@@Arcticnick I think it's way better than over-touristed Chiang Mai. It's like an 8 baht train ride to get there too. I would recommend the weekend market. I just hope it stays nice and doesn't become too well-known in the future.
first time i went to lamphun was a few years ago i got on the train from bangkok and woke up getting off in lamphun what i felt was that it was really a historical thailand town for thai people. there's virtually no english langauge anywhere, everything written in central thai or northern thai everything is the orignal shophouse and market oriented. and temples as centers of town. the way thailand was without foreigners and foreign influence. nice little town but i dont think i can last there long term.
It's somewhere I'll definitely visit, but for living, I'd prefer Chiang Mai because there's just more going on. I like the convenience of the city, and there are still big old areas to explore there.
I have been to Lamphun for a few times. Accommodation in Lamphun is incredibly cheap compared to Chiang Mai. Yet, it's closer to Chiang Mai city than some of Chiang Mai's own districts. Just half an hour's ride to Chiang Mai city. Great option for anyone hoping to settle in Northern Thailand on a tight budget and experience real Thai culture with minimum Western effect. For anyone already living in Chiang Mai, I recommend experiencing Loy Krathong festival in Lamphun if you already experienced it in Chiang Mai. After Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong might be celebrated best in Lamphun. Now would I live in Lamphun? If I was married and over 50, I could. Now that I'm single and 35, I wouldn't. Actually, the only Northern Thai city other than Chiang Mai, which I could currently imagine living in, is Chiang Rai. Hope you make more videos from the neighboring cities. I miss them. Cheers.
Jon love your videos and you come across as a very natural, likable and sincere guy. But the horrible air pollution is so dangerous and it seems to be extending into many more months than previous years. Lung cancer is the number 1 cancer in Thailand and Northern Thailand has the highest rates overall. It’s easy to connect the dots and see the very real danger to one’s health choosing to live in CM. I love the North and have travelled extensively on motorcycles there for many, many years, but I refuse to go back any more. Its easy to ignore when your young, but you put yourself at great risk. Lung cancer is a silent killer and it’s often not diagnosed until it’s too late. Sorry to be a downer, but that is the reality and people need to be aware of it.
I was there in the March pollution - my voice literally changed for the few days I was there - when I went back to Chon Buri my voice instantly returned to normal!
Yeah it's not ideal at all, air purifiers in the home and only go out when you need does mitigate it though. The pollution in Bangkok is also bad for more of the year. It's a very difficult one!
Interesting city. How about a few videos on places to live there?
Yeah I'll see if I can find any places to show, but more difficult to find them there :)
Oh no! Keep it secret, keep it safe...
I was just about to thank Jon for the tip, as I live just down the road but haven't ever been to Lamphun, either. Now, I must. Sorry!

@@StephanosBlack Nice one, Stephanos. It looks very nice and tranquil. Thanks.
If you want something bigger, then go a Lampang, you will have the shopping malls…
@@AlloMission I shall now consider that too. it's a bit futher than Lamphun but all easily accessible, especially from Chiang Mai.

How about Burma communities at Chiang Mai ?
Nice idea :)

Yep I'd agree with that!

Thanks mate, yeah I'm the same as you, looks like a good retirement destination with family, but maybe not when you still working :)
Do you know much about Hua Hin John?
I've only ever been once tbh, I really liked it there
Lamphun is great, deffo quieter. Though Rodeo Pub gets rowdy at the weekend.
😂

A house on a few Rai on the edge of town would do me there.
Yep 100%!
It's just a bit too quiet there, nice though and lovely people.
Yeah, I think as a retirement spot it could be great!
