Hey Ray Ray. Thanks for doing my trailer tires last month. I work at dorman and I was a quality engineer from 2016 until 2022. When I started the warranty Rate was over 50% and I got it down to less than 15% before I took a higher position in Dorman. They've really turned the focus more toward quality.

I just bought and installed a Dorman coolant reservoir on my 2011 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and so far that bottle is solid. It got awesome reviews from everyone who bought one and it saved me about $75 compared to the Motorcraft part. I also likes what Dorman did with the heater hose for my truck. Replacing the stupid plastic "Y" pipe with an aluminum pipe. Nice job!

I hated doing electronics warranty work. The pay was crap for all the effort. But there was part of me which just would not allow me to do a half- axxed minimal repair for warranty. I always looked for other potential problems- mostly bad solder joints (Just love that horrible lead free solder) and repaired them. I had close to zero call back rate (.01 %) and refused to compromise on my work standard and ethic, even if it cost more time and effort. At least I could go home feeling that my work was above standard quality for the industry.

Ray, you didn't look at the instructions that came with the new phaser. The bolt is a torque to yield. The new bolt has to be torqued to 30 lb-ft, then turned an additional 90 degrees. 1:07:20 Ray has made possibly the most common, and most commonly got away with, mistake when working on a car’s electrical system. When disconnecting the battery, you should always do so at the ground side, which is almost always the negative, nowadays.
That prevents you shorting out the battery, with a carelessly dropped tool, or while reconnecting it.
Have to put my hand up, here, and admit I do it too, because I’m lazy and I’m confident I won’t drop anything across the positive post.
I’m normally right, too. Only happened once, but I was careful for a long time afterwards and only fell back into only disconnecting the easy terminal in recent years. I still tell everyone else, do as I say, not as I do.

Living precariously through your troubles and tribulations of these repairs is entertaining in its self, sometimes I’d give away my fortunes ( I have no fortune 😂) for a quick fix and a oil change but that ain’t real life.
Ray don’t let the comment section get you down brother, you’ll go crazy over a minority of viewers that you ain’t going to please looking to point out something thing to complain about, when you open yourself/life out for public display there will be jerks yanking your chain.
It’s disheartening to know that it’s getting under your skin, Ray..we all love you and your content. Don’t get involved in these internet flame wars, there’s no winners just opinions and like azzholes everybody’s got one.
Watching you go through jobs with a joke and a smile and just persevere is remarkable ! 🙂

Yes sometimes I feel I’m watching rainman rays little garage of horrors, but that’s your charm, you never know what is coming in the door and it works and is part of my morning routine at work.

That cam phaser has a tty bolt. Did you replace phaser with the old bolt? Also blue lock tight should be used on the bolt. These triton engines are great engines but to get long life out of them they need new timing chains, upgraded oil pumps, and ratchet style lock metal tensioners, not the cheap factory plastic ones. And the phasers also need lockouts installed. The tune isn't necessary after lockouts if the engine light being on don't bother the customer. The tune basicly just turns off vcts and clears engine light. And you failed to torque the bolt to spec.

The difference in the phaser is the old design vs new. They changed the thickness of the spring and added that stud to hold more tension on the spring. I know the wedge seems sketchy but we changed tons of 3V Mustang cams using those and never had one slip if wedged tightly like you did. The chain guides have a lip to them so it can only move so much.
That said the only thing i saw was the phaser bolt install. It is a torque to yield and should be replaced anytime it is removed. It is 30 ft/lbs plus 90 degrees on the bolt. It is hollow to pass oil to the phaser. If over/under torqued they are known to collapse and back out. If this happens, it usually eats the cam and the phaser and sometimes the timing cover and valve cover.
I also realize this is warranty work so they may have cheaped on that as well.

    • @GaryH-pw9cm

I hate those tiny Hy-Vo chains.
Heck of a coincidence to have the riveted link showing on a chain as long as the one in that motor (darker with paint mark, ~8:45)
Personally, I would have turned crank backwards a few degrees to preload tensioner, particularly if it's hydraulic/mechanical, installed wedge then turned forward again to lock things in position (plus get a little more slack?)
Years ago, (80's) Kawasaki used even smaller hy-vo on GPZ600.
It wore out in as little as 18,000 miles.
Honda 750/900/1000 at least lasted to about 35,000~50,000 miles and that was mainly due to poor servicing which caused 'long' tensioner to fail (it had two)

Oh the memories of warranty work, bad ones. At least the scrimping is confined to the replacing of items and not the labor. The labor hits were more than I could take. The manufacturers dictated how much they'd pay for a job, not how long it actually took or what's fair. Good to see your reassembly talents in action, as usual they are top notch. Thanks.

Also fyi yes bro the weather up here in indiana sucks right now. Snow with 50 to 70mph gusts of wind which first started as a cold rain then the temp dropped quickly overnight. The high in my town today was negative ten degrees Fahrenheit with a 20 degree below windchill. My vehicles were so cold that they barely wanted to start. Many people who didnt turn their water to a trickle have frozen burst pipes. And i spent most of the early morning and day out helping people get in their cars or pulling them out of being stuck cuz kr the ice.

Not sure how many of these you do but, to keep the cam from moving get 2 pair of vise grips and sintch down between the lobes somewhere and lock them down so that yoyr hitting frame and fyel rail on the different pliers that way it cant move either way. (RADIO EDIT) Seen you use a set of vise grips right after clicking send on this comment lmao 🤣 . Ur good lol As usual you come up with an acceptable workaround on every job. *hint: only a small percentage of us can adapt and keep moving in situations like this, so be proud. Years of running construction jobs has taught me that most folks dont have the sense God gave a billy goat, and i dont say that with malice its just a cold fact.

These videos motivate me to get on it. @ timestamp 15:49 I'm guessing that the old Cam Phaser missing the pin is the source of your clicking (moving spring). I too have noticed Doorman's increase in quality. I don't seek them out, but they have definitely come up. When I have been forced to use them, they have come through lately.

I did this job on my '05 Ford expedition. Stuck plugs, both phasers, cam tensioners and guides. I didn't buy a tool to hold the chain in place. Buddy of mine worked in a machine shop, so I went to a Ford dealer and measured the tool and made a print. Then I took the print to my buddy gave him a six pack of his favorite beer, and he made me a tool.😂😂😂 Ended up also having a blown up roller follower, which dinged up the cam. So I ended up replacing the cam the follower and lifters. When the roller follower came apart it also popped the cap off of the top of the valve stem so my valve dropped but it didn't bend. I was able to lift the valve up and press the spring put the cap on without pulling the head. It was a two-day job and I hated every minute of it. After doing it in my driveway, I vowed never to buy that engine ever again!!! After I was done it cranked on the first time and I traded that thing off!!!!!

As soon as I heard them ask you to run the engine without the valve covers would have been the first red flag that, if I were in your shoes, I would have flatly turned down this job. I mean, I know it makes for great UA-cam content, but seriously, I don't know how you are handling the stress of being manipulated into doing maintenance operations that you are not comfortable with.

Good that you don't tighten the cover fasteners yet before sorting out that vacuum line. But weird that subsequently you don't reattach the steering shaft before putting in the rest of the hoses and brackets.

    • @shakerman55

Ray gets in a hurry towards the end. When he got the tube to come loose, he should have put the steering shaft back together. Instead, he let it go and said, “I’ll get that later”. Every time he does that he forgets and then has to do it the hard way. But it makes for humorous content.😂
