So chief, we gonna talk about the Raven Queen, or nah? From what I understand, she basically did what Karsus tried (albeit with a good few strings attached) through High Magic.
@@michaelfapgod4598 Well, she was successful- at least to a degree. Although I don't think it's unfair to say that the being that came out of the spell was somewhat removed from the woman that went into it. Then again, I understand that she was always something of a desperate figure, so perhaps the change was less severe than one might think. Either way, I can't imagine that the leap from mortality to godhood leaves one unchanged.
It also depends on the setting. The early version of her, seen in the Dawn War pantheon, died when the ritual failed and ended up with the then God of Death and the Dead named Nerull. He had some major power, seeing he decided if the other gods got petitioners at all and was also... not a nice god, father of necromancy and all around pretty utilitarian in his evil. Like letting fiends who serve him torture his petitioners in horrible ways, so the fiends don't get too grumpy, because the petitioners were dead anyway and just return to him if they died again... Then the woman who would become the Raven Queen died from ritual sabotage, ended up in Pluton with Nerull, was still bright and defiant (unlike the rest of the broken souls) and he fell in love, made her his queen, and shared his power with her. She didn't like being a trophy wife in torture land, so she figured out how he drew power from the dead in his realm, turned that off for him and all towards herself and proceeded to gank the shit out of him as all the petitioners were set free and put their faith in her. Then she took his place, erased both their names, and the other gods intervined so she was no longer in charge of all the dead and just got to keep Death (because having one god in charge of all the souls was not great for any other god) and she became the Raven Queen. Eventually she moved to the Shadowfell instead, because Pluton is not a nice place. Later on she got Winter as part of her portfolio by helping Corellon kill/banish some evil ice godess and I don't recall how she picked up Fate but I think it was something similar... she is a greedy god who likes adding to her portfolio. Nerull also remains, sort of, in her main temple in the Shadowfell as a consecrated pool of ice-cold blood her priests or people wanting to know stuff about fate can immerse themselves in, which can become addictive and will eventually kill any who keeps doing it as they simply lose all will to live and die of apathy, no longer wanting to eat, drink, sleep, breathe or really anything needed to stay alive... She was pretty cool even before the 5E remix, but I like the Forgotten Realms version.

@@Elluem 75 to 100 years before you manage to complete even an introductory course into High Magic? Not that big a deal when your race can live anywhere from 700 to 1,000 years. But for the short lived races like Humans and whatnot, they'd be too old and senile by the time they got to that point!
In the book Elminster in Myth Drannor the way the creating of the mythal was described made it seem like it was done using elven high magic, including the linking of beings, minds, and needing to impart some of their essences... that would somewhat mean that Elminster, a human, did take part in elven high magic, and he was being trained in their magics as well through various elven mentors under the instructions of Mystra.
Elven propaganda. It has nothing to do with Elven culture, as there have been human cultures with the same values. They just fear humans gaining the same power. The reason they can do the magic this way is the ability to link minds. Which means all that is required, is psychic ability, or some other means of linking minds temporarily in order to do the spells. High magic isn't special to only elves, which is why they keep it so secret. They *_know_* that others could do it if they knew how, otherwise they wouldn't fear the knowledge getting out.

