You my friend are giving a wonderfull service to the 'people!' (like Rik from the young ones would say) those of us who are about to jump off the ledge, leave the safety of a commonwealth country, to become an expat in Thailand. Wonderfull stuff.
Hello Wayne ! Thank you for your video :) I have a question, I'm sure you answer it in the video but as I don't understand English I'll ask it here. Do you know when the fire season will end in 2024 in Chiang Mai? Thanks for your time
Thank u for this very informative. I’ve been doing research because my lungs are sensitive and the short term and long term effects are not good for health. How far south do people go? Is it bad in Bangkok?
Good on you Wayne. All you can do is offer your opinion. It's then up to each to decide what works and what doesn't. It certainly feels like it's become more of an issue. I feel bad for all the locals as maybe it's my imagination, but Chiang Mai doesn't seem to have recovered post covid, tourist wise? Burning season also certainly doesn't help matters. That said, the most important thing we can have is our health, and this is what I wish for all the local Mai's. Be well, be safe. Thank you for your contributions during the year. I wish you health and happiness in the '24. 🙏😀
Cheers Mate! Chiang Mai has nearly all but recovered mate, it's not far off. Burning isn'y ideal, we just have to deal with it, because we love this city. Even with burning, we love living here. Sounds crazy, but that's the Chiang Mai magic. Thanks buddy.

Hi Wayne, we are in Thailand at the min and are due to arrive 6th Feb In Chang Mai for 5 days. Do you think it will be ok? Would really appreciate your advice as we may need to reconsider. Also, how will this affect Pai and Chang Rai? Thank you
@@WalkAboutWayne cheers for the reply! Will be going to Pai for a few days after Chang Mai and then to Chang Rai after that for a few more days, so I'm hoping I miss the worst of it. Then onto travel Vietnam from the 19th Feb!
I wanted to just say thank you for this video. I was so ready to come in first week of April '24. I was hoping it would not be that bad. I mean i been in Cali smog. But it seem this is a different beast. I see the app says it 76 right now. I just dont know if it started yet or just started. I just i just hoping it better so i still can come in April or just wait until Oct but i know it will be crowded more around that time. Please keep us posted if it different this year. ty again.
Nobody knows yet, we just have to wait and see. April might be ok, it depends on a lot of things. I will keep the channel updated if things start to get bad. Thanks 🙏
I’m going to Chiang mai in 5 days time (staying for four nights). How is it atm? Would you recommend going someplace else entirely and skip chiang mai?
Hey Wayne! Thanks for letting us know! I'am backpacking from mid february from Ho Chi min city (vietnam) in 2 to 3 weeks to the northern part of vietnam. Would you say that Laos, which was my plan to go to from the north of Vietnam, is also affected by the smokey season? What would your advise be for me moving forward from the Northern of Vietnam?
Hi buddy, firstly I would say Laos would be smokey too. I've never been, so I'm not in the know about Laos, but I know it will be smokey. Vietnam could get some bad days. I been to Da Nang, and it can get polluted sometimes. I would say, any where south is going to be better.
Excellent question! It's a topic that has concerned me quite a bit during my time here. Honestly, I don't use sunscreen as frequently as I should. While I do have it and apply it occasionally, I admit that it's not as consistent as it should be. My recommendation would always be to make a habit of using it regularly!

Thank you Wayne - we have Chiang Mai in feb this year - we are sensitive and dont want to be disappointed when spending money and valuable vacation time. Is Feb worse than the videa shown
I’m heading to Thailand mid March, I’m aiming to be in CM end of March, is that a bad time? I want to avoid burning season in Laos, Cm and northern Vietnam at all costs. What’s the best time to go? Pai, and Pa Par too
The end of March is not the greatest time, but nobody knows how bad it will be. The worst of it should be getting better by then , but you never can tell.
Hi Wayne, me & my friend will be there in Chiang Mai on May 18-25. We are Filipinos working here in UAE, so i think the heat wont bother us that much 😅 but for the smoke, we got tired of wearing masks during covid season. Does are travel date will be much better?
