  • We'll learn what scales to use on what chords when playing the ii-V-I progression in MAJOR. And by the end we will have created a very useful and complete SCALE CHART for jazz improvisation.
    Our SCALE CHART is complete and enclosed - and we'll find out that we can combine any of our scales to make an awesome result. At the conclusion of this jazz lesson I'll demonstrate that, by rolling dice and playing lots of random thrilling scale progressions, all extracted from our chart.
    In this other jazz lesson we also build up a similar scale chart - but over the chords from the ii-V-i progression in MINOR.

    This is the most useful you have ever done I believe. I don’t even play piano but the amount of improvement I have seen today alone is visceral. It’s still a lot to go over but my business will double at the apartments where I work as a plumber.

    Thank you so much for this brilliant lesson. Playing by ear, I've always had to discover the more interesting modes through experimentation and linking a few together hadn't occured to me. Suddenly, creating complex sounding music doesn't seem so daunting. A priceless lesson which I am certain will have dramatic implications for my music. Truly grateful.

    My English is not very good, but I want to tell you that I am very grateful for everything you do for music. I am just learning how to improvise, and I would like to know how can I determine in which position to place the pentatonic grip (the pentatonic grip that you teach in your other videos) to play the different scales I would like to use for each chord? Again, I want to repeat that I am very grateful for all that you do and that for me, you make music something more entertaining. Thanks!

      Hi and thank you so much for your very nice comment and your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) The pentatonic hand grip only fits the 7 Modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian). In this lesson we use many other kinds of scales. But if you like doing the pentatonic hand grip just keep on evolving your Music with that grip - you don't have to know and play all scales. Simple Music is often the best Music! In this playlist I've gathered all my lessons about the pentatonic hand grip - and more will come...

    i love your calm voice and this 1 is a great vid! btw is that true that every notes is capable for improvise? the more i learn about the music theories i get more confuse like there are too many scale modes and it's like just play what sound good there always be support by some kind of scale modes or something. is there anything i should learn to get it right?? (i just want some guide to learn more about theories)

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  4 місяці тому

      Hi and thanks a lot :) Yes, we can use any tone when improvising - as we for example do in this other very practical lesson also playing over a ii-V-I progression ua-cam.com/video/KqtS_Vr2rqw/v-deo.html
      In this lesson we make a systematic and structured overview of scales and families of scales if you want to learn more about theory: ua-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/v-deo.html

    All the included intervals over the dm7 and g7 are infact the same (transposed) with the exclusion of the M7 interval and over the Cmaj7 the m2 and m7 are excluded. How did you come to those rules tho and why, coz couldnt you technically use any 7 of the 11 notes at random and they would still transition smoothly on chord change?

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi :) Yes, very well spotted, some of the scales contain the same keys. In this other lesson we learn more about families of scales ua-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/v-deo.html But the idea in this lesson is to change the keys, the sound when going from one chord to the next to make the progression more 'moving'.
      And yes, correct, we can play any tone - as we for example do in this other lesson, playing chromatic together with arpeggios and blues scale over the ii-V-I progression.
      The rules are just to make a well-defined a field of study. But at the same time we extract some of the most used and common scales throughout western music history.
      Cheers from Oliver
