Trace, emulsion, false trace, acceleration in cold process soap. Cold process soap making tutorial.

- This cold process soap making tutorial explains many of the aspects of trace. Including clearly showing how to spot emulsion (emulsification), what false trace is, how it happens and what to do about it, the different levels of trace and when they should be used and the main causes of acceleration in cold process soap.
I have tried to include as much information as I can without turning the video into some sort of epic 3-hour affair, but there will be a few things that I may not have included, for instance, I have given examples of what to use each type of trace for, not an exhaustive list of every soaping technique and the trace that works the best for them all.
I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making. I hope you enjoy the video. I'd love it if you would give me a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and ring the notification bell this helps me to grow my channel. If you have any comments or question please leave them in the comment section below and I will get back to you.

Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

Hi Everyone. I hope everyone is safe and well. I hope you found this video useful, especially if you struggle with getting your soap batter to the correct consistency and keeping it fluid. I obviously haven't had time to cover absolutely everything in this one video, so if you have any questions feel free to ask them below and if I can help I will do. Happy soaping
I enjoyed it very much and learn again, thank you very much and hope you and the cats are alright
@@astridfilon4295 Thank you so much Astrid, I'm so pleased it was helpful. Yes the cats are very well, they're been chasing bugs madly in the garden this morning, now they are flat out asleep in the study near me whilst I'm working. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well
Great video, thanks. My question is, does the mixer pull you down when you turn it on, because I get the impression it isn't? Mine has 300w and only one speed, but I can never cycle with it because it pulls me to the bottom as a vacuum. That's why I often reach the middle track too fast. 😒
I found this tutorial extremely helpful - thank you for sharing your expertise! I have had a lot of trouble getting consistent results. But today, after watching you’re video, my batter stayed fluid for well over an hour 😀. Do you have any tips for maintaining temperature for that long to avoid false trace? My batter seems to congeal below about 95 deg F (35 deg C). Thanks!
A while back I had been looking for a tutorial like this, and gave up. And then you came along , I subscribe and viola ! You make this video. Well done mi lady well done
This has to be the best tutorial video I've seen on emulsion/trace
Aw thank you so much, that's so kind of you to say :-)
I totally concur!
I totally agree
Me too. 👍
Me three!! 😃
This is the best tutorial on several subjects. I was able to get my questions answered by your perfect descriptions and demonstrations. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your very kind comment. I'm so pleased you found it useful, that makes me very happy :-)
@@IDreamInSoap ma'am, you are a dyed in the wool *teacher* from your bone marrow out!
I watched the video from the beginning to the end with all my concentration! Thank you Lisa you are the best teacher for the soap making beginners :)
Thank you so much marcel jeon, I'm so pleased you found the video helpful, it makes it worthwhile making videos when people benefit from them. Thank you for leaving me a lovely comment :-)
I love that you tell the difference between emulsion and trace. Well done!
Hey, thank you so much Bee, ooh yes I really believe being able to spot emulsion is a massive help in soaping, stopping blending at that stage and just stirring or waiting makes so much difference to how long your batter stays fluid. :-)
Thank you so much, Lisa! This video is brilliant! I am a beginner and I have watched quite a few videos about emulsion and trace, but no one made me see the difference as well as you did. I love how systematic you are in explaining things and that you put a lot of effort into illustrating rather than just explaining what you can do with different stages of trace. Incredibly helpful!
Thanks so much Red Rooster. I think it's important to show what your trying to explain, so I'm really pleased you see the benefit :-)
Thanks a million for this. As a newbie I've missed emulsion by a mile lots of times and with practice have gotten more control over trace and my batters. There is always something to learn when soaping though and this video will be invaluable to those interested in starting soaping or even slightly more experienced soapers :)
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I do hope the video helps some people out. I really think the point where I completely understood emulsion and how to spot it made a massive difference to my soaping. Thank you :-)
This was absolutely the best video on trace I've ever seen. I'd have saved myself so many headaches if I'd have had it a year ago. But now that I know better, I can do better. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to give us this phenomenal resource.
Thank you so much Amie, I'm so pleased you found it useful, it makes spending the time to produce these videos worthwhile. Stay safe and well :-)
Hi Lisa! I enjoyed the video. Thank you for being so methodical with your info. I have been soaping 7 years and though I know these things instinctively by experience it was nice to hear and see the presentation. Your video will save some “oops” soap as it is information that comes from
much experience and understanding about soap❤️👍😃
Thank you so much Jo-Ann, ooh if I can just get a few people to be confident enough to not need that extra blast of the stick blender, that would be fab. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well :-)
OMG! I’m so grateful for this video. Thank you so much for being so lovely and kind to take the time to do all this examples and share with us a little bit of your knowledge. I have seen so many videos but no one explains it as brilliantly as you do. Thank you again!! 🥰
Thank you so much Deborah, I'm so pleased you found the video helpful, that's so great :-)
This is the best video on trace that I’ve seen. Excellent!