I lived in Hang Dong for 6 years... Waking up and not being able to see the mountain was a common occurrence in smokey season. We decided to leave as we had our kids to consider.. being holed up inside for months at home and school is no fun
Yes Chris, the mountain does disappear during Smokey season. I think if I had kids, I would move also, so totally understand that. It’s a shame right 😢.
@@WalkAboutWayne Yeah, We had 5 years in Chiang Mai and loved it. we considered moving down south and looked at schools in Krabi but ended up moving back to Bristol.. will look at splitting our time between UK and Thailand in a few years when the kids are old enough to look after themselves (~10 years)
Happy new year wayne. This will be my first smokey season in Chiang Mai. I wont be leaving as i have a daughter in primary school. Quick question Wayne. Do regular pharmacies stock N95 masks or are they best bought online?
Happy New Year buddy! The masks will be available in shops, but they tend to sell out when the burning gets bad. I always buy some online also. Be careful of fake ones on Lazada and Shopee. 👍
Well presented Wayne and the facts cannot be denied even though some (in these comments) try to for whatever reason. An article by the Guardian spells it out stating Chiang Mai at its peak the worst in the world for pollution as a result of the burn off. 🤩
Nice one, Wayne. A video on everyones fav subject this time of year. A complex issue that won't be solved anytime soon, especially with the situations in neighbouring countries. I might have to get you a hat or T shirt... or both with "It's always arsh burning season for me" for Crimbo next year 😉 Take it easy.
I have been in chiang mai 5 times now and i normally always come around end of october because at that time i think nature looks at its best and waterfalls are amazing that time of year and as a hobby photographer and hiker you don't want anything more... However the second time i stayed in CM it was January. I never heard of the burning season before and to be honest those 3 weeks i didn't notice anything about smoky air. I guess i was just lucky that year. Bit at the same time when I came back home I noticed how clean the air was. As you said one day it can be all bad and the next few days it's ok again. It's not a sience... i have been thinking about retiring in Chiang Mai but that smoky season is really having me two minds about it all... maybe in the next few years the government is going to tackle this problem. I hope they will because I don't want to live in a place where I am confined to stay in a room with an air purifier on bad days and hoping the next day it will be better...
Wow! that's incredible not noticing the burning 5 times!! My eyes are red raw, as soon as it starts. This city is magic, we all still live here, even with burning each year. I wouldn't rule it out buddy. If you can head south for a couple months a year. Thanks
@WalkAboutWayne 1 time I was there in January and the other 4 times it was at the end of October. More than a small fire in the distance when I was on 1 or another mountain I didn't see anything nor did I experience any air pollution. On the other hand... being in the cities like CM and Bangkok there is always this smell of fumes
@@jurgendekeyser288 Ah that's why Jurgen, you was here in January and October. The Burning hadn't even really started buddy. If it was like January and October all the time, it would be fine. Wait till March, whole different story.
thx ur so helpful and i always get good answers from you,i was considering going to a meditation retreat up around wat phradhatu sri chomtong voravihara,so you know that area -a couple hours away from chiang mai i think -have you heard about that place ?maybe not so smoky there

I am headed to Thailand in two weeks, bummed to see the video cause I wanted to ride the Doi Inthinaon (sorry if I misspelled). Still debating it, but ya I don't wanna be all smoked out eh.
I'll go to Samui mid March to mid April. That is the tax for living in Chiang Mai. The problem is the added cost and the fact you're never sure when peak smoke will hit. The threat is it keeps getting worse and longer. If you have to leave for 2 months a year is CM really viable? Thanks, man. Very on message for CM ex pats.
Yes Steve, it's hard to know when it's going to be worse every year. I'll take it day by day and probably head off when it gets really bad. It's not ideal, but that's what we have. I can live with a couple months a year. Cheers Mate, hope you have a good New Year.
We’re going for our honeymoon in 7 weeks time. Is it very bad in February? It’ll be towards the end we will be there. Travel agents won’t change our itinerary so we have to go now :(
Nobody knows what it will be like yet, but I would say at the end of Feb, things will be getting smokey. Don't worry, people live through it here every year (me included) I'm sure you'll have a great time in Chiang Mai.
i was there for 2023 it was really bad. When you can see the smoke in the air inches from the cars headlights at night you know that stuff is getting in your lungs. It will take time off your life.
we plan to be in Chiang Mai and Pai from March 11 to March 17 this year :( will we be too miserable to enjoy anything the whole time? If we wear masks? 😭
These dates don't look great, but nobody knows how bad it will be. I couldn't possibly say if you'll regret it. I would say it will be smokey, but how bad? We all will find out in the coming weeks.
