I made my first soap 2 month ago. I used the first soapbar days ago. I am so happy! I made it with olive - a. coconutoil. I added teatree oil and a bit of arganoil. A bit spirulina for the color. I do not need to change the oils, they make my skin so smooooth! This base is perfect and I will make more!
Very helpful, actually. Made me think a lot about how I make my soap & that I DONT have to use all the fancy oils and whatnot. It reminded me that there is beauty in simplicity as well.

Thank you for these tips. I've been hobby soap making for about seven months. Just like you said, I've lost and made some expensive batches. Just because I didn't know the difference. Now I've hit the reset button and started making lard/olive oil soaps. I'm seeing much better results.
Thank you. I have been telling my guests this for years. However, because some other soap maker has told them that they absolutely need a soap made with 15 different fats; I get folks that just completely look down on what I do. I chalk it up to ignorance (not meaning that in a bad sense) and try to educate as much as they will allow me to. Anyway, I'm happy to see a common sense approach, as I was starting to think that I was the only one saying these things.
I like tallow soap for hairwashing and castile for skin. The castile soap I was using left too much residue in my hair which even a strong vinegar rinse wouldn't shift, but it's nice and gentle on my sensitive skin. The tallow soap cleans my hair very well and seems to rinse out much better, after a vinegar rinse it's perfect and leaves my hair just as if I'd used fancy shampoo and conditioner!
You are right about soapers choice. I have made soap for 20 years and checked prices everywhere. You can' beat soaperschoice. Not only that, they are helpful on the phone if you need info. Great people
Thank you! I've only been making soap for a few months but my first batch was soy oil. I wanted to see if I'd like it and try out the procedure. When I handed out my first three batches to my friends for feedback, they all liked the soy better! I've played with additions. I'm just having fun. My son took several batches to a local market and sold out! It paid for my new hobby and bought groceries that week!

I found after years of trying and buying hand made soaps that goat milk soap works best for me. I suffer from very dry skin and since I moved to the desert it has gotten worst and the itchiness will only go away with the goat milk soap. but thank you so much for all this info and the links...I just make soap for myself and you are correct on all levels...appreciate you making this video, thanks
I love this video. It took me a long time to get a straight answer in regard to what I can use to replace coconut oil in homemade soap, because I can't use coconut products. For the record, the answers are as follows: Babassu or PKO for vege-based or tallow or lard for animal-based.

I'm starting to make soap more and more now and found that it is very addicting. I really enjoy it!! My family expects me to make it now. We never want to go back to genetic soaps! Great 😊 and as per my experience Shea butter soap is pretty good 👍🏻 I see the difference easily… it’s better than two oil soaps…I make soap and sell it… I see the difference clearly that oils that are cold pressed mixed with shea butter, make a richer , more conditioning soap with little superfatting …and they harder too

Can u give me tips, i have questions for what to use to make it smell like u want, fot example how do u make your soap smell like chocolate or something, but keeping everything natural
You are absolutely right! As a new soap maker i realize I'm spending too much money on soap which their result not always satisfaying. Basiclly i find the best oils for me are coconut oil, castor oil and rice oil
I am a noob, and this is so helpful! Just started making soap with my Dad because he had a surplus of beef tallow from another project, and I was not impressed with the scent of hot beef tallow, so he suggested a plant based oil option. Thank you for sharing this information!
Oh my goodness gracious I have found a new soaper to watch and LEARN FROM. Oh my goodness so glad I found your page Keep posting these straight to the point , positive knowledgeable honest videos. I am a soaper/body care product maker 😂and I have been making these items fit years for my family it transitioned to business last year. EVERYTIME I watch one of your videos I learn so much and you say a lot of what I try to explain to people who may not know what cold Processed soaps are. Especially why some of my soaps are more expensive than others oh boy this business is a great one and there’s room for us all but it is difficult at times to get people to understand your price and in beginning I would try to change my price to fit what people needs are but that HURT MY BUSINESS because like u said some soaps have expensive butters that I also use in other products I make. Whew I know this is a lot but you are motivating e to make videos once I get past my fear of recording myself maybe I can too one day show what I make and just explain on a platform like UA-cam for my customers. Thank you sir you are awesome in my opinion 🤎
Thank you. I’m a home soap maker in England. I’ve made 4 batches so far. I’ve used either olive oil and coconut oil or lard and coconut oil. It’s such fun. So far all has worked, well one seized but I quickly packed it into my mould and it had a few air spaces but it’s fine.
