The bob ross of piano tutorials, his voice is so soothing and his piano just resonates so calmly and his fingers move so fluidly. This man deserves to teach at Berkeley. This is the only tutor I have found who I believe teaches the modes the 'right way round'. Most approach this from a more formal way, whereas this teaches by explaining the sound of the modes and how they are related in terms of tonal colour. I have read books, watched tutorials but this was the missing connection I have been looking for. Excellent!
As a berklee grad myself, I agree. All these videos are conveyed in a way that is so eye opening and simple to understand. Helping me continue my journey as a bassist.
@@MrP3t3 Hey man i am thinking of getting into a music school, can u give an honest opinion if i should? Because youtube provides nice theory and all and im contemplating a lot about this, many regards
Ariel Schumann Maybe not Berklee but you have to study and learn. And live. Any music that you learn is great but must interact with every other part of life. And with itself. If you are talking with children what do you discuss? Socrates? The meaning of life? The Pythagorean theory? I’m not talking about dummying down either. Study can help you acquire the maturity to know when to do what. Experience too. It’s like imaging Goliath on the battle field taunting his enemies to fight him. Who wants to do this? It’s a waste of time, unless like him you lack good and positive personality traits as Goliath did, and was showed up by a child. I think all this can be good.

Oliver, you are the best teacher I have ever encountered You teach music theory and jazz in such an intelligent way Thank you for all you are doing for all of us
In just a few months of studying Oliver's lessons, I have made great progress in understanding the functional relationships of modes. This greatly expanded my possibilities in improvisation. I regret that now there is no way to donate from Russia, due to terrible events... Many thanks to Oliver, your lessons help me a lot to get through this pain and disappointment. So far I only saw the first two minutes; a slow introduction of what is in the video. Yet, I'm enjoying it as i would a good movie. I don't know anyone who has that talent. It's a pleasure to watch and learn from you Oliver.
Hi Oliver - have you ever looked at what you presented here from the perspective of the circle of fifths? For example, when you play C Lydian you are actually playing G Major over C. C Mixolydian is F Major over C, and so on you get to C Locrian, which is just Db Major over C. When you look at it this way and with what you’ve presented in regards to breaking the boundaries, you are playing D Major over C, which doesn’t tie to any known mode because D Major has a C# in it, but it’s not “wrong” - it just has its own super bright sound. It’s almost like there are 5 other modes that we don’t touch because the root is either sharpened or flattened, but they still have their own interesting sound that’s worth exploring! It’s also interesting that Lydian is the only “official” mode to the right of Ionian. Sometimes I think this gives credence to George Russel when he said that Lydian is actually the true “home” scale in music and not Ionian, and that makes sense when you consider that there are no avoid notes when you play a Lydian scale over a Maj7.
