I've seen my fair share of planned expansions to games becoming sequels, but I can't say I've ever seen an update for a game marketed as a sequel before.
I've seen worse, downgrades to a game being called sequels (Destiny 2). At least they turned that game around, but anyone who remembers pre-Forsaken D2 will tell you it was literally just D1 but worse and with less in every area.
*to by all the old Overwatch 1 cosmetics it's over $12,000 for a new f2p player. Which is insane that assumes you buy the $100 discounted currency bundles too.
No way in hell I'm spending 38 weeks grinding for 1 old legendary skin. I'm glad I got a ton of legendaries that I love and carried all my stuff over. I should've known there would be a catch. "Oh you can port everything over... but you can only get 60 coins per week and legendaries you don't have will now be 1900 coins instead of 1000 😈"
@@GoznerPeter well, out side of bragging rights, skins are one of the few tangible goals to reach through playing the game, at least in OW1. That is what kept a bunch of people playing after OW1 stopped getting big updates. It sparked interest into people during dry spells of the game or when nothing really happens that you're interested in. Take that away or make it painful to do, and you lose the interest of a lot of people.
"We're removing end card because seeing stats at the end of the game leads to toxicity, but we added a scoreboard where you can see everyone's stats whenever you want"
Honestly though the cards at the end of the game were kind of trash anyway. They weren’t really any measure of how well someone did, it was more like this Ana got the most healing, or that soldier got the most damage.
This comment illustrates exactly how things keep getting worse. When Blizzard starts harvesting children's organs we'll all say "I miss the days when all they did was sell cyanide".
Be honest. With the fact that overwatch was dying and quite literally falling from grace. Will it be more appealing to bring back players if they said Overwatch 1.158.6? Or overwatch 2 is more attracting?
@@rmhminiman they wouldn't have had to rely on such tricks, and OW1 wouldn't be dying, if they didn't pretty much leave it completely dead and without updates for years. All to release this "sequel" that's just an update in the end.
I love it when you can display your achievements in video games, taking away the borders and stars really sucks, and taking away the medals feels like it ruins the flow almost
The thing is, achievements display shows your achievements, i.e. things that you have worked on and proven worthy of. They don't want you to be good and worthy, they want you to see other players' skins and envy them so that you'd be inclined to spend money on those skins (looking at you specifically here, MW2-2). These days you're supposed to brag with how much you spent, not how good you are.
The medal system sucked and encouraged toxicity. You could have gold damage and still play like shit but the player would simply refuse to listen because GoLd mEDaLs brO
@@yoanski2559 it's exactly the same with the scoreboard. "Dude you have less elims than me" - the Moira/Genji who does just 20 damage to a hero but got the kill, so they are obviously the best, despite not having a clue about what they are ment to be doing.
I think I've seen it before, at least as far as maps go. There is maybe a bit more to it. Like for example if you have too huge a map pool, the chance of some appearing will become statistically low. I don't actually know how this works in Overwatch (mostly random?), but some shooters also let players vote for next map. If players have some favorite maps and some they like less, then naturally the favorite ones will get voted repeatedly while the others are collecting dust in the map pool. You as a dev might then wonder why you should retain some older ones in the first place and unreasonably bloat up the map pool or the game itself when you at the same time also have to at least create some new maps to both give reason to releasing a sequel and accomodating a different team setup (5 vs. 5) and modes. That being said it could be worse, like a game removing content without releasing a sequel, see Destiny 2 and them having "vaulted" large chunks of content, some of which people had paid for.
This video gets funnier now that blizzard have Just completely killed the main pve mode they advertised for years that was meant to give a fucking reason for this game existing lmao.
After having a handful of jobs, I've realized that many businesses truly are held together by just a few people who understand the bigger picture and actually work hard to get there. I think Blizzard has lost a lot of those people.
Many, if not all, organizations are like this. Western gaming really feels the squeeze as the auteurs have all been ousted by their publishers, and new "talent" gets pushed in for quotas. The games themselves are just quotas now.
Very true but we can't expect anyone to parade behind an ideal if they're still having fun with said product. I wouldn't blame them either. Ignorance is B L I S S.
"toxic" really is a understatement in this case, their work environment has to be the most predatory, demeaning, nasty, degenerate and downright rapey i ever read about
One of the most annoying parts of this "sequel" is the fact that skins cost real money, or 5% of your life's time, which is a lot. I would rather have loot boxes again.

