Google had a conference with app developers last week to inform them that to get into the Google TV app store they need to allow full account integration and follow certain standards. Anyone else experiencing a really dark screen when using chromecast? Increasing the brightness to max on my screen doesn't help at all. Issue only occurs using chromecast, I have apple tv and that works fine. Thoughts and solutions welcome.
Very informative review. Much helpful. Just curious that if any of the issues mentioned, like inconsistent rewind forward across various app, Dolby Vision/Atmos and 4K support are fixed? Thanks in advance!
Just found this and it's 3 years old. Does the Chromecast with Google TV support 4K content for all the apps yet? I have both Disney Plus and Amazon Prime video and if this doesn't play the content in 4K that's kinda a deal breaker.
Why do reviewers of the chromecast with google tv never cover how well it plays with google home (not as in google assistant which you use on the remote but integration with your home automation when using a google speaker. Can I tell google nest to play x,y or z and it will still find the best or most relevant series on whichever app, or do I have to still say watch x,y or z from netflix). Every review I have seen has glossed over it and just focused on the little button on the remote.
That's a great question and apologies for not addressing it in the review. In general, it works fine. You don't always have to say "On Netflix" or "On Disney Plus" at of the end of your request. For example, the Assistant is able to figure out how to play "The Crown" on the TV without me having to include Netflix in my request. - Josh
I just bought that but then again I use it for my 'dumb' tv lol....I oriiginally had the older version and I had to cast from a tablet or phone. I am just happy I can find Netflix and UA-cam with the touch of a button. Although my TV does not support 4 k the picture has improved considerably. And omg it's so easy to set up....I love that...no fuss at all. I am having a spot of bother with a download...gives me error when it tires to install but as I said I simply love it.....my 'dumb' tv has become smarter than my 'smart' tv lol
How laggy is it for casting movies or videos from a MacBook? and does it really need wifi router? can it be a standalone just for presentations as well?
Great review, Josh! We have 2 in our family - definitely would recommend! Yes, the universal search on the main UI is very handy. Our 4K / HDR(10) / Dolby Vision has been working well on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, & the UA-cam app. Don't have an Atmos system, so can't confirm. Only occasional issue I find is sometimes the picture goes to a high contrast all of a sudden, and things look a little red/orange. Hopefully, just gets fixed by an update. But overall, very happy with it 😀
Going to "Display & Sound" > "Dynamic Range & Color Format" > "Match content dynamic range" and setting it to "Match content" might help, I'd recommend that in general, especially with a good TV, so the TV can display and map the SDR content, rather than the Google TV trying to map it somehow.
Sometimes when I press the home button it goes to a black screen a takes a while to load. Is this something common? I’ve had this on 2 of them already.
It is also not easy to log in to Netflix. Also, this newest version of Chromecast doesn’t let me control the volume from my phone when I use the pop-up control, so if I launch on my phone, I need to use my phone plus the remote.
You have extremely nice review but I couldn’t find what I’m looking for. Example, if I connect this to a projector, is it possible during casting, you can split the sound to output in a Bluetooth Home Theater instead of projector sound output? I have connectivity issue in my home. The home theater is in front and the projector at the back. Using 3.5mm jack wired will not give you Dolby Atmos Surround quality. My projector has only 3.5mm jack and AV options which both of them are not surround sound. My only hope this device can split the video and audito into its Bluetooth. Thanks for your answer, appreciated.
Is no one else having issues with volume normalization? Even if I stick with the same UA-cam app, some videos are louder than others so I have to constantly change volume. It seemed to just work on the Apple TV even across different apps.
I've only had this problem with Disney+. I have found that their app is significantly lower in volume when compared to others. I've noticed this because it happens on multiple devices. Chromecast, PS5, and iPad.
But will it save my progress of my Netflix show without going to Netflix? Also, do you have any recommendations on which streaming device is best for wanting to be able to just turn your TV on and have it go to a specific input immediately? Preferably with voice? I want to be able to walk in my front door and just say hey Google put on Netflix, and then it automatically turns on my TV and put on Netflix on the right input and everything. Also, I’m wanting to be able to quickly switch to my Nintendo switch
Thank you for the review Josh. I am very pleased with the unit except for one recurring issue - roughly once a week now the unit just has stopped working (no home screen pic when turning on) - the only remedy I've found is to reboot the unit. So far no help from support. I wonder if this is a hardware issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I don't get it...if you have a Google tv, doesn't that have the same features /apps as the chromecast? Or do you have to buy and connect a chrome cast...
