    There are a few issues I have with shaker pencils, one of which is that they aren't faster at all. Every time someone makes a video on a shaker pencil they exaggerate on how long it takes to click the top of the pencil when, in reality, it takes the same or less time than the shaker pencil.
    Another issue is that you can't really control how much lead comes out because of how forceful you must shake the pencil. Not only is this an issue, but I don't want to be seen furiously shaking my pencil when in class or writing something down in public.
    I suppose it really is preference but it I'd rather have something like a DelGuard that gives me a little more utility.

      "Literally seconds" haha. But yeah it's more of a novelty for me.

      Ebrithil1 the Zebra Delgaurd is literally a beast of a pencil. Not only can you draw with very light lines but you can press down harder for a more darker tone :D

      I have both and I actually prefer the mono. First, it looks and feels luxurious (it’s heavier because of the weight thing and I prefer pens/pencils that is the same width throughout the body, I also would’ve prefer the black model, I ordered it but they sent me the original mono design instead, oh well) and second, you don’t really need to furiously shake it, just a firm jerk and you’re good to go, looks exactly like if you’re trying to unclog ink with a pen, very normal. Trust me, I had this exact same fear that someone would think I’m weird but honestly, it only bugs me when I’m doing exams or in a particularly quiet classroom since it is a little loud.
      I find that I shake twice for more lead and once for less, I prefer shaking twice. That way I can sort of control it.
      Another reason is the needle tip, I don’t really like the conical tip on the Delguard, that way I can graph or sketch with ease, also useful in geometry.
      But since I’ve only used normal pencils before, with the clicker on the top, I’m used to pressing it on my face/shoulder (sounds weird but hey, works for me) so sometimes I press it to find the clicker is in a different position haha.

    • @anhhuynhkimnguyen6793
      @anhhuynhkimnguyen6793 5 років тому

      Also Idk if something is wrong with my Delguard or it’s just faulty design or I just write weirdly (I wasn’t taught how to write properly as a child so I write with my ring finger rather than my middle) but I find that the guard thing doesn’t extend quickly enough when I put vertical pressure on it.

      Actually shaker pencils can also be used as a regular mech pencils cause it can be clicked to advance the lead, but for a too lazy like me i think shaker pencils are convenient, if you don't want the show yourself shaking the pencil in public u can just simply click it, but this thing is just so cool i am just using the tombow one and trust me its sooo satisfying 😂😂

      Hi! I got the Tombrow Mono Graph Pencil, and it has a lock feature so that lead does not come when it shakes in a backpack, car, etc. The problem I have however, is that when I do shake the pencil to get more lead out of it, it just got in to the lock and doesn’t allow lead. Do you know why this is happening ?

    • @mackyrel
      @mackyrel 2 роки тому

      @@NoName-je1qh Hello! I believe we have the same pencil as mine also has that lock feature you're talking about. There's a label there that says "on off" right beside the clip. I think you just need to slide down the clip to disable the lock then shake the pencil and check if lead is coming out, just as how you'd slide up to lock it, hence the label. That's what I always do with mine. If you have tried it and it doesn't work then there might be something wrong with your pencil. Sometimes it would also take a while before lead comes out when you shake the pencil, from experience.

      It actually takes more effort to shake it than just press it 😅... If conventional pencils were shake types and someone invented a press type... Now that would be worth it lol
      Edit...
      I had a pretty cheap mechanical pencil when I was a kid... It had the press button right behind or in front of the finger when you hold it .. the concept was good but the pencil was cheap... I don't find such mechanisms anymore...

    These are actually amazing, but for some reason, I always loose my best pencils. Either someone steals them, or they fall out. My most famous is the, Graphgrear 1000 mechanical pencil, which was always stolen. And the Tombow was lost, but it was pretty cool.

  • @Jazz914

    You realise there are mechanical pencils that have the clicker right where you rest your index finger when writing? Quicker than shaking and the traditional method

    • @bballwatcher2224
      @bballwatcher2224 7 років тому +5

      Jazz A Not if you are used to either the push top (traditional) or shaker. Plus, the side click is not available in more obscure tip sizes like 0.3 mm. The shaker and push top are the only two available in 0.3 mm.

    • @Jazz914
      @Jazz914 7 років тому +2

      I found there to be no adjustment period (considering I've used push clickers for over 10 years throughout school~uni) because the clicker is right on the pen pad and your finger naturally rests just next to it.
      As for the tip sizes, I've never looked into that but I can confirm mine is 0.5mm, I would agree it would be nice to have a smaller tip size!

    • @bballwatcher2224
      @bballwatcher2224 7 років тому

      Jazz A For me, I use 0.3 mm regularly because I write too small for 0.5 mm to handle. This also means I have a higher prerequisite for quality.

      David Zhang There are actually two more relatively new mechanisms: bend knock and automatic. The automatic one does not require any push of a button, since pressure from writing will cause the clutch to open up, allowing more lead to come out of the lead sleeve. The bend knock is literally described as bending a certain part of the pencil which activates the clutch. Notes: the clutch is what holds the lead in place. Also, when I refer to lead, I do not mean Pb. Finally, I am only 17. Have a good day.

    Another alternative to the clcicky-top pencils is the ones that have a bend in the middle and can be extended by squeezing against the middle part of the pencil. A good example is the Tombow Olno, but there are others, even classy ones in a metal finish. I'd recommend them as they are quick so use and you don't have to adjust your grip to extend the lead and you also don't need to pick your hand up off the page like you would with a shaker. Also a bit more discrete for use at work or in class.

    There are actually two more relatively new mechanisms: bend knock and automatic.

    I'm just a little worried if you accidentally hit the paper while shaking it then it has the little dot that's impossible to erase

    Personally I own a Pilot Dr. Grip CL and a Uni Alpha Gel, and I really don't like the Uni's build quality. After some use the metallic paint on the tip, center, and cap of the Uni can scratch off to reveal the plastic underneath. Also, although the gel grip does feel nice, it attracts a lot of dust and debris, just like in the closeup of the pencil. Both the Uni and the Pilot have plastic bodies, but the Pilot Dr. Grip mas a much more solid feel. If you like to spin your pencils, the Dr. Grip is definitely more balanced and satisfying to spin or twirl. The Pilot Dr. Grip CL also comes in a variety of colors and designs. Still, the Uni Alpha Gel definitely deserves an honorable mention for its locking mechanism.

      Thanks for your thoughts! And that's true about it picking up dust which is a little annoying.

      blauen also, the Dr. grip could be assumed to be more for ergonomics (it's the recommended pencil by the Arthritis Foundation) while the Alpha Gel is for comfort (correct me if I'm wrong).