Fun Fact: the "On Fire" mechanic was NOT removed actually, you can still hear the voice lines of it You can still earn fire by doing your average actions, its just the visual of being on fire was removed..? Im pretty sure what happened is when development started the first thing they did is port over the code, seems reasonable, but for some reason they did not wanted the on fire anymore so they removed the line of code for the lil bar but NOT the actual on Fire code soo yea.. If someone somehow finds it we can have a functional fire metter again.
I mean, this is literally just an update. They ported over 90% of the code at least. I'm loving OW2 so far in all honesty, but it's so clearly Overwatch 1 that the app that installs on your PC is called Overwatch. And not Overwatch 2 if you search for it.
Actually, it was removed last minute or something because the voicelines for it are brand new for the old heroes aswell as the old ones. So they not only went through the effort to get new voicelines, but also implement them and still left out the visual.
A video game is not just one big line of code. Most programmed applications take advantage of classes, and assuming that the visual function is removed, the class responsible for visually displaying the mechanic was disabled. Also I would bet that they removed the function because the mechanic did not accurate feedback, and leads players into the wrong direction in terms of skill.
They just don't want you flexing in any way possible. Can't have visual stimulus that makes you appear better than other players. Don't worry about whos good or not, just go check out the battle pass.
At this point i wouldnt be surprised if they just removed the lil sprite animation used for the on fire so it still plays but is invisible as asset isnt there.
Can I just point out the irony of a company known for sexual harassment cases promoting diversity and equality through their heroes. Maybe get more heroes in your workspace first, the message would feel slightly more genuine, Bobby.
They abandoned OW1 for 3 years since they were aparently working on PVE for OW2. Well, now PVE is officially canceled. OW2 was literally just an excuse to make the game free to play and lock heroes behind a battlepass
Let’s just be honest games just been getting killed over an over an while they killing the game they also playing us for our money an milking the in game store
really glad you touched on the lootboxes before. while lootboxes generally suck in overwatch they used to actually be not that big of a deal because you could really grind a lot of them and unlocking many things without paying anything. this new shop is for sure worse than what it used to be
It’s mainly since like you said they weren’t too hard to grind and were cosmetic only. Unlike say the supply drops in COD games from AW through BO4. I’d always take paid only cosmetics over supply drops with weapons in them that change stats and make the game pay to win. But in this case, not only was it not that situation (so now there is no way at all to reasonably earn cosmetics instead of a flawed way, something is better than nothing, but it also is incredibly disrespectful to the people who bought the first game since you can’t just go back to it. Doubly so since you don’t earn credits back from the battle pass, forcing you to pay up every season.
Agreed. It was nice to know that whenever a new skin I really liked was released I could just grind the game a bit to either get a lucky pull or build up enough currency. Makes you fond of the times that games rewarded you for playing the game instead of just begging for your card info
@@spunch1205 Still doesn’t beat the relatively really old times when skins were for things like achievement rewards and skill based tasks rather than monetized… I miss those days when you paid $60 for the game and got the whole game, no questions asked, and it worked immediately from day one. Back in the Wii era (I was and still am a Nintendo person). I’m not positive if the 360 and PS3 era were mostly or totally like that, but it was probably better than now. It makes me really happy that games like Elden Ring, which is one of the very few non indie games to return to that style, sold so well. It gives me hope that we may someday return to that style of game. Sure some games be $70 due to inflation, but that’s totally reasonable imo for a complete well made game, especially with how much money goes into graphics now (Separate argument, but I think we’d have much better games if we took that money going towards graphics, made games look more cartoony (or lower poly) or pixelated and spent that time making amazing levels and mechanics rather than filling games with meaningless bloat and or grind. After all, just look at the incredible indie market nowadays)
@Calvin Robertson True. The difference here is that the loot boxes were free, the battle pass is not (or all the $20 separate skins jeez) That’s the problem. Plus they had dupe protection (for much of the game life anyway) and we’re cosmetic only. Something is better than nothing for free progression. ESPECIALLY for those who bought the first game and had it stripped from them. If we could play OW1 I’d have much less of an issue, since it’s still scummy, but at least you could earn stuff more for the first game and stay with it if you wanted, but you can’t)

