It was brought to our attention that one (and possibly other growling sounds) of these voices are incorrect. Jimmy MacDonald (Disney Legend) created the bear growls for Fox and the Hound. Our online resources were incorrect ...cough... IMDB & Disney Wiki... cough...
Yes! That's it. I was trying to remember where I saw that same exact clip a while ago. I thought it was the behind the scenes of The Fox and the Hound, but it was It All Started With A Mouse.
Either the way the growling was really impressive.
Saturday Morning Rewind 4give me Saturday Morning Rewind, but I have the feeling they're right! Candy Candido did do the Bear & Wild Cat growls & roars. But the late legendary & talented Jimmy MacDonald was the longtime Head Sound Designer of the Disney Sound Studio. 😃😉😁
Saturday Morning Rewind [In a caring & thoughtful voice] Oh Saturday, please 4give me, I don't mean 2 guilt u but u also 4got 2 include his voice over work as The Mafia Messenger in Ralph Bakshi's "Heavy Traffic" (1973), one of The Subhumans in Ralph Bakshi's "Fire & Ice" (1983) & one of The Horned King's Henchmen in Walt Disney's "The Black Cauldron" (1984).
Alex Feltch a.k.a. Sonic AL ❤️
I had no idea he was the tree in "The Wizard of Oz"! He would have been just 26 years old then, but he already had that creepy raspy sound perfected! Love these voice actors who have such long careers and iconic roles that span decades.
Yeah and 5 years before that he was in the 1934 short star night at the coconut groove
Jimmy Mcdonald does the vocal effects of the bear.
he was 21
Me neither what a twist!
His voice was most likely recorded for Oz in late 1938 when he was still 25, he was 21 when he made 'Roberta' with Fred and Ginger in 1935.
Wow. And I thought Frank Welker and Dee Bradley Baker can nail animal voices perfectly.
Jonny Boy I know. It’s crazy.
They do. Candy was basically their ancestor xd
I know
And so Did Pui Fan Lee And Clarence Nash Too!
@@darlagibbs925 Clearance Nash, that's Donald Duck. But who's Pui Fan Lee?
The man was Frank Welker before Frank Welker was even concieved.
fightclubhubbs You meant to say Mel Blanc right?
No. Franke Welker was well known for a ton of voice acting rolls including his numerous rolls voicing animals and beasts. I never knew until this video that Mel also voiced numerous animals and beasts prior to Frank Welker's work.
fightclubhubbs Yeah, Mel and Candy Candido were a few of the original golden age voice actors before Frank Welker and others even came into the picture. Mel Blanc himself trained Frank!
He reminds me of Fred Newman and Harvey Fierstein.
Agreed
You forgot the one mouse he also voiced in "The Great Mouse Detective". The one who goes "Get out you eight-legged bum!"
NickyVendetta Ooh, I sure did 😵
That's What I Said
NickyVendetta and Cinderella where Bruno growls at Lucifer for scratching him, and where Lucifer roars at Gus.
William Harding I meant when Bruno growls at Lucifer it sounds like Candy Candido.
I noticed that myself. You took the comment right out of my brain. ☺ 🖒
The early animated movies really have talented voice actors like Candy. It so amazing he can shift his voice from baritone to high-pitch.
@Saturday Morning Rewind Do the many voices of jess harnell.
And at the drop of a hat, too!
Candy had a very beautiful and powerful grave voice. I envy him... he was basically the predecessor of Frank Welker in being the go-to-guy for animal roars in cartoons. Also fun fact: the way Big Chief dances his feets like crazy in the song What made the red man red was inspired by Candy's habits of moving his feets while recording.
Do the many voices of tom kenny.
*feet
Mel Blanc was able to nail a deep raspy voice similar to him when he voiced Captain Caveman
2:44 speaking of Fidget, in "The Great Mouse Detective" Candy also voiced a mouse audience member during the scene at the bar who yelled "Get off the stage, you eight legged bum!".
The way I see it, Mr. Candido was particularly good at imitating deep voices and roars.
He really liked voicing talking trees, didn't he?
Seriously, how did he master that voice? I don't think I know anyone who can imitate that voice!