Thank you so much Karolyn, that's so kind of you to say, it makes it so worthwhile when people find my videos helpful :-)
Lisa, thank you so much, this video is brilliant! You are an amazing soaper! Your videos are delightfully entertaining, extremely informative and educational. I know I will be watching this more than once!
Thank you so much Karyn, that is so kind of you to say :-)
Of all the channels I have subscribed to on soapmaking, this is by far the best. Your information is straightforward, thorough and yet simple enough for me - a beginner soaper- to understand.
Thank you so much Elle, I'm so pleased you enjoy my videos :-)
I never get tired of watching this one. I am making soap tonight and need a thin trace. I have to remind myself every batch not to overmix.
Hi Winterseve86 thank you so much for your very kind comment 😊
I always give this video to people in facebook groups when they have questions about trace and their soap accelerating too quickly. I'm back again to grab the link for yet another person who needs your help! Thank you so much for this video. It helped me a lot when I was starting out and wasn't sure why my soap was accelerating so quickly (I was overblending!!!) and I've been passing it on to help others as well. :)
AW, thank you so much. I'm so pleased people find it useful and thank you for sharing it :-)
This is one of the best soaping videos I've watched! Thanks for all of the great information!
Thank you Lisa for such a great video! I am a new soapmaker and your videos are not only so informative but inspiring for trying all the techniques! I really appreciate how clear and concise you are.
Thank you so much. I'm so pleased you found it useful :-)
I know this video is a bit older but I am just now coming across it. This has been a tremendous help to me! Thank you for taking the time to put this together so fluidly.....bless you
Thank you so much @kimberlyolson4705, I'm so pleased you found the video helpful, it makes it worthwhile making videos when people benefit from them. :-)
Thank you so much for this lesson! I’ve watched it several times but this time everything clicked!
That's great news. Thanks so much Kailey
Lisa, this video is so good! I enjoyed watching the whole thing 😊 You've got fantastic helpful examples and great explanations. Your voice is very easy to listen to ❤️ Very well done on this amazing video!
Hey Shonna, thank you so much, you are always so kind to me. I'm so pleased you liked it. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well :-)
That was a very beautiful explanation of trace. Especially liked the way you showed the separation and emulsion pictures side by side. You explain very well and could do great as a teacher.
Thank you so much 😀
By far, the BEST tutorial - thank you!!
Aw, thank you so much 💓
Very informative. I am getting ready to make my first batch and I’ve been watching videos to make sure I’m not missing anything. This has to be the best video on what to look for. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful. Thank you so much for your lovely comment
Thank you for making this video, I am now have a better understanding of how traces are looks like in different stages. I am glad UA-cam recommended you channel to me.
I saw many videos on soap making for beginners, but this is the best one! I finally understood how to check the emulsion, the moment of trace... I made soap 5 times only, but 4 times from 5, I mixed from thin to medium in vain, to have at the end of pouring a thick paste. Thank you, Lisa!
Woohoo, that is excellent news, I'm so pleased it helped. I remember when I started out I actually spent a lot of time trying to spot emulsion and truly understand it. I really feel that is one of the biggest skills a soap maker can have because it then gives you so much more control over your soap.
@@IDreamInSoap I finally found time to make a bar of soap, applying what I learnt from you and I really felt a "queen of trace". I controlled everything from the beginning to the end and I could even play with two colors and use a big rectangular mold (until now I used only small molds and I was always in a big hurry not loosing the thin paste to be able to pour it). Many many thanks again!! I'm dreaming in the next bars.
I am learning soooooo much from you. When I started soaps in 2014, I just jumped in! But now that I have taken a break and spending time in research and actually taking notes, I can see that when I start again, I will be much better at it thanks to you! 😁😁😁😁🤓🤓
That's brilliant news Thea. Research is so important, I bet you'll be thrilled when that work pays off, as it will :-)
I have watched 100'S of soap making videos, your tutorials by far are the most comprehensive and informative of all I have watched.
