I recently heard of one that deserves an honorable mention: In the early to mid 80s during the crack epidemic, it seems that the Broward sheriffs office devised a way to extort drug dealers as well as drug uses by creating a drug lab at their main base and attempted to cook up crack cocaine to supply to their undercover detectives to distribute to dealers and crackheads in local areas in order to make arrests and show the government their high rate of drug bust. Obviously, this was quite a stupid idea, and every one of those arrests were otherwise ruled unconstitutional.

honey is technically "spoiled" when yeast happens to get in there and turns it into mead. it can also growth some molds and bacteria when the container is exposed to heating and cooling. the water evaporates in the container, then condenses on the lid. it drips onto the surface and dilutes the honey enough to not be naturally protected if the container isn't sealed well or it wasn't pasteurized.
Most people think that Yersinia pestis is only in places like tropical Asia. There are 2 plague reservoirs (of which I am aware) in the United States: 1 in central/eastern Colorado, a low populated area, but 2) is in Los Angeles. Working Animal control, every 7 years we had to capture and test squirrels for infected fleas because a positive case would show up. Thank goodness we can easily treat it. Sleep well…
When I lived inNorthern California in the mountains near Truckee, it was quite common for chipmunks and squirrels to be carrying the plague. We'd get alerts on the news every few years about it, there would be bright yellow posters posted all over campgrounds, parks woodsy areas, picnic spots, warning people to not come in contact with the squirrels /chipmunks and to not let our pets roam off leash, or even get out of the car if they hadn't received systemic flea and tick treatments. Makes me wonder how many other areas have this happen that we haven't heard about.
Again with the myith of dollars not being made of paper: Paper made of textile fibers is still paper. The first versions of paper were made of recycled textiles. This was extremely durable. Only when we started making paper of wood pulp it became the material susceptible to rot from within, turning first yellow, then brown and brittle by decay of lignin.

My mother had 5 kids( it was the 50s. Don't judge) but I grew up with hearing how she had been bedridden for a month with both of my oldest siblings or she would have lost them. So probably some early fears. Also, I chose to have a spinal so the baby wouldn't get ANY anesthesia (and meant I was awake through the whole thing) and I needed a c section in any case. I waited until labor started before going in. The scar is all but invisible. So judge me if you must, but if men knew that having a child could rip THEM open from urethra to anus, I bet they wouldn't be so quick to ban abortions. Ya think?

Rather than a one or two inch cut in skin where the tiny scar would never show.
Plus there's the risk of anesthesia with a cesarean that doesn't occur with an episiotomy.
Interesting.
Ya think?

9:35 -- Nintendo, the video game giant, started as a publisher of playing cards in 1889 after the government lifted a ban on playing cards (fallout from a general ban on anything Western in origin), including the _hanafuda_ cards that were created in an attempt to sidestep the ban (which were themselves banned). Nintendo remained almost exclusively a publisher of playing cards until the latter half of the 20th century, eventually releasing its first console in 1977.