I hate how many games are just becoming a second job. You wanna know where your game's toxicity comes from? Making your players hate it as much as a soul-crushing 9 to 5.
The worst is GTA5 online. God help you if you're a new player in 2023. This old ass milked to death game is about as rewarding as a minimum wage at McDonald's, and the open world is so toxic and filled with oppressors that you literally have to play it in a private lobby with reduced pay on missions. The missions aren't treated as part of the game, they just interrupt the actual fun you have messing around to go drive 30 minutes to the middle of nowhere so that you can get like 5000 dollars to work towards buying a doge charger that costs 2 million dollars 😂
I'll never understand why they removed medals, the on fire mechanic, post game cards, border levels etc to reduce toxicity, but then added a scoreboard where everyone can see how bad certain players are doing at all times
It's so that everyone can be held accountable, if I'm doing jack shit on my widow maker pick I can't shit on my support teammates since I'm not killing their threats.
@@Crit7k that answers the question of "Why add a scoreboard?". The question that was asked, though, was "Why remove medals if you aren't going to obfuscate the stats?". The reality is that they probably removed the medals, then realised during play testing that people don't enjoy having literally zero feedback or recognition for playing well, so added in the scoreboard to fix the problem they introduced. It is nonsensical to replace medals with a scoreboard for the purpose of lowering toxicity. The people who piss and whine now have permanent access to their team mates' stats which they can use as a weapon. At least with medals it only showed who did well, rather than who was doing badly. This stinks of some team lead demanding that medals are removed, and the devs below them introducing a work around that makes the problem worse because they have no choice.
I never thought that being able to play games for free would be one of the worst things to happen to gaming but the free-to-play model is really proving me wrong.
The irony of this is that when you play(ed) games for free "the old fashioned way" (yarrrgh) the worst thing that could happen was a hard drive reformat to get rid of the dodgy crap that scuttled over. I saw it with Rocket League and the community went steadily downhill from there, imo. When they went from loot boxes to free to play, battle pass, and an item shop the community slowly warped into a cesspool by attrition. You can definitely tell the developers were forced to take the fastest possible path to release the game to market. According to Overwatch's lead creative director Bobby Kotick alone is responsible for the game being many many months behind schedule since he wanted them chasing trends implementing battlepass crap and stupid stuff from cod then constantly changed his mind. Entire teams of developers turned over citing Bobby Kotick as the main reason

Literally yesterday I fought a Sombra main who made our life's hell. Yet she literally played well and we could easily counter her by just thinking. It was a good type of getting beaten and I wasn't allowed to endorse them :/ At least I told them through chat
Lets be honest, people dont care about endorsements, they are used to insult your tank for being being tanky enough, or dps not doing damage, or as a meme when your mercy does loads of damage or most elims or something dumb. Play of the games, endorsements, they are all things no one gives a shit about, never will and have never done. They are only used as evidence against someone whos being a dick and makes no difference at all. In fact it was hella annoying taking time out of my end screen timer and get back to the menu, so much so that you have to proactively leave the game in order to requeue, its more annoying than anything else.
The endgame cards are a big part of the reason I loved OW1. I’m not THAT great of a player but I could often contribute in ways that would put me on a card. Being on fire was an amazing visual confirmation to keep doing good. Player portraits told me how long someone has been playing and how good they were at a glance. Why were any of these removed? The benefits far outweigh the imagined downsides
I get people complained a lot about them, but the medals, endorsement system and endgame cards really were a huge part of why I enjoyed the game. It really sold a sense of community to the game for me. Like you, your team and the enemies could see and endorse a player's achievements in a game and really make them feel special. I remember how happy I was whenever I got 10 votes at the end of a match. Feeling like even the enemies appreciated how well I played. Now it just puts you to the battlepass and feels so much worse because of it
I really didn't like the medals because they had no real meaning and everyone was still so fixated on them (I'm not sure if the scoreboard is better though). Getting votes on your cards was nice though, it made having payload duty feel worth it. Removing endorsements from enemys feels weird too. On the other hand, i do like having faster queues after games (not having to leave the game after the potg to save myself 40s of waiting).
So here's the thing: No company will beef up their servers for a launch or expansion because they know a good chunk of people are sight seers who will go away in a week. Everyone learned from Wildstar that doing so is a recipe for going broke and being stuck with a bunch of servers you only needed for a month but are now stuck with and forced to deal with somehow. I suspect they know this, are aware their servers can't handle the huge influx of players and just plan all along to cry DDOS because Bobby needs that fat bonus.
The gameplay at large is very similar since it is the same game with some reworks, basically a major balance patch. I don't quite see how they "removed ow1".

One of my biggest issues with the first Overwatch (besides it's AWFUL matchmaking) was I barely felt a sense of progression or accomplishment when 80% of my progress was tied to hopefully getting a good skin from lootboxes. Their solution is removing borders, which basically made up the other 20% of progression, while throwing out lootboxes anyway so those rewards go out the window, ON TOP OF removing cards where you could at least see your better plays on a shitty team were noticed by SOMEONE, even if it was just the game measuring numbers. It's ABSURD
Yeah, as a Mercy main, I miss the cards at the end of the match. Healers are always under appreciated, so seeing my card get a ton of likes (from both teams) at the end of a match felt like vindication of a job well done. Now all I can hope for is an endorsement or two, which feel somewhat meaningless to be honest.
You can't even get endorsed by the enemy team anymore. You can see everyones stats all the time though, so it's not like the cards are needed. It's just like how you checked your own stats, only now it shows everyones, including the other teams, for... some reason.