People keep telling me that I still need to use my phone to watch UA-cam tv on my TV, if I use a chrome cast. But a few people have said that's not true. They say I can use this the same way I use my roku stick. Just plug it in and access the UA-cam tv app. Which one is true? I ask because roku just dumped UA-cam TV, so while I can still watch it now, that might change in the future. I really like UA-cam TV, but I'm not going to use my phone. I want to just turn my TVs on, and click my app on screen, like I've always done
I have used it for few months, don’t have Internet cable port. So you can expect some late latency after first 2-3 weeks when you forward a bit the video. The only thing i haven't changed is my Note 20 Ultra which has a damaged screen. I've unplugged it as it became unwatchable.

@@DagoRuiz turns out it had the same IP address randomly assigned as one of my static devices. I changed the IP address on my static device (so they don't clash) and it works fine now.

I'd like to be able to use the Chromecast with Google TV with my Yamaha RX-A770 receiver. But after trying to set it up, it appears that it might not be possible. The setup process is asking me to sign into my Google Account. But there is no way to input my Google Account information via the Yamaha RX-A770 receiver's remote, as far as I can tell. And by the way, I don't have a TV connected to the Yamaha RX-A770 receiver. A Dell monitor is connected to it so that I can watch 4K Ultra HD TV programming without having an oversize TV in the room. Therefore, connecting the Chromecast with Google TV directly to a TV rather than the Yamaha RX-A770 receiver is not an option. I have to installed it yet.(trying to get rid of Xfinity first) any way, has some of the complaints you mentioned in this video above (Apr 9, 2021), been corrected. I think i am going to enjoy my choice. Just wanted to know about the correction's. Nice review, thanks. It has been a while since I checked on your channel. Your still a great reviewer.
You’re definitely my go-to for long term reviews. Unbiased and informative. You’re doing it right.
Simple important feature missed..is there playstore?
Is there any advantage to using this device over just using the Android TV app that came with my new 85 inch Sony Bravia?
Just the remote if you find it to be an advantage, otherwise the Sony should be fine. We have a Sony Bravia as well and Google TV runs smoothly on it.
@@6MonthsLater thanks!
What an amazing review, keep up with the hard work Josh, appreciate it!👍
Hi. Do the recommendations include your Plex library titles? thanks!
Hi, i would like to know too 😌
Unfortunately, no
@@TeLES87 thank You Carlos
Can you still cast to it in 4K from your phone's Netflix?
The Dolby Atmos .... I have an older Bose system that is insane.... but it's not Dolby Atmos... is there a way to improve it? 🤔
I use an older Bose Acoustimass system with my setup. The main way to upgrade to Dolby Atmos is to have a receiver that supports it. I upgraded to a new Onkyo receiver the supports it: amzn.to/2QbLb0W - Josh
I have a basic little Vizio with 1 sub and 2 satellites and it supports Atmos for cheap, sounds fine
@@6MonthsLater so all the bose speakers and sub hook up and work as good or better?
Anyone else experiencing a really dark screen when using chromecast? Increasing the brightness to max on my screen doesn't help at all. Issue only occurs using chromecast, I have apple tv and that works fine. Thoughts and solutions welcome.
Looking to upgrade my Chromecast. Does this have an option for an alarm clock? I basically use my Chromecast for my bedroom clock
Airplay support?
You need a apple tv device.
Nice so is this like another roku player type of device?
Why do reviewers of the chromecast with google tv never cover how well it plays with google home (not as in google assistant which you use on the remote but integration with your home automation when using a google speaker. Can I tell google nest to play x,y or z and it will still find the best or most relevant series on whichever app, or do I have to still say watch x,y or z from netflix). Every review I have seen has glossed over it and just focused on the little button on the remote.
Most people don't have that mine shows me my door bell when it goes and many other useful things
- Josh
Also, you can ask Google to turn off the TV using HDMI CEC which is a nice feature and ends up turning off the entire system.
Apple TV and Apple Music apps available for Google TV?
❓ How well does it work with Philips Hue Sync? (e.g. over the HueEssential app)?
But overall, very happy with it 😀
It always happens after watching any Dolby vision content.
@@RamonMcNally Thanks, good to know why - will take note of this next time.
Going to "Display & Sound" > "Dynamic Range & Color Format" > "Match content dynamic range" and setting it to "Match content" might help, I'd recommend that in general, especially with a good TV, so the TV can display and map the SDR content, rather than the Google TV trying to map it somehow.
Is it possible to side load apps (install APK files manually) onto this Google Chomecast 4K device?
what an awesome review! i need him to review everything tech
Can you use the chromecast independently from your phone? I am interested in this but don't want to "cast" everything from my phone
Yes
Sometimes when I press the home button it goes to a black screen a takes a while to load. Is this something common? I’ve had this on 2 of them already.