The series that you have created is amazing to me. Every time I am stuck in my homebrew campaign I come to your channel for inspiration and each time I get something new out of it.
It is most satisfying to look upon the pieces of art in the background of these videos and identify which (non-FR, non-DnD) settings they are taken from. The book cover at 9:22 was one hell of a surprise.
It's always so hard for me to watch these videos, because I get so caught up in what Mr Rhexx is saying, and how fascinating it all is, that my mind starts to race and my imagination sets ablaze, so I get distracted and miss something!
Mr. Rhexx, thank you so much for presenting all this lore in such an interesting, engaging way! I'm a new player to D&D, and this lore helps me understand and immerse myself in this new world I've found. I'm glad I have a good guide who knows his stuff! The use of art and music is really enjoyable too!
Well, the ban on high tier spells was never implemented for the Feywild, which means that Fey type creatures can have access to spells beyond 9th level, if the DM feels like implementing them into the setting. ;)
Elminster Aumar, in the book Elminster in Myth Drannor, took part in casting Elven High Magic to create a mythal - if I recall correctly :) I haven't read that book in like 20 years though... Time to go dig it out!
Wait all the elves are connected by magic and feel eachother's pain? Does that mean one could cause the elves to die from a broken heart by amplifying the tortured screams of enough elves to the point that they get depressed? Purely for scientific reasons I swear.
Facinating ; however, beware of the Fell, the Shadow Weave, and Spells of Dark Corruption .. AKA the Black Atlantaen majicks from the Darkhold Scrolls..
William Blowers questions of such detail and nature, followed by “for science” (because when was science “ever” used for bad~?) are why they don’t get answers.
I feel I could manipulate how long it takes for a character to learn the weave by making clones of that character and connecting them through mind gems.
@@asimovvomisa4040 In concept, basically. But instead of using magic based entities, I would use a method of gathering the remains of corpses and stitching together their bodies whilst "infecting" it with my character's essence, and affixing the entity with mind gems that would be fused with their brain, thus mapping an exact blueprint of my mind directly into theirs, then using the flesh doll as a more personal reflection of my character, and thus my will would be theirs yet independent in its own. So yes like shadow clones except permanent and each with their own abilities.
Yeah, what's to stop An artificer from Any species from simply creating magic items. in order to achieve all of the necessary conditions in order to cast Elvish high magic Even if they aren't an elf themselves.
I seem to remember in the Forgotten Realms series there was a Book ( Elminster in Myth Drannor by Ed Greenwood) about the creation of the Mythal in Myth Drannor. There were Non-Elves included in the ritual for that one. Granted a Chosen of Mystra, the Magister, a Half-elf Archmage, and if I remember correctly a LeShay. None the less it does show that at least some very select few of other races that have ways of gaining extremely long lives are capable of learning the connections to allow them to participate in a Myriad level High magic spell as a spell caster in the second rank, or in the case of Elminster, as a free connection traveling along the web of magic looking for malicious intent and protecting the casters.
Elven propaganda. It has nothing to do with Elven culture, as there have been human cultures with the same values. They just fear humans gaining the same power. The reason they can do the magic this way is the ability to link minds. @@Recoil1808 Honestly it isn't even just "tend" to teach elves, they "only" teach elves. The only exception being a Chosen of Mystra for obvious reasons. Teaching a non-elf, even a *_half-elf_* is punished by death for both the master and the student. Because a half-elf is too tied to humans and may give the knowledge away. Hell, for a long time it was a secret they even kept from other races of *_elves_* and was one of the major reasons for the Crown Wars. The Drow started it partly because they wanted the secrets of High Magic and the "High Elves" as they called themselves at the time, refused to share. Incidentally, it is why they used to call themselves High Elves, because only their race could work High Magic.
Yep all that "elves are better then everyone else in every aspect" is pure propaganda. All they are doing is group ritual magic. It's so powerful because the Elves have ridiculously long natural lives to research and push it to that level while leveraging and incorporating their nature sense into it. Humans on the other hand need to resort to extreme measures to extend their lives culminating in some sort of undead existence, that lone makes mastering such complex ritual magic difficult. In theory five arch liches could get together, completely trust each other and have a group of fanatical worshipers to cast the same magic, the probability of that happening would be zero. It's the same reason Dragons don't do high magic even with them being far more attuned to magic and nature then elves.
@@palladin9479 Well archliches are the good ones (or at a bare minimum non-evil), so most likely they wouldn't have too many worshippers in the first place.
