon landind. Guess i should start digging them ot. would ebay be appropriate if pics are 1 of a kind like on the moon or al capone cooking dinner or an auction 4 a huge lot. iguess all those silver plate negs are valuable too. thanks 4 vid

    I have an original photo and negative of an auto race in California circa 1930 with a custom race car careening around a dirt track and kicking up dust. The background is spectators and palm trees. Spectacular, in my opinion. The image framed on my wall is from the negative. What do you think of the idea of having more prints made and selling them as new prints from an old negative? And, of course, I can sell the original, but I hate to part with it. Love your show, by the way.

    Another question, I have original negatives from the 40's and 50's that were my dads. Can I print some of the images instead of selling the original negatives? I have a $1000 Nikon scanner that does an amazing job scanning the old negatives and make original looking prints. They just wouldn't look old printed today. Thank you Tom

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  6 років тому +1

      As long as you either own the rights to them directly, or you dad has given you the rights to print them. We print, and sell some images that we own the rights to from time to time. You can though have them printed by a printing company on matte vintage style stock that looks remarkable close to the vintage ones. There are a half a dozen or so internet based printing companies that do that. We have worked with half of them with good success.

      My father passed away when I was a teenager, and I never paid attention to tens of thousands of 35mm slides he took, but after helping my mom clean the attic out a few years back we found a small fortune in those slides with some selling in the $600 plus a piece range. They can hold some big money. We do print some from his collection as we kept thousands of them just for that purpose.

    I have some photos that have no information written on them or any clues in the photo. However the photos were inside a developing envelope. the developing co. letterhead. unfortunately the written name, address is worn off. the only thing that I make out was the year 1943. How can I research? Can I still list photos on ebay with little or no info. and how would you title / describe under?

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  6 років тому

      Content itself is key to photo values. If the images have cars, nice street scenes, occupational activities, transportation such as trains, ships, airplanes they can sell regardless of who, what or where. It really just depends on the images themselves.

  • @tpmarkham

    Hi Don, You mentioned you can find who owned those old vehicles from their license plates? Is there some database that has that information somewhere?

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  6 років тому +1

      Yes from what I have been told there is. I don't personally look them up, but I know several buyers who do. Our state DMV site also has historical info on the plates themselves, such as the makers, and samples of every single plate design that has been used in the state since they were first issued back at the turn of the 19th century.

      Thanks. On that photo the condition, and the clarity effect the price. The size also plays into it as well. There were also a lot of people present during the surrender so there are quite a few images from the event. We aren't listing it any time soon, but when we do will will post it.

      Also the karma involved and swastikas can't sell on eBay. I just passed on a 1934 leather bound Nazi propaganda book. Filled with postcards. Hitler and all his henchmen plus military scenes, planes and ships. The second half was all famous German art and artists from the past. Similar books were $1200 online.... I passed for $50. I decided not to make money from such monstrosity. Besides I didn't like the idea of passing it on to someone who might be a neo- Nazi.

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  6 років тому +2

      It of course depends on ones views on the subject. We look at everything from a historical point, but wont sell certain items directly related to some topics. Swastikas though can be sold on eBay it just depends on the object it is on. Postcards, stamps, and photos can be sold on eBay, as can money, and coins. The swastika itself is actually a peace symbol that has been used by many cultures for centuries. The Native American's even used it for untold ages prior to the symbol being used by a twisted regime.

    The most lucrative ones are old photos showing the gay scene, lifestyles and/or couples. Obviously, they do not need to be vulgar or lascivious.