My boyfriend and I are thinking of going to Chiang Mai in mid-May after a work event in Singapore. I read burning season can last until May. Do you think it might be better by then? I’m from CA so (unfortunately) used to smoke but might decide on sticking to the south if the smoke is bad enough to require wearing a mask.
I’ve been to Chiang Mai several times during burning season and my answer to…Should you come? NO!!! It’s so sad it’s beginning to start in the peak tourist season. It used to start at the end of February. If this continues, it will hurt the economy. Chiang Mai is the world’s largest foreign missions hub and I’m sure the expats living there will reconsider if this is the best place for raising a family.
@@WalkAboutWayne Yes it is magical. I’ve been there 30 times since 2005 but between November - January. Only a few times late February - early March. I’ve done a lot of work in the mountains with the Karen (car-wren) Hilltribe people; education, refuge camp and orphans. 2019 was my last time to Thailand. Mother is in final stages of Alzheimer’s but I will return in the future.

Yeah that works well providing they put the machine on the train so it arrives with you. Ask Paddy Doyle about that when he first started his adventure around 77 provinces. Dreamy (the name he gave it) got left behind 😂🤣😂@@WalkAboutWayne
Hi Wayne such a shame they do this they tarnish changmai. For a very number 1 location they fuck it up. Maybe it's best to live in hua hin South. Love the luna rentals you can get there, but if you cannot breathe for 3 months best to look elsewhere .keep up the good videos
Yes, it come over from Myanmar and other places too. A lot of the fires are coming from inside Thailand though. Not even just Northern either, all over Thailand
Yes mate, it's not pleasant. Some years are better than others but I agree, it's not great. Hope you're well Ellis buddy, I follow the channel a lot man. Hope the family are having a good time mate 👍
I wonder if "no till" farming could do away with that? In no till farming, you just keep a field perpetually covered with mulch, and that is the foundation of all massive scale organic farming. In organic farming, bugs are smothered with soap, instead of killed with toxic poisons. No till organic farming is the only truly sustainable farming technique, and requires less water, and can be done on the same massive scale as modern highly toxic Monsanto methods, which are archaic, and which produce products that are highly toxic to human health.
Nice! I hope they can do something like that. It's just changing the years and years of tradition, and getting everyone to change, that's the problem. Fingers crossed in the future.
This is total crap .I lived full time in Chiang mai up to 2019 for 10 years and never suffered as much as a cough out of it .Nor did my Thai family .The only consequence was that i could not see the mountains from my area of Sansai .Its organic burn off for FFS .Has gone on for 1000s of years .Then snow flakes from the West come and cry crocadile tears .If you dont like it ,then just FO please .
Oh, Anthony was here for 10 years and never got a cough. Ahhhh that's ok then, call the press, there's no problems. That is a shocking comment from someone who was here 10 years buddy. Embarrassing! Who you telling to FO? Sounds like you did 4 years ago. What a load of crap.
Is northern Thailand's air pollution becoming a tourism issue? High pollution levels in Thailand's northern city of Chiang Mai and surrounding provinces are keeping tourists away and alarming locals, with the government on Monday, April 10, urging residents to avoid outdoor activities.11 Apr 2023. This enquiry and the response says it all. Even the Thai Government are trying to protect both unsuspecting people and those already exposed to it of the issue.
@anthonydowling3356, your lack of education is astounding. I guess your personal experience trumps all the science that proves how dangerous breathing high volumes of PM10 and PM2.5 can be. It clearly also trumps all the figures for hospital admissions for lung and eye issues during the burning season and that's largely from locals and not "snowflakes from the west". Agricultural burning may've gone on for 1000s of years but not on the scale it does now and not in such close proximity to so many people. The addition of vehicle pollution and smoke from the burning of forest land to stimulate mushroom growth in more recent times has only compounded the problem. It's very real, it's significant and it has dangerous consequences and your narrow view on the subject won't change that one iota.