You win for most informative! You are the best!!! No one else mentioned the soap calculator...What a HUGE difference in not wasting time and money by trial and error. You have given me a big jumpstart! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!~JAG (I'm also going all organic, and sticking to organic 100% lavendar oil, I'm glad for the confirmation~Lavendar oil should be safe.)
Essential oils are great. Make sure they're not already adulterated with a base oil, or synthetic, and they'll also provide anti-viral assistance. Also, antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal. Lavender is a good all round choice for all of those qualities if required.
Very true! Any plant or animal based fat/oil will make soap. Just they all have their benefits and drawbacks made at 100%, so that's why people mix a few-- to get a well balanced bar. Then every person is different! What feels nourishing and smooth to one person, may feel dry or irritating to another. Find what works for you.
I make soap as a hobby. Right now I just use olive oil and cocnut oil. Sometimes, I add castor oil. And my batches are always goo. I keep it simple and it works wonders. I live in Brazil and exotic oils are expensive. So I use what I get and it's just fine. You always have great tips.
Oi, meu nome é Edilson Cardoso, eu moro em Cuiabá MT Brasil, vc poderia por favor me ajudar? Eu sou apaixonado pelo método cold process! Eu realmente preciso de ajuda para fazer meu primeiro trabalho.
Thank you!! I'm very new to soap making and have been trying to find resources to explain the terms and different types of oils, etc. Thank you, this eases the anxieties a bit!
I am still in the planning stage for my soap business. Thank you very much for keeping things simple in your videos. Please get into the trending oils, if you can.
At 3:46 you hit the nail on the head. Honestly, I think most of using all those shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, etc. is for fun in the making of it, and fancy marketing. So far, I’ve only made Castile soap, and lard soap. Both are great.
P.S. Most customers truly couldn’t tell the difference between a coconut oil soap bar and a lard soap bar. And we all know that the ingredients list on a label just tell us WHAT is in it, not how much of each thing is in it. So an ingredient label that says: “Natural Spring Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Non-GMO Olive Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Mango Butter, Jojoba oil, and Lavender Essential Oil” … may SEEM a lot more luxurious to a customer than one that says: “Water, Lard, Lye, and Lavender” … but they are truly hardly any different at all.
Jon, that is why I don't sell soaps any more after 20 yrs there was just not enough money to be made. That is why now I just make it for myself and friends people believe the hype.
I watched my grandmother make soap and her soap was wonderful. She made basic soap, seemed like it took no more than 30 minutes for a batch, and it smelled wonderfully fresh..
Thankyou for that !!! I haven’t even started making soap and I’m thinking we are NOT Eating this lol why all the foods in it and expensive oils I can’t afford , Mabey later after I’ve made a few batches but I don’t see the point of smelly essential oils and things like flowers , oats and seeds going down the shower drain , blocking the pipes , olive oil and cocoanut oil are exactly what I’m starting with , thankyou very much for good advice 😊😊😊
"There is a difference between using something on your skin and eating it." Good to know. I'll stop grabbing shaving cream whenever I'm out of cool whip.
I thought of making soap to potentially save some money buying cleaning products (hair, body, dog, laundry, etc), but also because I'd like to make something for myself that's actually natural and I can customize and eco-friendly and all that good stuff. Everytime I see people adding 50 oils I'm mad because I don't want to Buy so many oils only for one thing. Olive and coconut oil can at least be used for many things for their price. Plus with the measuring that needs to be done, just keeping it simple is less stressful.
I just found your videos and I love them! They are so informative and teaching me everything I need to know so I can start making soap!! Thank you for putting these out there! I like the fact that you are teaching about the details instead of just making a soap recipe!!!
Thank you yes I do know you give very good advice good old lard Tallow Castor is what I remember using a dash of lavender essential oil best I’ve ever used
Thank you for your no nonsense, right to the point information. We hate the videos with all the balowny la de da, we sometimes get. We don’t care about your bingo thing or dog or anything else. We are here for INFORMATION! That’s what you give us!
