MAF’s do not like K&N style air filters that close to them, they also don’t like oil based air filters. An air straightener honeycomb might help. A dry sponge item would be much better that close to a MAF. In all honesty the factory filter is probably the best thing to use with that set up.
100% true and agree... those type filters are more problems than they are worth.
You just answered my question thanks
Right On, Completely True...
Those oiled air filters suck….literally
I had a k&n on my land rover discovery 2 diesel and had to put 2 or more mass airflow meters a year on after It would also cough in heavy rain so put genuine filler back and had no more problems.
Ray you forgot the most important thing in any repair. The KISS factor "Keep It Simple Stupid".
Sorry that camera sucks. Keep your great videos coming always enjoy watching.
Yea, I agree. Camera is not up to the standards that Ray already has. Contrast is way darker which looses detail and isn’t as smooth when moving it. Hope it just needs dialled in a bit and that’s not a slight on the cameraman, nope, no way.
😊
@@level1804 Agree as Ray has just gotten it, and left it at stock settings. Obviously, it's not an action cam as it actually has a focus apparatus, but leaving it in auto can be an issue as some cameras may not respond quickly enough, nor can they keep focus and just wonder.
So it may take time to figure it out, and get it set right. Even many action cams have settings that will allow you to get the best out of them and videos are out there for many cameras on just what to set yours to, to get the best out of it.
I think there’s a time and a place for that camera. It’s less of a 1 person working and filming job and more of a dedicated camera man piece of equipment.
@@hungryhungryhummer Seems that may be what he was using for this video. One reason I use GoPro as it's a one man band for my channel (me) and they do quite well for what they are and are a lot better than other lower end cameras as they do have more than basic auto functions, especially the Hero 12 that can shoot in timecode, shoot in log/lutz etc now even.
It's the new equipment jitters he'll figure it out and it won't be as bad.
Prima Facie observations: the default autofocus setting is a trainwreck for your intended use Ray, and the highlights are overblown with a yellowish hue (e.g. your bare arms) -- if you can test/tweak the camera some more over the weekend to correct those issues, I think the new equipment may be a winner (the clarity of the scan tool's text is amazing once the autofocus stops hunting and settles down). Your explanation of the science behind the MAF sensor was outstanding -- why people go with a finicky aftermarket air intake on these blown F150s instead of retaining the OEM Ford-engineered performance unit is beyond me. Final thought: Dave's a SUPER NICE GUY, you'd be wise to do whatever you can to keep him in your shop.
Snake oil type stuff they sell for cars... Belt dressing, head gasket sealer, stop leak and these types of air filters.
Clean the filter with mineral spirit - removes the old filter oil and dirt, then wash out with hot soapy water, rinse, then dry fully before applying new filter oil ;)
100% true... or jjust get a stock filter and be done with it...
I would have used Brake Clean first then let it air dry. Using water on an oily looking filter won't do much.
As soon as I saw that K&N air filter, I thought bingo, they need regular cleaning.
I out one in my BMW motorcycle B.I T.D. and brand new, the bike developed a huge flat spot in the power band at about 3,500 RPM, I pulled it off and scheiss canned it.
Dave’s a good worker
When you first panned over the air filter, I could tell it was on its way out. I have had so many cars that 9 times out of 10 the air filter was the culprit. I was told years ago from a couple of mechanics if car won't start, has issues staying started, feels like it is choking, check the air filter first. There is also a split between those mechanics for using a throw away filter or a permanent one just maintain properly since price of filters were close and cheap especially at the time. It also depends where you live and drive, can make a filter's life too.
What do you think about k&n's? Was debating on putting one in my 5.3L.
Airraid owned by K&N. I am a tech with over 30 yrars experience and they are more teouble than they are worth.
@@ohiowrencher8650I would agree with you. I have been licensed in the trade for 30+ years and from what I've seen all of those reusable filters are pretty much useless for the regular daily driver, as well as most cold air intake systems. Most of the time the problem is user error. They either don't get installed properly or maintained properly, if at all. Stick to your good quality regular disposable filter.
When your smoke test didn't come out of the filter that was an indication the filter is plugged.
9:18 ill agree that K&N filters seen better days, its reusable not neglectable you still have to clean them and charge them with oil, not a gallon of oil just a light coat.
The problem is people dont clean them or use too much oil on them.
Wash it with soap, dry it and lightly coat it. Between washes just blow it out from the inside to the outside.
Speaking of i should do my wife's car ive had a recharge kit for a year.
