Another reason for not smiling in photographs in the Victorian era was that often families would memorialize dead family members by taking their picture. With or without the family. And the dead were made up to look as if they were alive, even to drawing eyes on their eyelids. Several of the photos used here actually have dead people in them. Try to figure out which people are dead.
That is a myth. It is very obvious when a dead person is photographed even back then. These people are laying down and look dead. People who have their eyes open even if they look to be in a stand are very much alive.
Thank you for being my "bedtime story" almost every night 🙏 You upload your videos at the same time I get to bed, looking for something to listen to before falling asleep 🫡
The main reason for no smiling in old photos and most paintings even today are due to the exposure length/time it takes to hold still for a photo to be taken. People can't stand there an smile for that long.

Hi Mike, interesting that they chose Für Elise, rather than Beethoven's 5th symphony as an example of his music. Für Elise is a pretty little song, and often one of the first songs a piano student learns, while the first few bars of Beethoven's 5th are among his most iconic.
The reason why he became great besides having no legs was the fact that if he had legs he wouldn't be able to fly while experiencing g-forces. Without having legs that was not an issue.

There might have only be one US president who was born on July 4th, but there were three US presidents who were born within one gestational period (37-42 weeks) of July 4th; so we have a good idea what the parents of John Tyler, James Buchanan, and Grover Cleveland were doing on July 4th the year before their births.

Painting or photography showing BAD teeth was not good.. (missing teeth?) Old saying: You have to know history to not repeat it. Music, I remember a 'composer' who drew staffs on a piece of paper and marked the imperfections (spots) on the paper as notes.
I think the reason people didn't smile in early photography and paintings is because it's hard to hold a smile for a painting and for early photos because of the time the lens was open causing blurred photos if you moved

On a bit of morbid note an addendum to number 20 the recently deceased were dressed and posed (often with family members but not always) for their final photograph and due to the time between the passing and the taking of the photo having a smile was not practical so having a “neutral” facial expression when being photographed became the norm.

I question the validity of the death of Crassus. How would the Parthian empire know of his wealth? His execution was probably due to some molten liquid being poured down his throat but was it gold? Sounds like a tall tale about greed when Crassus was actually looking for military conquest in order to gain respect as a leader, like Caesar had done in Gaul. Gold was a rare commodity in those days. History would have us to believe it was just lying on the ground everywhere.
People didn't originally smile for pictures because it took too long for the exposure to happen. Holding a smile would lead to a smeared photo. So, they kept a serious face. Then, eventually that gave way as exposures took less time.
Man list 25 research team really dropped the ball they had a chance to introduce the world to Beethoven with a plethora of different music and they pick the one piece Für Elise that has been recycled over and over and over again from default ringers incordless phones to default ringers in cell phones to battery chargers yall really worked hard on that one
