The teacher here was pretty clear that this is basic beginner help. I am an adult coming back to beginner learning. The chord method of teaching gave me freedom and enjoyment. I also have longed for “more” but I think it’s really important for beginners to get these basics down first. He did mention that later on in other videos he will be adding things. I can hear the hunger to play beautifully in you! I certainly can identify with that! If I know the chords, I can find my melody within them… and after that the sky is our limit. 😊
Yeah once you find the scale then you just run with it and play it.. I finally bought a Yamaha p-45 and I love it about 3 months ago.. get yourself a looper.. it will change your life too@@cherylsmith6528
I truly don’t get why some people feel it necessary to pick this lesson apart because in my opinion, it is laid out in a very sensible and logical manner. Thanks for yet another great (and free I might add) lesson!
I agree, I am proficient in guitar and picking up the piano daily. I also teach guitar and this information is useful for guitar students to understand how chords are constructed on piano and hence guitar! I also agree it’s important to show that leaning these chords will give you access to many songs which you can sing along with! In other words we play guitar or piano to make music so helping someone string chords together efficiently will keep the motivation driving! Thanks for a good video!
Wow!!!!! You have helped me a LOT! I have to be taught visual to learn. I am a older student just starting. 1st the Most Important teaching Skill you have is for beginners, you go Very Slowly and you are very thourough.. thank you. So many teachers are so fast and just sit and play their songs very fast to show how talented they are. I get they want to let people know they are smart but im here to learn as a beginner pre K starting . Lol. I loved their talent but vould not learn that fast. But this technique you shared, was crutial for me. You give us so much in your videos. I LOVE THE WAY YOU TEACH THIS LESSON ON HOW TO USE FINGER HAND POSITIONS ON INVERSIONS. NEVER HEARD THAT. WHEN I BEGAN TO TRY INVERSIONS I BECAME OVERWHELMED!! TO SAY THE LEAST.! BUT YOU TAUGHT ME A PATTERN AND A WAY TO PRACTICE 3 AT A TIME, PLUS 3 INVERSIONS, PLUS SAME 3 MINOR AND MAJOR AT Same time. Excellent !! Thank you so much. I have hope and encouragement i can go forward now. Bless you. Have a great day. 😃
I've been playing for a year and a half. Luckily I saw PFS present an earlier version of this video, and I mastered triad chords in no time at all. You're correct, this method is really a breakthrough. BTW, I'm watching a "beginner" video again, since I started playing through my Volume one method books again. I'm doing every exercise and playing all the songs, working to be more musical. My piano teacher noticed the improvement right away. Never hesitate to go back and try easy things, especially for sightreading. Bon courage.
Im a visual learner and thus found ( albeit to my surprise) this video is a game changer for me. Ive been playing much of this in my daily practice pieces via my adult learning method, however, it didnt click until this video. As im also challenged by adhd im taking a break at mid point and will come back to learn from the second portion after ive practced the first half a bit.
Hi, glad it helped make things click! All the chords are in one video but I would suggest for most people to work on one group at a time over a period of time, just moving on to the next when you're ready 👍
This is the best tutorial to achieving my piano goals. Years now have byn using app and other UA-cam video without a comprehensive teaching . But in just few days I stumbled on your page , feels like a magic. You a great teacher , appreciation from Maryland, 🇺🇸
I watched an earlier version of this over a year and a half ago, and it helped me gain knowledge of chords rapidly. Two weeks ago I dusted off my volume one method books of La Méthode Rose and John Thompson (in French) and started playing all the exercises again. And I'm trying all the songs but to be more musical. My piano teacher noticed an improvement right away and has encouraged me to continue. LMR is bilingual, and anyone wanting to learn French will benefit. I started playing seventh chords and watched some jazz channels and was completely lost. I decided to master triads before moving on to more advanced things. Great video, I like what you've done with the channel. Bon continuation.
Just a comment, I'm watching this again since PFS is THE best channel for learning these inversions. I just started doing Donyani exercises to learn seventh chords. But I'm not using the standard chromatic method for switching keys. I like working either the circle of fourths or the circle of fifths. And the inversions change, so there is more to learn. I showed it to my piano teacher, and he's very encouraging. It's important to keep track of the tonic. I'm also using Thoroughbass. It would be nice to do a slightly more advanced video, since your production method is excellent.
How happy I am to have discovered you...what a teacher! You make everything so understandable...I'm very curious to see how things will go now...I thank you again
I'm new to piano. I've been practicing my triads for weeks and my over and under with the thumb. Then I come across your video which I've learned so much from and I'm only halfway through. Thank you much! I see patterns anyways so you pointing them out parallels my thought process so we think alike. I appreciate it
Thank you! I have just started learning how to play using chords. I found you instruction so clear and easy and I have practiced just how you taught. In two weeks I was able to play simple songs and I am thrilled. My piano teacher was very impressed and I sent her your channel. Thank you for making learning this easy and directly applicable. I am looking forward to learning more from you.
Great vid, Thanx!😃 Could you teach the same smart thing how to learn 4 note chords also. Seems impossible to remember all inversions on 4 note chord?! Anyone any tips on how to memorize 4 note chord inversions?
Excellent presentation. Many of the teachers on UA-cam are excellent players, but not so good as teachers. You do both very well! This is extremely helpful for my journey through all the chords and inversions. It seemed overwhelming until now. Now I think it’s very feasible. Thank you!
Thank you soooo much!!! I have mainly been practising scales for the past 3 months and started with chords a few weeks ago which I found quite overwhelming. I decided to start with learning C-G-Am-F + inversions and go from there. This video is sooo helpful. It gives me the perfect structure to practise. Really makes me feel so 😀😍🎶💃.