My bet is the filters clogged from the body work and pretty paint job the cabin filters dirty too I'm gonna bet.
There is an elbow on the rear of the lower intake manifold. It cracks and leaks. It's common amongst these vehicles and lightnings
Yup look up turkey pan mod. Also, it’s usually deleted and plugged with an npt plug, worth cleaning out all the oil from the intercooler while it’s apart. Also plugs and coils are much easier to get caught up on while that’s all apart. Oem motorcraft for the coils are the best for these trucks, msd and accel coils air known to be weak and go out in a very short amount of time. Some dish soap or degreaser would have cleaned that filter real good, how is just water going to clean oil residue, spray the water from inside out not outside in.
I also thought that was a nasty greasy filter.
Dawn dishwashing liquid might work cleaning that filter.🤔 It's gentile on wildlife, should be good for air filters! 😁
I really like the way that you explain the functions instead of assuming that we know. I’m old school diy mechanic and have rebuilt many cars over my 61 years of life. I’m learning how to diagnose the computer problems by testing connections and components. The mechanical aspect hasn’t changed excessively over the years but the electronics have. Thank you for all you do, I really enjoy your videos
Was getting dizzy with this camera, but very good info on the evap system. Thank you Ray
I can see moisture coming out of your air gun. You should open the drain cock on the bottom of the air compressor and drain out the accumulated water before it rots out the tank. ( I used to build air compressors)
You are a tricky character getting us to watch filter washing, and drying
It's a 5.4 liter 2-valve Supercharged V-8. It's a sign of things to come later
Socks that can also serve as air filters would be a nice store item.
This is what happens when you only drive your truck 5,000 miles a year!
MERCH BABY! Very cool stuff!
Best way to learn new equipment is to just start using it imo. Thanks for sharing your mechanicing adventures with us, far more fun to watch you turn wrenches than to do it myself!
no joke.!!!
Learning more on the fuel trims. Thanks for you help!
Thumbs up to Dave!!
He he he, Ray you need to read the new camera user manual soon, your white balance and overture settings are psychedelic. :D
LOL!! At the beginning of the video, I was yelling at the TV for you to clean the air filter (properly, cleaned & re-oiled) to fix the problem!!!!!
I've used K&N filters on all of my vehicles for 25+ years, with no issues, so I know to keep them cleaned at proper intervals & re-oil them (light spray, not dripping!!).
I don’t think it’s anything to do with the filter cleanliness specifically. I suspect it’s the way the cone filter is directing the air flow over the MAF, it’s likely disturbing the airflow due to the end of the filter being close to the MAF. I’ve had a similar issue with a vehicle previously which was resolved by putting a smoother transition between the filter and MAF (or you could use an air straightener).
Check the MAF g/s value with the filter on and off to confirm an airflow disruption. I expect you’ll see a higher value with it off at the same rpm, which would explain the positive fuel trims and lean codes.
Something very common with these motors is the PCV hose that comes off of the 90 degree elbow on the lower backside of the intake manifold. A lot of times the hose will collapse. The hose will come off of the IAC valve and come to a T the hose that leads to the back of the motor is the one you'll want to check. Most of the lightning guys end up deleting that hose and blocking off the 90 degree fitting. If you search for SVT Lightning Turkey Pan delete it will show you more about it. Just something to check especially for those 2 trouble codes.
Dave’s the man.
Need to hack into the exposure settings. It's sitting high. And the autofocus is hunting, must be a setting for that too
I didn't think the audio quality was as good on this video either. The video issues others have mentioned can probably be adjusted with camera settings though.
Man that is smart as hell to bring your merch in house. The quality will be extremely enhanced and you’ll see your profit margins increase by 45% in 4 months
The layout on your new merchandise section is easy to navigate. Gonna be picking up a Nice & Shiny T-shirt after payday! Can't wait to see some more designs show up.
Edit: I think any item with the neon sign logo that's usually opening your videos would be popular, as well as a "Gravity" design...
+1 on Gravity
Glad Dave is getting more used to the camera.
Dave crawls under truck to get away from the camera.
Ray grabs camera and chases Dave under truck.
Dave is later videoed spreading an accelerant around the shop.
Now, I'm not suggesting arson just to avoid Rays harassment and near constant surveillance, but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As with many repairs, the simplest one is usually the case. Like others that have commented, go with the OEM filter. Use the K&N style filters on carbureted engines, if you must.
The cable moving under such a huge current is pretty normal. The current from the starter generates a pretty substantial magnetic field, which repels itself if it's not perfectly aligned. The wire is not in a straight line, so it will want to push itself outward.