$90 a month? Man, I wish I could pay $90 for a phone bill, after they're done adding all the hidden fees, surcharges, and absurd taxes to the bill. Still not as bad as a cable bill though, lol.
@Vaniq We're talking about anything that isn't prepaid tho, didn't Act Man say something about not being able to use prepaid numbers? Also Sprint doesn't exist anymore. We used to be Sprint customers and got automatically transitioned to a T-Mobile plan that was slightly more expensive Also #2, Sprint doesn't sell unlocked phones afaik(?) I just took the Sprint one cause it's better than Samsung's direct price. And it's a moot point anyway because most ""unlocked"" phones these days (including all Samsungs with a snapdragon chip) are actually bootloader locked. And iPhones always were, but at least they get jailbreaking as long as you stay on an old iOS.
They also removed maps from the competitive and quickplay into a pool system that changes every season. The only "benefit"/reason I see why they are doing this is because they want it to feel fresh from season to season without having to actually add content into the game.
Well I don't know how many maps would you want to have in Ranked map pool then? I think at the moment there is 18? 5-5-5-3 (Control-Hybrid-Escort-Push) and they are excluding 4 maps currently I think. If we are getting new map every 2nd season also it would be close to 25 maps soon, which is actually a lot, if you just want to play more King's Row. I think sweet spot is much more closer to 4 or 5 maps per game mode for each season (if we have 4 or someday 5 different game modes?) which makes it 20 maps in "map pool" instead of somewhat 30+ in few years. It's only affecting Unranked and Competitive Play with Map Pool and new Hero needing to be unlocked though. Doesn't stop anyone playing the map in custom game mode. Does it make game fresh with changing maps with season (day/night versions also) well to be fair I wouldn't even notice. Although how many different maps do you see in OTHER games? I wouldn't call it content by having different map pools per season, but have to admit eventually you would have to limit map pool for ranked at least (so why not for quick play too?). I could play King's Row all day, but then again how often am I even getting it, if there's 20 or 30 maps in pool? Not so often, or at least I shouldn't be getting it that often.
I really miss the cards at the end of the matches because as support it was always the way I felt rewarded for my part in the game, otherwise I'll never get a potg so people just forget you're there
Never really understood how removing medals, in their eyes, would "reduce toxicity". The fact that it's so heavily team reliant causes the toxicity because everyone's just constantly pointing fingers at one another as to why they lost. That's never going to change. Players should just ignore the ones being toxic or just disable the text chat like my mate did because he was getting fed up with being ripped into every match.
"oh no someone's being toxic!" Ok well...instead of removing a great deal of fun from the game what if...just what if. You mute the chat. Or turn down the volume. Or ignore them.
The thing I absolutely hated the most was them taking the OW1 skins that were included in the $60 in the first game by earning them for free, are now $10-$20. It's scummy af and it's the worst thing I've seen a company do. Taking premade FREE things and just making them $20. I guess I'll never get anymore skins that I missed.