The way they learn high magic actually sounds like a good meditative exercise irl. That would really elevate your perception, senses, and awareness of your environment around you.
You really hit the mark around 23:00 in that this is a framework, more like a setting than a point by point campaign. It specifically states that they can go months (ingame) between major points in the story. What I did was made use of resources like the Forgotten Realms Wiki and Candlekeep and the Forgotten Realms Library websites as well as digging through TOD to research all points between parnast and waterdeep. Sometimes I even found lore dating back to 2nd and 3rd edition to help give me an idea for the history of the towns. For my family I started them off as being from the Dalelands and one of the characters is a wizard who was told to head to waterdeep first then to candlekeep to expand his spellbook. Then brought them across the desert using the DDAL5-02 "The Black Road" which lead into Parnast and DDAL5-01 "Treasure of the Broken Hoard". They just finished that part up. Now they are heading to waterdeep. Along the way they have been seeing and will continue to see all sorts of signs that the Giants are VERY active. I premade several things from the 'random wilderness encounters', particularly the non-combat things for the party to stumble across that also helped re-enforce the giant storyline. That route from Parnast to waterdeep has several points along it that have encounters already in it and it it will be easy to create something in waterdeep that points them to Goldenfields. Though if they prefer to stick in waterdeep we could easily transition to WD-DH and come back to the SKT stuff afterwards (though I'd need to scale up the difficulty for their level). The flexibility of this campaign is what really appealed to me as a DM as I sometimes have a hard time grasping premade NPCs and If I make my own with my own subplots my improve skills are far better. If you want to run LMOP first you could easily point them to Triboar from Phandalin (p.231 has ideas) Anytime the adventures stopped in a town/village that doesn't have much info I strongly recommend using resources like LoreSmyth's Remarkable Inns and Remarkable Shops. There's lots of resources out there to create small things in these towns. Simply the people in that area seeing giant movement that leads/points to the nearest story plot point. It doesn't have to be a fully scripted encounter. I love the advice I got before i started DMing to pregen several NPCs with basic tasks/jobs that you can just drop into any village. Heck you could premake a couple villages in generic terms so no matter where your party goes you can just change the flavor text and it fits wherever they go so you're not caught flatfooted. One thing to do is to talk with the party at the end of each session and get the general idea of where they plan to go so you can be prepared. In the last campaign i finished as a player our DM found out REAL fast that she needed to ask us this, even in roundabout ways, what our plans were so she could prepare. More than once we all Ziged when she expected us to ZAG and was coming up with things on the fly. As a DM don't hesitate to either slow the party down with random encounters or just end a session early if they are heading into an area you're not prepared for. That being said we haven't finished the rest of the campaign so I'm not sure how my players will enjoy the rest of it. I'm just in the planning stages for most of it.
Mabye after this series you could do a video or video's about the orc's. I always hear about them and there legendary horde's that once sweept the lands but, i don't really know much about them. Absolutly love your video's btw.
7:28. Hey! You included a picture of the half elf assassin Leesil , and Magiere, the damphire in your video! Awesome! The Noble Dead is a great series, it puts a different spin on elves.
Oh man, the meditation described in this is really similar to how my Half-Drow archmage sees the world. I wanted to play a character that, like me, is neurodivergent, and one of her strengths is that she's keenly aware of the patterns in nature, which in turn led to her being preternatural when it came to learning magic, to the point where in game she's been described as pretty much having detect magic always on. This video makes me feel real good :)
This is completely compatible with my old rules for Loom of Magus (my campaign universe) rules. All magic above level 9 are 10th level spells. It's a division by 0 thing at that point, level 10 is infinite potential. The level 10 spells with a single caster have a cost, be it casting time to infirmity to sacrifice. Level 10 spells of high effect have lower costs if the power is shared by other spell casters. Elfin High Magic never did the single-caster 10th level spell godlike ability on these. They just did the 10th level spells softly. By the way, that whole becoming the god of magic as the avatar that shattered the Forgotten Realms universe... in Loom of Magus, it would be classified as an unknown cost experimental 10th level spell that the first casting revealed the cost in casting it. 10th level spells = infinite potential in Loom of Magus.
I want to know how possible it is to turn yourself from a human to a warforged. Also, how possible it is to be immortal as a warforged. What would stop them from continually repairing and replacing parts of their body?