What are you doing Wayne😢. Your basically telling people to stay away. What about the people who run businesses. Not a good idea. Are you potty. I think you will lose a few friends
What about Mae Hon Song , is it similair ? Nan? Pechabun? Chiang Rai? I prefer the above over Chiang Mai ...But i dunno if these places also suffer from smoke as i only visted during my travels in the past ....Thanks for tips! Cheers!

Hi, do you know how the smog it is now in Chiangmai? And also then it will finish?
Thanks
thx Wayne,,happy days brother, keep on keepin on,,,i know u will😉
Thank you buddy 👍
I go there in beginning of april and now I listen about it for first time. Can anybody tell me if the burning season is over in beginning of april or if it is bad idea to go there?
Nobody really knows, but history tells us, smoke will still be around in April. We just have to wait and see how bad.
April is the worst month. May is bad, June it starts to get better. It drove me out permanently
Happy new year wayne wishing you a very happy new year.🎉🎉🎉
Happy New Year Julie! Thank you.
Appreciate the video mate - very real & informative - all the best 👍👋😃🙏
Cheers Ant.
Unfortunately with lack of research I booked a few days in Chiang Mai (feb 26-29) plane/ train ticket booked/hostel. Thoughts on just dealing with the $loss and changing my itinerary? Was really looking forward to experience Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai for a few days but not sure if I should just plan this for another time curious if you've left yet and if not an update
Thanks so much, super informative 😊
No worries, thanks 👍
I recommend you stay in Chiangmai untill on january and you can move to the beach on koh chang island or koh mak island on febuary to May and waiting celebate songran festival on April 2024. Happy 2024
Yes, that is probably the time frame fro most people who want to leave.
How is burning season affecting prices and cost of living (for farangs)? Are accomodations cheaper during burning season?
A lot more rooms will be available and you could find some better deals, yes 👍
It's called LOW season.😊
Thanks for your recommendations I plan to travel to Chiang Mai at the end of January my thai friend had already warned me about this pollution problem.
I hope you have a great time, Chiang Mai is a special city. Yes, just be prepared for the some pollution.
Thanks Wayne my best wishes for you and happy new year !
🎊🎉🎈🥰
You my friend are giving a wonderfull service to the 'people!' (like Rik from the young ones would say) those of us who are about to jump off the ledge, leave the safety of a commonwealth country, to become an expat in Thailand. Wonderfull stuff.
Thanks! What a great show 'The Young Ones' was.
Hello Wayne !
Thank you for your video :) I have a question, I'm sure you answer it in the video but as I don't understand English I'll ask it here. Do you know when the fire season will end in 2024 in Chiang Mai? Thanks for your time
Hi, thanks for liking the video. The end of burning is normally April or May.
Thank u for this very informative. I’ve been doing research because my lungs are sensitive and the short term and long term effects are not good for health. How far south do people go? Is it bad in Bangkok?
You would probably need to go below Bangkok to get away from it all but the further south of Chiang Mai you go, it should get better.
How good are the good days in the month of March and April? Do you have any days that are a green or a yellow on the AQI during March or April?
Looking at the chart for 2023, I can't see one yellow or green day for March and April. for PM2.5
Happy new year, brutha! 🎉
Happy New Year buddy 🥳
Thanks this video helped me, br great to see you do video on what sits like living in Thailand in the rainly season?? FYI I have been 12 time's I think but only in high season??
Thank you! I think I have some rainy season videos on my channel, from previous years.
@@WalkAboutWayne ok thanks Ill have. a look to find them! cheers
Hey Wayne! Im planning to come in May/June 2024? Would the burning season be over then?
Hi Kevin, The end of and going into June, it should be all but over mate. There might be some pollution around, but that's normal with Thailand.
@@WalkAboutWayne nice one, settled then, ill book for June to come! thanks.
Hi Wayne, we are in Thailand at the min and are due to arrive 6th Feb In Chang Mai for 5 days. Do you think it will be ok? Would really appreciate your advice as we may need to reconsider. Also, how will this affect Pai and Chang Rai? Thank you
Hi Eddy, I'm sure it will still be ok then mate, but I can't promise that. Pai and Chiang Rai won't be any different buddy. (maybe worse)
Thanks 🙏
Appreciate the guidance on the app. I’m 9 months from the move and the app is letting me compare my current location against CM daily.