This skin thing can be applied to pretty much most modern games, I recall during the past, many many centuries ago during the age of Black Ops: Cold War, the only way to not just look like the base operator with a recolor was to buy whatever new operator they had in the shop, pretty much 90% of the different skins for operators there were just recolors, with 20+ dollar outfits in the shop being the only thing that looked unique.
the 2 little things i miss more than i thought i would is 1: the endcards where you could see who perfomed the best at some categories (healing, damage *objective time* (where did that go?) and 2: the option to endorse the enemy team. i cant count how many times the enemy team had a really good player that just had bad luck with randoms from the internet, and i just want to give them that little "hey, you did great, here have some recognition". nope, thats gone. dunno how that combats toxicity, but my brain probably isnt corporate enough to see the brilliance behind that.
those are gone because everyone gets participation awards, in current political correctness equallity means equility of outcome, so there cant be best.
they even said them self that there isn't a scoreboard in Overwatch (1) because it incentivises toxicity to specific team members (which it does!) so in no way i can imagine how/why they suddenly think it's a good idea to add a scoreboard. and yes you're talking basically from my heart with the endcards. it was always so cool to see someones performance valued that isn't just "x Kills" or "x Damage" but also "killed x people with his/her ult, used the ult y times" or for zarya "x% average energy". these cards didn't just genericly list some basic statistics but actually how good you where with that hero. sure there where also cards just about how many kills but these ususally came up when the kill count was actually parting from the other players kill-stats.
They are based in California. Gotta get rid of ANYTHING that might offend all the crazy leftist lunatics, they have pretty much taken over Cali at this point. Hence why it has turned into a woke shithole.
It's wild to see how crazy anti-toxicity measures are getting: limiting audio chat, recording and transcribing player audio, asking for the player's personal data. I understand some players might become annoying and insulting when they lose matches. But this is breaching personal privacy. Is this even legally allowed? Hope other game companies don't follow through.
Extorting personal data is probably for ad selling purposes as usual. As for everything else, they want to pretend they ""fight toxicity""" while doing nothing to actually weed out the toxic scum they've been spoiling for two decades by rewarding smurfing and toxic tactics, because they would lose a bit of money from the toxic scum in the process.
This whole "muh privacy" bitching is kinda cringe. What is it your everyday mouth breather have that is so valuable nobody can find out about it? Nobody gives a fuck about what you're doing unless you're investigated for an actual crime you committed.
Well better question would be why can't people behave? Why do they have to act like morons while playing video games? What personal privacy, you already accepted the terms, when you installed and started the game? If someone can't behave online games there should be consequences simple as that (which is usually just short ban or permaban). Why should game companies let some people let ruin the fun for the most people? It only takes one idiot to ruin the fun for the rest so what do you expect will happen.
They changed director midway through so it's very likely that Jeff either left because of the sexual harassment or because of the fact the higher ups were pushing for a game completely different from his vision.
That or all of the devs that actually knew how to make the game run either left or got fired during the harassment claims and allegations. They might've been shit human but at least they were competent at making the game work. The members of OW2's dev team still can't fix bugs from the games launch almost 2 weeks later on a live service game. Absolute clowns. The worst part is that OW2 isn't even a big change from OW1 -- it's really more like Overwatch 1 just with a new UI and that's about it. Same Engine, same models, same graphics. How can those clowns work on a "sequel" for 3 years and the stuff that was supposed to make it a sequel (the campaign / story mode, though no one really gives two fucks about that) isn't it released along with the game, lmao.
I mean the man set out to do one game that got canned halfway, told to use whatever assets he had from it, with a skeleton crew at that, as ppl got shifted to other projects, and make something out of it, managed to pull a rabbit out of that hat and OW1 hit top marks, gets on to OW2 and most likely than not couldn't enforce the philosophy the game had had till then and just calls it quits , and voila OW 1.1 now show me the money.. just sad to see yet another title follow a trend that should have been rooted out years ago -_-
Best way I've seen this game described (by my friend): "Overwatch 2 does amazing step forward, but then does backflip, falls back 2 steps while asking for your money to pay hospital bills even though it has money to do so on it's own"
The loot boxes were never that bad, you used to get them so often. I have around 100 hours in Overwatch and I have hella gold skins (whether it was pure luck or not) but now you have to grind for 9 months STRAIGHT to get ONE gold. When I saw people rejoicing the announcement that loot boxes were going away I already knew it was gonna be bad. Also to comment on the current gaming landscape: $60 is too much to us and too little them, whether that be due to inflation or general economical degradation or just straight up greed on their part.
It's greed. Games are far cheaper to make than they used to be (industry wages are rock-bottom and unpaid crunch the norm, there's entire libraries of plug-in tools and baked-in systems rather than having to build an engine from scratch, the shift to digital has removed the cut of profits that retail stores used to take and the cost of making physical copies, etc), and trying to rinse players for up to 12 grand for an asset flip of a game that already more than paid for itself is ridiculous.
You forget to mention the potted plant they added in the attack spawn on Gibraltar. That's some game-changing stuff right there, definitely a legit sequel
Well, you were right about most things. Main problem I’m seeing is the merging, I tried to merge a PC account to my 3 year old Xbox account and it removed all of my skins and basically deleted the account. Tried contacting Blizzard support, they deleted my first support ticket, 2nd ticket they hit me with an automated response. They couldn’t care less about the money and time I put into that account.
I thought the same thing, but it turned out my account just hadn’t finished merging yet. I hadn’t noticed the option at the bottom of the main menu where it shows you the progress of the merge.
This just further confirms what I've suspected for years now. Uninstalling the Battle net launcher along with all related content had been the best decision I've ever made. The struggle with sunken cost fallacy was real but I'm glad to say that I'd rather sink my costs into literally anything but Activision Blizzard.
I literally remember watching the first gameplay footage on this as it released and I literally was thinking to myself "Dang Overwatch has been getting players for years" I wonder when they gonna make a second one 🤦♂️
Indoctrination basically. When you force feed people enough $20 skins it becomes the market norm. Its at a point where the consumers literally try to defend it, thats how hopelessly fucked we actually are in this market. People will *Actively ask to pay more money for less content at a lower quality*
I've seen people who had the skin from the end of the Overwatch season pass on day 1. Which means they spent at least~150$ day one :| As long as 1 person like that exists for 50-100 other players, these terrible monetization systems will continue to be common place. I don't understand how people can pay enough money for multiple full priced games on a digital costume for one game.
@@TheDom998 The thing is though, you didn’t earn that skin from completing a difficult challenge like most older games, you got it from spending an exorbitant amount of money, if anything it has the opposite effect of admiration.
@@TheDom998 funnily enough, at least from my perspective, anyone I see with a cool skin that's not from the season pass looks like an fool for spending 20 USD on it.
Love that at 8:07 you used an old school revolver for that bit bc its also how Hunt Showdown is handling their unlockables now, and that revolver is exactly the type of gun used in Hunt. Pay real money or go through challenge based questlines to unlock them. Its not as agregious as Blizzard or Activision yet but you can see who they are influenced by. Money talks.
Small correction: Overwatch 2 was not lazy, they put at least as much as they did into overwatch, Just they put 90% of that effort into "How can we extract as much money as possible" and only about 10% of time into "Can we make the game playable/worth playing?"
id say 97% of that went to extracting money. hence they just combined them. shit they didnt even have the main diffrence for the games up and ready at launch. i bet itd be a year before pve mode comes out. its a cash grab
Valorant and CSGO are miles more greedy, so no, OW is not trying to extract as much money out of. Fucking hate this idea that it’s greedy when basically every other game but fortnite is worse
Fun fact bastion’s super was broken because of a glitch after the server issues were fixed, he’s still not available in character selection as of writing this…