This guy is just too good. There are many amazing and talented voice artists, that have wide ranges of voices. This guy had that AND he could sing live, using those ranges pretty well in the same song. He used growl and falsetto , which clearly heard in his "one meatball " song.
@Saturday Morning Rewind Do the many voices of jack black.
This was the video I didn't realize I needed to see yet! What a range he had! Reminds me how anytime I imitated his voice to joke with my brothers/sisters when watching these movies, it always aggravated my vocal chords, yet Candy made a living off of it haha!
A character that I remember Candy voicing was unseen outside Baltimore, MD and environs. On screen, Candy was a Chesapeake Bay pelican in a National Beer Commercial that he voiced with Mel Blanc. Candy used his famous basso profundo voice for that one, about "Clammapolis, the Underwater Naval Academy", where his pelican told a bunch of cartoon clams, "OK, you guys, fall in!" When I met Candy at the Great Allentown Fair in Allentown, PA, where he served as the Fair's "Ambassador", he was delighted that I recognized him in the ad; but, he told me that he had never actually seen it.
Do the many voices of jimmy mcdonald.
When first saw that Candy Candido did the bat in the great mouse detective, I honestly found it hard to believe because of how deep his voice is. I'm guessing he had a very wide vocal range. It makes sense when I pulled up a video of him performing one meatball.
Robbie Farabee Yeah. I was amazed to hear One Meatball too. His range was amazing. And he’s hilarious in that video. I love his facial expressions.
I heard that his recording of Fidget the Bat in Mouse Detective was sped up to sound high pitched.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind
Frankly, I found that "One Meatball" segment to be a little weird -- and kind of stupid too.
I also found it strange that Candido was the one singing the "Popeye The Sailor Man" song on that old children's record (45 RPM). He didn't sound anything like Popeye's cartoon voice! Couldn't they have had this song recorded by the character's actual voice actor, whatever his name was?
@@michaelpalmieri7335 Jack Mercer.
@@SaturdayMorningRewindCould you do the many voices of Jason Griffith.
I liked his roars 0:48, 1:09, 2:00, 2:09, 2:55, 3:49, 4:56, 5:15, 5:27
Candy Candido was like the early Brad Garrett.
Wow I've always wondered what animal made all these roars (Shere Khan, the bear from The Fox and the Hound, the cocodiles from the Rescuers), it was actually a guy!
it makes you wonder how he was able to pull it off XD
Callahaine he used a lamp chimney to vocalize those sounds. ua-cam.com/video/DdW1lGqZAv4/v-deo.html&feature=share
@@jusjetz, that was Jimmy McDonald who made those sound effects by using lamp chimney, not Candy Candido.
I love Crocodiles better, but the bear sounds actually sound like it could be a bear!
Quite a talent he had. 😃 & such a voice.
Hannah Brown He’s always been one of my favorites - and I fell in love with him more while making this video. So talented, and funny.
@@SaturdayMorningRewindCould you do the many voices of jason griffith.
A lot of his roles sound very similar, unknown for certain though if that was Candy Candido’s real speaking voice.
I've heard a radio interview with him, his real speaking voice is your average East Coast accent... I think his low voice was just very good for animation lol
Another Great Guy Who Will Be Missed
Wow, I never even heard of "Hey Good Lookin". I'm not much of a Ralph Bakshi fan actually. Its impressive how many classic movies this actor was in! He could do some incredible voices.
I think he was in another Bakshi film called Heavy traffic
@@lilmissrockchick4962 Yup, he voices a mob associate. I pointed that out to SMR as well, but the obvious reason why he didn't show a clip is because he says the n-word in the film.
Don't forget the executioner in the Haunted Mansion...
I thought it was the prisoner, one of the Hitchhiking Ghosts
Actually it's the prisoners voice
Oh wow, I had no idea how much I heard this man's voice growing up!
So much talent. I always wondered who was behind those voice on Jungle Book and Robin Hood!
I’ve always liked the parts of all the films and animations that his character’s appeared and now I see they were from the same voice actor! That soothing raspiness is so good!
That was fascinating. My parents, over the years, had sung the, "One Meatball" my entire life but I never heard it until now. Nor, with ALL my love of animation, had I ever heard of Candy Candido. Shame!