The same thing happens with coils which will want to expand and push themselves apart under large field strength, or vibrate (buzz or whine) when there's an alternating current.
The camera quality is a lot better... when it's in focus 😉 The audio though... it sometimes has a bit of sharpness to it that makes my speakers crackle at moments... seems the microphone can't handle all of it, maybe limit the gain.
Hey! I just learned how a MAF sensor works! I knew WHAT they did, but had no idea HOW.
Great video again Ray, apart from the camera. Contrast is too dark and looses detail and depth. Hopefully just a setting and easily changed.
I have used dish soap and hot water to clean my K&N filters.
Let the filter dry. A wet filter will be restrictive.
I bet that filter is still good.
New camera does great @Rainman Ray's Repairs. Just need to figure out the settings for bokeh or Depth of Field focus (DOF). Basically the camera is trying to put what it thinks is the subject in focus while blurring the background. Good looking truck too!!
Common thing on these trucks either a Lightning or A by Harley(Supercharged version) when dealing with lean code, it’s usually a rubber 90 on the turkey pan(Lower intake) that’s connected to the Pass side PCV system that rubber 90 tends to dry rot and crack, a common fix is to delete that with a npt plug and some high temp thread sealant , I have it on my 01 lightning in Cali the check engine light won’t turn on and will still pass emissions.
I'm sure that's why he wrote this title like this, but in electronics, "smoke test" means something totally different.
Clever.
Like Dave he is perfectly fitting in.
So everyone says that you are using a new camera. I think that you somehow installed the SUN inside the building. Things are much brighter and I had to get my shades out to watch this video.
Nice truck and a great video as always!
I hada 1997 F-150 single cab stepside. We rebuilt it from the frame up, put a modem coyote V8 with super charger, 5 speed manual, lowered it, painted it in the 2 tone HD color and it's a awesome truck ! Always wanted a HD F-150 but they were too expensive so just built my own !
I was having the same error codes but didn’t have a smoke tester. I looked in the area that you found the leaks and found mine in the same area. 😊
Love the store so far, hope to see more products in there, love watching your videos from Australia, keep up the good work
I must now come back and comment on your webpage: I *love* the "Reject all" cookies option 👌
I found your channel when you was at the dealership, loved watching them. Since you have had your own shop it is even better, more content,
Love the wife unit as well, I watch every day.
What happened to the female who was helping the wife, Dave seems like a nice guy.
That’s a really futuristic Ford Lightning
Its a harley davidson edition, not a lightning
It's possible that you have a weak vacuum line. And when the filters on, then it causes higher pressure of suction collapsing the line.
yeh, why else would a clogged filter (less air) cause it to add fuel?
@@fuzzy1dk it's breaking my brain as well.
The air filter had nothing to do with the vacuum lines, the vacuum lines were just rotted out from age and possibly oil/fuel exposure encouraged them to fall apart.
Filter was a whole separate problem of its own.
Plus, those vacuum lines are likely subjected to full manifold vacuum which also happens to be at its highest vacuum during idler and part throttle vacuum, which is when the filter is passing very little air compared to wide open throttle, and then you have almost no vacuum, and in this case, positive pressure from the supercharger within the manifold.
Thank you Ray for upgrading the merch
Suggestion for additional merchandise: kid’s tees with something like Rainman Ray’s apprentice mechanic.
about the camera, brightness can be lowered little bit :)
yeah this F150 is a good looking. first time i saw one was in FastFurious 1
I have had to clean and re-use filters that had an oil film that were dirty, so i used aome "awesome degreaser" with water in a small bucket.
Mom just loves it when you appropriate the tupperware for garage work.
But it saves detergents and chemicals.
Once it sits in that solution awhile, you can then do warm water, and let it dry.
Spread the ribs to get the chunks out, repeat the process.
The new filter being on order, you have an interim part for your rig.
Or a testing continuation part.
Love,
Gjetto filtre conceps.
I do believe that the filter was not dry enough when you tried to re-check your fuel trim measurements. I always enjoy your videos. great tips for the handy capable do it yourself guy's
The ecm was probably reading it as a dirty filter
Not sure what you mean. ECMs can not detect clenliness.. the MAF measures airflow and the air intake temp sender reads temperature..
That was my thought
@@michaelpressman7203 all the ECM is being told by the mass air flow sensor is the amount of air coming in & the temperature of that air, the trouble with cone filters that close to a MAF is the air is swirling round & round & not passing over the element in a controlled path. The MAF hasn’t a clue what’s going on with the air flow hence the ECM just chucking fuel at the problem.