I use filtered ( paper towel in a funnel) used cooking oil. It was a mix of Canola, peanut and olive oil. It is a fantastic cleaning soap and much better than plastic bottle detergent for dishwashing. 450ml oil 108ml water 58 gr NaOH
I like your explaining these oils and butters. I don't like cocoa butter, Shea, or mango in my soaps, I just use those in my body butters I make. Now I do like the oils in my soaps except for the coconut it dries my skin out. Thanks for the video.
I have always Limited my use of coconut oil For the same reason you have. But I have thrown the book out about to much coconut oil drying your skin out. Lately I’ve been testing a batch that has 42.5% coconut oil 42.5% grapeseed oil in 15% cocoa butter. The in result was a bar soap that cleanses well it lathers up great and it doesn’t dry out my skin the reason it doesn’t dry out my skin is the 15% cocoa butter. that 15% was added after a test batch did dried my skin out. In my opinion in my research cocoa butter does not clog your pores up and it seals your skin and keep your natural moisture in.my advice is to revisit using cocoa butter in your soap.
I’m researching at the moment, I want to start soap making off as a hobby but I would like to eventually make a business out if it once I am 100% sure I know what I’m doing, and I don’t want to cheat my customers, I want to give them quality and value for their money. But my biggest concern is not balancing the profit with the cost of making the soap. This is really good advice and I do think soap makers are putting loads of oils in their soap which they actually don’t need to.
To your oil phase add about 3% clay powder (less for red & green) & 1.2% sodium lactate b4 emulsion, to your water phase (25%) add up to 3% sugar, 2% citric acid 1.2% salt (dissolved b4 NaOH added) do your color splits if you have them, add essential oils blend (3-4%) WITH .7% vitamin E (70% kind) & you will have a good bar with good properties olive coconut 70/30 is a good start then get exotic incrementally. Fesl the difference 5% castor oil in a recipe makes then the fancy fats like shea & cocoa butter. Write everything down then rewrite it after a successful batch. Check George on Dawn soaps (total pro) & Elly's every day for beautifully balanced recipes. Worry about swirls & line pours & such later. Ive got a fat notebook on all of the tutorials given by above mentioned & all from this channel. This stuff is kind of an addictive hobby.
I LOVE making soap for my self and i really enjoy it a, I used to make it only with olive oil but when I checked youtube I saw so many recepieces , I was so confused, am i making it wrong because I only use one oil....till you came and you explaid everything.thank you so much
Thank you so much. I was starting to get confused with all the info out there about all the variety of oils to use. The first two batches i did were very simple, and it turned out beautiful. My third one, on the other hand, I tried a recipe with different oils, and it was a disaster 😅😅😅 thank you! I loved this video ❤
This was so helpful. I want to make soap but so I read some recipes and it looks difficult and expensive to buy all those difference oils. Now I know it's not all necessary
Omg so glad I watched this video, been driving me nuts trying to figure out which oils are the best ones to use. Made my very first batch today just olive oil and coconut oil. It’s setting up nicely and can’t wait to check it out tomorrow. All I want is a nice bar of soap with bubbles. Thanks John 👍🏻
I agree with keeping it simple. That said, I do have a butter and 4 oils in my recipe..lol... I also agree with the niche...mine is made with lard and fresh goats milk...although I probably slightly under charge for it really, but have to keep it where people will still buy it..seems location and local economy have an effect on pricing too. I make up for it with other products I sell though...I also agree with the other poster...would love to see a video on figuring price. Thanks for the video Jon!
@Uncle John Sir, the moment I saw your face in the thumbnail I knew I was about to get a super straightforward explanation and I was absolutely right. Thank you very much!!!
Ive been making cold process soap for 7 months now and I make some nice soap. I always follow other people's recipes. Hopefully I will feel comfortable enough to create my own recipe one day. I am so bad with math so it's going to take me awhile. I love Olive, Coconut, Palm,Castor, cocoa butter and Jojoba.....
Hey.. as long as the recipes you find are good and you're happy.. it's all good! If you enjoy the process and have fun plus get a useful product, then you're in a very good place 😁
Every single thing you said is 💯 accurate, I being wanting to make my own 🧼 for this longest time ever BUT every damn video alwayssss says a different story until YOU made my soap wishing dream come back 😃 thankful for all the information
Not only is the knowledge you’re laying down a timeless resource; you’ve also included some righteous axe shredding intro/outro. To a 44 year old like me who never grew up and is now wanting to try something new; this basically qualifies as a philosophy. I hereby award Uncle Jon the status of “Yoda”. You Sir; have a new student....