@@buto1542 Companies know you know care, that's literally why they're doing it. Genshin Impact is literally a casino game yet it's insanely big. Why? Surprise surprise, because it's fun so people don't care. One day they'll make it that to play a game where you need to pay 10$ every day or else they'll lock your account, but if it's fun, people won't care. And we'll have more and more generations born in this new era of the gaming industry where they don't know any better so they'll accept it and defend it. The gaming industry has long become another corporate landscape for money and apathy is the reason it got there, more than addiction.
Newest addition is bastion being removed from the game for his ult becoming spammable. Also dunno if you care about nit picks but they did add cover / terrain to maps in certain spots that originally didn't have them, removing a lot of open spaces from old maps making them easier to hold instead of just dead zones.

I love how this game gave the new character Kiriko an entire short film to advertise her, but then wants the player to grind to Level 55 to even play as her. It's like Blizzard wants you to despise them for doing stuff like this.
As someone who just started Overwatch 1 just before 2's release, I was pleasantly surprised that the grinding for loot boxes rewarded you with in game currency that felt like it would get me skins within a semi-reasonable amount of time. I also appreciated that the medal system shows how well you did even when you were on the losing team. Needless to say, Overwatch 2 only has the 5 v 5 thing going for it now. Big yikes.
Yeah, and the stuff you like about 5v5 could've been accomplished within the 6v6 format. They didn't need to nuke the entire soul of the game to remove some CC or stop Double Shield.
As someone who played a lot of Overwatch one for a long time, and even tended to buy lootboxes during seasonal events for the cool skins, I'm fucking appalled at what Overwatch 2 did to the progression/monetization Fuck battlepasses, I liked the damn lootboxes in Overwatch. At least you got them for free for playing the game
I agree with the loot boxes thing but the removal of medals and implementation of a scoreboard is so much better. I can now tell what exactly my teammates are doing and why the one healer has somehow less healing than soldier and roadhog( it’s always kiriko)
Something you missed about the new voice lines is the Apex style pings and callouts. Being able to just ping where somebody is flanking is very useful when playing with no-mic randos and they seem to have added callouts. The only one I have heard so far tho is the one about being outnumbered. Very useful to be getting an audio cue along with the visual one.
@@Anonymys43 if you don't have it bound already, head to options, scroll down to communication controls, and there should be an option to bind one of your buttons to pinging.
My friends would always play Overwatch 1, but I was hesitant to pay so much for what was essentially Paladins. When I heard the sequel was free, I got excited and downloaded it on day 1. After waiting several days for the servers to figure themselves out, I realized that I didn't even enjoy the game. Totally worth it.