@@Elluem Yes, humans (and any other race you choose can be "warforged." Basically, that's the Anvilwrought supernatural gift (feat) from MOoT. I don't know about Toril having it, but homebrew is whatever you make it. Primus & Moradin seem like they could possibly warforge/anvilwrought someone.
This video finally helped me to understand the severety of the transgration and punishment of John Irenicus from Baldurs Gate 2. The context is much appreciated.
This video got me thinking about hags and covens. Since hags only gain their greatest power when working together in unison as a coven, are they tapping into some type of high magic?
In 2e Cormanthor supplement, the High Moor was created by elves using High Magic to destroy dark elves during the Crown Wars on a Miyertar (a dark elf city) it is/was known as “The Dark Disaster”. Good video btw!
I would have loved if you showed us some examples of what High Magic can do. I know you mentioned some in previous videos, but would be great if it was all here in one place. Other than that, this was an awesome video to watch! Love your channel!
Those last 3 episodes are amazing =) I play a bit of RP in World of Warcraft and elfs there feel so shallow and their background not clarified compared to this
MrRhexx you've talked about how elves are seeking to return to their pantheon, but how does this affect Baelnorn? Or will that be covered when you do liches?
High magic - true magic. Something I would love to be able to do in one campaign somehow.... teach me, master!!! Edit: good bews and bad news. Good news - it's possible-ish. Bad news - it needs a stupidly high level of backstory and an age requirement as well as the fact that no DM would accept making me this OP, along with casting time and the fact it's group magic.... yeouch, that's a lot.
Honestly liking these ideas, very smart. About the Drow one, though... Maybe it could be a drow redemption campaign as Drows seek to reconnect with heaven or the reincarnation cycle that they lost so long ago... (Or just use that as an excuse when the party inevitably seduces a high-ranking drow because why not and starts dabbling in the politics of the divine. Because let's be honest when has a campaign not been derailed entirely??) Ooh! I got one. How about a defensive battle where we need to hold back the enemies long enough for the high mages of the elf kingdom we're protecting to cast some all-powerful spell that stops the enemies... pretty much just a siege-type protection quest!
I was watching Witcher and LoTR videos and this video popped up in my reccomended. It took me few minutes to realize this is about D&D. Funny how it could actually fit into both Witcher and LoTR universe :)
Hey Rhexx. let me start off with, I love your videos and how you do them! Literally the best way to get information without reading is this and not jsut that, the narrtion is amaizng! I was wondering if you could do a video about bugbears and even goblina but mainly bugbears... I would love that.
Imagine in 20.000 years from now, people uncover this video in an archeological find and then watch it. They don't know what D&D is. They will think people of our time were able to use magic, cast spells, etc. UA-cam as the phylactery of D&D.
Concept: Rary's Telepathic Bond. It lasts for one hour. 5th level. could likely be used to connect human wizards to a single elf who would connect them to the ritual. Alternatively, Mind flayers could likely achieve similar effects.
Except mind flayers see arcane magic as an abomination(a perversion of true psionic power) and any member of the colony that even dares dabble in the arcane tends to be hunted and killed on the spot(see the Alhoon).
This is quite enlightening when considering the current Critical Role Bell's Hells campaign and the possible objectives and motivations of Ludinus Da'leth.
Another amazing video sir! Many likes and thumbs up! Question, would this work with a sorcerer? And how does the weave come into play when a Sorcerer can spend their own Sorcerer Points as if it was weave points?
For the elves, Friendship is *High* Magic. Reading about this, and seeing the resemblance between the city on the Spelljammer and the city of Canterlot, along with the Spaarkil who died to make the Spelljammer after singing to younger races in the stars, all contributed to my homebrew setting. It’s a mix between edgy post-multiverse apocalypse (complete with dead or weakened gods and lots of plot threads about their canon failings/downfalls), and wholesome points of light amidst dangerous wastelands, city dungeons, extradimensional mountains, the graveyards and inheritors of the Feywild and many other settings... And the occasional FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC reference and lore tidbit to amuse some players, and leave others in tears. Don’t take it too seriously, even most of the gods and dragons forgot about the pony stuff. Have fun and don’t be afraid to go big and wild with your games! For me, unicorns and ki-rin and their kin just have some seriously tragic Deep Lore that many elves and surviving gods still fight to recover. The “Misty Isles” was the world where Corellon grew up as an elf before the Dawn War and Titan War. etc. ;) EDIT: mustn’t forget the flammable rainbow Phlogiston. That’s paralleled by the flammable (and ultra-spicy) liquid rainbows of Equestria.