Some of the wisest words I have heard yet about oils. Personally, I have never had a problem or complaint with 90/10 soy/coconut. Much of the rest is hype unless you superfat in the final stages with some oil that has specific properties on the skin.
+Russell Barton even then, unless you're doing hot process or milling a neutral soap after saponification, super fat can't be targeted. Even with hot process, it's a guess as to which oil and how much of it is actually being reserved. And you can't even begin to guess in cold process.. Lol.
I agree, once the chemical process starts... oil is oil, a lye doesn't discriminate as to which one it is going to saponify and which it is going to leave alone for super fats.
Everything's going well in my life, but this morning, I woke up feeling heavy hearted for unknown reason. Like something's missing. A few hours later, I found myself stumbling upon handmade soaps on UA-cam. I feel excited and want to make soaps for a hobby 😍
Thanks so much for valuable info. I am working on doing a soaping business after I make a long distance relocation. Got to do a little more investment on needed tools. Mainly a wire cutter and build a few more molds.
Thank you. Very clear and concise information. I am interested in making specific bar soaps for my own use so I could use some pointers. Can you give me some simple do's and don't's RE: (1) making a new bar of soap from bits of used soap ( additives & sanitizing as well), (2) reshaping a store bought bar, (3) Do all commercial soap bars contain lye? (4) What is the general shelf life for soap bars?
Thank you Jon! This was the Best video cuz I’m a starter and have fallen in love with this art. So helpful! You hit every point I wondered about. The links will help me greatly! 👍😘

I dropped all other oils but olive and coconut. Loved my soaps so much more now.
I am a noob, and this is so helpful! Just started making soap with my Dad because he had a surplus of beef tallow from another project, and I was not impressed with the scent of hot beef tallow, so he suggested a plant based oil option. Thank you for sharing this information!
personally, I prefer vegetable fat, but I have used both. I am fairly new to making soap. thank you for the education
This was so helpful. You get right to the point and don't toss out a bunch of bullshit. Thank you!
Tammy Miller Thank you so much. Just what I needed to clear the confusion. Great video.
Thank you. I’m a home soap maker in England. I’ve made 4 batches so far. I’ve used either olive oil and coconut oil or lard and coconut oil. It’s such fun. So far all has worked, well one seized but I quickly packed it into my mould and it had a few air spaces but it’s fine.
lucy7b which olive oil do you use hun?
Your soap batches are goo? Like a soft hand soap that you'd put in a pump dispenser?
I think that was supposed to be "good"
Ah, yes. But "goo" worked too!
Thank you!! I'm very new to soap making and have been trying to find resources to explain the terms and different types of oils, etc. Thank you, this eases the anxieties a bit!
I am still in the planning stage for my soap business. Thank you very much for keeping things simple in your videos. Please get into the trending oils, if you can.
You are so right, it’s nice to hear someone who is so down to earth, wish there were more like you!
Thanks!
Wow, I’m trying to start to make soap just for my family. This was very useful, thanks for the information 👍🏾😊
So an ingredient label that says:
“Natural Spring Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Non-GMO Olive Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Mango Butter, Jojoba oil, and Lavender Essential Oil”
… may SEEM a lot more luxurious to a customer than one that says:
“Water, Lard, Lye, and Lavender”
… but they are truly hardly any different at all.
Jon, that is why I don't sell soaps any more after 20 yrs there was just not enough money to be made. That is why now I just make it for myself and friends people believe the hype.
Louis Leoncini understood. It's tough. I've had to learn to sell myself as well as the soaps. Having niche products helps too.
Good to know that its perfectly fine if I mainly stick with olive and coconut! I'll keep the shea and cocoa butter for special or personal batches.
🤣 you got the jist
Thank you for making this. I'm a new soap maker transitioning from melt and pour to CP. I really needed this video
My favorite bar of soap has 30% Coconut Oil and 30% Shea Butter in it. Feels so nice on the skin!
It'll work as a great bath soap too 😁
@@unclejonssoap ( forgot to mention used cooking oil for frying fish LOL )
@@walterbulyga2588 that's ok! That works too
Thanks Jon I'll be making soap soon and I'll do coconut and olive oil, plus a little fragrance.
