Another reason for not smiling in photographs in the Victorian era was that often families would memorialize dead family members by taking their picture. With or without the family. And the dead were made up to look as if they were alive, even to drawing eyes on their eyelids. Several of the photos used here actually have dead people in them. Try to figure out which people are dead.

The most clear person in the photo is the dead person, because they do no move.

That is a myth. It is very obvious when a dead person is photographed even back then. These people are laying down and look dead. People who have their eyes open even if they look to be in a stand are very much alive.

The main reason for no smiling in old photos and most paintings even today are due to the exposure length/time it takes to hold still for a photo to be taken. People can't stand there an smile for that long.

Beethoven’s hair also indicated that he had many times the normal level of lead in his system and no narcotics, so he was not taking anything for pain, because he didn’t want his faculties to be dulled for his composing. There’s a really excellent book out called Beethoven’s Hair about a lock of his hair that was scientifically analyzed.

In 1939, my parents moved to London, UK from the European Continent, as
WWII approached. After I was born then living there, in 1944, after the
War ended, RAF pilot Douglas Bader
was a neighbor, whom my Mother
told me you could hear his metal
legs when he walked, and when
we met him, he would say hello to

They thought they were screwed. Then he climbed into a plane and did aerobatics for a while. He did stunts he had invented. Then he landed, got out and went to his office. He got the planes ready to go, and he went on the missions with his men. They took down the most Germans in The Battle Of The Bulge.

Photograph smiles: Early photography required really LONG exposure times, sometimes several minutes, during which the subjects had to remain absolutely still. A smile was a bit more likely to be moved during that time! The place of Caesar's assassination Is easily found in Rome; the yellow crime scene tape is still up. That stuff lasts a long, long time! When you said cannibalism it reminded me of a true crime story where this couple ended someone and didn’t know how to dispose of it, dismantled it and threw a big neighborhood barbecue. People kept saying what kind of meat is this and the husband would say it’s a premium meat. Imagine after this story came out and you were at this barbecue 🤮

I absolutely HATED History class in school. Mainly because how they taught it. I always knew they were watering shit down. It wasn't til the internet came about and you could search anything, yes, I'm older than the internet which means I'm older than dirt, I started to go back on some of those boring history lessons and holy crap were my eyes opened. I mean, I always had a feeling that they took stuff out, but damn, they REALLY took stuff out. Now, I can't get enough of it because I can get all the facts without any of it being taken out.

Beethoven could still write music because he knew how the note should sound. Also with his health he lived a messy life. He house was also full of trash. He even left his used chamber pot under out.

Three presidents died on July 4th. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died the same day, July 4, 1826. James Monroe died five years later, July 4, 1831.

On a bit of morbid note an addendum to number 20 the recently deceased were dressed and posed (often with family members but not always) for their final photograph and due to the time between the passing and the taking of the photo having a smile was not practical so having a “neutral” facial expression when being photographed became the norm.

Calling NK 'relatively isolated' is a huge understatement. As for brain surgery, it feels like a nuke went off in your head afterward. I couldn't sleep for a good two weeks, even while taking the most powerful painkillers.

Actually, July 4 was not the date the Declaration of Independence was signed, but rather the date it was voted to be sent for ratification by the individual colonies. Actual signatures were affixed over a period of 2-6 August, after copies had been carried back to the individual colonial legislatures for approval.

Your problem with history is: you are taught only about U.S. good history. Like who liberated Holland? Ask the Dutch. More events U.S. takes credit for much that they don't deserve

I question the validity of the death of Crassus. How would the Parthian empire know of his wealth? His execution was probably due to some molten liquid being poured down his throat but was it gold? Sounds like a tall tale about greed when Crassus was actually looking for military conquest in order to gain respect as a leader, like Caesar had done in Gaul. Gold was a rare commodity in those days. History would have us to believe it was just lying on the ground everywhere.

People didn't originally smile for pictures because it took too long for the exposure to happen. Holding a smile would lead to a smeared photo. So, they kept a serious face. Then, eventually that gave way as exposures took less time.