Great! Yes, it's a good app for checking against other locations.
I’m going to Chiang mai in 5 days time (staying for four nights). How is it atm? Would you recommend going someplace else entirely and skip chiang mai?
It's fine here at the minute. Great weather 👍👍. No need to skip 😁
@@WalkAboutWayne thanks!
Hey I am going Chiangmai, pai , chiang early February only time I can . How bad will it be ?
Nobody knows how bad it will be in February. My opinion is, it will be starting to get worse as we move through Feb.
Hi Wayne. Quick question. Sun ceeam and Block. I know yiur there a long time. Do you use ?
Excellent question! It's a topic that has concerned me quite a bit during my time here. Honestly, I don't use sunscreen as frequently as I should. While I do have it and apply it occasionally, I admit that it's not as consistent as it should be. My recommendation would always be to make a habit of using it regularly!
@@WalkAboutWayne thank you Wayne il be out there in march going south to north and if get time to danang also. You are doing us proud over there . Veruit informative vlogs always. Ps. Quick question. Do you ever see streek artists thst do pottraits etc. I used to dee thrm back in 00s when there. I git back of a denim jacket done . I sadly lost it. But ID love to get one made again. I would appreciate an update mid february or any advise on where to go instead those first 2 weeks? Thankyou a lot!
I wouldn't worry just yet, things are ok here at the minute, but we're heading into the worst times in the next couple months. I will keep the channel updating. Thanks
@WalkAboutWayne myself and my husband are coming ro Chiang Mai for our 10year anniversary next week 😢 I'm really worried we have made a big mistake. Will be there 12th Feb to 17th Feb. Are we not going to be able to do anything 😢😢😢 should we change our plans.??? Would appreciate any advise pls 🙏🏾
@@chineloswork It's still moderate here at the minute, it's hazy and starting to get worse, but it's nothing really bad yet. Nobody knows what each day will be. All I can say is, it's still not to bad here , as of today, The 8th Feb.
Thank you Wayne - we have Chiang Mai in feb this year - we are sensitive and dont want to be disappointed when spending money and valuable vacation time. Is Feb worse than the videa shown
It's been really good up until today. Today it's been over 100. We will just have to see what the following days will be like. Thanks.
Hi I will be there next week for the weekend, how does it looks like right now? Thanks
It's good now, clear skies 👍
thanks@@WalkAboutWayne
What do you think from 10 to 15 January ?
Should be fine but it has started in Jan before.
Hey Wayne
Enjoying the channel
Da Nẵng would be a great option to escape burning season
Happy New Year mate
Thanks Peter! Yes, Da Nang is good, although some days can be bad in Da Nang also. Happy New Year buddy.
Darn, I’m going Chiang Mai, Chiang rai march 25-29. I hope it’s not too bad 😢. I didn’t know about this when I booked it
I'm sure you'll have a great time. People live through the burning here every year. 👍
The Air quality in bangkok is worse now, compared to Mai. How is it now? I arrive in 5 th March and was thinking to go to Mai 10 th march
It's in the orange most days, still not really bad, but unhealthy.
Is it okay if just in bangkok? Or khao yai?
It will be polluted in BKK
Is it really bad? Im fine with hot weather since i live in bali, but i heard will be smog everywhere?
@@WalkAboutWayne Thanks mate. I just ordered legit ones on Amazon.
Well presented Wayne and the facts cannot be denied even though some (in these comments) try to for whatever reason. An article by the Guardian spells it out stating Chiang Mai at its peak the worst in the world for pollution as a result of the burn off. 🤩
Thanks Steven mate. Yeah, theirs always one 🤣. Chiang Mai is definitely up amongst the worst, that's for sure. Have a good New Year mate.
Nice one, Wayne.
A video on everyones fav subject this time of year. A complex issue that won't be solved anytime soon, especially with the situations in neighbouring countries.
I might have to get you a hat or T shirt... or both with "It's always arsh burning season for me" for Crimbo next year 😉
Take it easy.
🤣🤣🤣 Nice one mate.

Not the greatest time, but nobody knows what it will be like.