One those awesome voice actors ever , has good vicious animal roar sound effect to boot
Very nice tribute.
If you do an updated version, check out Davy Crockett and the River Pirate. He provides the singing voice for Moose when the crew sings the King of the River song. Also, you can hear him singing in the reprise of Grim Grinning Ghosts in the Haunted Mansion ride.
❤❤👍👍 cool!
The Dee Bradley Baker of his generation
Can you do one with Tony Jay his voice was menacing.
Ashon Lewis Of course. I actually started planning it the other day. Should have it out in a couple weeks. He had such an amazing voice.
Saturday Morning Rewind yes he did it send chills down my spine.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Do the many voices of Dan Green.
(Yugi Moto, Yami Yugi, knuckles, Mewtwo and many more!)
Apple Tree 🍎 From The Wizard of Oz
4:40 No wonder that yawn sounded too human to be a cat. 😂
Candido’s voices are so amazing I didn’t know he did this much voice acting impressive
I remember Candy at the Disney studio in the early to mid 1980s. He used to sit with colleagues on a park bench out front of the Animation building on Mickey Ave and Dopey Dr. He always wore a blue jumpsuit as I recall. Never stopped and talked to him. Wish I had.
So... basically all of the most classic beastly roars. Nice.
RIP
Candy Candido
(1913-1999)
This is the first time I've heard the name of this voice I've heard all my life. Who would have thought such a guttural growling voice would come from someone named "Candy"?
You should do Thurl Ravenscroft.
There is a video about him.
Yeah, I found it not long after I put this comment 😂
Before Frank Welker, Dee Bradley Baker & Fred Tatasciore, We had this guy!
I didn't even know he was still active in '87!
2:04 He was probably eating a big burger when they recorded this one
Every generation of voice actor has that one specialty growler. These days, it's Fred Tatasciore.
I'm surprised they didn't cast him to make creature sounds for Tick-Tock the Crocodile.
Last night I watched the movie version of the musical Roberta, and Candy played one of the boys in Fred Astaire's band in it. I don't know if his song is on UA-cam, but it's called Let's Begin. In the course of the number he donned a blond wig with ringlets.
The alligator from Robin Hood is my favorite
Candy Candido Is One Off My Favourite Voice Actors RIP Candy Candido (1913 - 1999) From Benny Mufabiro. 😢😭💔
If you add the sounds for the tiger from Goofy in Tiger Trouble, then that explains why my pal Charlie Quigg pictured lions and tigers sounded like each other, same goes to liger and tigon. Plus I pictured larger theropods(e.g. Tyrannosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, Megalosaurus, Spinosaurus, Allosaurus, Dakotaraptor,Deinocheirus, Therizinosaurus, etc.) sounded like animal sounds by Candy Candido.
Fidget is my all time favorite Disney character. The Great Mouse Detective it's an overlooked gem and people need to add it to their watch list.
I love his voice
Neo and Brutus from the Rescuer, the Bear from The Fox and the Hound, the bear in Fun and Fancy Free, the wolf in Make Mine Music and the lion from Lambert the Sheepish Lion and all lion that look like Lambert isn't voiced by Candy Candido, but by James Macdonald. That's the same with all roars in all disney movie, all made by Jimmy Macdonald
How many lozenges did this guy need?
It also sounds like he got a jar for the perfect reverb for a lot of the growly monsters, especially with the roars. It wouldn't surprise me if he did.
You forgot Charlie Cuckoo in his own cartoon by Walter Lantz, Papa Ghost in "A Haunting We Will Go" (1939) and one of the cylinders in Ub Iwerks' Minitoons.
Thank you for this. 😅
Wild performance.
0:11 I loved his expression when he just walks out on stage
After watching this I have “one meatball” stuck in my head 😂
Candy "Lionroar" Candido
Crocodile Captain and Indian Chief will always be his best voices to me.
Well, it looks like Candy Candido voiced a tree in a live-action film twice.
The Late Christine Cavanagh is a good one.
Ashon Lewis Working on here now. I’ll have it out next week.
