In the mid 1950s, when tv was live, they had to fill space when a show ended early. A film of Candy doing this number was one of the fillers they used fairly often. I was 10 or 11 at the time and loved the video and really loved the little man who did it (though i did not know his name). Move now to 1973 and at LAJC one day a fellow student, Theresa Candido was playing this on the piano. I told her about my knowing the song and, lo and behold the next thing I knew I was meeting Candy. Over the next two years i was invited to their house where Candy dug out his bass and played for me and his family. The more i knew Candy and his family, the more i loved them all. I am the proud owner of a demo 45 rpm that Candy made with "The mouse that wanted to fly" on one side and "Barnacle Bill" the sailor on the other. My love to Candy's family and thanks for the memories. By the way Jacob Keene, all of that was Candy's real voice. everytime you watch the Wizard of Oz and hear the apple tree complaining...that's Candy!

      Michael, that's a WONDERFUL story.
I'm thinking what a thrill it must have been for you to "discover" this hero of your childhood.
And how wonderful it had to be for Candy, all those years later, to be able to connect with a "true fan" (because aren't those affections we develop as kids the purest?).
And the fact you went on to become an actual friend of the family just makes it all the sweeter.

Of course this is comedic, but the part after 2:30 is actually genuinely impressive as far as the timbre/color/etc. he manages to cover.
2:27 First, C2 and then down to G1 in a profundo, J.D. Sumner sounding voice.
    2:42 A quick pop into the falsetto/soprano range to C5. ~2:45
    2:46 A shift into a tenor-ish sounding mid-range.
2:51 Then G5 up to B5 (almost sounds like he's going to squeak that C6) in what sounds to be whistle register.
    3:00 Then a big C2 to finish.

That kind of voice doesn't come from smoking! His vocal chords had the ability to be very relaxed for the low notes and very tight for the high notes. He made good use of what he was born with! He was a bass player and a vocalist in his early years and then got into acting. Very funny man!

When I was a kid, my parents used to play a cassette tape of a woman performing a bunch of kids' songs on it and this was one of them. She would kind of whisper "and no spaghetti" after "one meat ball." I've been trying to find her all over the internet and I can't because I can't remember her name. Someone help!

I'm still looking for a version that goes like my Dad used to sing it :
One meatball, A little bit of gravy, you get no bread with one meatball."

I was watching Roberta (1933) he has a great part in it and looks almost exactly like Johnny Galecki from Roseanne and The Big Bang. Candy was supernaturally talented tho, he was a great performer.

Christina Candido your Grandfather was an ultra talented guy. There was never a Candy Candido type before Candy Candido and there hasn’t been one since. If there was ever a fitting epitaph for how great and unique he was, then I’ve just made it right there. One of a kind. RIP. 👍🏻👍🏻

Is this supposed to be funny or something? Jeez, if one thing has improved since the 1950’s, it’s televised comedy.
I will admit, this guy’s voice has some versatility, but I don’t think it’s enough to redeem this performance.

Absurd tragedy/melancholy (lugubriousness) is a tenant of comedy - Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh, or the Gloom, Despair, and Agony song from Hee Haw. The original version of this tune, "Lone Fish Ball," was written in 1855 by a Harvard professor who was once short on cash but faced no real threat of hunger.