I am headed to Thailand in two weeks, bummed to see the video cause I wanted to ride the Doi Inthinaon (sorry if I misspelled). Still debating it, but ya I don't wanna be all smoked out eh.
It's still moderate at the minute. It has started to get worse but it's still tolerable (for now)
I am probably gonna risk it but only go up for maybe 4 days and try to ride it then bail out down south@@WalkAboutWayne
My air purifiers are cleaned and ready to go. Last year sucked.
Yes pate, I hope it's not that bad again mate. 🤞
Don't worry, people live through it here every year (me included) I'm sure you'll have a great time in Chiang Mai.
i live in Chiang Rai 6 years and it gets bad here also, next year i will move to find cleaner air
Yes, I stayed in Chiang Rai for a while also. It was really bad. Hope you find some clean air this year. Thanks
How is DaNang Vietnam during smokey season? Phuket gets packed.
Da Nang can be hit and miss with pollution too. It should be better than Thailand though. Yes, Phuket won't be for me.
i was there for 2023 it was really bad. When you can see the smoke in the air inches from the cars headlights at night you know that stuff is getting in your lungs. It will take time off your life.
Yes, 2023 was really bad. I hope it's not so bad this year.
Damn I was hoping to visit chiang mai in Feb
You still could, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it.

We’re will you go for burning season this year?
I'm still not decided yet Beverly. I have a few places in mind.
I am leaving in January and not coming back until May
Yes, I think that's the time frame for many.
we plan to be in Chiang Mai and Pai from March 11 to March 17 this year :( will we be too miserable to enjoy anything the whole time? If we wear masks? 😭
These dates don't look great, but nobody knows how bad it will be. I couldn't possibly say if you'll regret it. I would say it will be smokey, but how bad? We all will find out in the coming weeks.
My boyfriend and I are thinking of going to Chiang Mai in mid-May after a work event in Singapore. I read burning season can last until May. Do you think it might be better by then? I’m from CA so (unfortunately) used to smoke but might decide on sticking to the south if the smoke is bad enough to require wearing a mask.
Hi, I would say the smoke will be gone by May, or on the verge of being gone. Towards the end of May it will be ok. 👍
Winter has been extremely weak this year and already getting smokey. It's going to be bad and nothing will be done about it. Plan accordingly.
Yes, something tells me it's going to be another bad one. Hope I'm wrong.
Some years are better than others . Chiang Mai is a magical place, that's why alot of people still stay.
Personally speaking, the burning season never really bothered me, but hey, it's a decent enough reason to take a little break elsewhere 👍
That's great it don't bother you, it hasn't me for many years, until last year. It's probably;y later on in life you'll feel it. Happy New Year.
In previous years whats its been like in the month of May?? Thanks for sharing your blog as this subject has been playing on my mind a fair bit!! Ive always wanted to visit Thailand and especially Chiang Mai and this will probably be the only opportunity ill ever get,so am reluctant to book unless i can visit Chiang Mai.
It's normally finished or coming to a finish by May. I wouldn't worry too much about mid to late May .

I didnt know about burning till i was there.
Yes, a lot of people don't realise until they get here.
Im surprised its not talked about more
@arviejustiniano2359 Really? It's all anyone in Thailand ever talks about. Just look at the Chiang Mai Facebook groups.
Is Lucille ready for a trip to Koh Chang for the burning season? K Chang is an awesome Island. But not lots of nightlife or hotties. Bring your own.
I have thought about riding Lucille south, or putting her on the train. I haven't ruled it out.
Yes, it's a shame Craig, hopefully one day they'll sort it. Chiang Mai is magic, even with the burning. This is my base buddy, my Thai home.
@WalkAboutWayne it isn't only Northern Thailand that's creating this problem, neighbouring countries are adding to this!!
Yes, it come over from Myanmar and other places too. A lot of the fires are coming from inside Thailand though. Not even just Northern either, all over Thailand

Fingers crossed in the future.
it s the big point that i choose HH , smoke in CM who even go to BGK

You'll find local people protest at the Government Offices, so nothing to do with foreigners complaining.
What are you doing Wayne😢. Your basically telling people to stay away. What about the people who run businesses. Not a good idea. Are you potty. I think you will lose a few friends