ye at this point, it feels to me more like a game that made by some no name company trying to copy overwatch, and this is the result. Some lame game mode [push] inferior UI and money grab, and even lamer reworks. Of course if it would be like that, who knows, maybe they would make more fun heroes copied from the originals. Truly incredible how they managed to make a step back in like every direction.. it actually is incredible. They had a working system...unbelievable
As someone who plays a lotta comp there's one thing I wanted to add that I feel like you missed (fantastic video btw I agree with everything you're saying!), the ranking system and matching is kind of a clusterfuck right now? They've removed SR and replaced it with what it is now (kinda like a tier thing ig?), which is a nice change of pace cause now I don't feel like I'm dancing around the same numbers for the rest of eternity. But now instead of losing or gaining SR each match you win/lose, you rank up or down for every 7 wins or 20 loses that you have (whichever comes first). Which makes the balancing feel very weird at times cause I can't help but feel that I either just curb stomped a bunch of bronze players or just got steam rolled by a bunch of top 500s. This was an issue in Overwatch 1at times but I've noticed it a lot more with this game than the original, and I know there are other comp players who feel the same. I dunno maybe with time it'll better? more of the same? I'm not particularly sure but I do think its something worth mentioning
Took me ages to get out of bronze but since I've been in silver the games feel 'easier' or at least more fun. No one's getting steamrolled but wins are more regular since moving ranks. I doubt I simply got better over a day or something, but at least in my experience bronze was more often than not one team absolutely rinsing the other
Matchmaking will probably be screwed for a while because there are so many people coming back to try overwatch 2 that haven't played for years (and therefore don't have a rank yet) but were/are really good. Meanwhile there is also a flood of new players as well.
@@bldontmatter5319 but it’s also not the actual release. That comes when the campaign shows up. What they did instead was effectively a mega patch on their multiplayer to keep that hype going until they can finish up the campaign. This isn’t the entirety of overwatch 2 and it wasn’t supposed to be either, but blizzard is terrible at marketing so it was misconstrued as such by basically everyone.
One minor correction I would like to add here is that specifically the phone number thing was not soo much a fight against toxic behavior but more an attempt to fight cheaters. As we all know cheating is becoming an increasingly larger issue in games and even more so in F2P shooters. I'm not necessary saying the way they did it was correct or executed well.
@@GeneralZimmer Ironically I'd have to buy an account to play now since they don't take my cellular carrier. Not that I'd want to play this trash anyway. I quit the original OW during s2 and never looked back.
A similar effect happened with New Coke in the 80s. They tried to replace the thing everyone liked with no option of reverting back and people were so furious they made them undo the change. Wonder what will happen here.
You saw the EmpLemon video too didn't ya'? That said, I agree with your judgement: most likely they're going the route of "We're doubling / triplicating the rate of coins you get, so it's not as bad :)" despite still being 2.5 months for a legendary skin.
Some years back when lootboxes were being questioned over legality, I remember some developer saying something along the lines of "the alternative is a lot worse. You are going to wish you didnt do this"
I've always viewed Battle Passes as predatory monetization meant to fleece players into continuously spending money. Overwatch 2 just confirms my biases even further, given how predatory the game's Battle Pass system appears to be.
@@geodude03 what they were doing before. The only problem with that is that they weren't making literally all the money in the world so obviously it wasn't good enough. /S
Yeah. They can be done right though. There are battle passes where you can earn enough currency at the end of the season to get the next battle pass for free. Pretty sure Fortnite does that.
They added like 12+ voice lines specifically using McCree's new name to shove it down everyone's throats. He had like ONE voice line before saying "The name's McCree" and now he, and other characters that should have no knowledge of his name change, all call him by the new one.
All they needed to do was have him be like "Aight changing my name cause I'm wanted." and that's it. But nah, just forced on us to cover their tracks thinking a name change will do anything.
It makes me happy to say my friends and I have been having a blast with this game. But I would not dream of giving Activision Blizzard any of my funds.

Eh, there's other games I would rather install on my pc than OW2. The current state of the game rn, is just poorly done. And basically just taking (stealing) the space needed for worthwhile games.
idk why ppl are saying it’s the same game bro. removing one tank literally changes everything. what else did u want them to do, make the game battle royale? lmao
I'm glad you pointed out the progression in OW2. At first, I couldn't really figure out why the game felt so dull. After seeing this video, it dawned on me that there really isn't any incentive to play this game continuously besides ranked to get the gold guns. Tbh it's saddening. Anyways great video!
@@DemiCape Motivation is whatever you want it to be, if leveling up is your drug of choice then a battlepass number should also be, clearly its not so maybe you have to rethink some things. Playing this game is itself enough of a rewarding experience and like every other game, "progression" is nothing more than levels after a while.
@@scotttimbrell8632 except in the first game every level up gave you a loot box. every single time. Which is free. The battlepass has locked content for pay only. so your argument already failed its point. don't tell people how to think. you like the battle pass. they dont. its that simple.
@@Rosietea No you miss-understood my point. We were talking about levels, the number that goes up. Not the reward for leveling, and if you want to be accurate once you get high enough levels you don't receive loot boxes EVERY level. Either way, you can think that getting a loot box is progression, I would argue that getting a bunch of random cosmetics everytime a number hits a certain amount isn't that different from getting number when a number hits a certain amount. What you fail to understand is that players like to see number go up, always have done and is the main point for a lot of games, META leveling is what players crave, not rewards for leveling, that's just a bonus. So leveling the battlepass, despite not earning for it is fine for progression. Think call of duty, people liked to prestige because new number goes up, some people didn't and that's fine. But now it's a seasonal thing and some people like to rank up again and some people don't, either way you get no rewards for doing so. And Im not telling people WHAT to think, I'm telling people what people think, because unfortunately for you, people display behaviours that are predictable and samey, hence how game development is a formula in order to get players to play their games. Think of FOMO, or other exploits that force people into thinking a certain way, I'm not telling people it's okay to feel like they are missing out, but that's exactly what they do feel.
@@DemiCape I agree. I really did like the progression levels in OW1, it was a lot of fun seeing my levels go up, get XP, and show off a bit and strive for the next level. It was another element that I miss and was really disappointed that it was not in OW2. I guess competitive ranks will be my new "level" for now, but it's not like its different from OW1...so idk how fun thats going to be.
It’s so bizarre hearing the tonal shift from the development of OW to OW2. I bought into the hype of Overwatch back in 2014-15. At that time, one of my favorite UA-cam creators, Star_, had been transitioning away from TF2 as his primary focus. Having played TF2 for years, it was exciting to see a good polished competitor coming out by Blizzard. And it was a good comparison, because most of my friends and I had spent a huge amount of time in TF2. There was the small things, like an appreciation for the net code, where platforms didn’t glitch out on you, and the payload was more dynamic. That the devs were making map and hero adjustments in the betas and post-launch like removing bastion’s shield and moving assets around to block sight lines. Then there was the promise of lore. If I remember correctly, the FPS game that we got in OW was a portion of a larger shelved IP that Blizzard had already sunk a huge amount of resources into expanding. And it looked promising, with the gorgeous shorts to compare against a game that Valve seemed to be leaving to die. Now, I’m not sure anyone that worked on OW then is left. After so many scandals and bad actors, it looks like this was a game created by algorithm, with no dev input past the visuals. For many years now, Overwatch has felt like a game that is played by streamers exclusively. They are the ones that make noise when things happen now regarding game balance, essentially acting as the community managers whenever things happen. And the idea that Blizzard seems to be up-charging them to promote this game seems scummy as hell.
An additional point, the phrasing of the PvE content being released as “seasonal content” is worrying, because that suggests that there’s going to be additional paywalls for accessing all of it, and that it’s still not going be finished at that point.
"...but I strongly suggest that you don't buy anything from this game until Blizzard stops being a money-first company and starts being a player-first company." This. Definitely this. If a company puts you first, then they've earned your money. If you reward an unhealthy business practice, it'll only get worse. Still, great video as always, Mr. Acting Male. Your insight remains on point.