Thanks for the frank statement, revealing the difference between building, finding, locating, visually identifying chords and their inversions and actually having several chords in your fingers. It takes way longer than any UA-camrs admit.
Absolutely great! I was looking for exactly this topic for the last few days and you’ve just now posted this. How fortunate am I!? Thank you. 😁 I have a question …should I learn the triads and their inversions also in the left hand? Would you say that would be “essential” or “useful” or a “waste of time”?
Yes that would be good practice for your left hand too. Depending on the music, there are times when we’ll need to navigate these positions with either hand.
Light bulb moment!! Great explanation, I get what to practice now! I’m a fairly new beginner, but I play guitar too. Ive always wanted to learn keyboards for 80s songs, now I have a clue. Do you have anything explain about left had vs right had like splitting chords? Thank so much Eileen B Florida
Really useful and great job my friend.I've learned so much by watching this and have for many years struggled with chord inversions. You have now given me the keys to making this a whole lot simpler. Thanx my friend!!!!I owe you one dude!!!
@@PianoFromScratch Hey Max...can you do another easy, simple method tutorial for inversions for all seventh chords that you just did here with major and minor triads??I love the way you present a simple method for remembering how to create and remember the finger shape patterns for the inversions for triads...so am hoping you can do another bang-up tutorial for all types of seventh chords in 1st,2nd and 3rd inversions? I'm using the "brute force" approach: chords of 4 notes (with the 7th), I started with C and C#, Major and Minor, (that means 4 chords x 4 positions (1 main position + 3 inversions) = 16 positions of muscle memory). Every day for 2 weeks. After that the next two notes: D and Eb. And go on. After 3 months, with all 12 notes completed, I will restart with C and C#, this time with 7th and half diminished chords (other 16 positions for 15 days), To complete after 3 months. Job completed in 6 months. (Hopefully... :D)