I like your explaining these oils and butters. I don't like cocoa butter, Shea, or mango in my soaps, I just use those in my body butters I make. Now I do like the oils in my soaps except for the coconut it dries my skin out. Thanks for the video.
I have always Limited my use of coconut oil
For the same reason you have.
@@keithburns5707
OK, I will do that. Thank you. I love it in butters so I can like it in soaps.
Yes! This is just a hobby for me. I'm hoping I love it its been awesome learning these things
I LOVE making soap for my self and i really enjoy it a, I used to make it only with olive oil but when I checked youtube I saw so many recepieces , I was so confused, am i making it wrong because I only use one oil....till you came and you explaid everything.thank you so much
It's never wrong as long as it's what you enjoy and works😁
Thank you Uncle Jon! You never disappoint! I was really concerned about the types of oils I'm using.
Yes ur channel is so straightforward, simple and honest . Thank you
Omg so glad I watched this video, been driving me nuts trying to figure out which oils are the best ones to use. Made my very first batch today just olive oil and coconut oil. It’s setting up nicely and can’t wait to check it out tomorrow. All I want is a nice bar of soap with bubbles. Thanks John 👍🏻
Congrats!
So..? How did it turn out?
Like the way you deliver your talk. Plain and simple and to the point, Good job my friend!!
Soap101 did a breakdown when she did a dollar general haul.. It made sense to calculate the price the way she did it.
@Uncle John Sir, the moment I saw your face in the thumbnail I knew I was about to get a super straightforward explanation and I was absolutely right. Thank you very much!!!
THANK YOU for sharing your precious time, talent, knowledge, & humor with us all so we can learn! GREAT info for us beginners. Hugs & Blessings 2U!
I like this Guy!!! I can really learn from him.
Thanks for being honest and breaking down the facts. You took a lot of mystery out of the process.
Thanks! I try to break through some of the drama that others may attribute to soap making 😁
Lol.. that's great! Thanks man 🤣
I'm a big fan of all things honey and really like the idea of using it in soap
That could be great! I find that making things relaxes me. And.. using my creative side always send to give me a lift 😁 Hopefully it will for you too.
Thank you! It seemed so expensive and complicated before, I was afraid to start. Now I get it! Love your honesty!!
thankyou Jon for a great video, love your calmness and patience! Your practicality is priceless!
Thanks so much for valuable info. I am working on doing a soaping business after I make a long distance relocation. Got to do a little more investment on needed tools. Mainly a wire cutter and build a few more molds.
I love your honesty. When you said, "I don't know," I subscribed!
I subscribed because of this comment!
@@rosalialaboy2235 I subscribed because hey if you are who am I not to.
Nice
Great information, I like your simplicity and courage you give to beginners like me!
Hi Uncle John I am so new to soap making, I'm preparing for my first batch coming up very soon.
Nice! Have fun!
Thanks! Finally a video with information and not a “How I” video.
Thanks for the video! A real education for free! Keep 'em coming!
Jojoba is best used as a carrier oil for essential oils because it is the easiest for our skin to absorb.
I liked your practical advice and amusing delivery. Thanks. :)
Thank you for being so straight forward this really helped me and my anxiety level.
I just want to listen to you because of the beard.
😁
Oh come on🤣
I just picked up a gallon of babassu oil to substitute for palm oil. Not sure how well it will work but I'm excited to try it out.
Thanks. I like your straight forward approach and common sense.
Thanks!
Thank you sir. I have not made soap before. But you have helped my thinking in terms of oil and cost. I know I don't want an expensive hobby.
Thank you. Very clear and concise information. I am interested in making specific bar soaps for my own use so I could use some pointers.
Can you give me some simple do's and don't's RE:
(1) making a new bar of soap from bits of used soap ( additives & sanitizing as well),
(2) reshaping a store bought bar,
(3) Do all commercial soap bars contain lye?
(4) What is the general shelf life for soap bars?
Thank you for not talking to us like we are first graders. WOW what a great change!
I try..lol. I know I hate being talked to that way.
Thank you Jon! This was the Best video cuz I’m a starter and have fallen in love with this art. So helpful! You hit every point I wondered about. The links will help me greatly! 👍😘
Thanks for watching! 😁
I'm late..but this tutorial was awesome! I learned so much and you keep it REAL!!!