Your attention to details are second to none the small details are the things everyone misses except you, thank you for doing this for the sake of teaching, you are so passionate about what you do that fits perfectly the name I dream soap, keep going ,it will not be long that you will be the one and the only, thanks again
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. I do really appreciate it and yes you are quite right soap making and teaching and two of my biggest passions (I also love cats and racing motorbikes :-) ) I'm so pleased you like my videos, I do try so hard to think about all the questions people could have and how I could possibly show them, and hopefully the answers too in the best way, so it's so lovely that people like you appreciate what I do :-)
@@IDreamInSoap Thank you Lisa for your kind reply,I meant every words and you deserve every compliment.
I have a question,I am making cp soap with olive, coconut palm and castor oil,my colors are turmeric and indigo and english clay(all dispersed in olive oil),I was making very small batch to practice for my large one and noticed as soon as I added my lemon grass essential it accelerated the trace to the point I could not pour my colored batter and became a mess,I love lemon grass and would like to use it,any advice?can I add my essential to my oils before I add the lye?would that help,I would really appreciate your advice
@@bahramassary2340 Hmmm. lemongrass essential oil is not known to speed up trace. I presume it's from a decent supplier? Any type of dry ingredient will though, so the clay and even the turmeric and indigo if they are all in powder form. You may find it helps to disperse those earlier, at least 24 hours and quite often dispersing them in distilled water helps to combat the absorbing effect they have. I do find indigo a complete pain to disperse in water though. For turmeric and paprika I actually do an infusion and then add the infused oils to my soap, that way you get a great colour, no acceleration and no speckles in your soap.
You can add the EO early but your problem there is that it's in longer, so if it is what's causing your acceleration it would actually be worse. Why not just try a tiny bit of your plain batter, no additives or colour with a few drops of EO on it's own and see what happens, at least that will show you if your EO is the problem and then you could maybe swap brand, as I know typically it's not an accelerator. Hope this helps Lisa xx
@@IDreamInSoap Thank you Lisa for your prompt and informative reply, since this experiment was just 10% of my receipe I may have made mistake calculating the 10%,it's good to know the lemongrass is not the culprit, have a great day
I've been soaping off and on for 20 years and I'm just getting back into it, I wish videos like this existed when I started! This is an absolutely excellent refresher for me. Thank you for sharing this!
You are so welcome! Glad you liked it. 😉
this is so helpful i am always over blending mine because i never could get a normal trace or knew what one looked like. today i made home made castile soap no fragrance and no mica :)
I'm so pleased you found it useful, hopefully no more over blending for you :-)
Thank you for this video. I started making soap recently, but it's been very hit and miss. I watch videos where the soap makers make their soap, divide it up and add colours and fragrances and still have time to do fancy things with it. My batches would 'seize' so quickly I'd struggle to get it into the mould. I was using a recipe with a 33% water discount, but added more water today, watched carefully for the emulsion stage, and poured it at a very light trace (I'm only doing simple soaps at the moment - layers and embeds will hopefully come at a later date!). It's already firming up nicely. Your tip on the temperature probably helped too. I was mixing at 90f as the recipe I was using told me to, but it was much better at 80f. I don't think I'll ever get to the stage of making soaps like yours - they are real works of art. I have to say thank you to Edens Secret soap - she mentioned you in a recent video which is how I got here. I really want to get good at this, it's becoming an obsession! The batch I made before this was my worst yet - it was splitting in the mould and crumbled as I cut it, despite it being the exact same recipe I've used before so it can't be lye-heavy. Can I rebatch it at a later date?
HI Cat Woman, I'm so pleased my video has helped you out. Yes stick blending and temperature are two of the biggest cuprits of having a batter that's too thick. Fragrance oils can also have a major effect. If you use soapcalc(or whatever lye calculator) check your ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats, you will find it on the top right hand side when you view a recipe in Soapcalc, if you can aim for something like 40:60 that will give you a nice recipe to work with., Mine is actually 41:59,higher saturated fats (simplistically hard oils) will speed upi your trace.
Providing you worked everything out correctly in your crumbly batch you can rebatch it, just check that it's not lye heavy though as crumbly is often a sign of that.
Hope this helps
best wishes
Lisa
I am very new to cold process and my first attempt has both been disaster but after watching this very I am feelin soooooo much better this has been the best tutorial I have seen thx you sooo much
This is the best video I have come across is a long time. It so helped me to slow down and notice what that batter is doing before I jump the gun and pour. Thank you so much!
Glad to help.
Best wishes.
I had a pretty thick trace for a soap that needed a more thin trace for the mold, I ended up with too many air pockets. It was clear I needed more technique to spot emulsion and how to treat the batter afterwards and I found this type of knowledge in this video, so thank you a bunch!