Thanks for this!! I'm a beginner so I need to start at the beginning. Learning all of the chords and inversions is what i really need so thank you soooo much this is really helpful. I want to be able to pick up a lead sheet and play the chords without thinking too much or having to look up the chord on the internet or in a book. I will worry about the fancy stuff later once i learn the basics!
as a music teacher (and currently teaching myself to play piano) I don't agree...first, I am learning my major scales (one at a time)...I am adding one scale each week and learning the major arpeggios and block chords of I, IV, V, I...starting with C, then G, then D and so on (circle of 5ths)...I practice the arpeggios of CEG, then CFA then DGB...then G scale with arpeggios of GBD, then GCE, then F#,A, D...and so on....as you continue with the circle of fifths, you gradually build with adding arpeggios that you have previously mastered...then I take a simple song like Amazing Grace to put the block chords and arpeggios into purposeful use as I learn to play and develop my ear...I am learning inversions and scales and chord progressions and how to be musically creative with simple songs and hopefully more complex songs...but I must be patient and practice each day...
This is wonderful information - thank you! I’m sharing a free, bite by bite music reading curriculum on my UA-cam channel in hopes of making music literacy accessible to all.
Sensei, can you please teach us how to play the themesong from the movie called Dying Young (1991)? I believe the name of that song is called 'I'll Never Leave You'. That song just nags at the heart, and makes you feel VERY SAD! 😥
been lookong all over the internet but cant find anything on this question i have what fingering should be used for 4 note chord inversions 1st 2nd and 3rd
3:51 I don't get the "1, 3, 5" thing...E is 4 half steps up from C and G is 3 half steps up from E. I see the white keys thing you're saying but that doesn't work with D, for example.
Hi, when comparing the white key chords, C is major but D is minor. They both have a 1 3 5 but a major chord has a major 3rd (4 half steps from 1) where as a minor chord has a minor 3rd (3 half steps from 1). I recommend checking out this video which is on basic chord construction with major and minor chords ua-cam.com/video/KoeJgh0elzM/v-deo.html
one thing I found Difficult, was to see how the root to the first third, was a different distance from 3rd to the 5th, yet they were both 3rds apart, all became clear when I discovered major chords are made up from a major 3rd and a minor 3rd, stacked on top, to explain a major third is 4 steps away from the root, followed by a minor 3rd, which is 3steps away from the previous 3rd, a minor chord is the opposite, root to the first 3rd 3steps away, the next 3rd 4steps away
I'm glad to see/hear you again! Don't know how I've gotten behind in your presentations--I see several have been posted and I missed them! That's ok; I'll catch up; you can "take note" of that!! ha
Hi Jimmy! No worries, sometimes UA-cam doesn’t always show videos to subscribers, which is a pain. Best thing is to click the notifications bell for the channel and that should let you know when there’s a new one. Thanks for watching!
I will be doing a separate video focused on reading chords but in short, the same shape of these 3 positions can be seen on the staff as well so if you recognise those, you don't actually have to read all 3 notes.
I learned inversions from Elton John songbooks in the 1970s. I could read music at a basic level from learning in 3rd grade so memorizing all major and minor inversions took less time than it did to watch this video. Guitar inversions, on the other hand, are still something I struggle with after 50 years. No white or black keys to visually clue me in - just frets that all look the same.

They really are not
That was a help
3:51 I don't get the "1, 3, 5" thing...E is 4 half steps up from C and G is 3 half steps up from E. I see the white keys thing you're saying but that doesn't work with D, for example.
Hi, when comparing the white key chords, C is major but D is minor. They both have a 1 3 5 but a major chord has a major 3rd (4 half steps from 1) where as a minor chord has a minor 3rd (3 half steps from 1). I recommend checking out this video which is on basic chord construction with major and minor chords

one thing I found Difficult, was to see how the root to the first third, was a different distance from 3rd to the 5th, yet they were both 3rds apart, all became clear when I discovered major chords are made up from a major 3rd and a minor 3rd, stacked on top, to explain a major third is 4 steps away from the root, followed by a minor 3rd, which is 3steps away from the previous 3rd, a minor chord is the opposite, root to the first 3rd 3steps away, the next 3rd 4steps away
GENIAL!

How do I ‘practice’ the chords. I know how to find the chords but I can’t find them in the musical score?
I will be doing a separate video focused on reading chords but in short, the same shape of these 3 positions can be seen on the staff as well so if you recognise those, you don't actually have to read all 3 notes.
I think I'm gonna learn chromatic roots and all their inversions first. 😀
I want to check out some downloads, and wont let me go to check out....