Ashon Lewis Working on hers now. I’ll have it out next week.
"But DAAAAAAD!" There might be COOOOOOOOL alien vampires!"
Interesting! My introduction to Candy Candido. Now I have to learn more.
Hmm Candy Candido. I recognized that deep raspy voice anywhere. Like with Chef from Peter Pan, accusing the lost boys of having anything to do with the disappearance of Tiger Lily when it was Hook’s doing. The animal impressions were really well done. Candy was in a few movies and animations I was familiar with like with Lampert the Sheepish lion, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Peter Pan, and Fox and the Hound.
*Chief
Disney SFX artist Jimmy MacDonald performed the animal vocal effects with the help of a chimney lamp. Those man-made growls and roars can be deceiving.
3:46 this is what I'm cooking on the grill right now
2:00 Roar sound in the jungle book
His voices is very deep
I'm surprised that he didn't lose his voice after doing such deep voices!
The last movie Candy did was The Great Mouse Detective, which just so happened to have Frank Welker. It almost felt like a passing of the torch from one animal actor to another
Just watched Babes in Toyland for the first time since I was a kid and the talking trees gave me déjà vu of the apple scene from Wizard of Oz. Sure enough, same guy! Disappointed Ray Bolger's Barnaby doesn't really interact with the trees except to lurk in bushes and watch them. It would have been a fun reunion!
Candy Candido was such a good actor.
R.I.P
1:44 this scene made up my childhood nightmares
I didn’t know he voiced a lot of characters
I just realized that The Phantom Tollbooth shows up a LOT in these videos.
can you do voices of Kevin Michael Richardson, please?
I had no idea he was the voice behind so many characters from my childhood :)
Many Voices of Charlie Callas
Like Sterling Holloway, Candido's cartoon voice(s) were exactly the same. Only the characters changed.
Next can you please do the voices of Sterling Holloway
Sarah McMann Yep. Already have his video ready to go. It’ll come out next week 😁
Saturday Morning Rewind thank you 😊
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Can you do the many voices of Jason griffith.
(Sonic the hedgehog Cilan and Darkar)
OMG!!! I didn't know he could actually go falcetto! D:
You forgot about The Mafia Messenger from Heavy Traffic and some of the Sub-humans from Fire and Ice.
I wish Candy Candido voiced Casey Jr in Dumbo (1941).
When I first saw "Fun and Fancy Free", that part @ 2:12 scared the shit out of me!
Mr. Candido also plays the Prisoner (known to many as Gus) in the Haunted Mansion. You can hear him in the individual Grim Grinning Ghost recordings (or 999 Happy Haunts on the soundtrack)
He's man behind the Disney Roar!
I seriously would love to know how he can make those growls, snarls and roars like he was a wild animal or a monster
That is an incredible talent to have
It may sound weird, but all those roars, snarls and growls were actually done by foley artist Jimmy MacDonald growling and emitting beast-like noises into a lamp chimney. All the growling Disney animals in this video are listed for MacDonald at disney.wikia and not Candido.
G Olden days
@Saturday Morning Rewind Could you do the many voices of Dan Green.
it’s very cool that i’m related to him 😀✨
So you definitely got to meet him :)
@@SherlockHoles2012 unfortunately i didn’t get to meet him, he passed away before i got the opportunity to :(
Man, Disney _really_ loved using his bear noises in their movies...
Cause they sound so cool
CHIEF!!! I knew I recognized that voice!!! :)
Watched Peter Pan again recently and thought god damn the chief had a great voice, had to find out who he was.
Candy Candido...the Voice of Range
Paul Frees, Daws Butler and Don Messick should be next.
There are videos available on UA-cam for each of them.
0:41 🐖 0:49 🐻 3:34 Indian chief 4:13 🐊 4:45 talking 🌳
Esse cara é um fera 🦁🐯
I think the Black Bear voice was my favorite. 0:48
How the actual hell did Candy pull off that deep voice? It sounds like it came right from his gut. At the very least, that voice definitely doesn't sound like it would come out of a white guy.
I'd love to see him recording those snarling sounds
Not that many voices, but the ones he had were good.
I did the math, he was 86 years old when he died.