Never heard of a video game sequel that actively removed content until now. Truly one of the sequels of all time.
Warcraft III ‘Reforged’ did as well, also a Blizzard game.
Have you never played cod? They remove features all the fuckin time.

Maybe get more heroes in your workspace first, the message would feel slightly more genuine, Bobby.

really glad you touched on the lootboxes before. while lootboxes generally suck in overwatch they used to actually be not that big of a deal because you could really grind a lot of them and unlocking many things without paying anything. this new shop is for sure worse than what it used to be
It’s mainly since like you said they weren’t too hard to grind and were cosmetic only.
@@spunch1205 Still doesn’t beat the relatively really old times when skins were for things like achievement rewards and skill based tasks rather than monetized…

I’m not positive if the 360 and PS3 era were mostly or totally like that, but it was probably better than now.
It makes me really happy that games like Elden Ring, which is one of the very few non indie games to return to that style, sold so well. It gives me hope that we may someday return to that style of game. Sure some games be $70 due to inflation, but that’s totally reasonable imo for a complete well made game, especially with how much money goes into graphics now
(Separate argument, but I think we’d have much better games if we took that money going towards graphics, made games look more cartoony (or lower poly) or pixelated and spent that time making amazing levels and mechanics rather than filling games with meaningless bloat and or grind.

I get people complained a lot about them, but the medals, endorsement system and endgame cards really were a huge part of why I enjoyed the game. They'll be adding content every season tho?
@sk1nz28 yes, if they dont it would be suicide
the map pool already existed in overwatch 1. its nothing new
Well I don't know how many maps would you want to have in Ranked map pool then?
I mean, you get the scoreboard now so everyone kind of knows. But I do miss getting the likes to 5 or 10 and hearing the voicelines.

They changed director midway through so it's very likely that Jeff either left because of the sexual harassment or because of the fact the higher ups were pushing for a game completely different from his vision.
Agreed, and they clearly won. This isnt the OW2 I saw at Blizzcon. I miss daddy Jeff 😢
I mean the man set out to do one game that got canned halfway, told to use whatever assets he had from it, with a skeleton crew at that, as ppl got shifted to other projects, and make something out of it, managed to pull a rabbit out of that hat and OW1 hit top marks, gets on to OW2 and most likely than not couldn't enforce the philosophy the game had had till then and just calls it quits , and voila OW 1.1 now show me the money.. just sad to see yet another title follow a trend that should have been rooted out years ago -_-
Best way I've seen this game described (by my friend):
"Overwatch 2 does amazing step forward, but then does backflip, falls back 2 steps while asking for your money to pay hospital bills even though it has money to do so on it's own"
The loot boxes were never that bad, you used to get them so often.
At this point just make overwatch one free
Also who thought it was a good idea to give a game a high price tag and still have Micro-transactions in it
only time when they were bad were seasonial events, because you couldnt stack up beforehand on boxes, so you ahd a very limited time to get the skins.
I thought this game was free to play?
I found it weird that they removed the "on fire" mechanic, but the heroes still say "I'm on fire!"

I lost all my skin, but I was on pc
I thought the same thing, but it turned out my account just hadn’t finished merging yet. I hadn’t noticed the option at the bottom of the main menu where it shows you the progress of the merge.

@@DemiCape Motivation is whatever you want it to be, if leveling up is your drug of choice then a battlepass number should also be, clearly its not so maybe you have to rethink some things.