Thank you so much Maiköl , I'm so pleased you found the video helpful, it makes it worthwhile making videos when people benefit from them. :-)
This is an excellent tutorial with outstanding visual and verbal explanations of the various stages of trace, etc. I shared it with my niece, who has just started out with soap making.
AW, thank you so much Deborah, that's so kind of you. I'm so pleased you and your niece found it helpful. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well :-)
An excellent video! I now realise that what I thought was the beginning of a thin trace is actually sliding towards a medium trace. Glad I watched this. Thank you 👍
Glad it was helpful Lindsay - ooh you should be able to do a lot more designs now :-)
Hi Lisa. I just want to thank you again for your videos and tutorials. You really changed my life.. of soaping woman... lol . For me, the most important one was about the trace, I can not count how often I shared it for all those who struggled like me before. Then, of course the one about cleaning...microfiber.. what else..lol. And the small masterbatch.... good god, I do it all the time now....and the titanium dioxide.. no more crumbles...
With your help, no more stress, only fun, and self confiance. Thursday I made a polka dot soap, and yesterday, with the cut offs.. a rimmed soap... on the base of what you taught me. Wish I could show you pics of the results of your teaching.
Really, really.. let me hug you.. no corona online....
Thank you....sooooo much... Ulli from France
AW, such a lovely comment, thank you so much that's really kind of you and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and let me know, I am so pleased I have been able to hep :-)
Every new soaper should watch this video more than once. It has such clear information with visual input all becomes so clear and the second time watching after a few months experience even clearer. So thank you Lisa
Thanks very much for such a complete demonstation - you show the best examples and give the clearest descriptions I've seen! Alas, "just one more" second of blending is so, so hard to resist! 😁
Thank you so much, he,he yes that one little bit more, so many people do it, but get confident with emulsion and you'll never need it. Thank you for your comment :-)
Brilliant! And I love you! You explain things so well and more importantly take the time to teach! Thank you 🙏🏽

Lisa, thank you for this informative video! Been soaping for a few years and now I’m finding a need to review to have a sold understanding on trace. Millions of people comment on how wonderful and talented you are. So thoughtful and kind to share your knowledge. Just add my name to your list of a million thank you. O my soul. I wish I saw this vid before I started. I have made so many mistakes. I ended up grating my soap and making hot process instead.
This was brilliant. I need to love that stickblender a lot less.
Thank You😀

Um, best video ever on trace and all the things! I wish I had seen this before I made my first few batches but now that I have I feel so much more prepared to deal with issues that pop up! thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant tutorial! Wish I had come across this about 12 months ago! Great to have seen it now though as it just assists in what I have learnt now through trial and error. Thank you!
Thanks so much 💛
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've over blended so many times because I was so afraid of a false trace. Now that I understand how to check for emulsion I will be more confident👍🏻
Woohoo, that is excellent news. Just remember false trace will look all funny and split as soon as you look at your stick blender, emulsion may look all combined and smooth initially but will split after a while (can be up to a minute) if not yet emulsified. Good luck, I certainly know that once I was confident with emulsion it made a massive difference to my soaping. Stay safe and well :-)
This is such a good tutorial. I have watched this a few times. Thank you for sharing invaluable information.
You are SO good at teaching. Thank You... Thank You... Thank You
AW, thank you so much Michelle, I'm so pleased you found the video useful. Stay safe and well :-)
Thank you for a detailed but not complex video explaining trace, emulsion, false trace and acceleration. I first tried making soap a couple of years ago and hit false trace almost instantly - I panicked and ended up throwing out the lot, but this video has given me the confidence to try again. I look forward to learning more from your videos.
This is pure brilliance! I have been so frustrated in my soap making do to fast accelerations. Your video is the only video online that has a thorough and simple explanation on trace and acceleration. Thank you for this! New sub here:)
It's that balance between emulsion and trace that is so difficult. Explained so well here.Thank you Lisa 😁
Thank you Deborah, yes it can be tricky but so worth getting to grips with, it makes a big difference in controlling trace. Thank you for you comment :-)

Glad it was helpful! thanks you for your lovely comment
Incredible. You are a true teacher. Thank you
Thank you so much K Wheatley, that's very kind of you.
This actually explained a lot. Thanks Lisa.
Glad to help. 👍
@@IDreamInSoap thank you so much. Because of this video I was able to actually know when emulsion was and didn’t over mix and was able to actually split my batter and have time to work.
Great explanation. For those on the Celsius scale 82 degrees is 28c. I recently purchased an IR thermometer, i was surprised at how hot my lye and oils actually were. Even room temperature was hotter than 30c (87f). It gets hot and humid here in Australia.