Hello there! Very good job with your videos, I find them quite complete and interesting. However I have a question about something you say. You said that humans cant perform rituals of high magic but isnt it true that Elminster participated on the creation of the mythral of myth drannor?
So you're telling me that I know how to do elven high magic? "How does river move?" "Fluids molecular structure is not rigid, and as they happen to have high surface tension, they pull on each other, creating a situation where they can flow when force is applied." "Why does the river move?" "Because the curvature of spacetime creates an apparent force which makes objects fall down, while matter repells matter, resulting in things moving down until they touch something. Combined with the physical properties of liquids, this makes them flow downhill." "What forces are at play within it?" "Strong, Weak, Electro-magnetic, gravitational." "How can one shift its movements?" "Many ways! Magneticaly, mechanically, geologically... Any specific category? We'll be here all day."

They *_know_* that others could do it if they knew how, otherwise they wouldn't fear the knowledge getting out.
humans are capable of ritual magic. the elves would prefer they didn't know that

The series that you have created is amazing to me. Every time I am stuck in my homebrew campaign I come to your channel for inspiration and each time I get something new out of it.
Dude I just caught you. Good time too because I've been enjoying this series so much.
Elves seem to have an "in" with the higher powers of the multi-verse. Are there any other contenders for that title or are they unique?
Gith, kinda
aasimar wich is an angelic race
Corey Easton depends. Do Devils count as the higher powers?
Well, the ban on high tier spells was never implemented for the Feywild, which means that Fey type creatures can have access to spells beyond 9th level, if the DM feels like implementing them into the setting. ;)
@@Nyrufa i thought it wasnt a plane thing and was a person thing

I really think a What They Dont Tell You About Humans would be amazing and interesting
Wait all the elves are connected by magic and feel eachother's pain? Does that mean one could cause the elves to die from a broken heart by amplifying the tortured screams of enough elves to the point that they get depressed?
Purely for scientific reasons I swear.

William Blowers questions of such detail and nature, followed by “for science” (because when was science “ever” used for bad~?) are why they don’t get answers.

I feel I could manipulate how long it takes for a character to learn the weave by making clones of that character and connecting them through mind gems.
Shadow clones from Naruto ?
@@asimovvomisa4040
In concept, basically.

Elf mindflayers
Which means all that is required, is psychic ability, or some other means of linking minds temporarily in order to do the spells.
High magic isn't special to only elves, which is why they keep it so secret. They *_know_* that others could do it if they knew how, otherwise they wouldn't fear the knowledge getting out.
@@JamesJNothingIsTooSensitive Hence why they only tend to teach elves and go full Terminator when someone TRIES getting info they shouldn't.
Maybe I should have my Elven characters try out this training just for those benefits
Your videos are so informative! I keep learning so much cool stuff to incorporate into my world and campaigns! Thank you so much!!!

Both hags and elves are fey creatures so this seems pretty likely to me.
I like the idea of numerous different ways of using the weave, rather than just the standard pluck theory.

An Elf centric Campaign set during the Crown Wars or something, could work really well for that once it gets high level
It'd be interesting to see a villain somehow exploit this magic though.
Have a campaign arc about stopping a drow kingdom from using this
Honestly liking these ideas, very smart.
Because let's be honest when has a campaign not been derailed entirely??)
Ooh! I got one. How about a defensive battle where we need to hold back the enemies long enough for the high mages of the elf kingdom we're protecting to cast some all-powerful spell that stops the enemies... pretty much just a siege-type protection quest!
Rairarku what would you even do with all that power in first place?
These magic videos are great I hope you can do more of them.

Imagine in 20.000 years from now, people uncover this video in an archeological find and then watch it. They don't know what D&D is. They will think people of our time were able to use magic, cast spells, etc. UA-cam as the phylactery of D&D.
I see a Name of The Wind reference, I like the video.
The “Misty Isles” was the world where Corellon grew up as an elf before the Dawn War and Titan War. etc. ;)
EDIT: mustn’t forget the flammable rainbow Phlogiston. That’s paralleled by the flammable (and ultra-spicy) liquid rainbows of Equestria.

"Fluids molecular structure is not rigid, and as they happen to have high surface tension, they pull on each other, creating a situation where they can flow when force is applied."
"Why does the river move?"
"Because the curvature of spacetime creates an apparent force which makes objects fall down, while matter repells matter, resulting in things moving down until they touch something. Combined with the physical properties of liquids, this makes them flow downhill."
"What forces are at play within it?"
"Strong, Weak, Electro-magnetic, gravitational."
"How can one shift its movements?"
"Many ways! Magneticaly, mechanically, geologically... Any specific category? We'll be here all day."
