I see there are some ppl who are curious exactly as to how it works and no I do not own one but I sold plenty of them during the time I worked for best buy so I learned their functionality. yes you have to have WiFi, as you seen in the video, he had to sign in to the WiFi to access it. the chromecast uses a WiFi-direct function so in order to connect to it directly, the chromecast and the device have to be on the SAME WiFi signal. the chromecast only mirrors what's on your phone, kinda like plugging your phone in with an MHL adapter, using your TV as your screen. the chromecast and other streaming devices are more beneficial to ppl who don't have a smart tv to stream with so if you have a smart tv, you're already good. it doesn't need to be recharged because it's not rechargeable, it uses a power source to function just like if you were to charge your phone in an outlet, but he used his tv's USB port which killed 2 birds with one stone. I'm not sure about hotel usage because their WiFi is set up where you have to sign into it as a guest or whatever so that I'm not familiar with. either way, in order to cast from your device to the tv, you have to be connected to the same WiFi signal. whatever you stream is whatever service you pay monthly for besides like UA-cam. if you have Netflix or Hulu or something, it streams right from your device onto the tv so you're not paying a monthly service for the chromecast, you pay it for Netflix, hulu, etc. hope this helps for those wondering how it works and considering buying one. I'm currently about to pick one up myself until the day I get a smart tv

great quality Tim. I'm wondering if this is able to be played through my surround sound? it says it can but I'm not tech smart lol. my DVD play is also my surround sound, it has wifi built in..only 1 HDMI port and 1 USB port

what you can do is connect the chromecast audio to your minidisk player , if you have one , via digital in on the minidisk , then press record on the deck , no disk needed and bang , you are now using the player as a dac , you have just given the minidisk player wifi

Ever considered using Chromecast while having a USB OTG Hub conntected to your phone(With said hub having multiple USB ports for accessories like a USB Flash Drive(or Hard Drive), Keyboard and Mouse?
why, it's only any good for displaying pictures and low resolution video's anyway, regardless of the router you are using
What is the app that was used towards the end of this video? There are a ton of chromecast apps out there and looked awesome to be able to browse netflix and UA-cam in the same app

Just got mine and the picture is 10x better than the first Gen and I can use it on the weak side of the house that has a bad wifi signal.
+Ana Rita from looking at the before and after, the picture quality is a lot better and also since it's on the weak side of the house it's even loading faster.

I have the first Chromecast.
It suits my needs just fine. Is the 2nd version better? Likely, by a mere couple seconds when it comes to buffering in a movie/tv show from Netflix etc. That's not enough to make me want to upgrade.
I don't play games via the Chromecast so that's a non-issue for me.
If you don't have one, by all means grab the new version. Yet if you can find the first at a sizeable discount, get it.
The menu interface is the exact same between the 2 versions.

have they fixed lag issues when screen mirroring with a windows desktop? I'd like to use this device to mirror my computer with a projector to watch films. As I recall the old chromecast would lag during mirroring and cause the audio to not be in sync with the video.
which one would you recommend this or nvidia shield TV I'm stuck in between them 2 I know some people may think it's a easy choice but I won't be using it for gaming only streaming
Will Chromecast work if plugged into the back of an AV receiver? Our receiver has 4 HDMI inputs, but our TV is older, and it only has one input.

I messed with this three hours earlier and three hours this evening and I've done exactly the same thing as you have done and all I get on my screen is reconnect me.

Tim I just got mine today as well. So far I don't see any difference in performace between this and the first generation Chromecast. And honestly the device itself feels cheaper than the first one, even the box is a lot crappier. What do you think?
I would say not so much. it has a better processor and better antennas, but i don't feel any difference between this and the first generation, I have both.
Hopefully, 1080p or even 4k is fluid. On my old chromecast, 720p was tops. Network issue, I thought, but roku worked perfectly in the higher resolutions.
My phone can't find the device! I don't know how to fix this issue.
Good review. looks easy to set up. I bought a cheap allcast one. it was complicated to set up and once everything was connected it knocked the WiFi power out. Would I be able to watch Showbox from my phone or tablet using the Chromecast?

+nEEdLzZz sorry I don't understand u but I recently got the new chronecast and it works perfectly with playbox also u stream movies over the internet and u only need the chromcast app to set up ur chromecast also playbox does not seem to work on iphone 5's and over I use an iphone 4 also there is a problem with android version of playbox

Can you manually pick the output resolution 720p or 1080p or is it still set to auto like the previous chromecast. I have a older TV that I wanted to use but the auto resolution on the chromecast will not pick up my older 720p TV and defaults to 1080p which renders the screen unwatchable.

The old one is called 'CHROME
The new one is called ''CHROMECAST.
I went to Best Buy and asked for USB/Stick box that says " NEW Chromecast"". It does't exist
They should give it a Number, etc