Yes, you do get it hot down there
Thanks so much for this! I always end up at medium trace and I found the following as a couple of reasons why: I usually try small batches and then stick blend almost the same as when I'm doing say a 1lb batch. The power of the stick blender obviously affects the small batter. I figured this out when I did a small batch of pure olive oil and was expecting a long time to trace but it was done in under 2 mins. Lots and lots for me to learn still so this is really a useful tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video! I made my third batch of soap yesterday (first time working with three colours) and I got it to the perfect consistency.. and then I wasn't confident enough and transformed my first colour to a very thick batter by juuust givinig it another burst with the blender.. the other ones were just marvellous to work with.. next time, I'll be more confident!
As a new soaper I found this video to be an excellent resource. I have read or heard most of this information in bits and pieces over the past couple months, but you have put it all into an easy to understand and visualize format. Thank you, thank you!
That's so kind of you thank you so much, I'm so pleased you found the video helpful, it makes it worthwhile making videos when people benefit from them. Stay safe and well :-)
Hi Lisa, just wanted to say thank you for this video and explaining emulsion properly. I thought I’d feedback to you that I’m now taking much more notice of emulsion state. Today I mixed up a batch to test 9 fragrances and 10 colours...whole process meant my batter sat in my bucket for over an hour...didn’t split and didn’t thicken much at all...fantastic control and a very useful skill to have 💕
Perfect, that's brilliant. It makes such a huge difference if you can spot emulsion, suddenly so many more things are possible. Well done :-)
Thanks Lisa, I’d managed it a few times before...but it was by chance...it’s so much easier to control things when you understand your soap...your videos have helped me massively with this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining the science too 💕💕
Another great video. I’m learning lots. My thoughts are turning now to creating a spread sheet to pin on my soap studio board to quickly see how my fragrance and colours affect batter. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your knowledge.💕
Oooh now I love a spreadsheet. It certainly is worth noting how things behave and once you start you notice things a lot more and understand what's going on rather than being net with surprises. Stay safe and well :-)
Thank you very informative on cold process soapmaking. Hot process is very forgiving, fortunate for me
Thank you so much, yes HP can be a bit more forgiving with trace, but still requires a good bit of skill. Stay safe and well :-)
Hello Lisa, thanks so much for sharing your expertise with all of us. Your your hints and tips are so so beneficial and helpful to me. The soap design is so pretty, I just love it & I'm so excited about trying to create it!!!
Hi Debra, thank you so much, so pleased you find what I do useful, I really love it when people get some benefit out of my videos
Excellent. One of my best selling soaps accelerates terribly (seizing if I’m too warm or use certain colorants, etc)... I hate it. But every loves it so much I have to keep making it, lol. I’m happier selling soaps than not- so it’s a good problem to have. Lol. As long as they’re pleased with simpler patterns, then it’s fine, lol.
Thank you so much. I know why is it that some of the best soaps are the naughtiest, but as you say, if you are prepared then you can deal with it and still come up with something great. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well :-)

Best tutorial about trace! I love it!
Thank you so much Dana, that's so lovely of you to say :-)
You’re welcome! I just want to let you know that your tutorial is very helpful! I always go either false trace or thick trace right away and it’s always so difficult for me to put in my mold because it becomes soft and crumbly and today I finally did my swirls! Thank you so much Lisa☺️🙏🏻
One of the best tutorial so very helpful for a beginner like me...thank you❤
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much 💓
Soo useful! Thank you!! I seem to be getting an emulsion literally a few seconds of mixing with the SB. Another couple of seconds and I hot heavy trace. I'll try switching to manual at emulsion!! Far more practice needed! 😅🖤
Ooh I hope you work it out. A few seconds can actually be quite a bit of blending, it's worth working on it as once you've done it you will be able to do so many things with your soap
You are wonderful and patient teacher. Thank you so much for making these videos
That's so kind of you to say Vixen Ligon, thank you so much 😊

Hi Lisa. I wanted to take a minute to thank you for making and sharing this video. It has helped me finally tackle my first swirl with confidence! Your explanation of recognizing emulsion on through the different stages of trace is exceptional. I was very nervous and apprehensive about doing my first swirl soap (mostly because I didn’t want to completely ruin it), but I was actually quite comfortable going through the process thanks to your teaching. :)
I'm so pleased, that's fantastic, well done :-)
This video is brilliant. I get it now. And I am going to practice and test fragrance and colorant as suggested. One "aha!" moment after another in this video.