Can it recommend shows from your own plex/emby?
Yes you can, also TiVo supports that too
What's the difference between casting the app from my phone and having the device connect to my TV?
I’m going to buy this, I hope they sort it out those little gripes you’ve mentioned
can you search for specific tv shows and specific networks like HBO, ABC, NBC etc?
Is no one else having issues with volume normalization? Even if I stick with the same UA-cam app, some videos are louder than others so I have to constantly change volume. It seemed to just work on the Apple TV even across different apps.
I have those problems too!
Me three. I thought it was just me
I've only had this problem with Disney+. I have found that their app is significantly lower in volume when compared to others. I've noticed this because it happens on multiple devices. Chromecast, PS5, and iPad.
I have an old Chromecast which won't link to to Netflix. Does this one link to Netflix?
Yes, it should.
can i use laptop or mobile while watching movies when its connected
How does google tv works with cable channels?
Can you add the Kodi app on here?
I don't get it...if you have a Google tv, doesn't that have the same features /apps as the chromecast? Or do you have to buy and connect a chrome cast...
Thanks for the great review. do you think I would be able to use the remote even though the Chromecast device is in another room?
If you don't use the IR functionality then yes, if not than you'd need to be in line of sight with the device.
Can you download the file link app on Chromecast?
What about local channels (CBS) (NBC) (ABC) (WPIX) etc so you watch local channels and also other previously owned cable channels?
is the youtube app the same as the one on android phones or is it the same as on smart tvs?
What video formats does Chromecast not play?
Hows the wifi connection ?? dose it could it reconize 5G 2G ??
People keep telling me that I still need to use my phone to watch UA-cam tv on my TV, if I use a chrome cast. But a few people have said that's not true. They say I can use this the same way I use my roku stick. Just plug it in and access the UA-cam tv app. Which one is true? I ask because roku just dumped UA-cam TV, so while I can still watch it now, that might change in the future. I really like UA-cam TV, but I'm not going to use my phone. I want to just turn my TVs on, and click my app on screen, like I've always done
You can access the UA-cam Tv app on Chromecast Tv.
Can an app be installed in the chromecast ?
Is discovery+ available on this?
I have used it for few months, don’t have Internet cable port. So you can expect some late latency after first 2-3 weeks when you forward a bit the video.
Bought 2 usb type c hub, first usb hub worked for 2-3 weeks, after I tried my second type hub because of different delivery late. It’s become unable to works with external hub with different power input connection, 7.5 w, 15w, 18w.
At the end become 7.5w input with no hub.. reverse to the original setting.
I've just bought one and it does nothing but cut in and out, stutter and causes my surround system to pop and crackle. I've tried everything I've found on Google but the problem persists. The only thing i haven't changed is my Note 20 Ultra which has a damaged screen. I've unplugged it as it became unwatchable.
is weverse app available on chromecast with google tv?
Can we cast AppleTV through ChromeCast?

Is it possible to connect 2 (or more) Bluetooth Headphones?
I like how he explained it down to details. Most people don't do that they just wanna say what they think people wanna hear and what he said is exactly what I wanna hear about this Chromecast with Google before I go and buy it at my Walmart
Does it come in black?
5G or 4G hotspot support?
mine drops internet connection intermittently throughout the day although it remains connected to wifi. and I'm using Google Wifi!
I got this for my brother in law and he has the same problem.
@@DagoRuiz turns out it had the same IP address randomly assigned as one of my static devices. I changed the IP address on my static device (so they don't clash) and it works fine now.
@@abefroman5437 Interesting. Would you suggest assigning a static MAC to the Chromecast?
@@DagoRuiz not sure how to do that but just run through all devices connected and make sure the Chromecast isn't clashing
is this better than Mi Box S? planning to buy this chromecast w/ google tv
Can I access other websites like using google other browsers?
What about sports like NBA games? Can I watch it, here in Australia?
I have such a small living room, I was thinking of getting this chromecast as well as a google home mini, would I still need google home mini if I can just have it on the telly? I have such a small space and don't think I need both now
Also, awesome video!
Those devices are for two different use cases. The Chromecast with Google TV is really all about just consuming media on your television. The nest mini is there to house the Google Assistant and it's always on and always listening even when your TV's off. So if you find value in that then you'd want to get one as well, if you just want to use the Assistant through the remote, then you'd be fine sticking with just the Chromecast - Josh
what is the difference between Vodafone tv and this. Vodafone tv is ending at the end of September and I'm looking for something like Vodafone tv. what are the costs like and does it play normal tv channels. I live in New Zealand
It's all a shame, because everything worked with an older Chromecast model.