He just used the wrong term, many people would say the ecm is reading it as a dirty filter, which really means the ecm isn’t seeing enough air flow and can’t regulate the fuel trims because of 5hat b
Great filter cleaning video. 😉
Holy smokes. The clarity on the new camera is fantastic 🏅
The first Ford Lightning to come from 979 years in the future!
Its actually not a lightning. Its a Harley davidson edition. Can tell by all the harley badges on the seat, fender, plaque on the center console, key, etc.
The website is easy to navigate. My only gripe is that you either need to add an apostrophe to "RAYS" (because you own it) OR, get another RAY!
Looking forward to part #2 Have a great weekend
I don't know why anyone would screw a Harley Davidson truck up and change the paint color.
Those filters especially on the ford f150’s always throw those codes. They pull in way too much dirt and dust. I removed mine put stock intake back in and had to clean everything. The throttle body and Mass airflow sensor were a mess. I agree if you don’t know what you’re doing with vehicles, leave it alone.
This is a perfect video to show why regular servicing the filters is important. It is also a good video to show why those K&N aftermarket filters aren't great either.
The camera needs to learn how you do things Ray...the end result was good though.
Keep up the excellent content🙂
This will be one of a kind collector's truck! I remember them new! Awesome truck with an aditudee! Fun reliable Ford! Back when Ford actually made quality!
I like that new camera you are using, once you get all the small stuff figured out, it will be a great addition.
Thank you so much. I've got a similar issue with my car, having similar code, but limited options to diag. with.
While I knew it wasn't vacuum related, (rebuilt engine w/ many new parts) I'm pretty sure the issue is the incomplete aftermarket intake.
Now I know how to fix it, so thank you.
Welcoming back!
A wet air filter will cause some restrictions. But could the mass airflow sensor also be in need of replacement?
MAFs may or may noy be helped by a cleanimg. Oil impregnated filters can damage them. A good quick test is that with all accessories off, the reading of the MAF should be close to the engines displacement im liters. I
E. 4.7 grams a second on a 4.6 engine. Close enough
May be different om a supercharged engine though. Generally supercharged or turbos have their own type of MAf
.. a regular f150 MAF for the same engine size may niot work properly.
Clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and replace the filter
@@GT-ub8lp Thank You!!
@@GT-ub8lp and there still could be some more vacuum leaks but Im sure Ray will figure it out.
🎉😂 I would recommend a brake clean fluid bath for that air filter.
Clean it with dawn dish soap. Its gonna need more than just water lol
Need a new filter altogether
I was eyeballing that filter from the start. It just looked bad. I'd run some Seafoam cleaner spray through the throttle body. Clear any carbon built up. It's pretty obvious it's been run hard.
I just heard a good one about the falcon heavy lift that blew up,musks team called it rapid deconstruction
Prompted me to clean the K and N filter on my hot rod. I used the special K and N cleaner.
A lot of dirt came out even though it did not look dirty. I guess it has been a while since I cleaned it. Also need to dry it out and use the special K and N oil before installation. Also sometimes the K and N filters are beyond cleaning and need to be replaced if the media is damaged or cannot be cleaned out properly.
Nice looking truck 👍🏻
I have a capture and kill policy on those types of filters when they come to me.
Loved the typo in the notification lead- in. Working on a vehicle the hasn't been built for another 979 years.😂
The cable jumped during cranking because the large currents out of the charger and into the starter have strong magnetic fields associated with them. These fields interact and make the cables attract each other (currents in the same direction) or repel each other (currents in opposite directions.) Since the negative lead from the charger and the negative lead to the starter are along side each other, and have currents flowing in opposite directions, they try to move apart, and if the alligator clamp isn't secure, the cable will twitch and move a little.
I've seen the tidily paired, but unrestrained, starter cables for a 250kW Paxman diesel jump about a foot apart when the starter pinion engaged the ring gear and momentarily 'shorted' the battery thru the ultra-low resistance of the non-turning starter.
A 6 speed would really make that truck a monster
But very fast 4 it's era
I've found over the past couple decades that the best way to clean an Airaid is to simply soak the filter in a bucket with water and Dawn or Joy and let the fine dust naturally leave the filter element. Rinse the filter with running water from the inside out then repeat. Spraying the Airaid from the outside to give it a shower won't do anything to clean ir except trap the fine dust into the filter material.
Or, you can simply call Airaid and they will send you a new one for free.
I don't know Ray, first you make me watch you drown an air cleaner...and now I gotta go buy a hat !!!!!!
Hey Ray, just something I noticed with the new filming equipment, it seemed like the handheld shots don't have as much image stabilization as your previous videos. Probably just a default setting that is turned off or something.
Ray, merch store looking good. I might make a suggestion. If possible maybe have some shirts that go to 4XL for those of us on the more fluffy side. 😁
@Astrand1?si=lovk_pt136rUctJ_ :
😁😁😁😁
I would have thrown a stock paper filter back in there in place of the crappy cotton/oil filter and also cleaned the MAF sensor since you're already in there.
Stock won’t fit, it’s not a stock air box.
Edit: Probably can’t source a stock box for that supercharged engine either. Just clean the filter with good soap or solvent and let it dry, without using an air hose on it, oil, and put it back it.
@@ralfie8801 I thought it came with a conical paper filter in that era
@@LA_Commander
It might have been an option, but some didn’t. It’s possible one is available. I have the same one Ray has (Banks) in his truck in mine, and when I bought it years ago in 2007, I don’t remember there being a paper filter available for it, but there is now. I’ve always preferred the oiled filters and have never had any problems with them. The reason I know there’s a dry filter for mine is because I noticed my original filter had deteriorated after 415K + miles and needed to be replaced. The dry filter is the same price as the oiled one, so I went that way again.
Hopefully there is enough work left on this truck for a part two
I love watching the modular motors get diagnosed, any thing I can apply to the thought process of my 4.6 pony from 2001 and god knows what year that Lincoln swapper that’s in it is is good for what’s left of my brain
Years of maintenance neglect but it’s got a sweet paint job. 😂😂😂 priorities.
First thing I saw was a dirty air filter but thought "that's toooo easy" LOL.
Please do a follow up video and share what else you found. Thanks.
Love the programs Ray always waiting to see what problem child you have to diagnose next also checked out your merchandise looks good as well but I'm sure you be adding more later but al in keep up the great work all of you !😁
If you put a filter on and it tries to enrichen the fuel mix, there is a leak downstream, if you pull it off and it goes to normal, the leak is not great enough to overcome the vacuum of the dirty filter.. its got something still leaking after the filter element.
It shows that a proper check, you can mis other problems and it may or will lead to other problems
I don't know if they have them where you are but where I live, Autozone has a filter that looks exactly like AirRaid and K&N, but they're just visibly that way and shaped the same. You replace them like a normal filter. They're made for people who want that look, or who get tired of maintaining those high dollar ones, I guess. But, that would be a way to replace that filter if they carry them down there. I use to use them myself back many years ago on a Dodge truck I had. They had yellow, red, and blue...no black so I guess not to violate any copyright stuff maybe. Worked well and allowed the look without the price. Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there in case. Mr Dave becoming more comfy with the camera. You'll have him doing his own filming before long for the channel. OH, and also, if you find it troublesome to do your own merch look into Bunker Branding out in Texas. Demolition Ranch, Ginger Billy, and other 'tubers' use him, and it's owned by Demo Ranch Matt. Good product, good quality.
Pt 2: the shirts hats sticker and mugs suggestion was to display your current logo (you tube videos). Sorry for the incomplete thought.
"Bet you didn't think you'd watch a guy clean an air filter..."
If you only knew what I watched day to day. lol
Merch looks good. Will get around and get me a hat. Need a new one and can't find any in my area that I like.
You can put a filter on a stick or jack handle and blow it out and rotate it centrifugal action.
Shop vac filter works also
Love the merch so far, would like to see a 2x wife unit shirt and a 3x Ray shirt.
That would make for great gifts for a family friend.
Was wondering if new camera has stabilization? Watching on TV all the bouncing is rough😵💫
I knew that that filter was junk as soon as I saw it
same.!!!!
I never did like a brown air filter, that was first thing I noticed, and I hope your not over working Dave, I'm sure he doesn't want to hang around the garage all night...........
PS, I might be interested in blaze orange hunting cap.........
Hello Dave and welcome
I wash my gauze filters in a warm mix of DAWN dish soap and use the 'Wife Units' tooth brush to scrub the muck off.
I also love it when they say it’s got a million mile filter warranty I don’t have to clean it hahaha
About your merchandise, How about a Rays brake clean water bottle that you can throw onto the garage floor occasionally? perhaps a metal one to provide realisic sound effects?
